POLARIZE
by Emily Kovacic
Issue #5 March 2017
Welcome to Issue #5 This issue is small but mighty and packed with images that stand for what I’m trying to push for with my photography. As this being the first issue in 2017, I must say that there is a lot I wish to achieve this year. First of all, I have decided to end E Minor Media and focus on Polarize. I even created a website in which I hope to have more interacts with the music community and not just be about my side of the story all of the time. Polarize stands for a lot for me. I want to feature as many in the music community as the artists. Each issue will now be featuring women music photographers. If you wish to submit to be featured email polarizezine@gmail.com. Thank you and enjoy!
What Does it Mean to You to be a Women Music Photographer? What it means to be a woman music photographer to me is to be powerful and determined. I fell into music photography by accident. I am a genetic scientist by day and a concert lover by night. I have been to hundreds of shows as a fan in my lifetime. 3 years ago my dad passed away and I found myself turning to live music. I started following Halestorm around, 55 shows in 3 years. I was always in the front row and became engrossed in capturing intimate moments of the show on my phone. Lzzy Hale the lead singer would often share my photos on her Instagram and twitter accounts. I ended up buying a really good point and shoot camera that I could get into venues to get better photos. Lzzy and my friend Becky who’s the front woman of a band named Callout encouraged me to go further with it. So here I am photographing shows such as Skillet, Alter Bridge and Lita Ford. It’s never to late to pursue something that gives you a feeling of freedom. Being a woman may be a challenge in any business but the women that encouraged me to do it are in a way harder industry to get ahead. I am taking their determination and channeling it. -Tara Lakatos Owner and Photographer Rock DNA Photography
For me, photography is freedom, passion, and joy. I connect emotionally with the musicians I shoot through this shared creative expression; documenting and stylizing their own passionate performance becomes mine. In particular, there is nothing quite like capturing the righteous anger of a great metal performance with all its raw power. Being a woman in this industry is tough as hell, but I’m happy to be here kicking ass and proving that any reservations or biases about women are pure mythology. I’ll keep chasing the golden shots until my body won’t let me anymore. -Megan K / Megan K Photography megankphoto.com @megan.k.photography
