MOVEMENT 8CC is inspired by the movement of people and culture in Cambridge. It’s not your typical touristy Cambridge but instead, what is thriving below the surface of Cambridge. Each floor represents a different neighborhood and sub culture. We adventure out into the neighborhoods to discover hidden gems and unexpected destinations. There are two different types of floor plans to reflect the characteristics of each floor’s subculture theme - FLOW and DISPERSE.

TYPICAL FLOW FLOOR PLAN DISPERSE plan is the reminiscence of the crowd’s movement towards a commercial area and disperse back home afterward. People move in groups or alone, from A to B, with purpose, to a destination, and then back again. Disperse zooms in on a neighborhood and applies the neighborhood principles as we know them.




8CC-1 RECEPTION LOBBY [Rendering]

8CC-1 CHARLES RIVER // LIFESTYLE The 1st floor is inspired by the curves and movement of the Charles River. It is the starting point of our journey North through Cambridge and is planned with the “Flow” space planning concept. The curves help guide the users and visitors into the space and up the stairs or to the elevators to begin their journey.

THE HIDDEN GEM UNDER THE STAIR Lights are placed under the stair to represent Google’s birth constellation - Libra


8CC-3 MK [Rendering]

8CC-3 EAST CAMBRIDGE // LIFESTYLE The 3rd floor is inspired by the East Cambridge neighborhood, located near to the Charles River. This neighborhood has some of Cambridge’s best restaurants, a cool skate park and lots of outdoor space. This active floor is industrial and gritty and gets its inspiration from the cool neighborhood spots and hip Cambridge lifestyle. The speakeasy theme in the 3rd floor micro kitchen is a perfect example of the 8CC-3 vibe. Explore this floor for a hidden art studio, mail slots and a tattoo inspired gallery wall.


8CC-4 COFFEE CORNER [Rendering]

8CC-4 THE PORT // SCIENCE & TECH The 4th floor is inspired by The Port neighborhood of Cambridge, near to Kendall square. There is a density of biotech and pharma companies in this area, making 8CC-4 a commercial destination for science and tech. The 4th floor is the most technically advanced floor with nods to space, science and technology. Explore this floor for a secluded lounge, quiet room and lots of meeting space.

Its colorful FLOOR inclusive ELEVATOR LOBBYspirit - WEST makes everyone ELEV LOBBY - SOUTH 13 6TH 12 6TH FLOOR ELEVATOR LOBBY - SOUTH 7 5TH FLOOR feel welcome and energized. This is a community floor designed with bold colors and a lot of heart. The micro kitchen is designed like a small Cambridge record shop. Explore this floor for a massage room, a community room and a public book share.

DYNAMIC Federal Reserve Bank of Boston’s Fitness Center has been designed to enhance employee well-being as the organization highly respects wellness. Supergraphics in the entrance boosts user’s energy as soon as they walk in and make them excited. Space is designed around the curved perforated metal ceiling, which adds dynamics to the workout space and encourages users to explore other spaces The renovated amenities include - expanded cardio and weight area, two stretching areas, enlarged functional training area, dedicated spin studio, group fitness room, locker rooms and shower, private fitness director’s office, and consultation room. Existing fitness Center and related spaces were 6,140 sf. The renovated fitness center, with restrooms and lockers, is 11,600 sf an increase of 47%.

EXTERCISE ZONE The area is divided into two distinct zones: Weight Training and Cardio equipment. Cardio area includes 32% expansion of equipment and replacement of outdated equipment, entertainment wall with multiple screens showing cable TV with self audio capabilities. Safety improved by less overcrowding, increased occupancy and ability to move safely.

FUNCTIONAL TRAINING Dynamic space for reactive and strength training exercise. This area includes TRX equipment, synthetic turf flooring, throwing wall, free weights, kettle bells, etc. The space allows small group trainings but is intended for self directed fitness. There are storages within the space for equipment for weights like plyo’s. Safety was increased by less overcrowding, increased occupancy and ability to move safely. Acoustical privacy was improved by absorptive ceiling and flooring materials.

COLOR CHANGING LIGHT A dedicated spin studio is designed with high energy. The instructor bike is located on a raised platform. Room layout allows participants to focus on the instructor, improving instruction quality and reducing injury risk. A personal storage area within the room and bench are provided for changing shoes. Multiple scenes, options for the color change, and dimming lights add even more energy to the dynamic environment.

