Take advantage of the holidays to boost your job search

By Deborah Walsh, MS, L PC–C, NCC

The cold has arrived and the winter solstice is here with the shortest days of the year. It is easy to feel down and defeated when you have been working so hard to find a job and are having limited results. It seems that so much of the financial news is bad, optimism is in short supply. The temptation may be to just hunker down and sit out the winter, wait for spring. But now just may be the best time to take action. Employers are looking forward Companies across many industries are beginning to look forward to the coming year. Like you, they have experienced the hard times of 2011. Many have taken a

conservative wait and see approach before investing in their businesses. Now they are looking to creative ways to turn around sales performance, improve production, and reach new markets. This is the time when companies are typically looking to implement that new strategic plan, and new plans oftentimes mean new blood, and that means new hires. Do you have the skills and experience they need? You’ll never know if you are not in the game. Get ahead of the crowd Take advantage of many others dropping out of the employment market over the holidays and get

ahead of the crowd. You can still enjoy the holidays if you plan a few hours of “work time each day.

• First, review your current activities and broaden your search. Beef up those activity and contact lists! Whether you are using job boards, professional organization and industry sites, or looking at specific organizations, review your keywords. What other words are related to your field? Make a list. You can use it for searches and updating your resume.

• When looking online, add new search engines. Continued on page 2

What other sources are available for your field? Are there other professional organizations that may have job listings, or just as important, colleagues to network with? Many of these offer free subscriptions so you can automatically receive notices of listings that match your requirements. For those that do not, add them to your “check-in” list and visit them frequently.

• There are also many sources of printed information. Use as professional journals, daily newspapers, weekly newspapers, and help-wanted publications such as Employment Times.

• Be timely in responding to any new listings. Gone are the days when listings were held open for a month or more; a week is more the norm in many job sectors. Again, all the more reason to stay in the game over the holidays. Broaden your horizon Envision a New Year for yourself. What does your professional future look like? Now is a great time to look more broadly and identify new opportunities. For example:

• Consider a previous position in a new industry. Or another job in the same industry to capitalize on your experiences.

• Look at both the private and public sectors. USAJobs.gov is the official source for many federal employment listings.

• Consider volunteering in a field that you would like to move into professionally. • Work with a career counselor to take a fresh look and identify new Dec. 26, 2011 – Jan. 8, 2012

Train in weeks or months, not years.

Check your local CareerCenter for free services or the National Career Development Association at NCDA.org to identify a professional counselor.

• Career planning groups/ workshops These are a cost effective way to gather a lot of information, unlock hidden skills, and develop your career plan. Visit your accountant Did you know that many career and job search expenses are tax deductible? Costs such as resume writing and printing, postage, travel, and professional career counseling services may be deductible on your taxes. Keep good records and consult with your accountant or the IRS for specific information. Take the time to update your image Now that you have envisioned your professional future it is time to take a fresh look at your professional image. Does your resume accurately convey that image to potential employers? If you are just starting to write your resume, creating a good “skeleton resume” with all of your experience can be a great tool. You won’t send this extensive version to anyone, but you can draw from it to pick and choose, and customize, what is important for the resume you will create for an individual application. Look at your resume and ask yourself: • What does this resume tell an employer about me? Does it match my new vision of my professional future? • Have I updated my keywords and used action verbs to describe my

experience? • Am I clearly communicating my skills in such a way that an employer can see how they are directly transferable to the position I am applying for? Once you have updated your resume, take the opportunity to review your online/social presence. Employers often search for the online presence of candidates. They may Google a name, check Facebook and Linkedin, or conduct other searches. You can do this yourself to be sure you are projecting the image you want to make with prospective employers. Take advantage of holiday gatherings to network The holidays also present an opportunity to network. You will likely be spending time with former colleagues and family members. Put on a happy face. When asked how it is going, highlight the positives. We all want to help someone who is positive and upbeat. You can follow that with your perfected elevator speech, telling them in just a minute or two the value you bring, and how they may be able to help you in your search. Don’t be afraid to ask

