MODULE 1 : HOW TO DRAW A CROISSANT
THE CROISSANT IMAGES AND SCANS OF THE CROISSANT The photographs taken display each perspective of the croissant. The scans of each section cut were useful for both the hand drawings and the axonometric drawings.

HAND DRAWINGS After scanning and taking photographs of the croissant I was required to draw the plan, section and elevations of the croissant. To do this I used the techniques of shading and hatching in order to show the texture of the croissant. Shaded sections showed more depth and the areas which remained lighter represented the shine on the surface of the croissant. I found that using hard lines helped to represent the flakiness of the croissant. These sketches were useful as it allowed me to develop skills in hand drawing which will be of benefit throughout my course.

160 MM The drawings of each section cut were different to the other areas of the croissant. This is due to the use of a combination of fine liner and pencil to show the depth C B and specify the different air pockets in the croissant. This also helped to create a more detailed and realistic drawing.

MARIO WORLD In my Mario world I wanted to represent my life using the two worlds I was given. In doing this I merged both my country life (home) and my city life (university) into the design. This provided me with a clear story to work with and a design that was unique. I also incorporated the idea of an underground where people can create their own world which doesn’t have to fit in with the world they are living in.

Materials: to complete my drawings I needed to use the materials above, including t-square, set square, fineliners, pencils, eraser, masking taps and cicular/oval stencil.
Drawing of world #1: Inorder to create my first world I needed to project the world to create a 3 dimensional work. This was achieved with the use of a set square and t square.
MARIO WORLD - FINELINER In order to draw my Mario World on Illustrator I initially had to draw it by hand, with the use of a t- square and set square. This ensured I had the correct angles for each straight line. I was then able to overlay my illustrator lines and shapes over the hand drawings.

PAPER LANDSCAPE Using the paper model I wanted to show the transition of the model from a figure with no holes to a figure with holes. This is achieved as there are solid shapes found in the lower part of the terrain, while the higher area of the terrain has the open and unique shape with a large hole. I have also decided to keep the tabs to incorporate the idea of perception, which shows that although it looks like a hole, it may not be one as there are items stopping it. It also shows that the paper and design is not flat but rather adds to the texture of the model.

These images portray my module along with the two which are seen previously. To show my model and the shapes which I produced I needed several photos. It shows the transition from no holes to larger holes. The images above help to show the extended view of my model as well as the opposite side in detail. These images are different from those of my previous model submitted.

Module and Shapes: I have created this panel/model with the idea of going from no holes to large unique holes. The use of three different shapes as seen on the left side, helped me to portray this idea.
Figure 4: Once each box or rows of boxes were made each strip together was glued together in order to make the whole model. This was done with PVA and glue along with bulldog clips to keep each box stable and to make sure they glued correctly. Once this was dry the model was complete.

INVISIBLE CITIES CITIES AND THE DEAD 1: MELANIA In my interpretation of Marco Polo’s story Melania, I found that it represents the cirlce of life, meaning that when people die they are replaced by someone new who takes their place and takes on their role. Due to the story being about the city of death, it is a very dark and depressing place as death is always on their mind and evident around them. When people leave the city, they cannot come back. I interpreted this as a type of escape to a better place. I also focused on the quote which was found in the story which describes Melania (in the future) as a place with “increased obstacles”. In my opinion this is due to an increase in deaths and that new people arrive and take the place of those who have died. The city becomes a more complex and dark place.

CITIES & THE DEAD 1: MELANIA In my project I wanted to depict a very dark and depressing space, with an escape from death and the city when you die. In Perspective one I wanted to show a very spacious area, where death is not very prominent, but it is always there watching over them. The doors found on the left side shows that the people are trapped by death. In the second perspective I wanted to show the transition from life to death. Some people present in Perspective one have passed away and have been replaced by others in Perspective two. I wanted to show that death is now more prominent, and the area is much busier due to the large number of obstacles.

The scene above represents life before death. My story was purely about the city of death and I wanted to portray this in my perspective. The characters are drawn from the story as it talks about the solider, beggar, daughter and father. The scene itself is not a very happy place, this is because death is coming. The area is a very dirty and grungy place as individuals are trapped within the area which means that anything that is in the square finds it difficult to escape, including those who die. The clouds seeping down from the top indicates heaven and a way of escape which becomes more prominent in the next perspective. The closed doors represent the idea of being trapped within the city of death, and once people escape they cannot come back. The open area of clouds reflects the idea of an escape.

This scene represents life after death. In my story it is evident that as people die they are replaced by others, who may not be similar but undertake the same role. My representation of this is achieved by placing similar figures which relate back to Perspective one in order to connect the two scenes. This scene is intentionally dark, as death is a dark experience which cannot be stopped. I have included more features than perspective one as the “obstacles increase�. In my story the city was described as a square. I interpreted this as an area where they are trapped and find it hard to escape. The idea of having the left and right sides of the quad open allowed me to show that there is an opportunity to escape. The hand of god seen at the very top of my perspective also represents this: that people can go to a better place (heaven) instead of being trapped in the square.

INSPIRATION These images show the people who I included in my work. It gives an idea of the time, place and how each person relates to one another, which relates back to the reading

REFLECTION Throughout the semester I found this subject very challenging as it was an area of design that I had never seen or experienced before. Each module focused on specific skills such as using computer software, hand sketches and design modelling. It allowed me to explore different areas of design and the modules gave me the opportunity to develop my own ideas. Lectures were very useful in outlining the focus of each module through the explanation of specific terminology for each project. This included relating concepts to real life examples and applying it in our everyday lives. I also found that this subject taught me many new skills as each module focused on different technical areas. I improved my organizational skills as well as my time management skills. This subject was very demanding and due to personal reasons, I was unable to attend most workshops which made it difficult follow the module and complete all tasks on time. However, I was able to complete all modules in time due to the time management skills I developed. The Mario world was least successful in terms of all my modules. This was because I had never used illustrator before and found it very hard to create a coherent world. To improve this, I would need to relearn the basics of illustrator and take my time to complete the world. For my portfolio I have amended M1, M2 and M3. In M1 I edited the layout and improved my work after tutor feedback. In M2 I removed and replaced the clouds which were incorrect, as pointed out by my tutor. I added a background to follow along with the worlds I was given. In M3 I took new photographs of my module and used photoshop to improve them up.
