Relationships are the new job security If you haven't noticed, the way the world works has changed a lot. Daily life is going to be a lot different for my children than it was for my parents. In times of change, we yearn for security. Unfortunately, the places that we've traditionally found security - career, families, culture - are where most of the changes are happening. One area this is obvious is the lack of traditional job security. From a historical perspective, it was way easier when you knew that someday you would take your parent's job. Millers milled, Porters ported, Smiths smithed (I'm pretty sure I know what my forefathers did for a living...). Even during most of the twentieth century, stable employment was the cultural norm - you worked for the same company until they gave you a gold watch and (hopefully) a pension. These days, long-term stays with the same employer aren't expected—by the employer or the employee. Needless to say, this has caused a lot of stress as we bounce from position to position through periods of "career transition", trying to find a stable paycheck in an unstable world. Even www.MyJobWave.com
if you are highly skilled at your trade, outside variables have a profound impact on your employment. It might not be possible to get rid of that stress, but it is possible to mitigate it. One of the easiest ways of doing this is through building a strong professional network. No matter your industry or profession, the more connections you have, and the stronger your relationships, the more support you will have when you transition from one position to another. In “Free Agent Nation,” Daniel Pink wrote about a trend he saw in which short-term work teams would come together to work on a project and then disband to go onto other projects. Whether or not you are a freelance graphic designer or corporate HR manager, there is much more fluidity in your career path. If you accept that fluidity, and attempt to flow with the currents instead of fighting them, your professional opportunities will increase and your stress hormones will decrease. How do you go with the flow and still pay the bills. If you are
unemployed, your most valuable resource is information: Who is hiring? What skills are employers looking for? Who is a center of influence in your profession? What are the trends in the industry? Although you can get some of that information online, the most direct way is through your contacts. Especially because they act as filters they give you the most relevant information to your success because they want you to be successful. They help direct your attention and efforts, and make it easier for you to act on the information, e.g., facilitate an introduction to an important contact. The more robust your network, then, the easier it is to find the next position when your current one comes to an end. The more influence you can bring to bear from others, the better. The people in your network may be able to hire you directly, or they will have access to people who are hiring or information on where the jobs are. Not only can this shorten the time when you are "between positions" or "in transition", it can make those times an important part of your career growth instead of stagnation.

By David J.P. Fisher
The key to having this network in place is constant cultivation. Building your network can't be an activity you start the day after you are laid off - it has to be a consistent part of your professional life. Too often, people are scrambling to make networking connections, and trying to leverage them too quickly, because they didn't lay any foundation when they were still employed. Take the time now to build those relationships, because when you know that there's a safety net of contacts and connections underneath you, you won't feel the stress of walking the career tightrope. You'll know that even if you fall off, you'll have a clear path to your next opportunity.

Your boss just asked you to do something, and because you wanted to make her happy, you said yes, but now that you're back at your desk, you're steaming because you really don't have time to do what is already expected of you, let alone take on an additional responsibility. So what do you do? According to Bonnie Lowe in a piece titled “When and how to say I just can't do it!” on the IncomeFlex Web site, it's normal to want to say yes to our superiors when we really need to say no. Try to think of your boss's perspective-she's probably crazy busy herself and not keeping track of everything you are doing. And when you told her you could do the project, she probably didn't give it a second thought. This is all likely to weigh heavily on the relationship you and your boss have, according to Lowe. You might start stressing and hurrying, making mistakes and missing your deadlines. So the bottom line is, you're going to have to tell your boss that as much as you'd like to help her out on this one, you just can't right now. Lowe says a good strategy is to ask your boss to help you prioritize what you have to do. That will give the two of you a chance to sit down and look at the reality of your schedule. It's likely your boss will acknowledge that reality when faced with the facts you provide, and you won't find yourself having to make excuses about your work further down the line.

