Featured Article: Key Club in My Life
Key Club in My Life// Hayden Smith Cypress Ranch High School Mahatma Gandhi said that “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others”. This quote has always rung true in my life and is very significant to me. I think that the best way to solve our own problems is to help others solve theirs. However, high school is busy. Sometimes it is too hard to find the time to serve. Sometimes people are too shy to find ways to serve other people and need a little push. Sometimes people just can’t find good ways to serve in their lives. For me, this is where Key Club came in. Key Club allowed me to continue helping others throughout my high school career. I have participated in piano, choir, swimming, and difficult classes, but I always kept up with Key Club as well. It provided me with opportunities to help out in my community, gave me new and unique experiences, and kept me centered on what is truly important.

Finding places in one’s own community to serve can be difficult, but Key Club makes it easy. The officers and sponsors find tons of opportunities for members to volunteer, and all we have to do is sign up. I have been able to volunteer all over Cypress and even in downtown Houston throughout my Key Club experience, and I have never had to worry about finding/contacting those events because Key Club did it for me. Key Club is a great place to go if you want easy ways to volunteer, as well as a little push from some modest requirements. With all these new opportunities came many unique experiences. I have worked so many different positions at a variety of locations. I have had jobs working with horses, organizing hundreds of shoes, cheering for runners, working concession stands, selling small fruit trees, and many more. I have gained many interesting skills that come along with those positions and have learned a lot through Key Club over my four years. Finally, Key Club has always reminded me of what is truly important. At a school like Cypress Ranch, where everything from academics to music to sports are super competitive, it is easy to get wrapped up in that world. For me, it has mostly been grades. It is so easy to forget that your grade is just a number and that it is not life or death. Yes, school is very important, but connecting with people and helping others is important as well. Key Club has kept me calm and centered when school and other extracurriculars have gone crazy on me. It is refreshing to take a step back from life and serve. I always come back refreshed and ready to look at my issues with a different perspective. Like Gandhi said, helping others is the way to find ourselves. Key Club is a wonderful organization that has done a great job of connecting me to my community, providing me with new experiences, and keeping myself centered.

Note from T-O’s International Trustee Thank you Key Clubbers for being the absolute best Districts I could ask for. Your District Governors— Ciara of New Jersey, Raphaella of New England & Bermuda and Sabrina of Texas-Oklahoma— speak very highly of you and the work you accomplish. I am incredibly excited to be able to work with such driven leaders. Similarly, I am excited to visit their District Boards and Administration. In October, I will be visiting with the New Jersey District during their Fall Rally and the New England & Bermuda District during their Fall Board Meeting. I am thrilled! Key Clubbers, I challenge you to make this Key Club Year one to remember. Continue to stay active in school, drink plenty of water and remember to save the bees! Look forward to receiving brief update before the end of August that will cover International Committees and discuss Sister District updates. Keep Key Clubbin!
