Q&Awith..

Neverlyn

Interview By Lindsy Carr

1. Can you state your name and role? How did the band form? Anna Neitzel is the lead vocalist, Christy Bryant plays guitar, viola and sings, Nisha Rangel plays guitar and sings, Vanessa Valenti plays bass, and Zoe Wallach plays drums. Anna and Vanessa had been dreaming of starting a band since we were like 13, but we didn?t really come together as a band until Anna found Nisha through their music class. We put out an EP, then found Christy and Zoe recently to complete our lineup. 2. What is the meaning behind the name? At first we are calling the band ?Life As We Know It?but we thought there might be some trouble with that since there is also a movie by that same name. Anna is a hardcore Peter Pan fan and came up with calling the band Neverland. We tweaked that a bit to Neverlyn and we all loved that, so we went with it. 3. How would you describe your sound? Our sound really depends on the song. We have some songs that have more pop elements and other songs that have heavier aspects. All in all we consider ourselves a pop punk band. E Minor Media Magazine - 4

4. Your first single, ?6 Months Too Late?, was released at the end of February. How was it chosen as a single? We chose 6 Months Too Late as the first track to be released because we all fell in love with it while recording. While working with our producer in pre-production the song came together beautifully and we knew it was special. 5. Your debut album, Stuck In The Moment, was just released. What has the reaction from fans been like so far? We have been getting a ridiculously, overwhelmingly positive reaction from people. It?s been really humbling to hear such positive feedback after working extremely hard, for literally years, to create Stuck in the Moment. 6. How are the songs written and how do you think you grew musically during the recording process? Everyone in Neverlyn writes. One person gets an idea for a song and we all sit down and jam it out. Anna is usually pretty good with taking all of our ideas and putting them together into a cohesive song. 7. The song ?Fireball? features Tony Geravesh from Stickup Kid. How did the collaboration come about? Nisha and Anna had gone to see Stickup Kid with The Story so Far in Sacramento last September with some friends. One of these friends had befriended Tony during The Story So Far?s set and they all ended up getting pancakes after the show. Tony became a friend of ours and when we started recording we had written Fireball as a duet. We were rattling our brains trying to think of someone to sing the male part and we decided to ask Tony. It all just fell into place. 8. Was there a certain song that was the hardest to create? Each song had it?s own challenge, but in general everything went pretty smooth. One song that was particularly difficult was White Noise. There are numerous key changes throughout the song, so making it flow from each part to the next took some time. Recording all of the viola parts proved to be no easy task as well. 9. What do you want listeners to get out of your music? As completely clichĂŠ as it sounds, we want people to relate. We write music that we want people to identify with, to feel like they know someone else has felt the same way. Growing up, we all loved hearing songs that really resonated with us. When an artist could gracefully put into words and put emotions into songs that coincided with ours, it was something special, and we want to create that same feeling that musicians gave to us, to others. 10. Have you faced any difficulties as band? Being an all-female band, have you been treated or looked at differently from other bands? Finding a solid lineup was probably the most difficult thing we?ve had to do. We?ve had our fair share of member changes which always causes setbacks. Because we?re all female, we?ve definitely been treated differently. The amount of times we?ve been told both in person, and through comments on the Internet that our music is ?good for being girls? is offensive. One of the first acoustic sets Nisha and Anna performed was in Stockton and one band completely talked through their whole set in the back of the venue. When there?s 10 people there and 4 are talking it?s obvious. They were cordial and polite, however, during the next three bands, who all happened to be dudes. Even our own producer was initially hesitant to work with us. Due to our young age, Anna was only 16 when our first EP was recorded, and gender, he didn?t think we were serious about working with him. We?re not sure why it comes as such a shock that we can be just as equal as our male counterparts within the genre. 12. What are some of your goals for this year? We have a few different goals set for ourselves in 2015. One of these goals is touring. What we want more than anything else is to get on the road and play shows for people. We want to promote Stuck in the Moment as much as possible and hopefully gain some management this year. We additionally would like to gain a sponsorship from Taco Bell? because Taco Bell is life. 13. Is there anything else you?d like to share? We are so excited to continue on in our musical adventures. Thank you to everyone whose supported us with this crazy notion of making music a lifestyle. We can?t wait to get on the road and play for you, and we can?t wait to make some serious noise in this industry. E Minor Media Magazine - 5