CLEAN MODERN LOCKER ROOM New modern appearance with light wood lockers not only improved flow but also the privacy. Enlarged room provides day use lockers and monthly rentable lockers. Restrooms have more showers with private charging areas, glass shower doors, tile walls, and floors. Clean and dirty towel areas are added to add convenience.

The ultimate goal was to maintain a unified culture across floors, and create a space that would allow for future growth and change, where individual employees or entire departments could move to other spaces or floors with minimal disruption and continued familiarity. To do this, the team bypassed the traditional programming process to create a kit of parts for the client that would align with the building’s configuration and rely on best practices and ratios to create a lean approach to the design and build out.

AMENITY DRIVEN To allow for maximum flexibility and equity between teams, each floor houses identical amenities, work, and meeting spaces. The third floor boasts town hall and telepresence rooms, cafeteria and roof terraces, genius bar, private conference room, and client greenroom, all outfitted with sophisticated A/V equipment. Never losing focus of their mission, a video screen plays interviews with patients. All employees have sit/ stand desks and connection to the outdoors is reinforced by green roofs, terraces, and daylighting.

BOLD BRANDING A clean and timeless white box design approach was implemented that Alexion could uniquely express their brand story. A compass rose is embedded in the floor, with cardinal points oriented toward important floor functions— demonstrating a symbolic path to life-saving therapies.

PROJECT BRIEF

CONCEPT STATEMENT

Primark is a fast-fashion company based in Ireland. Their target demographics are teens and young adults, while also offering a variety of options for all age ranges. With their large presence in the European fashion market, they are looking to expand to the United States. As the second biggest mall in America, King of Prussia in Pennsylvania was chosen as a flag shop to test their new concepts.

The goal of this project is to utilize social media as a mean of establishing a new brand image in the United States. Unique architectural features with reflective surfaces and large digital screens are incorporated to encourage customers to take pictures and share them on their social media.

CEILING FEATURE As a focal point of the space, ceiling elements are designed to grab customer’s attention from the entrance and encourage them to explore the area. The digital panel in the middle allows flexibility for frequent change of display. The geometry of the structure provides different experiences by the direction of the travel.

CONCEPT STATEMENT Place is a Modern California Cuisine specialized in wine pairing. As it is located in downtown San Francisco, the owner strived to make a strong connection to the Bay Area. The color gold was selected for San Francisco’s history of the gold rush. Floor plan and many design elements were inspired by wave motif to bring the ambiance of the bay area.

CURVE From the two-dimensional floor pattern to bar and seating, curved shapes continue throughout the space. It not only reflects the shape of the wave in the Bay Area but also helps the luxurious fine dining restaurant with relaxed ambiance.

CALIFORNIA ARCHITECTURE Another way of bringing California into the space is by incorporating characteristics of California’s architecture. California’s architecture puts a huge emphasis on the connection of indoor and outdoor space. By extending the ceiling plane out to the outdoor area, it successfully ties the spaces as a whole.

WINE GLASS MOSAIC Lights are inserted in wine bottles and placed as a mosaic in a shape of a wave, which reemphasizes the connection to the Bay Area.

FOLDED GRID The Grid is an organizing and measuring device, but it can be a problem of literal flatness. Working through the manipulation and photography of orthogonal grids on folded surfaces, they were translated into physical structures with materials properties.

Three different grids A, B, and C were created. They were folded to provide geometry and depth. Then, it was photographed to transfer as a two-dimensional surface. The photos were translated into the three-dimensional surface with wooden sticks and wire.

As they are photographed in with shadows, 2D projections were transformed into three-dimensional surfaces. The photos are traced and turned into to another two-dimensional object projected grid.

Then, structures of those objects are studied by folding and placing in an environment with shadow. Finally, three projected grids were combined to form a single object.

PLEATS [16 x 24” Museum Board]


This project examined the line, its segment and length, as it relates to surface, texture, and depth. First, it was started with the single articulation of line. Museum boards were folded into peaks and valleys, which act as grids in a third dimension. Then, through the alignments, overlaps, and slippages, different patterns were produced. By examining the tone and texture, spatial ambiguities were studied.

Through the interpretation of the composite images of pleated surfaced, half-toned drawings were created. In the science of lights, white is a mix of various colors. By using “bitmap” in Photoshop, RGB colors were offset. Bitmap implies one bit per pixel.
