It has been 10 years since we welcomed the 15 students of the first intake in 2001. That year was challenging for the region in light of the events that followed 9/11, however we still always remained optimistic regarding the potential Dubai had, not only as one of the centres of international travel and tourism, but also as the destination for world class education. Since the beginning, we have partnered with Ecole h teli re de Lausanne and ensured that our standards of academic excellence are set to the highest benchmarks. In recent years, The Academy has also developed a regional training and research centre, in addition to having launched its fully accredited Masters Programme. Over the years, we have seen more than 300 young men and women of 60 different nationalities joining The Academy and developing their passion and talent in the hospitality and tourism industry. Today we are proud to say that many of the graduates have built careers with such prestigious global companies like Four Seasons, Ritz-Carlton, Kempinski, Hyatt and indeed Jumeirah, where they continue to achieve brilliant results and are great ambassadors for this institution. As the hospitality and tourism industry grows, the employment it creates is forecast to rise from 258 million jobs today to over 323 million by 2021. It is one of the most dynamic and innovative industries that inspires, enhances, and pushes competition and entrepreneurship at a global level. By educating and supporting the next wave of talent, we hope to breed entirely new markets and opportunities not only for the industry’s global expansion, but to foster the cultural understanding between different regions and nations, and also support the developing economies. I am delighted to congratulate The Academy, its faculty and students, on its 10th anniversary, and am confident in our future achievements as a centre of academic excellence..

How quickly time passes! Whilst it is ten years since our first students arrived (October 6th 2001), it was in late 1999 when the story really began. This was when Jumeirah made the decision to proceed with the plan of developing and managing the country’s first quality academic institution specialising in business hospitality management education. The decision was made with the objective of supporting the growth and development of the local hospitality sector.
Ron Hilvert Managing Director The Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management
It almost seems like yesterday when we made the ambitious decision to formulate our mission and vision to achieve the highest international level of academic quality; when we witnessed our first day of construction and recruited our first faculty and staff members; when our degree programmes successfully secured the formal Ministry of Higher Education & Scientific Research accreditations; when we finalised our academic association with Ecole h teli re de Lausanne and when we welcomed our first students. The winding path we have taken over the decade has certainly been exciting, challenging and very satisfying. We did not expect a straightforward journey and it was not. As with life itself, which presents numerous challenges and must be addressed with confidence, so has our journey. It has been a tremendous team effort to have come to the point where our mission and vision are genuinely achievable. As with all ambitious ventures, we must now look to the future and the next decade and we do so with even greater enthusiasm than when we embarked on our journey a decade ago. There are so many people to thank and too numerous to mention. Above all however, I wish to thank all our alumni and students who made the decision to start their professional careers and undertake their degree programmes with us. It is you who will travel the world and grow our academic reputation. I am confident that you will do so with great distinction.

OUR H E R I TA G E An inspiring and rapidly growing portfolio of hotels and resorts, including iconic hospitality landmarks such as Burj Al Arab, combined with signature service, has secured Jumeirah’s position as one of the world’s finest luxury international hospitality management group. The Group’s activities are, however, not restricted to hotel and resort management but have also successfully extended to other ventures such as the luxury serviced residences brand Jumeirah Living; the spa brand Talise; Jumeirah Restaurants; Wild Wadi Waterpark and The Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management. Building on this success, Jumeirah Group became a member of Dubai Holding, a collection of leading Dubai-based businesses and projects and extended its portfolio with world-class properties in London, New York, Germany, the Maldives and China. As part of Jumeirah Group, The Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management is integral to a group destined to be a world leader in hospitality services. The supportive backing of this prestigious group accompanied by a close proximity to several of the Group’s hotels and resorts, ensures that The Academy’s graduates will have real-world experience as well as the opportunity to interact with top hospitality and tourism professionals.

Professor Michel Rochat General Director Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne
EHL is honoured to pay tribute to Jumeirah’s vision of establishing a benchmark Academy in the UAE and especially to Gerald Lawless and Ron Hilvert who played key roles in achieving this vision by approaching a renowned academic partner who could support them in the realisation of their dream. In the aim of contributing to The Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management’s expansion, EHL has been a permanent partner assisting with concept refinement, facility development guidance, academic assistance and audits. We strongly believe that The Academy has succeeded in maintaining high standards thanks to the consistent work of its faculty and staff to deliver the study programmes. After 10 years, as a proof of the successful mutual cooperation, we can see that many students from The Academy have not only come to study in Lausanne but also EHL students are encouraged to go to The Academy as a semester abroad experience. We are celebrating 10 years: it marks an important step in The Academy’s life and in our relations but we realise this is only the beginning and we trust that many more decades will follow. We wish the very best to The Academy and we affirm our support as we move forward together with the growth of both of our institutions. Finally, I would like to congratulate the graduating students and express my honor to participate in their Ceremony.