G oodnight Neverland

Interview By: Lindsy Carr

E Minor Media Magazine -6

Goodnight Neverland is an alternative rock band from St.Petersburg, Florida. The band is made up of Kerry Courtney (vocals, guitars, keys), Jordan Tellone(bass), Jeremy Tellone (drums) and Christopher Brickman (guitars, keys). The band is currently working on new material and I had the chance to catch up with Kerry. When it comes to the bands formation, he shares ?Well, haha we formed quite a while ago. Jeremy was 10 years old when we started. At the time it was just the three of us. Jeremy, jordan, and I. We started actually playing out at bars and stuff a few years later in our early teens. We changed the name and direction of our band in 2010.? When it comes to their biggest inspirations, he says ?anything with feeling and emotion?, something that is easily heard in their music. He states, ?[some bands we] like [are] Sigur Ros, death cab for cutie, Sleeping at Last, Patrick Watson, Sufjan Stevens, etc the list goes on and on. For me, my mother is my biggest inspiration and I try and keep her alive through the songs I write.? Their last album ?Old Tree? was released back in April. As far as the writing process went for the album, Kerry explains ? I wrote most of the songs in solitude in my bedroom. I actually wrote "can't stop time" the day before we went into the studio. We didn't like one of the songs we were going in with, and we didn't want to settle, so I sat down and came up with that one. I don't like rushing while writing, but the structure and Idea of that song came out so fast. Recording that album was real fun. When it came to our parts, we really just let the creativeness of each individual flow in the studio, and it turned out to be our favorite recording session to date. Jordan and Jeremy are great at improvising in the studio. After drums and bass were recorded I pretty much just started on guitars and then keys/ piano, and after all the instruments were done, I moved to vocals, which is personally my favorite part. I love to keep things unwritten coming into the studio because sometimes the best sounds come from last minute ideas. There are so many little intricate sounds on this album that maybe no one would notice, but that's what makes it real cool and personal to us.? A song that really sticks out from that album is ?Mental Illness?. There is a lot of social stigma surrounding mental illnesses and Kerry hopes that listeners are able to connect with it. ?I'm glad you asked. That [song] is a special one. You know, doctors are so quick to shove pills down your throat when you have symptoms of anxiety or depression and most people are okay with that. Depression, anxiety, ptsd, bipolar, etc are real struggles, it can sometimes feel like they control your life, but you are not defined by your mental illness. You are not alone with how you're feeling, and the power of relating is so real and helps so much. I spent some time in a psych ward recently, against my will, and I have an even bigger passion towards those that are hurting and just want the message known that there is help out there and most times pills do more damage than good. I tried to kill myself on certain pills I was taking. I wasn't myself on them. The song is basically saying that you're not alone and there are folks that can help you and can relate with what you're going through.? In August, the band played in the UK and Europe, which then became their favorite tour. ?A few of the guys couldn't make it, so we had some of the dudes from Tides Of Man (who headlining that tour) play with us over there. I also played third guitar for them over there. UK and Europe were some of the best shows we've ever played. Visiting some of the cities like Paris, Budapest, Tours, London, etc was a dream. Met some lifelong friends in bands we've shared the stage with and fans, for sure. Kids coming out to shows for our band in cities I've never heard of across Europe was surreal. I can't wait to go back.? The band is currently working on a new EP. Kery shares ?We're actually going back in the studio to re-record most of the EP in a month or two for a few reasons, but we're really stoked to get back in there and spend quality time on these songs. We want the release to be smart, so we'll probably get some support and help when it comes to releasing it. Publicity wise.? Like any artist, they?ve continued to grow artistically in their own ways which adds to the writing process. ?We try to always progress. We have a more understanding of what we want, if that makes sense. Writing songs now is way different than what it was like a few years ago. I think we're all happy about the direction we're heading.? When it comes to what he wants new listeners to know, he says ?that we're a group of guys who have dedicated our lives to making passionate/ real music that we love playing for folks.? When it comes to dream tours? ? It would be a dream to tour with Death Cab For Cutie, Coldplay, or Sigur Ros. I think the list is pretty long for us haha. ? As for upcoming plans, ?We actually have a new single that we recorded earlier this year and it's almost finished being mastered, so we have plans to release that soon, maybe as a split with another band... And we are hoping to tour as much as possible. ?Some of their goals for the year include ?getting on some cool tours. Expanding our fan base. Write, record, and release new music. Hopefully get some of our songs on tv.? Social Media : Facebook : / Goodnight-Neverland Twitter: @gneverland Bandcamp: Goodnightneverland

