Gaining Clarity Explaining the intricacies of how the people of EMI design a world of hope can be a challenge. However, complexity can be simplified with a few stories, photographs and some concise, measured outcomes. We hope the clarity offered in these pages informs you of our “what”, reveals our “how”, and expresses the passion which fuels our “why”.

Living the Story Together, EMI volunteers, interns, donors and staff impact individuals and whole communities by meeting physical needs and communicating God’s love in practical ways. In 2016, EMI Canada turned professional design and technical expertise into hope by serving Ratanak International in Cambodia, Reach One Touch One Ministries in Uganda, Benson Idahosa University in Nigeria, and YUGO ministries in Mexico. The visions of these ministries are to care for women rescued from human trafficking, to provide health care for isolated elderly in rural areas, to educate leaders of tomorrow, and to offer life-giving joy and direction to underprivileged youth. EMI turned each of these visions into practical, contextual, safe, and buildable master plans, facilities, and service infrastructure. In listening, learning, and working with these ministries, the people of EMI created just the right backdrop where life will thrive. Also, through the delivery of the Survey Practicum Program in Uganda, we brought training, mentoring, and discipleship to a new generation of young surveyors.
A Look Back, A Step Forward Whether contributions are counted in hours invested or dollars given, EMI leverages each many times over through the active involvement of our volunteers, interns and staff who directly impact invaluable lives. We pray that together, with your partnership, we can heed the call to design a world of hope.

Partnership with EMI Multiplying to Achieve Great Impact The Feeding of the Five Thousand is a well known Bible story (Matthew 14: 13-21) where Jesus multiplies five loaves of bread and two fish to feed five thousand men, plus women and children. We believe that God continues to multiply to achieve great impact. Through EMI, a gift of $1 mobilizes almost $11 worth of professional design services provided to client ministries in developing countries. Even more importantly, these gifts have and will continue to change precious lives of the physically and spiritually poor in the name of Jesus.

An EMI Story EMI & Ratanak International in Cambodia
Ratanak International is a Christian charity that has worked in Cambodia for over twenty-five years. It has provided emergency relief and has partnered with many Christian organizations to help orphaned and abused children. In 2004, Ratanak began to rescue and rehabilitate victims of sex slavery. To help these young women reintegrate into society, the Ratanak Achievement Program (RAP) was created. In 2016, Ratanak’s vision was to create a transitional home where residents could rest, heal, and learn vocational and life skills.
Engaging in lives... “So often, when you do something like engineering, it seems abstract. It seems far away from those lives, but it’s not. The role of EMI in creating that space is not abstract for those lives, it is absolutely central. It’s a very exciting process to see EMI engage in lives.” Brian McConaghy
Founding Director, Ratanak International

A Space For Hope An EMI team visited Phnom Penh in February 2016 to investigate the property and local construction practices. EMI’s task was to learn the vision of the ministry and the needs of its residents, and design a facility that would be tailored yet flexible, and practical yet comfortable. To bring this vision to life, the EMI team sought to understand the full story of the women that RAP aimed to help. Learning about the history of the country – the genocide, and the after-effects on the Cambodian people – while harrowing, exposed the challenges faced by these women. This facility will be more than a building. It will provide spaces to nurture community while offering quiet rooms for counselling and grieving. It will embody dignity, security, and peace for its residents. At the end of a six-month term, EMI’s deliverables to Ratanak included a 30-page report, a digital 3D model and a 34-page set of detailed building plans. These have been used to develop budgets, engage donors, employ contractors, and procure all required permits. By mid-2017, funds for construction have been raised, site preparations are complete, and construction is about to start. Soon this vision of hope will be a reality.
