I have graduated in July 2019 at the Architecture School of the University of Florence with a Final Degree Project “Ecomuseum of Pratomagno”, a project of recovery and improvement of an abandoned village, located in the Apennine mountain range of Pratomagno in Tuscany, with the aim of limiting the phenomenon of mountain depopulation by creating new spaces for the community activities. After some experiences in italian studios, I decided to go abroad to compare my idea of architecture with the one of the other countries and I lived in Granada for several months, working for an architecture studio with an international environment.

ECOMUSEUM OF PRATOMAGNO Final project | Prof. F. Rossi Prodi, Prof. V. Lingua, Arch. D. Aurilio 2019

Depopulation of mountainous areas began in Italy after World War II but is still a problem today in many regions of the country. It represents the most drastic aspect of a much wider process of land abandonment and with it the related activities, following the rapid process of industrialization and the search for higher life standards. The subject of this thesis is the study of an eco-museum in the Apennine mountain range of Pratomagno, in central Italy, which can contribute to limiting the phenomenon of mountain depopulation. The primary objective of this eco-museum is to encourage the local inhabitants to rediscover their own territorial identity by frequenting a cultural district made of a network of museums, educational centres and places of historical and artistic relevance within the territory. In other words, being not only an incentive to tourism, this sort of “spread museum” aims to involve the resident population, together with local associations and institutions, in order to protect their cultural assets and make them known to visitors. In support of this thesis, two critical areas have been identified in the municipality of Loro Ciuffenna, where we suggest a project of recovery. The first area, called “La Baita”, is located along the panoramic route that connects Loro Ciuffenna with the mountain villages of Chiassaia, Anciolina and San Giustino Valdarno. The idea is to redevelop the various historical pathways of the area and strengthen its value by replacing the existing building, in a poor state of preservation, with a “Visitor Centre”. At about 30 minutes walk, one can reach the second area: “Roveraia”, an abandoned village whose name indicates a strong presence of oak trees(1) and that was one of the scenes of the War of Liberation in the Pratomagno area during the Second World War, as evidenced by the poor state of most of the buildings. The project, through the construction of housing and laboratories, aims to recover not only the architectural value, but also its historical memory and the landscape. If the “Visitor Centre” is a crossing point, “Borgata Roveraia” is a place to stop and reflect. NOTES 1. Rovere is the common name for Oak.

ANTONIO LUPI HEADQUARTER Laboratorio di Progettazione V | Prof. F. Arrigoni | a.a. 2017-2018 Team: E. Amidei, F. Bettarini, M. Boschi

The project aims to be the main business center of the Antonio Lupi company in Stabbia (FI). It consists of an office centre, a showroom, a business museum and two processing areas: one for wood and one for glass. The project takes into account the distinction between the flow of workers and that of visitors, clearly separating the entrances and accessible outdoor spaces. The lot borders to the South on the city, and to the North on countryside. For this reason, on the North side the processing area has a continuous glass window that, showing the view of greenery, contributes to the well-being of the worker.

URBAN RENEWAL OF THE PORT OF LIVORNO Winning masterplan in the course

Laboratorio di Progettazione IV e Urbanistica II | Prof. F. Rossi Prodi, Prof. M. Scamporrino | a.a. 2016-2017 Team: E. Amidei, M. Altemura, F. Bettarini, M. Boschi, B. Capaccioli

The project consists in redeveloping a part of the Port of Livorno. The project stems from the continuation of two road axes of the urban fabric of the historic centre up to the main square where they meet. The buildings are “grafted” on these two axes and are intended for various uses, mainly commercial, residential and administrative. The highlight of the project is the elevated park, with parking lots at the lower levels. The objective is to integrate the port area, as much as possible, into the city space, so as to create new elements that enrich the city.

HOUSING FOR THE PORT OF LIVORNO Laboratorio di Progettazione IV e Urbanistica II | Prof. F. Rossi Prodi, Prof. M. Scamporrino | a.a. 2016-2017 Team: E. Amidei, F. Bettarini, M. Boschi, F. Nicassio

The project aims to create a “fulcrum” within the Port of Livorno. The building embraces the square, which is the meeting point of the two main axes of the new urban layout of the port. This is the heart of the project, closed only on three sides, creating an overlook of the sea. The square becomes a reflection of the building’s façade, engraved by horizontal lines, between which green islands are casually set . The building has various functions: it mainly consists of residences and offices, but there is also a hotel and a museum. On the ground floor there is a commercial area, fully integrated with the square in front.

MULTIMEDIA CENTRE FOR THE ISLAND OF ASINARA IN SARDINIA Laboratorio di Progettazione Ambientale | Prof. A. Trombadore | a.a. 2016-2017 Team: E. Amidei, P. Brandini, F. Caporali

The project aims to enhance the value of the Island of Asinara by including functions and elements of cultural and collective interest, so as to encourage tourism and the growth oresudent’s repopulation of the area. The Multimedia Museum is the result of the redevelopment of an old carpentry in Cala d’Oliva, with the addition of a walkway that connects the hilly course of the land with the building. In the hill there is also a system of terraces that can also work as outdoor area for recreational use. The entire project is designed with the use of sustainable technologies with a low environmental impact.

