B

rother Lloyd Mason was a very active member of the COGOP in Hitchin, Hertfordshire, during the late 60’s through to the early 80’s when he migrated to Birmingham in the West midlands in 1981. Brother Mason was a guitar base player at church and would also play as a part of the youth singing group called the “Soul Hunters”. He was very supportive of our group and we would travel to various places singing to the glory of God. He was a Sunday School Teacher and for many years the Youth Leader of the Victory Leaders Band (VLB). He was a much loved and respected leader. As young members of the church we were often called by the Pastor for a meeting at his house where we would be disciplined. Bro Mason our Youth Leader would turn up to these meetings to advocate on our behalf and would defend us to the very end. We nicknamed these gatherings at the Pastor’s house as the “Mercy Room”. Brother Mason was later appointed Evangelist and took his office very seriously, he engaged in activities of his evangelist role, preaching, teaching, and supporting the Pastor. One year we were permitted by the HMP Bedford Prison, Bedfordshire, to conduct a Service there, Brother Mason played his guitar with his fellow musicians and after had to preach a message to the inmates for 6 minutes only, this was quite an achievement at that time. Brother Mason saw the positive in everyone and was very good at

8

looking at each side of an argument. Brother Mason was affectionately nicknamed “Professor Kelly” because he would always have an answer to whatever question he was asked and with a big smile on his face. When Brother Mason walks into a room he lights it up with his broad smile and infectious laugh. When running late for a planned meeting he would just walk in the room with a beaming smile, and everyone just had to smile too. Brother Mason was a loving and caring man who was much loved by everyone in his community. When called upon he was always there ready to lend a helping hand. He was a handy man and was known as “a man of all trades”. He was very laid back about life, and was a happy golucky -man. Brother Mason your love, your care and kindness towards your fellow man and especially your smile and laughter is a legacy that will live on in our hearts. Rest in Eternal Peace. hese are some of the first words that describe Densel Lloyd Mason, without much thoughts Mr smiley, pleasant, kind hearted, industrious and hard working. I was privileged to live in his home for a short time, in the late seventies, along with his wife Barbara and their young children in Hertfordshire, UK. Bro. Mason was a very dedicated, caring man and along with Barbara hey would work very hard to make sure their family was well cared for. He was self-employed in building work and construction. I remember so clearly assisting him in preparing and typing up some of his invoices for him to forward them to his clients. He would also employ some of the men from his home town.

hen Miss Nel had Lloyd he was such a pretty boy. I used to take W him everywhere, he come in like my

handbag. Lloyd and I went to the river one day. He and Jean were born up the house so I picked up the clothes for him and Jean and I said to him lets go to the river so we went to the river and when we went to the river, I put the clothes to soak so I could wash them. Lloyd saw a boy and went off to play with him until he was out of sight. I kept calling him Lloyd, Lloyd, Lloyd. He thought it was so joyous to play in the river but that wasn’t the purpose for him going. He was supposed to stay in sight. I had to give him a flogging as that was not right! As the years went on Lloyd would always keep in touch with me as his aunt. Lloyd got married and had a daughter called Angela and everyone thought she was my child as she came to live with Larry and I and she went to church with me. Larry and I are so sad to see Lloyd go but we know we all have to go sooner rather than later. Goodbye Lloyd, we will miss you. Aunt Lucille & Uncle Larry

want to say RIP Mr Mason. I never thought this time would come so soon I wasn't even prepared. We spent some good times building or taking things apart, there was always something for you to call me to assist you with, from problems with mobile phones, the TV, the computer, missing remotes something to buy or something to sell. So many tools but sometimes not one working! “Dave where are you? What time you coming?” I didn’t even know I was supposed to be there! but Mr Mason we had adventures and we had disagreements but to know you is to know, you do things your way. It might last for years or break down in a couple of days. Give him screws, sticks, nails, electric tools and his mobile phone he will build you anything RIP MR MASON sorry I didn’t get to build or mash up something with you in these last few years. ear Angela, Gillian and Gayle. Please accept our deepest condolences on the D passing of your Father, Evangelist Mason. I have experienced special memories in your household that will last a lifetime. Your parents were strong pillars of the community in Handsworth and further a field. I reflect on the conversations encouragement, fun and laughter gleaned around the kitchen table, not forgetting the culinary skills of your late Mother - Barbara Mason. Bro Mason, was a public figure head in the building and construction trade. He demonstrated excellent work using his skills and knowledge to help other’s and also to provide for his household. That smile ... A permanent fixture come rain or shine. When he laughed, you felt the essence of joy and comfort exhibited from his presence. It changed the atmosphere and environment immediately. You all carry a piece of your parents legacy, Creativity Entrepreneurship, Cooking and much more. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all,as you navigate through this difficult and sad season of your lives. Lots of love. Janet, Corinne and Eden.

