He is a chef in a restaurant nearby and enjoys growing his own vegetables and products to experiment in the kitchen. She is a full time mum, taking care of their 4 children aged 6 to 12. She has a passion for cottage gardens, Gertrude Jekyll style, but would prefer a more modern planting integrating ornamental grasses and shrubs. Fragrance should also be well thought, especially around the house. The couple is refurbishing the swimming pool area and asked me to bring to sun within the planting. Their only concern is to have enough space for the children to enjoy and run around, some kind of wildness including some high grasses and fruit trees. Also, if they could wander around the garden, following a path or a loop, the grandparents would really appreciate it when they come to visit. G They do not like the main entrance’s wall and feel some planting should soften the overall look of the house. H On this side of the house, not a lot of sun, and a persistant humidity. I is a mess today and will need a good cleaning and pruining.

Jane and Erich bought the house to enjoy a quieter place after a decade in London. They are currently refurbishing the house and want to modernise and tidy this old garden before moving in. My understanding is that they love the character of the house and its strong architecture. They very much want a garden to reflect it, that would mix modern planting, romance and a bit of boldness.

The garden is situated in Kent, near Canterbury and encloses a Tudor House from the early 18th Century. It is a great challenge to design a garden that will mix modernity and traditional planting to match the strong character of the house. A The North boundary is composed of big old trees like Aesculus, Quercus, Populus and Acer that create a native edge to the fields beyond. B The South border of the garden is packed with a mix of native shrubs and trees, densely growing together and forming a deep screen visible from the house. C The South West border is open to the neighbour’s garden and doesn’t offer a lot of privacy. D The swimming pool area is enclosed in a part of the garden that seats almost 2m below the house. E From the main terrace in front of the living room, we can see the whole garden at once, which makes it look small and pretty boring considering the space available. It is also here that you can get most of the morning and afternoon sunlight. F Finally, a little patio at the back of the house, near th kitchen, would be the perfetc spot for evening summer gathering.

ANALYSING THE SITE & FIRST INTENTIONS
DESIGN POLICIES - Unify the garden, which is a bit scattered, using a vegetal language as a strong link - Offer multiple gardens within one by creating chambers - Focus on views and paths to offer a walkable loop - Propose an evergreen structure to soften the entry to the house - Propose a fragrant planting palette around the house and near the main seating areas - Design a warm and sunny scheme around the swimming pool - Isolate the swimming pool from the entrance to offer privacy - Design an edible garden that shall offer visual interest as well as taste and fragrance - Create a lawn near the house for the children to enjoy - Incorporate natives and wildlife friendly planting at the back of the garden - Emphasize spring interest by adding loads of bulbs in some well-defined areas of the garden

III: PLANTING PLANS AND DETAILS
a. A GUIDING BORDER THROUGH THE GARDEN To offer a great sens of unity and a clear landscape through the garden, these borders are composed with structural shrubs, statement grasses and long flowering herbaceous. The idea behind it is to join the wanderer in the garden along his way to other areas. As a garden that size made of what I shall call them different chambers, one can quickly get confused and overwhelmed with information when there is too much going one. In that instance, these borders linking the whole are more quiet in colours and the repetition of structural species offer a reassuring rythmn. Strucural shrubs are Kolkwitzia amabilis ‘Pink Cloud’, Spiraea x vanhouttei, Perovskia atriplicifolia ‘Blue Spire’, Rosa sp. TBC, Weigela ‘Pink Poppet’. Miscanthus nepalensis and Eupatorium ‘Galway’ as herbaceous structure to create a background. SPIRAEA X VANHOUTTEI
Then, even though the spine of these borders is always composed with the same mix, some differences distinguish them if they are in a different area of the garden. Please see the specific planting plans for more details.

b. A SEA OF CAMASSIA The Parsonage is situated in a village in the middle of open fields and wild landscapes made of never ending meadows, old trees and hedges full of life. In order to bring a little touch of the Kent landscape into the garden, this big wave shall move in the wind and shine in Spring, thanks to a mix of grasses, bulbs and perennials. Not a real meadow but not a real border neither, the result should be a bit more naturalistic with a touch of control. The structure of the wave is simple and easy to read FRAXINUS ORNUS
The whole wave is dotted with some tall Crataegus monogyna, all in full bloom spring time, as to increase the climax created by the Camassia’s blue flowers. In Autumn, the Fraxinus angustifolia ‘Raywood’, in the background, will be wearing an orange vivide foliage.
CRATAEGUS MONOGYNA
CENOLOLPHIUM DENUDATUM
- Deschampsia cespitosa to bring an evergreen structure and some movement - Briza media to join the Deschampsia at a lower level - Narcissus pseudonarcissus in flower in late winter, just as the Deschampsia is cut back down - Camassia in mass planting to create a blue sea, moving in the wind - Cenolophium denudatum and Chamerion angustifolium ‘Album’ for a white background