Back from Brazil: Local companies say trade mission a success By Kathryn Skelton, Sun Journal LEWISTON, Maine (Nov. 29) – There was interest in spending time abroad at Hebron Academy, in buying collapsible food concentrate drums from Packgen and wearing Auburn-made shoes on oil-drilling platforms in the Pacific. "Our boots are engineered so they provide very, very good slip resistance in all temperatures," said Carl Spang, president of Falcon Performance Footwear. "You don't want to be slipping around on an oil rig." Spang and a dozen others returned a week ago from the Maine International Trade Center's latest trade mission to Brazil and Chile. Eleven companies made the trip, five of them -- Tex Tech Industries, Auburn Manufacturing, Falcon, Hebron Academy and Packgen -- from greater LewistonAuburn. "The experience was very good," said Spang, who also found a
natural market for the company's mining boots. "We have come away with two very good possibilities for Chile and Brazil, Chile is nearer-term. We're hoping to line up a distributor by January." Noah Love, an admissions counselor and Hebron grad from the class of 2007, said Chile was a slightly harder sell, families tend to keep children close, but contacts made in Brazil have promise. Twenty-five percent of the private school's student body is international. Two students from Brazil attend now. "In Brazil, if you have the resources to do so, it's sort of a given that you're going to send your kid to a year abroad," Love said. MITC President Janine BisaillonCary said the center has organized as least one trade mission a year since 1996. Using people on the ground, the 11 companies booked 105 match-making meetings in advance with potential buyers or
business partners. The trip spanned Nov. 12 to 19. "I think the quality of the companies are some of the best we've ever had participating," she said. "There was a big demand for advanced materials or advanced textiles. It . . . made me realize there's still quite a niche in L-A." Packgen President John Lapoint sent Dan Forte on that company's behalf. "(Brazil) is one of those up-andcoming countries," he said. "Between the (Petrobras) refinery and food concentrates, it really fits us well. Dan is opening some doors for us, so we're excited about that." Kathie Leonard, CEO and owner of Auburn Manufacturing, made 10 sales calls in each country in the space of three days. "My goal was to find out what the mining industry in Chile might be using for hotwork protection. We've got a lot of breadth in our product line that appealed to them,"
Leonard said. "I also found they really like buying American products. It's always a pleasure to hear that when you go away." She was most surprised at the reception received by a modular insulation kit, a product cut to fit tight spaces or cover odd-shaped valves and pipe components. Leonard overcame the language barrier by playing a YouTube video that showed off how it works. "Already one of the companies I called has come to me about that product, asking more questions, needs more technical help," Leonard said. "Music to my ears." Representatives from Bernstein Shur, Hydro International, Invest in Maine, Maine Central Institute, Mathews Brothers, Southworth International Group and Yale Cordage were also part of the Brazil-Chile mission.

Resumes Before the Job Fair, do a little research to find out how many companies are going to be on site. Plan to take enough resumes for all the companies you know you’re interested in, and at least one resume for every two companies that you’re not as interested in. While you may think that you are indifferent in a certain company, the display or a chat with a company representative may change your mind. Be sure that your resume is current and accurate. Have someone proofread them before you make copies! Typos and other errors can be considered sloppiness on your part and your resume quickly “screened out” because of it. Finally, don’t be afraid to distribute your resume to company representatives, that’s what you are there for! Prepare a “One-Minute Commercial” Your “One-Minute Commercial” should be a compilation, summarized, of your resume and cover letter. It should be a brief but descriptive statement about your abilities and skills as well as what you’re looking for in a new job. It is very much like your objective statement. A JOB VS. A CAREER: FIGURING OUT HOW TO GET THERE By Cynthia A. McMahon
Job Fairs are excellent places to land jobs, because employers are there specifically to line up candidates for interviews, and some even interview and hire on-the-spot. While Job Fairs can be overwhelming with many people waiting to see the same employer, the pressure of on-the-spot interviewing, noise and sometimes confusion, they are often a great tool and a good way to meet company representatives face-to-face. Create a list of your strengths and skills acquired in your previous positions and make notes on how they would relate to a new career. If many of your skills are non-transferable – perhaps because they were specialized or you worked in a small environment that did not keep up with changing technology – consider returning to school for some training. Do you think about leaving your current job for a dream job-such as a golf instructor, winemaker, horse trainer, pastry chef or innkeeper? Well, now you can check out the reality of such a life for a price from Vocation Vacations in Portland, Ore. According to Will Shanley in the Denver Post, this company allows clients to test drive their dream jobs while they are on vaca¬tion. If you're burned out at your job and spend a lot of time daydreaming how life could be if you only had the perfect job, you might want to give it a try. This way you don't have to come up with an initial investment and take the plunge, you just come up with the money and time for a vacation. The founder of Vocation Vacations, Brian Kurth, came up with the idea for his company while he was stuck in a traffic jam in Chicago trying to make his way to work. Kurth, 39, says he was a bored and burnt out marketing director for a telecom company. He spent six months traveling and talking to other burnt out workers who had dream jobs swim¬ming in the backs of their minds before he started Vocation Vacations. The company charges prices that range from $350 for a basic experience to $5,000 for a week in Alaska as an outfitter. The company offers 70 occupations and 162 vacations. It plans to add more options in the future. Most of the vacations range from one to seven days. Kurth wants to help people change careers or at least learn about their dream jobs in a productive way.