a grin on his face I (John), knew Mr Mason through the building trade as I used to do some work along side him, he was a very hard worker, never a lazy man, when there was a job to be done he would do it. Although I was much younger, he was not a man who was too proud to ask my advice on certain building plans because he knew I had the expertise in this area, this demonstrates humbleness and humility.

My wife came to know Mr Mason when Mrs Mason became a registered child-minder and looked after our two children. She remembers him as quietly spoken, polite and friendly. When she sometimes arrived to pick them up, Mr Mason would be sat in the chair he would just look up smile and say “every body alright” I asked my daughter what she remembered most about Mr Mason, she said he was always quietly spoken but gave the biggest burps after eating food that she had ever heard and then hat can I say about this would smile. Joshua said what he wonderful man of GOD. HONOURING OUR DAD Tributes From Densel’s Daughters

T

oday, I pay my deepest respect and honour to my dad for living an extraordinary and remarkable life. A man of boundless entrepreneurial spirit, steadfast leadership, and unwavering commitment to God, his wife of 67 years and his four children and four grandchildren. My dad was a distinguished gentleman, he was so handsome, intelligent, kind, humble and for those who knew him well, full of style, flair, and swagger! Oh yes, dad knew how to dress well and always looked dapper. Dad was a beacon of goodness which represented his passion for others especially those who were less fortunate or marginalised. From the moment my eyes saw my dad on the day I was born until now, I have no doubt in my mind of his love and affection for me as his first child. I stand here proud of all the many accomplishments

18

dad achieved and his successes throughout his time here on earth. I can stand here and declare, dad transitioned from this life to the next empty by giving all that he had to the help and support the school children and the elderly in Jamaica, namely Pike, Devon, Mile Gully, St Pauls, and Comfort Hall through the Williamson of Pike Foundation which he founded along with the Williamson family members in 2018. As I further reflect on the last 55 years of my time spent with dad, I smile inside because of the cherished memories we shared together not only as father and daughter but also as the head of our small family unit. There are so many cherished memories from my childhood journey into adulthood and I am grateful God

saw it fit to Bless us with such an amazing dad. Dad loved his family and always provided for us; we lacked nothing; he provided the best of everything for us. Dad ensured we attended the best schools and received the best education as this was particularly important to him as he remembered the challenges he encountered as a young boy growing up in Jamaica. I remember when Juanita and I transitioned from primary school to secondary school, instead of attending a school which we could walk to from home, we had to catch a school bus from Hitchen to Stevenage to attend our secondary school. Everything we done was different, dad was not one to follow the crowd or the norm. Dad encouraged me to study Business Administration as he had big plans for me, dad knew he would require a secretary to produce his quotations and invoices for his customers and he saw this as the ideal role for me. Sure enough, I started typing dad’s quotations and invoices and many times we would clash as he would make me retype them again when he spotted a mistake. On one occasion dad made me retype an invoice six times until it finally met his approval, I questioned him why I had to re do the invoice so many times and he replied “errors will cost you money” well believe me to this day I check and recheck and recheck again whatever I am doing as this was a valuable lesson I have never forgotten, and it will remain with me forever. Dad believed in me, and he saw something within me that I did not see within myself, the gift of administration and later he promoted me to filing his paperwork, this was a cause for celebration as

dad trusted me to do his filing. Dad ensured all his paperwork was filed in a particular way and I knew I could not deviate from this to devise my own system as he knew exactly how he wanted the filing to be done. For many years I continued to provide dad with administrative support and would often leave my main job and head straight to dads to start another shift sorting out the host of paperwork on the dining room table that was waiting for me. Driving with you in the car was always an experience not exciting at all, most of the time I was terrified as I drove in the front passenger seat and trying to press the invisible breaks as large cain trucks tried to intimidate you to pull over or give way. I remember on our way to Mandeville from St Pauls looking over the side of road and only seeing the long prese pit and pure bush, at this point I am thinking, Lord

