The Most Valuable Career Trait for the Future By Bill Ryan, Ryan Career Services Wouldn't it be great if we could just look at a reliable list of the guaranteed jobs of the future and plan our careers accordingly? We could make sure that education and training choices were cost-effective. Lifestyle stability would result from certain employment predictability. Anxiety stemming from career and work-related decision making could be dramatically reduced. Life would be so much easier! Although well researched "the careers of the future" lists occasionally pop up in the media and credit should be given to the U.S. Department of Labor for trying to identify careers with "Bright Outlooks" the sad truth is that no definitive list exists and never will that conclusively points the masses toward precise long-term occupations. The world of work has become too dynamic of a place with far too many unpredictable twist and turns, many of which are yet to come, to expect infallible certitude. Nevertheless,
business
and
employment trends and patterns are emerging all the time, which should be tracked by the astute jobseeker. Even though selecting the direction of your career is not as limited and relatively straightforward as in the past, self-guiding your livelihood need not be an exercise of trying to be grounded within a vortex of random chaos. Although the top three career choices custom made for you will not likely jump off some list there is something which you can do that will benefit you for years to come. Adopt the right attitude for success. And to sum up that attitude in a word adaptability. The more accepting of and prepared for change you are the greater your chances for career success will be. Employees and entrepreneurs today and in the future can and will adapt from what is relevant to what will become relevant. And these changes will happen in very short time. You have to always be on top of changing

You, a Crowded Room...NOW What? By Meridith Powell Ever hit the door of a networking event and just freeze? All those happy smiling people standing there waiting for something brilliant to come out of your mouth and suddenly you are completely thrown off your game. So you do one of three things, you immediately look for someone you know and quickly engage them in conversation, or you stand there like a wallflower at the high school dance with no one to talk to, or worse yet you walk up to strangers introduce yourself and spend the next 15 minutes talking a mile a minute about absolutely nothing. Believe me we have all been there. Yes, networking can be intimidating and at times a little overwhelming. However, I believe no skill produces a better return on investment than networking when it comes to growing your business. It is well worth your time and investment to learn how to make your networking

fun, easy and incredibly productive. Let me let you in on a few little secrets: Networking is a skill that needs to be learned (I don’t believe anyone is a natural networker); Networking is a skill that anyone can learn and be good at; and Networking holds the key to helping you be successful in any economy. So how do you network effectively? How do you network so that it is fun, easy and productive? First, Make A Plan! I want you to sit down and think about networking before you do it. So many of us have no rhyme or reason as to why and how we choose our networking events, how we determine who we need to meet, and what we ultimately hope to achieve. If you want your networking to be effective, then you need to first know why you are networking. What do you want to gain and what are your goals? Do you need new clients,