W ordsandPhotosbyEmilyKovacic It may seem like a male dominated industry, however last year females were breaking through in the alternative - rock music industry. Not only were they gaining recognition among their fans but also with the popular bands. E Minor Media had the opportunity to sit down and get acquainted with a female fronted band that will surely be around for a long time. Moments after finishing their set we sat down with PVRIS (pronounced Paris). A year ago not many knew of this band, now they?re opening for bands like Mayday Parade, Pierce the Veil, and Sleeping with Sirens. From Lowell, Massachusetts this trio has made their mark in the past year. The trio is made of Lynn Gunn, Alex Babinski, and Brian MacDonald. They signed to Rise Records / Velocity Records as the first female fronted band to be signed to the label in June 2014. The band?s name was once Paris but was changed to PVRIS after legal issues. ?One of our other friends was like do it with a ?v?and so we did that and it ended up working out cause its actually like a thing kids do apparently.? Lynn says. The band?s influences consist of Rihanna and Florence Welch for Lynn as well as her agreeing with Brian on The Weekend also.

When

we spoke to the band they were currently on Rockstar Energy Presents the World Tour with Sleeping with Sirens and Pierce the Veil. We asked Lynn how the current tour was going, ?Awesome! It?s been super fun there?s been so many crazy kids and crazy nights so it?s really fun.? Usually with tour there is always crazy tour stories so we asked PVRIS if they had any. ?I feel like there?s so much going on at all times it?s hard to like pick out the crazy.? Lynn says. The band all recalled their trailer breaking down in the middle of nowhere at the beginning of the tour. Lynn also drove into the mud which got her stuck into a ditch and they randomly got pulled out of it by a guy. They also had another incident on this tour, ?Oh also this time around we played San Francisco there was like crazy homeless people around the venue and like we saw some crazy shit.? Lynn says. The band said that the show was great but as soon as you walked outside you were in danger. To the brighter side the band truly hopes one day to tour in Norway as well as the United Kingdom. The band?s debut album White Noise that was released in November of last year, hit 5 charts on the Billboard Chart including, # 88 on the Top 200, # 6 on the Alternative Chart, # 10 on Independent Albums, # 14 on Top Rock Albums, and # 88 on Top Album Sells. We asked the band what was the hardest song to write on White Noise? ?A lot of them are kind of hard cause we would like, we kind of went about like a different writing process in the studio cause we like kind of wrote as we went as we tracked or at least vocally like so I think the hardest one to write was ?Holy? for me at least cause I was like very nit picky with the lyrics and they way everything kind of flowed together, so I think that might have been one of the hardest to write.? Lynn says. PVRIS is about to embark on a whole year of touring. ?Yeah we are about to be gone forever. Then lots more writing and video scheming and photo scheming with Sam. Just hustling and stuff, so you?re not going to get bored!? Lynn says.

