Older adults from all walks of life are returning to the workforce—or joining it for the first time. Many employers value older workers’ knowledge, maturity and work ethic, but finding a job can be difficult, particularly for adults over age 50. Studies show that entering or re-entering the workforce at later ages is more difficult than at younger ages. Older adults, however, have something that younger workers do not have: experience. Even if you have not been steadily employed, you have picked up transferable skills just by living your life. If you are an older adult who has not applied for a job in many years, this guide provides a framework for you to increase your odds of finding employment. KNOWING YOURSELF AND YOUR SKILLS Start by taking an inventory of the skills and experience you have acquired through jobs and activities in your life. Work, parenting, hobbies, part-time and seasonal work, volunteering—all require skills that can be readily applied to the employment you seek. Describe the main duties for each activity and list the skills you used to accomplish them, then think about how these skills could apply to a job that interests you. For example, If you know how to... A. Develop a budget B. Care for children or relatives C. Organize a community event D. Weatherproof your home Your transferable skills might include... A. Basic accounting, office management B. Care giving, customer service C. Organizational skills, event planning D. Conducting energy audits and

other “green servicesâ€? PRESENTING YOURSELF TO EMPLOYERS Potential employers will want to see your skills and experience in writing (in a rĂŠsumĂŠ or job application) and in person (during a job interview). Target your potential employers’ needs in your application, rĂŠsumĂŠ and interview. In Writing Whether you submit a rĂŠsumĂŠ or complete an application, tailor it to the position—when it comes to rĂŠsumĂŠs, one size does not fit all. Use words from the job description, if there is one. It is important to describe your skills in a way to motivate the employer to interview you. Many companies require applications to be submitted online. If your computer skills are weak, find someone to help you fill out and submit your online application. RĂŠsumĂŠ Tips Write a summary of your skills and experience targeted to the requirements of the job. Emphasize experience within the last 10 to 15 years. Keep information brief and to the point. Mention volunteer work, training and certifications only if pertinent to the position. Avoid including personal information. Include your education. If you have a GED, list yourself as a high school graduate. If you have a college degree, it is not necessary to list your high school education. Have someone review your rĂŠsumĂŠ for errors. _____ To request the new brochure, “Employment Options: Tips for the Older Job Seeker,â€? contact the Eldercare Locator at 1-800-6771116 or www.eldercare.gov. Governor Lynch Statement on Drop In Unemployment Rate NH.gov NH Unemployment Rate Dropped from 5.8 percent in July to 5.7 percent in August

CONCORD, NH – Governor John Lynch today issued the following statement regarding the drop in the state's unemployment rate: The continuing drop in the unemployment rate here in New Hampshire is consistent with independent analysis that New Hampshire's economy is the strongest in the region. In fact, a recent report by the Georgetown University Center on Education and Workforce stated New Hampshire will continue to lead the region in job growth over the next several years. “That is why it is so important that we continue to build on the progress we have made, ensuring we have an educated and skilled workforce, and keeping New Hampshire one of the most business-friendly states in the nation. “While New Hampshire is stronger economically than many other states, we recognize that there are many people still looking for work. We will continue our efforts to make smart investments in our economy, to connect businesses looking to hire with people seeking jobs, and getting more of our people back to work.

Don't be discouraged by a failure. It can be a positive experience. Failure is, in a sense, the highway to success, in as much as every discovery of what is false leads us to seek earnestly after what is true, and every fresh experience points out some form of error which we shall afterwards carefully avoid.

Lao Tzu once said, “Fail to honor people, they fail to honor you. But of a good leader, who talks little, when his work is done, his aim fulfilled, they will all say, ‘We did this ourselves.’” But just how do you honor people? A good leader listens to the people who work for him or her. And good leaders take what the people are telling them seriously. If workers come up with good ideas, good leaders use their power to implement the suggestion-and then they give credit to the person whose idea it was. Good leaders take the blame themselves when mistakes are made, but they pass out praise and credit when something is achieved and give the credit to the people who work for them. Follow this small bit of wisdom, and you’ll likely find that you have loyal workers who truly honor you and will probably be willing to go to the ends of the Earth for you, because it’s a sad fact that few leaders understand this important principle.

Staying positive can be hard in today's world, but here's one small way to work a little positivity in your daily routine. Each day, before you sit down to work, grab a small piece of paper and write a nice thought down about someone you work with. Later, when you see that person, work your positive thought into your conversation. It's a small way of making the world just a little nicer, and it just takes a minute to plan and a short time to deliver.