Depression in the Workplace Costs and Solutions Conference Tuesday, September 20, 2011 • 8:30am–4pm Augusta Civic Center Why do we stress? Each person has their own reasons – personal, financial, work or lack there of, etc. – but why does our body and mind feel the way they do? Dr. Neil Korsen, MD, MS, MaineHealth Family Physician and Medical Director for the Mental Health Integration Program, provides some insight and advice. “Stress affects our bodies through the nervous system, the endocrine system, and the immune system,” said Dr. Korsen. “The mind and body are connected, and physical and mental health are tightly connected, in both directions.” It’s important to maintain healthy habits, Dr. Korsen continued. “Exercising regularly, eating and sleeping well, spending time with people you like, doing things you like, and doing things to relieve the effects of stress, such as meditation and yoga, should all help improve mental wellness. Getting help when you begin to have symptoms that might be due to stress is also important.”
Who should attend? • Employers of all sizes and sectors • HR professionals • Mental health professionals • Public Health professionals • Mental Health/Medical jobseekers Cost $125 per person or $115 per person with two or more attendees from the same organization. Continuing Education Units (CEU) .6 Hours Human Resource Recertification Credit (HRCI) General Credit 4.75 Hours For more information on the conference including registration forms, contact: Thomas Downing, Director MMC Lifeline Workplace Wellness Program T: 207.781.1545 • E: downit@mmc.org Sponsored By: MMC Lifeline Workplace Wellness Program MaineHealth • MMC PIER Program Maine Mental Health Partners The Maine Health Access Foundation
Extended periods of stress can lead to depression, a major public health problem in Maine and across the US that impacts individuals and employers alike, as it’s one of America’s most costly illnesses, according to Mental Health America. To build employer awareness and provide practical strategies and resources to minimize the impact on individuals/families and the organization, Maine Medical Center’s Lifeline Workplace Wellness Program (LWWP) has developed the “Depression in the Workplace: Costs and Solutions Conference.” The one-day event will be held September 20, 8:30am–4pm, at the Augusta Civic Center. “We have been working on the development of an employer-based mental health pilot that we hope to launch in 2012,” said Thomas Downing, Director for the LWWP. “The goal is to plan/implement a suite of resources that will assist employers in building and sustaining mental-health-friendly work environments. The conference evolved out of this work.” The conference, sponsored by Maine Medical Center (MMC), MMC Lifeline Workplace Wellness Program, MaineHealth, Maine Mental Health Partners, MMC PIER Program, MaineGeneral Health Reach EAP, and Employment Times & My Job Wave, will provide attendees with nationally recognized speakers, opportunities to network with employers and other mental health professionals, exposure to a topic that is of critical concern to employers as they struggle with rising health care costs and employee productivity, an understanding of community based resources to support employers and their employees, and more. Debra Lerner, MS, PhD, Senior Scientists, Tufts Medical Center, is the Keynote Speaker. Dr. Lerner will share information on the Work and Health Initiative, a pilot program tested in Maine that demonstrated improved employee work performance and productivity and reduced depression symptoms. “The philosophy of wellness embraces both physical, emotional and psychological components,” said Downing. “We need to think of health in a very holistic way, mind-body connection. A comprehensive wellness program addresses all aspects of health, not just the physical.”

Continued from page 3... technologies whether they be in software, new paint formulas, advanced infection prevention protocols in hospitals, or in mobile device marketing. There is hardly an industry that is not right now undergoing advancements, conversions, transformations, or variations. Knowing how to add value to this type of innovative environment is the task of each productive worker. Remember, if a job can be automated or outsourced, then stay away from it. Look for careers that either have a skill legacy that can be reinvented for a rapidly changing world or look for one that is completely novel and didn't exist a few years ago. Better yet, create a career for the first time. There are lots of jobs now that didn't exist ten years ago. Whoever said in the 1980s that they wanted to be a search engine optimization specialist when they grow up? What need is developing right now that requires creative talent? Adaptable people are more likely to find the answer than those of us who are uncomfortable with a modulating world.

Part of the post-recession landscape is that more is being done with less. This isn't just the result of technological
innovations. It's because of a growing and highly effective and efficient (and possibly overworked) workforce. Tom Friedman in a recent New York Times article pointed out that all of the employees of Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Groupon, and Zynga could easily fit into the 20,000 seat Madison Square Garden and not fill it. Combined these companies are valued at $64 Billion. Let’s look at how these guys are working if we want some role models to follow. Be smart, of course. That has always separated the winners from losers. But to that, add: be adaptable. Complacency and inertia are out. Versatility and reliance are in. As the old nursery rhyme says, Jack be nimble. Jack be quick. Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/6464786 About the Author: Bill Ryan is owner of Ryan Career Services LLC, Concord, NH, www.ryancareerservices.com. better relationships with existing clients, a new job, better job, people to go mountain biking with? It doesn't matter what your purpose is, you just need to know it so you can choose the right events with the right people.
early on, and how we identify ways we can add value and take the relationship to the next level. Remember, networking is not about you. You're there to listen and learn about others.
Networking is most effective when your purpose aligns with your event. Make sure the events you choose to attend put you in direct contact with the type of people who can help you achieve your purpose.
Networking is a beginning not an end. You need to know what your next steps are before you leave an event. Then within 24-hours you need to follow-up on those next steps and take action. Remember your second or even third meeting with a networking contact is NOT a sales call. You're still building the relationship and determining if you can be of service. Focus your second and third calls on adding value.
Second, Make An Impression! Your goal with networking is to make an impression - a positive one. You want people to want to know you and want to talk with you. That all begins with how we look, how we introduce ourselves, and the value of our conversation. It all begins with our personal brand. Professional dress, a smile and great eye contact will make you appear confident and approachable. Your introduction should not only help people understand what you do, but at the same time ensure you standout from your competitors, and your conversation needs to be 80 percent listening and 20 percent asking questions. Asking questions and listening is how we establish trust