please allow us to arrive safely. Dad’s driving in Jamaica was totally different from the U.K. dad knew where every pot hole was and mastered them with precision. As for the corners, everyone knew we were coming as dad pressed the car horn relentlessly until we had turned the bend and was on the straight road. Dad I am going to miss our Sunday WhatsApp conference calls with Juanita, Gayle and I and the times when you would call me at work whilst I was in a Board Meeting and I would send you a message saying, “I will call you back.” As soon as I called you back, you would answer the phone by saying “Angela, what is new?” to which I would reply “nothing dad, everything remains the same.” I will always remember when you shared your vision with me regarding the start of the Williamson Foundation and how you wanted to see all the Williamson Family come together in unity to serve the community in order to leave a legacy for the grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren. You were proud of your grandfather; JJ Williamson and I guess dad inherited his 20

entrepreneurial roots from him. After meeting with Aunt Lucille, Uncle Titus, cousins Gregory, Winston, Tim, and Paul, you were so passionate and driven as you spoke about the Hope for the Foundation. Dad, you preserved and in 2019 the Williamson of Pike Foundation was launched. I am so proud of you dad and for all the school children and the elderly who have benefited from the Williamson of Pike Foundation. The thank you letters received from all the school children is a testament to the incredible legacy you have left behind. I end my tribute with the scripture taken from Revelation 14:13 (NKJV) Then I heard a voice from heaven saying [a]to me, “Write: ‘Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.’” “Yes,” says the Spirit, “that they may rest from their labours, and their works follow them.” Sleep in eternal peace dad, you are safe now, your beloved daughter, Angela Mason

surreal almost unbelievable my Dad is no longer with Ius.tthatseems However, I am comforted by

I thank you for my first car, a Ford Fiesta, that you brought me from the auction in 1990. The car doors couldn’t lock, and the windows fell down inside the door when trying to wind them down! Having said that, the car was reliable and gave me confidence on the road until I was able to purchase my own car a few years later. I thank you for taking us to Jamaica from an early age to experience life and expose us to a different culture which brought us out of our comfort zone.

the fact that he is now resting with the Lord which is far better. Many close friends and family have already written and spoken about the impact that my Dad has had on their lives. me how to export the vehicles to Jamaica. In 2022 when you came back to England after the COVID 19 pandemic you mentioned it would be your final visit to the UK. My intuition told me that you really weren’t going to return. Being with you in June and August this year, I felt guilty leaving you in Jamaica knowing that your health was deteriorating, but you kept saying that you weren’t well enough to travel. I can only hope that in everything you have taught me I have made you proud of the person I am today. Rest in Peace Dad until we meet again. Juanita Mason

I thank you for showing me the tricks of your trade as a plumber and how to unblock toilets in Jamaica with washing up liquid and a mop! My dad had no sense of time! Nevaeh and Marquez and I were due to catch a flight back to England after a 4 week visit to Jamaica. My Dad left Manchester 2 hours late which meant by the time we got to the airport we missed the flight. From that experience I have always been punctual. I will always remember dedicating my days off from work to taking you to your various appointments, including the scrap yard where you would introduce me to suppliers of trucks. To take the pressure off I introduced you to Ebay so you could view the trucks before we went to see them. Following that you taught 22

I am still in disbelief that this is happening to us again so soon. What can I say about my Dad? He was my hero plain and simple. I have always been a daddy’s girl and everyone in the family knew it. Growing up everyone used to say that I looked like my Dad and to me that was an honour. As I have grown up into adulthood, I know I have started to favour mommy and that’s okay too! Some of my earliest memories of Daddy are watching him and my late brother Mark fixing cars at the back of the house at Westminster Road. Just being in awe of them when they finally got the engine to start, and we would drive the car round the block. I remember being on church trips and the coach always seemed to break down on the motorway and Daddy and others would be out there fixing it on the side of the road – I don’t recall there being AA or RAC in those days. I remember Daddy building a bed from scratch one year when we went to Jamaica. I came down in

the morning to all this wood in the living room. We went out for the day and when I came back there was a whole new bed frame in the bedroom. I was so proud of him. Mommy and Daddy were all about education. They hired tutors, and even sent me to school in Jamaica one year when I was supposed to be on holiday! Daddy loved to write, doodle and draw - no paper, envelope or exercise book was safe if it was left on the table. One thing though his handwriting was atrocious! I always used to tell him that he should have been a doctor because it looked like hieroglyphics! One Boxing Day Daddy took me to Merry Hill Shopping Centre just for the drive, I must have been about 10 years old. We went to WH Smith and he bought me my first Parker pen set and some reading books. I think that is when my love of stationary started.