FeaturedAlbumReview Artist:All TimeLow Album:FutureHearts

In their twelve years as a band, All Time Low have maintained their status as a well-known band in the pop punk scene with six studio albums and a heavy touring cycle that makes their shows hard to miss. The band has again have teamed up with Dirty Work producer John Feldman for their sixth studio album, Future Hearts. Though their 2011 release garnered mixed reviews, this album goes beyond that and there is no need for comparisons. Now three years since their last release (2012?s Don?t Panic), the guys from Baltimore, Maryland are at it again with a cohesive, yet dynamic sound. The album begins with the slow and dreamy ?Satellite? as lead singer/ lyricist/ rhythm guitarist, Alex Gaskarth sings, ??Wishing on a star that's just a satellite, driving in a car with broken tail-lights/ Growing up with eyes glued shut?. The instruments being to build as the song progresses and leads into ?Kicking & Screaming?, a song that describes the importance of achieving the sound they want instead of being pushed into what will make them popular. Though Alex sings about ?chasing after rock & roll? Future Hearts is more of a pop-rock album which can be heard just a few songs in. The album?s second single ?Kids In The Dark? steps up the energy that seems to be lacking in some of the previous songs and is lyrically the opposite of the previously mentioned song. The song is easily catchy without being too repetitive and the engaging instruments along with strong vocals make it a song that you can listen to again and again. As the song says, they were left to ?burn out forever or light up a spark? and they?ve clearly done the latter. With this release they've re lit their old fuse and have gone to draw from old inspirations along with new ones. As stated in an interview with Kerrang, the track ?Missing You? takes cues from Green Day and singer Cassadee Pope. The acoustic based track seems effortless with smooth guitars and a soft drum beat. Alex?s song writing shines with comforting lyrics (Now don't lose your fight kid, it only takes a little push to pull on through/ With so much left to do, you'll be missing out and we'll be missing you) and I can easily see it joining songs like ?Therapy? and ?Remembering Sunday? as a fan favorite. The album?s two collaborations, ?Tidal Waves (feat. Mark Hoppus)? and ?Bail Me Out ( ft. Joel Madden) both standout in their own ways. Even though Mark?s voice allows for beautiful harmonies, it just too repetitive and ?Bail Me Out? has a very strong bass line but it almost sounds like a song written for Good Charlotte (well it was co-written by Madden). The true standouts of the album are ?Dancing With A Wolf? and the closer, ?Old Scars/ Future Hearts?. ?Dancing With A Wolf? has the power that I kept waiting for and the band delivers. It has the high energy that you?d get at a live show and the compelling beat lets drummer Rian Dawson?s abilities shine. The final track ends the album on a high note that will have you singing along to the upbeat, chanting chorus of ?We got scars on our future hearts, But we never looked back, no, we never looked back?. Though this release has strong as a whole, it still leaves me feeling like something is missing. Overall the band has stuck to their classic sound but I?m left waiting for that ?wow? moment that sets this album apart from everything they?ve done before. AlbumReviewsContinued.. Artist:SleepingW ithSirens Album:Madness

Orlando natives, Sleeping With Sirens, have gone through quite a few changes since the release of their 2013 album, Feel. Shortly following its release, guitarist/ lyricist Jesse Lawson left and the band went on a short hiatus. They later announced that they would be leaving Rise Records and went on to join Epitaph Records. Now on their fourth studio album, Madness, the band has teamed up with producer John Feldman (The Used, All Time Low) and Nick Martin (formerly of D.R.U.G.S) has joined the band on rhythm guitar and backing vocals. While the previous album featured many collaborations, this one does not and all lyrics were solely written by Quinn. Since their first two releases, the bad has started to stray away from their post-hardcore sound and now fit more into the pop-rock genre. The album starts off with the single ?Kick Me?, a song on the ?heavier? side of what you?ll find on the rest of the album with a sing-along chorus and use of ?woah oh?s? that adds to its live appeal. It is followed by ?Go Go Go? which has a more relaxed tempo and overall sound. The song is catchy and easily appeals to mainstream radio but commands the listener?s attention with a varied drum beat and powerful bass. Another song with a similar atmosphere is the aggressive, fast paced ?We Like It Loud? which has the sound I expected to hear throughout most of the album. The album then starts to take a turn with ?Gold?, a slow tempo song built around acoustic guitar. A song that quickly became a favorite of mine is ?Save Me A Spark?, a song that has anthem potential with its chant along vocals and lyrics that fans can connect to. It goes along with the theme of growing up and figuring life out which is present throughout the entire album. In ?Fly?, the lyrics seem like they?ve been written before which keep the song from being as intriguing as it could be but the instruments are engaging and Quinn?s vocal range is showcased nicely as he puts emotion into his voice. A song that really stuck out to me is ?November?. It is a slow, piano based song that doesn?t quite fit along with the rest of the album. Musically, it is nearly identical to the song ?Long Live The Kids? by We Are The In Crowd, which was also produced by Feldman. I didn?t think that I?d be making a comparison between these two bands and I?m surprised that Feldman didn?t pick up on these similarities. The album closes with ?Don?t Say Anything? which seems to be in line with songs like ?Kick Me? as it starts with fast paced drums and heavy guitars, but then seems so suddenly slow down and leaves me wishing that it would have kept its fast tempo. Overall, I?m finding myself pretty split on the record. It doesn?t sound very cohesive and sounds like it could have been two different albums that were then put together. Of course, as all bands do, their sound has continued to change over time and you can?t expect them to release the same album over and over again. However, this release seems to lack lyrics that are as mature and moving as their first two albums. The album has the ability to reach large audiences but some long term fans may find themselves a bit disappointed.

