BEA FEITLER
Brief History
Early Years
Bea Feitler was known and admired as an unstoppable creative force, a risk taker and a whirlwind persona. Launching into her career at a young age, Feitler was made the co-art director of the Harper’s Bazaar magazine and merely 10 years later she was the very first art director of Ms., a magazine based around the women’s liberation movement. Full of energy, Feitler thrived on the city that surrounded her and the life that came with it. Aside from graphics and art – music, literature and the ballet all acted as a to her. She was fascinated with these creative outlets, and through new experiences, her interest for illustration evolved into her love for design. Her professional work consisted of layouts, dummies, and per-publication work – i.e. Photographs, rough sketches, and ideation processes. Her personal work consisted of mail art, Photographs, scrapbooks, ephemera, drawings and collages.
Bea Feitler, who was originally born in Rio de Janerio in 1938, moved to the United States where she spent most of working her life. She graduated from the prestigious Parson’s School of Design program in New York City in 1959. Post graduation she moved back to Brazil, where she then studied painting in Rio. Early in her career she started “Estudio G” with the help of Glauco Rodrigues and Serguio Jaguaribe. Estudio G was mainly focused on posters, record albums and book designs. Through this she also collaborated with Brazilian magazines that were recognized for their graphic concepts and advanced designs. This was a time where Feitler was able to experiment, create, thrive and fail.

“In one sense, Feitler was always the original feminist,” Feitler’s feminism promoted the notion of treating everyone equally and encouraging women rather than males who dominated the culture. Those who worked with and for her were inspired rather than governed by her approach and creation. She aimed towards not only succeeding herself but helping other realize their full potential. Many of those who worked for Feitler, later went on to succeeding in there own careers as prominent art directors.
The AGO is one of Canada’s most distinguished art Museums, attracting nearly 1 million visitors annually.