directly for contacts, introductions, and references if appropriate. Of course you will be sure to follow through in a timely manner. Reconnect with your support network After the rush is over, to keep the momentum going and avoid the post-holiday funk, reconnect with your support networks, or even add another by visiting a Career Center group, an industry organization, or reaching out to other professionals. A well run group is positive, productive, and constructive. Going to a meeting also gives some sense of professionalism and purpose. You may generate leads, receive suggestions for new sources of information, or provide support to a fellow searcher. There is no denying that looking for work is itself hard work, but you can look forward to the New Year knowing that you are doing everything you can to maintain good energy, project a positive image, follow every lead possible, and create a bright future for yourself. Best wishes for a prosperous New Year!

EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER

Central Maine Eye Care, P.A.

Once you know what you want to pursue – a job or a career – you need to figure out how to achieve your end goal. Consider the following questions: - What is your work experience? If there is a particular industry in which you worked previously, it will be easier to move from one job to another in that same industry. For example, if you worked in a restaurant, you are more likely to change positions within the food-service industry. A career change – for example from finance to social services – might require some additional education and training. - What is your education? Even if your first job did not match your educational background, your education and training can help you move to a new position. For example, maybe you received training in business applications and office procedures, but your first job was filling orders in a warehouse. The skills you gained on the job, and the

education you have, might suit you for a position with an order fulfillment company, where you may encounter long-term career options. - Do you have the skills to switch from one industry to another? If you want to switch from one career to another, you can. Just remember that you need to leverage the skills you gained to meet the needs of a new career. Create a list of your strengths and skills acquired in your previous positions and make notes on how they would relate to a new career. If many of your skills are non-transferable – perhaps because they were specialized or you worked in a small environment that did not keep up with changing technology – consider returning to school for some training. Regardless of whether you can afford to quit working to go back to school, first consider taking a night class or two at the local community college and explore your options.

Training Unemployed Workers for Jobs in Manufacturing, Maine MEP Graduates First M.O.S.T.® Welding Class Governor’s Pilot Program Helps Lewiston Employer Meet Workforce Needs Lewiston, Maine – A new model for delivering job training to unemployed workers Dec. 22 graduated its first class of trainees. Nine previously unemployed workers completed the first phase of the Maine Manufacturing Extension Partnership’s (Maine MEP) Mobile Outreach Skills Training (M.O.S.T.®) program and will receive offers of employment from WahlcoMetroflex, a leading engineering and manufacturing firm based in Lewiston.

Bob Libby, left, and Price Gendron, both of Auburn, demonstrate the welding simulator in a mobile classroom at WahlcoMetroflex in Lewiston on Dec. 22. Libby and Price are among 13 welding students graduating from the Maine Manufacturing Extension Partnership program. The program provides customized training for careers in manufacturing offered in high-tech, mobile classrooms and is designed to boost the skills of Maine workers. The inaugural class focused on welding to meet WahlcoMetroflex's needs. All graduates received job offers from the engineering and manufacturing firm.

The M.O.S.T.® program is a rapid response skills training and job placement program that is tailored to specific employment opportunities. It provides customized training in hightech mobile classrooms for Maine manufacturers in exchange for a commitment from an employer to hire trainees who successfully complete the two-week intensive training program. The inaugural class for WahlcoMetroflex focused on welding training to meet the company’s need for additional welders. “The M.O.S.T.® program developed out of a paradox that faces Maine’s manufacturing community. At a time of high unemployment, many Maine manufacturers find their ability to grow limited by the shortage of skilled workers. M.O.S.T.® is designed to address this obstacle by rapidly training unemployed workers for careers in manufacturing,” said Bruce Pulkkinen, chair of the Maine MEP Board of Directors. Funded in part by the Maine Departments of Labor and Economic and Community Development, and the Unity Foundation, the M.O.S.T.® job training initiative received strong support from Governor Paul LePage.

