Journeying Together
EMI Canada Executive Director, Greg Young, and his son Connor sit in church in Verrettes, Haiti (G. Young)
Message from the Executive Director In this annual report, you will see how EMI Canada lives out the idea of “journeying together”. Since 2002, we have journeyed with Christian ministries from project conception to completion. With some, we journey over many years, growing their capacity and effectiveness phase after phase. One such story is captured in “Our Continuing Partnerships”. Our journey is also internal, as we equip our board, staff, interns, and volunteers toward greater effectiveness. Finally, our journey is with our generous partners - individuals, families, churches, companies, and foundations contributing resources that strengthen our core and facilitate capacity for impact.
Journeying together in 2018 In 2018, with eight professional design staff serving in five different EMI offices, EMI Canada impacted more communities than ever by coming alongside 47 ministries in 12 countries with professional design services that will increase their capacity to provide education, health care, homes, and opportunities to meet Jesus.

In 2018, EMI Canada bolstered internal capacity on several fronts. We updated our IT infrastructure and transitioned to software subscriptions for our essential production tools. We improved member care services for our ministry staff, as they navigate the challenges of serving as missionaries in Canada and abroad, knowing that when done well, member care contributes to staff health and retention. In our ongoing efforts to recruit volunteers, interns, and staff, and to grow our network of partners across Canada, we strategically traveled coast-to-coast to present EMI at mission conferences, university campuses, churches, corporate boardrooms, and coffee shops. Finally, we updated communication tools, including our website, e-newsletters, and videos to keep our community across Canada informed as it prays, donates, and participates.
Journeying together through the past decade A snapshot along a journey tells only a partial story. In taking a long view, we see the arc of God’s blessing and faithfulness. A graph in “Our Finances” shows our financial journey over the past ten years. What emerges is a pattern of growth in EMI Canada’s capacity and impact – a journey that financial partners have enabled and taken with us.
Journeying together into the future EMI Canada’s future is full of opportunity and possibility. Our journey continues with existing ministry clients and with new ones who require our services. Technology continues to enable us to raise the standard of our deliverables, while our new database, introduced in 2017, allows us to keep excellent records and improve the way we measure impact. Meanwhile, our internship program invigorates EMI with youthful energy and passion, complemented now with Exploration EMI, a program piloted in 2018 by EMI Canada to introduce vocational ministry to high school grads and 1st/2nd year engineering and architecture students. Thank you for journeying with EMI Canada. Through your involvement and giving, we are able to maintain and develop staff, operate with excellence, and build sustainability. You, our partners, uphold our work and help fill our pages with stories of impact all over the world. This is how, together, we design a world of hope.
Greg Young Executive Director, EMI Canada

Our Calling EMI is a network of Christian design professionals who impact communities through developing people, designing structures, and constructing facilities. These facilities - hospitals, orphanages, schools, clean water projects, and more - serve communities and the church by meeting physical needs and communicating God’s love in a practical way. Our Vision: People restored by God and the world restored through design. Our Mission: To develop people, design structures, and construct facilities which serve communities and the Church.
3
Core Values EMI revolves around the person of Jesus and serves the global Church to glorify God through: Design: EMI works within the local context to design and construct culturally-appropriate facilities that are sustainable, affordable, and transformational. Discipleship: EMI develops people spiritually and professionally through intentional discipleship and mentoring. Diversity: EMI builds the Church by connecting people of diverse backgrounds, abilities, and ethnicities to demonstrate our love for God, our love for the nations, and the unity we share in Christ.

Our Staff
Mobilizing professionals around the world EMI Canada mobilizes full-time, faith-supported staff with various professional design backgrounds to work from the office in Calgary, Alberta as well as other EMI offices around the world. These staff members recruit and lead design professional volunteers and interns on short-term mission opportunities to countries where professional-level design is unavailable or inaccessible. The map below indicates where full-time EMI Canada project staff, as well as engineering and architecture interns from Canadian universities, served in 2018.

Our Financial History
EMI Canada over the past 10 years Over the past 10 years, EMI Canada has seen tremendous growth. Revenues have nearly doubled since 2008, while modest surpluses have allowed us to build a solid emergency fund to maintain sustainability as project and donation revenue fluctuate. Much of this can be attributed to growth in the staff team, from three support-funded staff in 2008 to eight support-funded staff and two centrally-funded staff in 2018. The result is an expanded capacity for impact around the world. In 2008, EMI Canada staff led or supported six design projects. That number, in 2018, has increased to 25.

Your Partnership with EMI Canada The Ripple Effects of One Dollar
At EMI, a core belief is that God wants to use our gifts to achieve great impact. To this day, we are still experiencing the ripple effects of people like Moses, David, Paul, and Jesus himself using their gifts to build God’s kingdom. In fact, Jesus says, “Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these...” (John 14:12) In 2018, each $1 donated to the EMI Fund mobilized almost $15 worth of professional design services. These services are provided to client ministries in countries and circumstances where professional design is either not available or not accessible. What’s more, the ministries we serve can operate with an increased capacity as a result of engaging EMI. This means that the impact on their communities will continue to ripple even further because of your generous gift.

Our Continuing Partnerships EMI Canada and Impact Ministries
EMI’s mandate is to provide professional design expertise to Christian ministries who are seeking to turn vision and hope into the reality of increased capacity, reach, and impact in the communities they serve. Sometimes the journey from vision to reality takes years to unfold and may be marked by diversions and challenges, as well as victories and moments of overwhelming joy. This narrative exemplifies the story of our journey with Impact Ministries in Guatemala.
Partnering for Kingdom Impact Established in 2000 by Canadian founders Les and Rita Peters, Impact Ministries operates in an under-served region of Guatemala, near the town of Tactic. At the beginning of its ministry, Impact Ministries secured a parcel of land just outside of town for its first school. In 2005, we sent a team to design this first school campus, opening the door for Impact Ministries’ Guatemalan administrators and staff to build and now operate a series of schools, medical & dental clinics, and Rio de Vida (River of Life) churches.
13
In 2012, God impressed on the hearts of Guatemalan church leaders His call to care for orphans. In response, Rio de Vida and Impact Ministries leaders began to envision the Vida Children’s Home to care for newborn babies abandoned at local hospitals and, once again, they reached out to EMI. In February 2015, an EMI Canada team traveled to Guatemala to create a three-phase master plan and supply the engineering and architecture for the Vida Children’s Home campus, comprised of an infant house, family-style children’s homes, staff and volunteer housing, offices, and classrooms, along with all necessary infrastructure. Les Peters, Impact Ministries’ Founder, reflected on the value of the long-term planning that EMI brought to the organization: “It was neat watching the EMI team synthesize all the thinking of the Guatemalan people.” He called the team’s presentation to Impact Ministries’ committee “remarkable” and “a birthing of [an idea] into something that was real”. With EMI’s report and drawings in hand to aid in budgeting, fundraising, and construction, the Infant House was completed in the fall of 2017. Securing government approval to operate as an orphanage took two more years of praying, preparing, and waiting, but in July 2019, Vida Children’s Home welcomed its first baby resident. We rejoice with Impact Ministries as they see their vision become reality, and we are grateful for the many partners who have been a part of our role in this journey: staff, volunteers, interns, and donors. Each one has made an investment that will bear fruit for years to come.