OF OUR JOURNEY
Although it has been 10 years since the inception of The Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management, the seeds for the foundation of the institution were sown in 1999. It was on this momentous occasion that Jumeirah made the decision to formulate its plan of managing the country’s first quality academic establishment that specialised in business hospitality management education. From an establishment that exuded an almost intimate boutique feel to the unparalleled and commanding educational landmark it has now become, The Academy has definitely come a long way. While the first intake had a modest batch of just 15 students, The Academy was always at the forefront when it came to technology in the region. In fact, it was the first Academy in the region to have a campus wide wireless network. While The Academy still looks as elegant as it did 10 years ago, there have been a lot of new additions both around campus and in every classroom, extending great pride amongst students and their surroundings.

OUR SUCCESS IS A TESTAMENT OF
INCOMPAR ABLE EXCELLENCE It is the pure commitment and dedication of The Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management that has ensured that the institute has grown from strength to strength. From a modest initial student body of 15 students to a present figure of over 300 students originating from 60 countries, there has been an obvious visible growth. In September 2010, The Academy also launched their inspiring postgraduate programme - Master of Science in International Hospitality Management. A walk around the campus reveals the numerous additions and positive changes that have been implemented. From an impressive new building to the introduction of designated office areas, the attention and detail paid to the basic infrastructure has been remarkable. The Academy has also been consistent in enhancing the existing facilities. The tennis courts have been entirely refurbished while the gym now houses new state-of-the-art equipment. The Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management has been meticulously planned to surpass the requirements of its international students and the campus provides generously appointed individual accommodation, built specifically to fulfill this purpose. It is for this very reason that The Academy is continually upgrading and refurbishing studios to facilitate the complete comfort of each of its students. To this date, The Academy boasts of maintaining its stature as an unprecedented establishment that is completely professional in nature. It continues to be a forerunner in terms of technological advancements within the region, while the maintenance and facilities team are still second to none.

M O M E N T S & M I L E S TO N E S 2001-2011 The Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management is a testament of a long term vision to provide excellence in education within the hospitality, travel and tourism industry. With over a decade of achievements, The Academy has now established itself as a well-renowned institute that is celebrated across the world for its innovative culture, exemplary educational standards and its exceptional campus facilities. Here are some key milestones that made this journey a success.
FOUNDATIONS LAID TO THE ACADEMY August 1999 The year 1999 was the beginning of a new legacy. Right from the initial stages of conceptualising to the primary meeting with the Ministry of Higher Education & Scientific Research and the consequent decision to proceed with the Associate and Bachelor of Science degrees, The Academy was the first new college in the country to be accredited by the Ministry. From the humble beginnings in a port-a-cabin, Ron Hilvert, The Academy’s Managing Director, held a preopening ceremony and commenced on the ambitious task of achieving exemplary educational standards in the hospitality industry.
ACADEMIC ASSOCIATION WITH ECOLE HÔTELIÈRE DE LAUSANNE July 2000 The vision of The Academy was sealed in 2000 when it formally signed an academic association with Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne, the world’s oldest and one of the most reputable hospitality management schools. This association has been in place since and the agreement led to the subsequent selection of The Academy’s first faculty members as well as the recruitment of the first batch of students. The Academy opened its doors to its first intake of students in October 2001.1

FIRST BATCH OF STUDENTS GRADUATE FROM THE ACADEMY November 2005 The Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management celebrated the graduation of its first ever batch of students in 2005. All 15 students who graduated secured excellent positions in the hospitality industry with leading companies locally and internationally. Several students successfully joined Jumeirah while others found positions with Kempinski and other prestigious organisations.
THE ACADEMY EXPANDS WITH NEW EXTENSION February 2007 The Academy undertook an expansion of its campus in 2007 with two new auditoria, additional classrooms as well as a dedicated learning resource centre. Consistent review of the curriculum was also conducted to ensure that all academic content remained relevant. New professional development programmes that met the needs of industry professionals were developed and this helped to build greater capabilities within the hospitality sector. At this stage, The Academy was proud to see an intake of over 200 students from 45 different countries.
FIRST EVER EUROCHRIE CONFERENCE HELD OUTSIDE OF EUROPE AT THE ACADEMY October 2008 The Academy was chosen as the venue for the first ever EuroCHRIE conference outside of Europe and this was due to Dubai’s status as one of the most exciting and vibrant hospitality and tourism destination. My first impression of The Academy was certainly one that showed it had a long life ahead of it, professional, experienced faculty from around the world and a truly great environment to study in. My initial involvement was through Mr Michael Kitts, Director of Culinary Arts who I have known for many years. I have been involved in several restaurant projects, also cookery demonstrations which have always been to a more than eager audience!
The relationship between The Academy and Jumeirah Group is one that helps our company grow. We have some of the most fantastic iconic hotels in the world, but without the right talent inside these hotels, building relationships with our guests and giving them a reason to return time and time again then we would never be successful.
I look forward to continuing this association with The Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management. It has been incredible over the years to see how the quality of students continues to improve with so many more wanting to become a part of this great industry.
The Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management Page 21
Students from The Academy are a large part of our success. The interaction between the students, Jumeirah leaders and industry professionals over their time at The Academy really helps us spot the top talents and invite them to join our company after the students graduate. We often find that students from The Academy help us move with the times and keep ahead of the game with their innovative thoughts and ideas. From the very first graduating class till now, we have hired more and more students every year and we will continue to do so. These students are the future of our industry and I’m glad that they are a part of the Jumeirah family.