1 Day Shift, 7a–4p • 1 Night Shift, 3p–Midnight

The Governor toured Maine MEP’s mobile training unit when it visited the State House earlier this year and encouraged the organization to launch a pilot program. “The M.O.S.T.® program represents a new model of putting Maine people back to work. It’s training for a job, and ultimately a career, not training for training’s sake. And because the program first identifies the workforce needs of manufacturers, it can rapidly train and place unemployed workers into jobs. It’s a classic win-win-win. Unemployed workers get jobs. Manufacturers get skilled and motivated workers. And the state sees a reduction in unemployment,” said Governor LePage. The program begins by canvassing manufacturers to identify job opportunities. After working with a company to determine what it needs in terms of workers and skill sets, the MEP staff develops a training curriculum based on the employer’s skills requirements. This customization shortens the length of time needed for trainees to become productive employees. The MEP staff then provides the initial HR review, working with Maine CareerCenters to identify a pool of unemployed workers and screening prospective applicants. This HR function is particularly important for small manufacturers that lack specialized HR departments. The company interviews the candidates from a well-qualified pool of applicants and selects the trainees. After a screening and selection process, candidates enter an intensive two-week targeted skills training program aboard a high-tech mobile Continued on page 7

classroom brought to the employer’s place of business. With WahlcoMetroflex, the mobile unit was located at the company’s Lewiston headquarters. Over the next six months, the M.O.S.T.® program team will provide on-the-job training and mentoring to develop the trainees’ skills proficiency and ensure a high job retention rate, which is critical to employers. “We’re very pleased to participate in the inaugural training program in Maine,” said Don Mondor, manufacturing manager for WahlcoMetroflex. “Maine MEP’s customized training rapidly gets trainees up to speed so that they can walk from the classroom onto the shop floor and immediately become productive team members. And the candidate screening that Maine MEP performs ensured we got very qualified job applicants.” The M.O.S.T.® program has proved to be a success in states where it has been implemented, with a training completion rate of 97 percent, a job placement rate of 95 percent, and a job retention rate after six months of 91 percent. These results far exceed the placement and retention rates of

traditional job training programs at only a fraction of the cost per job. “The fastest way to reduce unemployment is to train unemployed workers for existing job vacancies. But to do so requires flexibility and customization. For many of Maine’s high tech manufacturers, a cookie-cutter approach to training is not efficient. The M.O.S.T.® program is an innovative way of delivering workforce training at a company’s doorstep. It shows that we can spur job growth by giving companies the skilled workers they need.” said Maine Commissioner of Labor Robert J. Winglass. The Maine Labor Commissioner expressed satisfaction that the initial training class included three unemployed veterans. “The Unity Foundation is proud to support the effort to train unemployed Maine veterans for careers in manufacturing. We owe returning members of the armed forces a debt of gratitude for their service to the country. By providing this grant funding, we can help these veterans embark on productive civilian careers in Maine," said Larry Sterrs, chairman and CEO of the Maine-based Unity Foundation. “The holiday season can be a stressful

time for unemployed workers, but the graduates from the M.O.S.T.® program can look to the New Year with optimism, knowing that jobs await them at WahlcoMetroflex,” said Mary LaFontaine, manager of the Lewiston CareerCenter. “We look forward to working with Maine MEP on future training classes.” Maine MEP Board Chair Pulkkinen noted the benefit to graduates of being able to train on the latest, state-of-the-art virtual simulation welding tools. “Maine MEP would like to thank Lincoln Electric, the manufacturer of the virtual reality arc welding simulators that are installed on the M.O.S.T.® mobile training unit. These simulators provide excellent real-time feedback to trainees and enable them to perform far more repetitions that they normally would complete in comparable training programs. Lincoln Electric has been very helpful in training our instructors, so we can put people back to work,” Pulkkinen said.