b. SEA OF CAMASSIA seasonality 1/25
May_ Climax for the sea of Deschampsia, in full flowers, heads dancing in the wind while creating a beautiful mass effect.
March_ Camssias are just sarting to flower while Narcissus are evrywhere. Deschampsia have been chopped down
August_ Chamerion are in full bloom, dotting the sea of grasses with white spikes. Deschampsia are still dancing in the wind.

c. A ZEST OF SUMMER The swimming pool area is enclosed between high Beech hedges, creating a little summery cocoon to enjoy. No views on the surrounding landscapes and fields gives us an opportunity to create a new atmosphere to this room in the garden. The beds on the slopes shouldn’t be planted too high, so one can keep an eye on the pool. To improve a summer feel, and offer warmth from June up to October, the planting is mainly focusing on a mix of perennials and grasses in warms tones. Oranges, reds, lime yellow are contrasting with a few purple leaves. SEDUM TELEPHIUM ‘YELLOW’
PULSATILLA VULGARIS ‘RUBRA’
ACHILLEA ‘TERRACOTTA’
Dynamism is key as much as movement; - Euphorbia mellifera structures the border with its massive round shape - Tall and thin Digitalis ferrugineum to constrast - Grasses, Achillea and Crocosmia soften the whole and move in the wind - The low perennials planted at the front of the border link and calm the mix, without obstructing the view from the flat area above the pool.
1x Koelreuteria paniculata, 2m clear multistem, to intimise from the house and offer some light dappled shade when one is sitting on the lawn.

Summer flowering Koelreuteria paniculata to offer shade above the lawn, hide the house form the swimming pool and increase the feeling of bubble in the garden. Big spine of red Crocosmia ‘Lucifer’ to move around the border and bring more dynamism to the area for a better summer feel.
Digitalis and Euphorbia mellifera in a shape contest. Contrast is key to create excitement!

d. THE EVENING GARDEN Every evening, the sun lightens this part of the garden. As a perfect spot to gather aroud, the planting must be interesting all year round. The magnificient existing Viburnum flowers in winter and is followed by dark green leaves, with a hint of purple. To match this foliage, the sheme here is mainly a mix of greens and limes to conrtast with some purple dots. As a gravel area, planting should not be too dense, allowing the perennials and grasses to expand freely. - The black stems on the Foeniculum ‘Giant Bronze’ with the puprle Persicaria and the Dierama’s pulcherimum flowers match the Sambucus ‘Black Lace’. They remind us of the Viburnum leaves tint. - The Pittosporum to bring evergreen structure and to contrast in shape with the grasses. - The few yellow flowers to give it all a little colourful kick.

e. THE GARDEN LAB The last area of the garden is dedicated to experiment in the garden, in horticulture and in cooking as well as creating an aesthetic place with a peaceful atmosphere. This garden will evolve, depending on seasons but on envys too. Vegetables can be introduced and cultivated, plants can be removed if useless. As for now, a structure has been planted in the 4 central beds using evergreens like Rosmarinus or Bay, joined by lower Sage or Thyme. The colour scheme is separated between warm and cool tones, emphasizing the visual link to the water feature, situated just under the big existing Chestnut. The whole garden is surronded by wide areas of grassy meadows, framing it and offering peace to a landscape quite busy otherwise. On the Western wall, raspberries and blackberies are trained, facing sun. On the Southern wall, North facing, more shade tolerant fruit trees will be planted like Plum ‘Belle de Louvain’, Apple ‘Early Victoria’ or Cherry Morello. Some terracotta will be eft empty, so one can plant annual plants or experiment.
CLIMAX: VARIABLE AVERAGE HEIGHT: VARIABLE TYPE OF PLANTING: A MIX OF EDIBLE, HERBS, APOTHECARY INTEREST MAINTENANCE: HIGH AS A MIX OF ANNUALS AND PERENIALS, CONSTANT CHANGES, NEW SEEDS TO PLANT, IRRIGATION MAY BE NEEDED