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION CENTRE FOR PORTA LAKE IN TUSCANY Laboratorio di Progettazione dell’Architettura III | Prof. A. I. Volpe | a.a. 2015-2016 Team: E. Amidei, F. Caporali

The project consists of two separate architectural interventions connected by a pedestrian path along the stream that leads to Lake Porta. In the first area there is the Visitor Centre, which introduces the visitor to the Natural Park, while the second area hosts the Environmental Education Centre, equipped with guest quarters, educational laboratories and a refreshment area. The whole project was born to raise awareness of the importance of this natural area, with the aim of enhancing it and respecting its identity.

OPEN YOUR WALL Workshop “Urban Renewal of the Northen Section of Jinchuan Gate” Nanchino - Florence | September - November 2017 | Prof. M. De Vita Team: E. Amidei, B. Barni, R. Coppa, A. Dedja, C. Ketcheian

The project area presents an heterogeneous context due to the presence of small communities living along the river. The project aims to bring local people to live in an area that has completely lost its identity, despite the presence and historical value of the ancient city walls, which run along the river. Through the addiction of new collective functions poeple can appropriate again of their identity and traditions. The main elements of the projects are the restoration and enhancement of the walls and the design of different spaces along the riverside. The project is divided into three main areas: a culture park, a shopping area and the new station.

ETHEREA YACademy | High-level Training Course | Architecture for Landscape | course 2020-2021 Team: A. Aguilera, E. Amidei, M. Serra, O. Perrett, A. Rivera Tchernikov

The project’s aim is to redevelop the area of the old Castle of Vibrac, in France. The main partner is the local association “Dartagnans”, which invests in the restoration of abandoned castles in order to promote the territory. The architectural proposal connect the existing and new community to improve the local economy. Vibrac is a village of a few thousand inhabitants. The project area is located in three island along Charente, a river characterized by biodiversity and a changing landscape. In fact it has frequent floods due to the nature of the soil. The project responds to the problem with the introduction of elevated paths and architectures that can also be used in a flooded situation. The moment of the flood become an extraordinary moment, which enhances the fragility and beauty of the surrounding landscape. The architectural language is about light and transparency, as an ethereal architecture that lets people connect with the changing nature of the site.

MEMORIAS DE CEUTA The transformation of Ceuta’s old “Almacén de Abastos” into an archive and military museum | January 2020 Team: Muñoz Miranda Architects; A. Muñoz Miranda; E. Amidei, J. C. Dias Montes, L. Fabbri, A. Karimli, G. Roma

The basic aim of the project is to transform the old warehouse named “Almacén de Abastos” into an archive and also a military museum for Ceuta, a town that has an important military history. The building has two floors with separate entrances. The project maintains this original partition: the museum is on the ground floor, while the archives are on the second floor. The main entrance is located in the courtyard next to the building. From here the visitor can walk directly into the museum, which is conceived as a single open space entirely dedicated to the history of this military town. The archives can be accessed from the courtyard where a metallic staircase combined with a lift leads to the first floor. A new roof with a skylight provides the archives with better lighting. The building is also enhanced by a wooden mezzanine, which creates a separate space for the reader, visitor or worker.

REDITUS Urban renewal of Guadix’s Alcazaba | May 2020 IV Concurso de Arquitectura Richard H. Driehaus | Guadix, Granada Team: Muñoz Miranda Architects; A. Muñoz Miranda; E. Amidei, J. C. Dias Montes, L. Fabbri, A. Karimli, G. Roma

This project aims to revitalize the old town surrounding the Alcazaba by unifying all the different areas with the same style of paving. Access to the Alcazaba is improved by a new structure which functions as an infopoint, made mainly of wood with a light metallic frame. The nearby Palacio de los Saavedra, the old seminary, has become a hotel, and its church a polyfunctional area. In order not to alter the original layout of the Palace, the rooms have been provided with box-like structures containing the bathrooms, the beds (and, in some cases, the wardrobes), as well as the plumbing and electric systems. The same care has been applied to the patios, which have been restored to their original condition. Another aim of the project is to regenerate part of the residential area of the city centre: the solution proposed by this project is to restore the traditional houses of the neighbourhood, with the addition of ateliers and housing for craftworkers.

CENTRI MINORI - NUOVI TERRITORI, TRAPPOLA Concorso di idee per la riqualificazione del borgo Trappola | Ordine degli Architetti di Arezzo | February 2021 | FIRST PRIZE Team: Filippo Amidei; F. Amidei, E. Amidei, P. Brandini

The project’s area is located in the small village of Trappola, in Loro Ciuffenna’s municipality, Arezzo’s province. It’s a traditional village with the height of 1000 MASL in Pratomagno’s mountain. The community has always had a very strong sense of identity and protection towards the territory and traditions. For this reason the proposal wants to involve the citiziens in a partecipatory design from the beginning of the process. As main aspect the project provides a new infrastructure network, which highlight the existing paths and point of interest - historical, architectural and naturalistic ones - in the sourrounding context. Then it focuses on the restoration of “Casa del Guardia”’s complex in the village, according to the guidelines identified by the “Union of Municipalities of Pratomagno”. The complex becomes a museum and educational centre, with a botanical garden, playgrounds, exhibition areas, polyfunctional rooms and a small refuge.