My fondest memories will always be the long car drives, just me and him. Whether it was going on missions to various places to find diggers or trucks for Jamaica or taking him to his friends or family funerals. On one journey to a funeral, I remember Daddy talked the whole way explaining how it was when he first came to England and lived in Ipswich right up to moving to Birmingham when I was one year old. How I wish now that I had the opportunity to tape that conversation. I remember the first time he drove in my electric car he just couldn’t believe how quiet it was! But coming back on the motorway he kept asking every 30 minutes are you sure we going to make it back to Birmingham thinking we were going to run out of charge! Reading some of the tributes that have poured in many people have spoken about Daddy being their defender! That made me remember when I was 18 and went on my first solo holiday to my Uncle and Aunts in America. This was years after the

rules had changed in church with regards to wearing jewellery and me being farse decided to pierce my ears before I came back to England! Well it was the first thing my Mom saw when I got back in the house and she went in. “Tek dem out! Tek dem out! Yuh can’t guh a church Sunday wid dem ting inna yuh ears!” I appreciate it must have been a shock and probably would have come across as rebellious back then but my Dad as always just came into the dining room and said “Leave di chile alone” and that was that nothing more was said. Daddy, thank you for everything you have instilled in me, for the prayers you prayed for me, for baptising me at the age of 9. Please know that your labour was not in vain. Sleep on and rest easy with Mark, Mommy and Gran until we meet again. Before I go I would just like to thank Gillian for all the care and attention that she showed to both Mommy and Daddy as the nurse in the family during their latter years. May God always cause his face to shine upon you. Gayle Mason-Gordon

CONGREGATIONAL HYMN PRECIOUS LORD

Precious Lord, take my hand, Lead me on, let me stand, I am tired, I am weak, I am worn; Through the storm, through the night, Lead me on to the light: Refrain: Take my hand, precious Lord, Lead me home. When my way grows drear, Precious Lord, linger near, When my life is almost gone, Hear my cry, hear my call, Hold my hand lest I fall: Refrain: When the darkness appears And the night draws near, And the day is past and gone, At the river, I stand, Guide my feet, hold my hand: Refrain:

CONGREGATIONAL HYMN FARTHER ALONG

Tempted and tried, we’re oft made to wonder, Why it should be thus all the day long; While there are others living about us, Never molested, though in the wrong. Refrain: Farther along we’ll know more about it, Father along we’ll understand why; Cheer up my brother, live in the sunshine, We’ll understand it all by and by. When death has come and taken our loved ones, It leaves our home so lonely and drear; Then do we wonder why others prosper, Living so wicked year after year. Refrain: Tempted and tried, how often we question, Why we must suffer year after year, Being accussed by those of our loved ones, E’en though we’ve wlaked in God’s ho;y fear. Refrain: ‘Faithful till death,’ saith our loving Master; Short is our time to labour and wait; Then will our toiling seem to be nothing, When we shall pass the heavenly gate. Refrain: When we see Jesus coming in glory, When He comes from His home in the sky; Then we shall meet him in that bright mansion, We’ll understand it all by and by. Refrain:

It seemed like a dream at the beginning but of course if one does not dream or have a vision nothing will come through. It is with oneness and unity as the motto states that we have reached another milestone. SCRIPTURE READING PSALM 31 v 1-11 KJV

F

ret not thyself because of evildoers, neither be thou envious against the workers of iniquity.

2 For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither as the green herb. 3 Trust in the LORD, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed. 4 Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart. 5 Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass. 6 And he shall bring forth thy righteousness as the light, and thy judgment as the noonday. 7 Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass. 8 Cease from anger, and forsake wrath: fret not thyself in any wise to do evil. 9 For evildoers shall be cut off: but those that wait upon the LORD, they shall inherit the earth. 10 For yet a little while, and the wicked shall not be: yea, thou shalt diligently consider his place, and it shall not be. 11 But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.

THANK YOU Perhaps you sent a lovely card, Or sat quietly in a chair. Perhaps you sent a funeral spray, If so we saw them there; Perhaps you spoke kind words, As any friend would say; Perhaps you were not there at all, Just thought of us that day; Whatever you did to console our hearts, We thank you so much, whatever the part.