Artist:MarinaandtheDiamonds Album:Froot In 2012, the Welsh singer-songwriter Marina Lambrini Diamandis, better known as Marina and the Diamonds, became a known name with the release of her sophomore album Electra Heart. With that album, she wrote from the perspective of a fictional character, Electra Heart, who embodied the worst parts of pop culture. Now on her third release, Froot, she has killed of that character (no more blonde wig or heart on her cheek) and there are no big pop producers or co-writers. Instead, she has written all of the lyrics herself and the alternative-pop album was co-produced by David Kosten. The album?s opening ballad, Happy, sets up the mood and theme of the album. She sings ?It felt so sweet, it felt so strong It made me feel like I belonged And all the sadness inside me, melted away like I was free?. She is letting go of sadness and is now open to the possibility of finding peace within her. The song is relaxing and it allows listeners to connect with her personal lyrics. Along with ?Happy?, the title track was released early as part of her ?Fruit Of The Month? club where fans would be able to stream songs early. Her involvement with the visuals allows fans to be engaged and adds to the anticipation of the release. Instead of aiming to release a song that would later enter the Top 40 as her first single, she opted to release a song that would allow listeners to understand who she is as an artist and the control she has when it comes to her music. In the album, she goes through the emotions that someone feels when the have the break off a relationship. This is clearly heard in the slow, emotional track, ?I?m A Ruin?. The song has a very simplistic beat but it is well structured and the ?yeah, uh huh, ooh, yeah? repeated throughout the song is fun to sing along to. Since her first album, The Family Jewels, Marina has used clever tongue-in-cheek lyrics that are heard in songs like ?Can?t Pin Me Down?. She sarcastically sings ?Do you really want me to write a feminist anthem? I'm happy cooking dinner in the kitchen for my husband.? The song is about how people are quick to define a pop artist instead of realizing that they are a real person who is constantly changing. Many are quick to view feminism as a negative thing but Marina, a feminist herself, makes fun of how some think that feminists are ?men hating? and that she be a housewife if she chooses to. While I?m drawn to the lyrics in many of the songs, perhaps the most important is ?Savages?. The song makes you think of the things that drive human behavior, such as greed and envy. She sings ?another day, another tale of rape, another ticking bomb to bury deep and detonate/ I?m not the only one who finds it hard to understand, I?m not afraid of god, I?m afraid of man.? In an interview with Time, she explained that the song was inspired by growing problems such as rape culture and she wants people to start talking about these problems. Her awareness is significant and it makes me wish that more artists would write songs that could lead to important conversations. Throughout the album, Marina uses the power of her voice and her meaningful lyrics easily show how she has continued to grow over the years. She is confident, self-aware, and puts everything she has into her craft. Froot is an album that clearly needs to be listened to. Reviewed By: Lindsy Carr

