Slips, trips and falls

Staff, children, parents, visitors may suffer sprains, fractures or bruising if they trip over objects such as toys or slip on wet floors

 Staff tidy areas as they go and complete daily checks  Main corridors are only mopped when setting is closed  Good lighting in all areas  Floor in good condition  Staff wear full sensible shoes  Wet floor warning signs are used 

 Remind staff to keep on top of tidying rooms

Manual Handling

Staff may suffer strains or bruising injuries to their back or elsewhere from handling heavy or bulky object and storing them too high.

 Staff are trained how to lift properly in health and safety training  Light goods stored on high shelves  Trolley available for moving heavy loads  Caretaker requested to perform heavy duties

 Remind staff to contact caretaker for heavy jobs and to use the trolley for moving equipment  Store areas cleared and checked regularly

Violent and threatening behaviour from parents /carers

Staff may  suffer assaults, threats and abuse from parents/carers and centre users 

Staff provide good polite service and are taught to remain calm Always 2 or more staff on at opening and closing times  Good security on doors  Zero tolerance policy  CCTV cameras installed

Contacting Infectious diseases

Staff may suffer diseases picked up from children and families coming into the setting such as sickness and diarrhoea, colds and flu and conjunctivitis. Also pregnant staff may be at risk from childhood diseases such as measles, chicken pox and slapped cheek syndrome

Next Review Date: June 2013

 Children and staff are sent home at the first sign of an infectious disease  Exclusion periods appropriate for different diseases  Protective clothing provided such as aprons and gloves  Good hygiene promoted throughout the setting  Antibacterial hand rub provided  Information notices put up for other setting users  Regular cleaning of areas and resources
