designing a world of hope

Designing a World of Hope Carley is a little boy in Haiti. His mother died giving birth to him while his father, an aged man, had eight other children but could not care for any of them. At 18-months old, Carley was suffering from a parasitic infection and malnutrition. He couldn’t hold up his own head. It was at that point that he was discovered by Marc and Lisa Honorat, the founders of Haiti Arise Ministries, and brought under their care. After just three months of living with his new family at Haiti Arise’s Children’s Village, he was healthy, happy, and learning to walk. In 2011, four years before Carley was even born, an EMI team was hard at work in Grand-Goâve, Haiti designing the Arise Children’s Village where he now lives. The 11-person team included an architect as well as structural, civil, and electrical engineers. Over the course of nine days, they listened to the vision that God had given to Marc and Lisa. They investigated the site conditions, researched local construction practices, put together a master plan for the property, and designed the buildings.

Later in 2011, another EMI team returned to GrandGoâve to design Haiti Arise’s technical school and Heart to Heart Church, both of which required reconstruction as a result of the devastating earthquake the previous year. Haiti Arise completed the reconstruction of the technical school in 2012 and opened the first phase of the Children’s Village in early 2016. Carley was the first child to join a new family. For Carley, Haiti Arise, and many others, EMI is designing a world of hope.

Engineering Ministries International EMI is a network of Christian design professionals who are designing a world of hope in places of physical and spiritual poverty. Vision People restored by God and the world restored through design. Building God’s kingdom is about people. At EMI it is about our staff and the volunteers we serve alongside, the ministries we partner with and the people who will be served through our design. We strive to build into lives as we live out our calling where physical and spiritual needs abound.

Mission To develop people, design structures, and construct facilities which serve communities and the Church. These facilities (including hospitals, orphanages, schools, clean water projects, and more) directly impact communities by meeting physical needs and communicating God’s love in a practical way. Core Values EMI revolves around the person of Jesus and serves the global Church to glorify God through: Design EMI works within the local context to design and construct culturally-appropriate facilities that are sustainable, affordable, and transformational.

Discipleship EMI develops people spiritually and professionally through intentional discipleship and mentoring.

Diversity EMI builds the Church by connecting people of diverse backgrounds, abilities, and ethnicities to demonstrate our love for God, our love for the nations, and the unity we share in Christ.

The Value of EMI Canada Projects Since 2002, how has the “where” and the “who” of EMI design projects translated to value? Through these projects, EMI has mobilized hundreds of staff, interns and volunteers who have donated thousands of hours of consulting that greatly benefit EMI’s client ministries and the lives of those they serve.

Letter from the Board On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I want to thank our donors and those who have prayed for and encouraged the work of EMI Canada throughout the years. Through this support, we have been able to lead over 80 projects, and provide over 118,000 hours of professional design and engineering expertise to our client ministries. As a four-time trip volunteer, I have witnessed firsthand the amazing way God multiplies EMI’s impact for ministries and individuals in developing communities. EMI’s continued commitment to working in partnership with local ministries and local design professionals exemplifies our values of discipleship and diversity. These cross-cultural connections have also challenged us to broaden our thinking and perspectives. A wonderful example of this partnership can be found in the Survey Practicum, where past students have become the trainers, and taken real ownership and pride in passing on their knowledge. Thank you for partnering with us to change lives and to truly design a world of hope.

Partnership Opportunities EMI exists to meet a common need in developing countries: the need for available, affordable, contextual, and appropriate professional consulting. The EMI Fund The EMI Fund provides EMI Canada with the financial resources needed to equip and mobilize donors, volunteers, interns, and staff. Contributions to the EMI Fund go towards covering the daily operating costs and sustaining the long-term work of EMI, while ensuring compliance and accountability to all charity rules and regulations.

Student Sponsorship Since 2012, EMI has run a Survey Practicum program in Uganda to provide Civil, Environmental, and Geomatics engineering students practical, handson experience in the field of surveying. This program gives these students an advantage as they begin their careers and instills values of integrity, professional ethics, and the importance of their faith in their professional lives.

Project Sponsorship Typically, client ministries cannot cover the full cost that EMI incurs to deliver needed consulting services. Resources donated to sponsor projects help to close this financial gap, and enable EMI to continue to provide quality design to ministries serving the poorest of the poor.

Will you partner with us? Your support has the potential to significantly impact the lives of many of the world’s poorest citizens by providing designs for safe, efficient, and dependable facilities. Will you come alongside EMI and help us design a world of hope?