Artist:Smallpools Album:Lovetap Smallpools highly anticipated album was released on March 23, 2015. This Los Angeles based band first hit the scene in 2013. Seven months after moving to Los Angeles they signed with the major record label ?RCA.? The band made its live debut at the Brooklyn Bowl on July 13, 2013. The band includes members Sean Scanlon ? vocals, keyboards, Mike Kamerman ? guitar, Joseph Intile ? bass guitar, Beau Kuther ? drums. The group took nearly 2 years to develop the album ?Love Tap.? Critics are saying the album is 45 minutes of catchy choruses and upbeat pop. The albums top songs are ?Dreaming? and? Karaoke,? New songs ?Street Fight,? ?Admission to Your Party? and ?9 To 5? are also all catchy tunes. The group is bringing back the 80s cheerful beats and dance beats. Their rhythmic sound and brass hard bass gives the album a different feel. According to critics they are the new 80s band of 2015 which is a theme that many artist are choosing to take on this year. They have already released their tour dates which will start on April 14 with the cover song Love ap being the name of the tour as well. Artist:FallingInReverse Album:Just Likeyou As a fan of Falling In Reverse for a year or two, ?Just Like You?really surprised me! The band always makes catchy songs, but their new album is filled with relatable lines track after track. This album is a new twist for them, and I like it! Some guitar parts from past albums remain, keeping the same sound that their fans love, but at the same time changing things up to please the ears. That is indeed what they have achieved with this album. From the song ?Just Like You?containing a catchy beat, to ?Brother?with it?s heartfelt meaning and tear ridden story, this album is just the right mix of emotions. ?Get Me Out?holds a story that all high schoolers can relate to, showing them that a lot of people have a hard time fitting in at school. For those of you with a more rowdier side, ?Die for You?and ?The Bitter End?bring out a more fast paced beat that . Although this album is a different blend, the crossing of clean vocals and unclean are just right, making ?Just Like You?something that can be enjoyable even for someone who isn?t a fan of their previous music. In my opinion, no two songs sound the same, which is just another reason why this album won?t get old too fast. Whether you're an old Falling In Reverse fan, or just stumbling across them, this album is definitely one that will be stuck in your head for days! Reviewed By: Samantha Manthei

Artist:TtileFight Album:Hyperview

Following their full length release of "Floral Green" in 2012, Title Fight has emerged with a new record this year, revisiting a punk rock infused sound. Hyperview's first track "Murder Your Memory" fades in like a cyclone as guitars and drums quickly fill in the empty space with a steady beat and beautiful melody. Soft vocals take over the verse giving a calm vibe to the album's opening moment. There's a mix of tranquility and unease that gives a complexity to the song. Single "Chlorine" then bursts open. With heavy guitar, bass, and drums, this track really brings the album to life. The instrumentation is front and center as the vocal floats in and out like background noise. Again, the chaotic arrangements of the song differ from the laid back vocal approach, creating a mixed bag for the listener. "Hypernight" is straight forward in execution, but perhaps a bit forgettable, getting lost in between stronger tracks. The echoey vocal prowess of Jamie Rhoden remains through the majority of the reflective "Mrahc." "Your Pain Is Mine Now" is a stand out for the record, with a slower, dreamlike opening, and full, yet lilting, vocals. A memorable hook kicks in, "I know you're scared/ Don't cry your eyes out," before the truly sensational musical break and soft "ah's" leading into the final chorus. "Rose of Sharon" is powerful in presentation, showcasing loud, demanding vocals with more of an emotional build than previous tracks. In the back half, the track takes on a lighthearted approach, leading into the fastly paced "Trace Me Onto You." The wishy-washy vocals grow secondary as they fade into blaring guitars and pounding drums. About halfway through, the track reflects a new chord progression and overall feel, almost as though it is a stand alone interlude. "Liar's Love," "Dizzy," and "New Vision," end Hyperview in a similar manner, highlighting a shoegazing theme. The album is, for the most part, an easy listen with simple lyrics that barely form cohesive thoughts and sentences. Each song is jumbled with dazed expression and thought-provoking imagery. Overall, this is a decent effort put forth by Title Fight. Reviewed By: Brooke Girard