How to Become a "Dream Employee" While my blog, The Mindful Manager, is usually about how to become a great manager, this post from it is about how to become a Dream Employee--especially if you're an individual contributor. If you're a manager, I recommend you share this with your team and use it to spark conversation about how each team member can provide the most value. I think it's also useful as a way to provide employees with a sense of how they can help influence their destiny during challenging times. By consciously looking at their job through the perspective listed below, they increase their ability to stay employed and be employable in a challenging job market. Here's the post: How to Become a Dream Employee When I conduct management training and ask: “What do you find most challenging about managing people?”, two of the most common frustrations I hear from managers are: 1) “I wish my employees would show more initiative!” They do the minimum to solve a problem or answer a customer’s question, but seem to think, “How else can I add value?” or “What else can I do so this problem doesn’t happen again?” 2) “I wish my employees were less focused on what we can do for them, and more focused on how they help us” Just as employees want to know that management cares about them, management wants to believe that their employees have their best interest at heart and look for opportunities to help them achieve their goals. Questions and requests seem more focused on themselves, rather than on helping their manager achieve his or her goals, or their employer achieve its

goals. You can become a manager’s dream – and be seen as a High Potential Employee – by adopting the mindset of an external consultant. Rather than think of yourself as an employee, think of you as an independent consultant and your manager as your client. As an independent consultant, you’re not entitled to your supervisor’s “business”, you earn it. You earn it through continually providing value and showing an interest in finding ways to provide even more value. To Become a Dream Employee, Ask Questions You can achieve Dream Employee status by applying one of the skills that help external consultants provide value to their clients: asking clarity-producing questions. Consultants seeking to help their clients grow their business want to ask these types of questions: 1. “What are my client’s biggest challenges and frustrations; what keeps them up at night?” 2. “What are their goals and aspirations; what do they want most to accomplish?” 3. “What obstacles keep them from getting where they want to go?” 4. “What drives their customers crazy – about doing business with other businesses in their industry – and how can the client use this knowledge to help them differentiate their business by becoming more customer-friendly?” 5. “What processes and practices do I see in other industries that are not used in my client’s, that my client could adapt, and would enable them to leapfrog over the competition?” How to Apply This To Your Job 1. Tell your supervisor that you read this article – better yet, show it to them

– and ask them if the two of you can go through these questions. Share your desire to provide as much value to them and your employer as possible. 2. Tell your supervisor your understanding of your employer’s current goals, initiatives, and priorities. Ask your supervisor for feedback on refining and filling in the gaps of your understanding. Include in the discussion goals and key priorities of your department and your supervisor. 3. Ask your supervisor about their biggest challenges, frustrations, and wishes. Ask your supervisor how you can be most helpful to him or her related to these. If you would like, you can preface your question by saying “I would imagine that the kinds of things I can be doing to be most helpful in these areas are _________. Are there other things you would like to see more of from me and our team that would be helpful?” 4. Spend time thinking about how you can help your employer and supervisor achieve their goals and address their issues. Imagine you are an external consultant who wants to continue to earn your client’s continued business by providing tremendous value. 5. Keep on the lookout for ways to help solve the problems or achieve the goals your supervisor shared with you. By paying attention to how other people solve problems or innovate where you work and read about what other business are doing. Inc. Magazine is a great source of innovative ideas. Talk with friends and relatives from other industries and ask them how they solve such problems and what they do that works. 6. Ask your supervisor for feedback on how you can provide even more value to him/her and your employer.
processes could be improved upon – made more efficient, more customercentric, more productive, etc?” 8. Practice lateral thinking. Keep on the lookout for examples of effective practices and processes you notice in other businesses. Think of how your employer or department might be able to adapt them—and by doing so-become more effective and profitable. 9. Engage your curiosity. Ask questions. Everywhere. All the time. Even if your current supervisor is not particularly interested or open to your ideas, don’t despair. The mind-set and skills you will develop will help you become a very unique and in-demand employee. Enhancing your career can depend on how ready you are to take advantage of opportunity when it presents itself. That means that you need to be ready to introduce yourself quickly to people you might run into casually in the office or in other business settings. Mike Myatt, in the article “How's your elevator pitch?” on the Ezine Articles Web site, says that he has several versions of his own introduction prepared depending on audience, environment and need. Myatt says that a good introduction imbues you with credibility and confidence and allows you to tell others what you do and how you are working toward eliminating fears the company has, eradicating painful situations the company faces, or meeting needs the company has pinpointed for itself. And Myatt says you should be able to do this in 50 words or less. So, for instance, when you run into a manager, you could introduce yourself by saying: “My name is Jim Johnson. I'm a marketing representative. I specialize in making sure new clients are comfortable in their knowledge about our services before they commit their money to us. And this year, I'm working toward the goal of 100 percent client satisfaction.” Once you have an introduction that you like, work to perfect it. Practice it – and then use it when the opportunity arises.

