Ten tips for dressing for the job interview (ARA) – In today's highly competitive job market, it is imperative for candidates to be fully prepared for an interview. This includes choosing the appropriate interview attire. The idea is to project an image to a future employer that conveys a responsible, hard working and motivated worker. And nothing says that more clearly than what you choose to wear during that all-important first impression. Debra Pierce, director for career services for Miami International University of Art & Design and Kate Campbell, director for fashion and retail management at The Art Institute of Tampa, help shed some light on dressing for the interview in the new business environment. • Do your homework. Yes, dressing for the interview requires you to research the employer. If you are applying for a job with a young, trendy boutique, dress in a way that the interviewer can envision you in their shop servicing their clientele. • Stylish is better than funky. Employers want to see that you will fit in with their business. However, be warned - stylish is better than funky. Too much “trend” can scare a potential employer away. Good taste is more valuable than how avante-garde
you can be. This is not the time to experiment. For the guys, the same rules apply. “When you walk through the door, you should be mistaken for the boss,” says Campbell. “Caveat: This is a fine line to walk. If you walk in wearing Prada, and the interviewing manager is in a Brooks Brothers suit, are you sending the right message? Don’t overdress or get label happy. Leave the Gucci and Guess at home; keep it clean, neutral and generic.” • Clean goes a long way. Clean, pressed khakis or dress pants are preferred. Clean, appropriate shoes and accessories are essential (use a tie if it matches the employer’s profile). No T-shirts with political satire, obscene graphics or logos. No droopy jeans or visible underwear. Again, this is not the time to make a personal statement. You should reflect the employer’s values and image. If all else fails, a basic blue or gray suit is always stylish and in good taste.

SHRM ME State Council kicks off Sixth Annual “Best Places to Work in Maine” Program
PORTLAND, Maine – The Maine State Council of the Society for Human Resources Management is looking to honor companies that have established and consistently fostered outstanding workplace environments. The “Best Places to Work in Maine” awards program, now in its sixth year, is endorsed by, Best Companies Group, the Maine State Chamber of Commerce, Employment Times, HR Times and Mainebiz. “The Maine program has grown significantly each year since its inception in 2005,” said Kristine Avery, Director of the SHRM Maine State Council. “I think the success of the Best Places to Work program is a true testament to Maine businesses understanding that they must retain and recruit top talent to be successful.”
In June, Best Companies Group will survey all the Maine companies that have registered online by May 27. The scientifically validated survey will incorporate a company’s employee benefits and policies, and responses from a comprehensive employee engagement and satisfaction survey. The data collected from the assessment will be used to determine the Best Places to Work in Maine. “Businesses are the backbone of the Maine economy,” said Governor Paul LePage. “The ‘Best Places to Work’ project gives employers the opportunity to highlight the best of the best. There are many great companies, big and small, in our state and I encourage people to take part in this program.” First place winners of the fifth annual

and satisfaction data, the Maine benchmark report, and the transcript of employee written comments. Many companies use the report to make significant improvements in their workplace culture.
Mary Hammond, Vice President and Human Resources Officer at Kennebec Savings had this to say about the program: “At Kennebec Savings Bank, employee retention is everything because our employees are everything. We feel strongly that if we treat them well, not only will they treat us well, they will treat our customers and each other well, too. Participating in the ‘Best Places to Work in Maine’ has been a great ‘pulse check’ on that point. The valuable information in the reports helps us to affirm what we are doing right to keep our employees happy and where we have opportunities for growth.”
Any company with at least 15 employees in the state of Maine is encouraged to participate. Companies selected as a “Best Place to Work in Maine” will be announced at a gala event in the fall of 2011. A complete list of top companies will be featured in a statewide publication put out by Mainebiz.
The Best Companies Group employee feedback report is presented to each participating company, whether or not they made the list. The report includes the summarized employee engagement
There is a fee to participate in the Best Places to Work in Maine program that helps cover administrative costs and the production of the employee feedback report. Interested companies can apply to participate in the program online at www.bestplacestoworkme.com. The deadline for registration is May 27, and all registered companies will be surveyed simultaneously following the deadline date.

• Color is important Dressing for the interview also requires that you choose colors carefully. “Color as part of your interview strategy is extremely important since it is a useful tool in conveying a powerful message—that said, make sure you're sending the right message,” says Pierce. Blue, especially navy, is a go-to color because it conveys an image of someone in control but it also conjures up calm, stability, trust, truth, confidence and security. Gray is the second most popular color for an interview after blue. It has similar traits to blue, but also denotes sophistication.

