Vans Warped Tour July 15th

Third Warped Tour that I’ve shot, so I’m supposed to know what I’m doing by now at this right? It’s getting dropped off and having to run around half of the venue to get my credentials and then sprinting in to purchase a schedule and quickly figure out what bands I want to shoot and what times they go on. It was extremely hot and I had a bottle of water downed in no time. Last year it rained and I was trapped to shoot in the pavilion area where they put all the main stages, this year I was excited to go around the venue and from stage to stage, much like my experience my first year shooting it. My trusty schedule in the notes section of my phone was set and off I was to shooting. I originally wasn’t shooting till 1:00PM and picked a band to shoot at noon since I was there in ample time. I ended up shooting I See Stars first which was in the pavilion and brought back feelings from the previous year, not the best way to start, no offense I See Stars. Next, was Issues. Stage was decked with Pokemon and I wondered if Issues predicted it making a come back… Issues is always a must shoot for me. The energy they bring to the stage is phenomenal. I was feeling better after shooting them and had hope for the rest of the day. Literally running to Crown the Empire as their set started not long after Issues first three songs. Their stage setup was my favorite of the day. Again, another must shoot band for me and they didn’t disappoint.

Next I was shooting Bad Seed Rising before a much needed break. Photos of them had popped up on my Instagram from Warped and I knew I had to shoot them, plus I’m all for female fronted bands. I took two of my favorite photos from Warped this year during their set. If you haven’t checked this band out yet, do it! I was so happy that it didn’t look like it was going to rain even though I knew the forecast said there was a chance. As I was waiting to shoot The Color Morale I felt a few drops of moisture, being Warped Tour I assumed someone was throwing water around since it was so hot. I was wrong. About a song in it started raining well enough that I had to continuously wipe my lens off and keep shooting. This lead to some cool rain pictures until I decided that I shouldn’t let my camera or the rental lens I had on it get as wet as it was getting and put it in my bag and ran out of the pit getting rained on. I wanted to buy the grey cutoff shirt Issues was selling and needed to wipe my camera off so in the midst of the rain I convinced myself that I needed this shirt one, because I liked it and two, to dry my camera off, so I decided to head to their tent on the other side of the venue. By time I got there and purchased the shirt the sun was out as if it never rained. (Shoutout to the Issues shirt for drying my camera off.) Avion Roe was another band I shot thanks to Instagram and got another favorite shot of the day during this set. Unfortunately, I couldn’t stay long and once I got that shot I had to run to the pavilion to shoot Emarosa, because I was not missing that. Emarosa is probably my favorite shoot of the day because the lead singer was all in the crowd and on the barrier, very entertaining and a great shoot. I’m also now a fan of their new album, 131, which you all should listen to! Jenna McDougall is something that makes Tonight Alive’s set one you can’t miss. She is a very theatrical person to shoot as well. She gets the crowd very involved and I got another favorite shot of the day from this set. Mayday Parade is one of my favorite bands. I also never thought I’d be that close to Derek Sanders’ bare feet. That is all I took from shooting that set. I had heard something’s about The Heirs and decided to shoot them. They were cool and I liked the vibe they gave. Unfortunately, at this point in the day I couldn’t stay for long and grabbed a couple shots. Finally the moment I had been waiting for since I hit the point of I’m hot, exhausted, and hungry, was my last shoot of the day, Motionless In White. They’ve been a band that I’ve wanted to shoot for awhile now. They’re interesting and intriguing all at once. They were also covered in black long clothing and I was wondering how they were surviving in the heat, clearly they were pros at doing that unlike myself. Relief was the first thing that came to mind when I was done shooting Warped Tour for the year, the second was hunger and sitting in an air conditioned car. Warped is a long draining day, that crazily I would do over and over again…and eat more food of course. It’s such a different environment and that’s why it’s so special to shoot, that’s why you have to shoot it. I can’t be more grateful for being able to shoot this tour for the past three years. I can only hope that one day I’ll be lucky enough to be on the tour seeing all the new kids in the photo pit as I smile knowing that they’ve finally got here in the moment shooting Warped Tour. Enjoy my photos from Vans Warped Tour 2016 at Burgettstown, PA.