The New England average was 7.6 percent; rates in other states in the region were 5.3 percent in New Hampshire, 5.6 percent in Vermont, 7.3 percent in Massachusetts, 10.4 percent in Rhode Island, and 8.7 percent in Connecticut.
Payroll Survey of Businesses – According to estimates from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, nonfarm payroll jobs were down 1,600 in October to a total of 596,100. Combined with a small downward revision to September estimates, this reverses much of the unusually large job gain reported for Maine a month ago. U.S. nonfarm payroll jobs were up 80,000 in October. payroll job data will be benchmarked to a lagging but more comprehensive count of wage and salary jobs this winter. That data, which is collected through unemployment insurance tax filings of employers, indicates the number of payroll jobs was relatively unchanged in the first half of 2011 Not Seasonally-Adjusted Substate Data The not seasonally-adjusted statewide unemployment rate was 6.6 percent in October, down from 6.9 percent a year ago. Not seasonally-adjusted rates ranged from 5.5 percent in Cumberland County to 9.3 percent in Somerset County. Rates tended to be lower than the statewide average in coastal counties and higher than average among northern and rim counties. Among metro areas, unemployment rates were lower than the statewide average in Portland-South Portland-Biddeford (5.5 percent) and Bangor (6.1 percent) and slightly higher in Lewiston-Auburn (6.7 percent). Detailed labor force and unemployment data for the state, counties, and 31 labor market areas; nonfarm jobs data for the state and the three metropolitan areas; and much more data is available at www.maine.gov/labor/cwri/data. html. Maine to add more job search workshops
Be sure to include some accomplishments for each position you’ve held. For example, if you were a salesperson you might include information like “increased sales by 25 percent my first year by attending industry trade shows,” or if you are an accountant, maybe you “saved the company 20 percent by comparing long distance options.” Make sure any claims you make are true and that you can provide proof if asked.
AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — State labor officials are planning additional job-search workshops for unemployed Mainers in anticipation of federally funded unemployment programs expiring at the end of the year.
programs come to an end.
Commissioner Robert Winglass says more than 17,000 jobless Mainers are expected to be lose benefits in the coming months as the federal Emergency Unemployment Compensation and Extended Benefits
In anticipation of an influx of additional job seekers, the department is planning to double the number of job search seminars and resume workshops at its 12 career centers.
Winglass says unless Congress reauthorizes the programs, jobless people can expect far fewer weeks of unemployment benefits next year as the programs are phased out.

What, in fact, does it mean to be reasonable? What does it mean to be unreasonable? And what does it mean to reason? According to James Allen in “As a Man Thinketh”, when we declare someone as being unreasonable, we usually mean that he or she is violating the ideal of thinking about something and arriving at the “truth” of a situation by using intellect. So it follows that people who are dubbed reasonable in situations are looked upon as using their higher powers of intellect to make a decision and in ways that are likely considered gentle and compassionate. Now, we've all been unreasonable in life at one time or another-that is we've lost touch with our higher selves and resorted to our lower faculties during which we behaved in ways that were likely considered unthinking and selfish. Most people feel unhappy or undone when they abandon reason for something more akin to animal behavior. But how does a person remain reasonable throughout some of the stressful sit¬uations that seem to be just around each corner in life? Here are some tips for trying to maintain your equilibrium in life's trials: • Stop before you speak or act. Think about what you are about to say or do? Is it unkind? Is it vengeful? Is it self-centered? If so, you may have just thrown off the cloak of reason and donned unreasonableness. • Is what you are considering saying or doing sweet and forgiving? Is it gently persuasive? • Is what you are about to do or say based on any type of prejudice? • Are you trying to prove or disprove something? • Have you carefully weighed and considered everything important about the situation? • Is what you are about to do or say kind, moderate and just?