While black commands authority, it also implies drama and can make you appear unapproachable, so use it sparingly— perhaps as an accent color. Green indicates nature, success, wealth and security. It is a calming color and is very relaxing. Dark green is masculine, conservative and implies wealth. Stay away from reds, oranges and yellows. Red is a powerful color and is associated with energy, passion, desire, power and aggression. Orange is similar to red in that it can stimulate strong emotions. Yellow promotes a wide range of emotions including cheer, goodwill, caution and even jealousy. For these reasons, any of these colors should be used as an accent color only. White shirts and blouses are conventional and convey cleanliness, goodness and precision. Purple and pinks are both feminine colors and should be worn with discretion, especially in fields with a strong gender bias.

Q&A: How government measures, reports jobs data By Kevin G. Hall, McClatchy Newspapers WASHINGTON – Few economic reports carry more weight these days than the monthly report about jobs from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Here’s a look at how these important gauges of employment in the economy actually are compiled. QUESTION: What does the monthly BLS report measure? ANSWER: When the Employment Situation Summary comes out on the first Friday of every month, it actually contains data from two different surveys—the Current Employment Statistics survey, from which estimates are made about non-farm employment; and a household survey, known as the Current Population Survey, from which the unemployment rate is calculated. Q: How do they differ? A: The employment-situation survey
samples about 160,000 businesses and government agencies, representing about 410,000 work sites. This survey gauges non-farm payroll employment during the week that includes the 12th day of any given month. When compared with the prior month, estimates of job losses or gains are derived. The population survey involves about 2,200 Census Bureau specialists fanning out to interview people in the household survey, which involves roughly 60,000 participating households who together make a representative sample of the U.S. population. These participants are asked questions about work activity and job search during the reference week. From this, the jobless rate and a host of specific employment information are compiled.
Q: Which measure is more accurate? A: Because the employment-situation survey is so large, it has a smaller margin of error when looking at employment changes over the month. Considering that public opinion polls sample 1,000 or 2,000 individuals to get a random sample, the BLS data on each survey is far more exhaustive than the political and media polling that forms public opinions. Q: Is participation in the survey mandatory? A: For the population survey, on which the unemployment rate is calculated, no. For the employment-situation survey, it’s voluntary in all but three states— North Carolina, Washington and Oregon. In South Carolina, it’s mandatory for companies with 20 or more employees. California
recently stopped making participation mandatory. Q: How is information collected from employers? A: As recently as two decades ago, almost all of it came by mail. Now much of it comes through electronic-data interchange, with businesses automatically sending an electronic file from their payroll system. About 23 percent of information comes via Internet filing and another 17 percent arrives from a computer-assisted telephone interview involving a real person calling the company. Q: Isn’t the unemployment rate derived from unemployment insurance? A: No. “There is a persistent misconception about that,” said Jim Borbely, an economist in BLS’s Division of Labor Force Statistics.

DATA.... Unemployment benefits don’t factor into the monthly calculation of the unemployment rate. A separate agency in the Department of Labor reports unemployment insurance claims data, but the claims data don’t take into account all of the people who are unemployed. These claims are paid by states, and since benefits eventually run out, those who are still unemployed after benefits run out wouldn’t be counted if unemployment checks were the only gauge of joblessness. Q: Once the data is collected, what happens to it? A: The BLS offices, located near the U.S. Capitol, go into a lockdown mode during the final week of the month ahead of the release of jobs report the first Friday of every month. Access is restricted as experts crunch the numbers that have come in from establishments and households across the nation.
Advisers gets the information Thursday afternoon. The secretaries of labor and commerce get the information half an hour ahead of the release Friday. Everyone who gets an early peek at the numbers is prohibited from discussing it until one hour after the release. Q: Do the surveys get updated? A: From time to time, what’s included in the monthly summary gets updated. One example begins this month, when the population survey will begin collecting more detail about the duration of unemployment, or how long people remain jobless. To date, the duration has been capped at 99 weeks or more. Now it will be capped at five years or more. Q: Why does that matter?
Q: Who gets to see this data first, and when?
A: This additional detail should provide greater information about those unemployed for extremely long periods of time. It will provide a better estimate of the average duration of unemployment.
A: There are numerous ways someone could benefit from early release of this information, so there are tough rules on who gets to know what and when.
“Our measure of average duration may increase as a result of this change,” said Karen Kosanovich, a labor economist in the Division of Labor Force Statistics.
The Wednesday before each month’s release, the Federal Reserve gets information about industrial employment and hours worked in the mining, manufacturing and utilities. The White House Council of Economic