Marianas Trenc

Chasing Storms... What has the SPF 80s tour been like so far for Canadian band Marianas Trench? I sat down with the band at the Millvale (Pittsburgh), PA date to find out. For one it’s been full of storms. The band has already had two instances where lighting has struck near them! Mike, bassist, recalled of the tour date in Wilmington, North Carolina where the venue basically got struck by lighting and it was raining so hard that the roof began leaking causing them to have to put a tent up inside the venue to protect all of their equipment. A sound check also couldn’t take place because the power went out and the VIP Meet and Greet was forced to do a storytelling like thing, “It was the most audible day we’ve had in a long time.” In Ashville a couple days later lighting struck a tree close to where two of the members were out record shopping. There were also a chance of thunderstorms for this night’s show as well, but thankfully it passed the area. A day in the life of the band can be described as busy. One of the biggest challenges the Marianas Trench was having on this particular day was the one bathroom with the one shower that they all had to use. It was lining up and waiting their turns and having to deal with the bathroom having shag carpet in it and the drain not going down. “We’ve all gone through the necessary evil of process in this case we’re still shaking it off,” Mike said and Matt, guitarist, added, “It ruined my day, we’ll leave it at that.” Since storms having been chasing the band around during this tour I asked them what their favorite city to tour in the states was. “There’s so many good ones. We’ve had a lot of awesome days of on this tour. I don’t know the shows are always great our fans are always rambunctious wherever we go. You have a day off in a beautiful town with some nice restaurants and good weather. We were down in Florida in St. Petersburg had a day on the beach together which was fun I bought a kite, I tried to fly it, it didn’t work then a thunderstorm came so it was not ideal conditions,” Matt said. The band also likes the south even though touring it in July is not ideal, “It was so hot. I couldn’t play and my hand kept slipping up the guitar the whole time,” Josh, lead singer recalled of one of the shows there. Now getting into Astoria and the rest of the band’s music. It was announced during the show before playing “Who Do You Love?” will be the next music video as the band told me filming for that would begin around Labor Day. Good news, we can expect another three music videos from this album! Do Marianas Trench have a favorite song from all of their albums? Mike said that it’s tough because the newer stuff always feels more exciting, but he had to go with ‘”Astoria.” Josh had a different approach to this question though, “I don’t have a favorite. Honestly, I don’t. To me all the songs sort of each kind of have there own life and I have a different relationship with them some that are more emotional or somewhere where the production is craftier. I find it more inspiring if the current song that you’re writing is your favorite.” that the vibe is a huge, huge part too.” Interview continued on Page 47. 36- Polarize Magazine

Astoria was recorded in Josh’s apartment and I asked if that is something that they would like

to do again in the future. Josh had this to say, “Yeah, not exclusively cause studios are good too and I have one so we should use it (laughs). But yeah its sort of fun doing that on location sort of recording because you can really create like a vibe for whatever the record is you’re working on you know. With Astoria we sort of redid my whole apartment in all 80s memorabilia everywhere and like vinyl’s all over the place and that was the first time I think as a producer I sort of actually thought about vibe versus just like, just the song and what goes into it which I honestly learned from Chad Krueger cause when we were working on his Nickelback record that sort of, in a different way, was the same kind of thing where he was like kind of going all over the world and renting houses and doing it like that. I never really thought of doing that before. And anytime that I had seen people do that kind of thing. I always just kind of thought like that’s a lot of effort for something that’s going to be more challenging recording environment but now having worked on it I realize I sort of learned the lesson that the vibe is a huge, huge part too.” For those of you who haven’t heard of Marianas Trench before, “I would love if just anybody just discovers our band to give more then one or two songs a chance because we are quite what we play covers a wide spectrum and… one of those sort of album tracks, like one of the opener or closer ones cause that’s a cool thing we do that I don’t think a lot of people do as well as the ones that are more single style and then make an opinion if you like it then keep digging you know there’s a lot of stuff out there,” Mike said. And to the loyal fans, the band is very thankful for the support and very fortunate that they can tour all of the countries that they can. facebook.com/marianastrench Twitter: @mtrench Instagram: @mtrenchofficial www.marianastrench.net

Moving Forward...

At the end of this issue I’ve asked myself, “Where is my work going to go from here?” One thing is for certain, that I will be bringing many more band features into feature issues. Marianas Trench has been a favorite of mine for years and it was such an honor to feature them in this issue. Mostly importantly I’m going to keep shooting all the shows and I can to keep progressing forward to my goals. Thank you for reading issue number 3. - Emily

Special thanks to the following: - Cara Wodnicki - Jessica Valiente - Marianas Trench - Vans Warped Tour - Cami Opere - UMusicians -
