Job Fairs and the New Economy
F E AT U R E D ADVERTISERS:
By Tim Sardano Employment Times LLC
What are you doing to make job fairs work for you?
A couple years ago job fairs were a place where employers could connect with jobseekers about opportunities within their organization. Both sides would walk away from the event satisfied with their efforts and with calculable results. Since then the economy took a turn for the worse: companies were laying off more than they were hiring, and opportunities for work were at a premium. The job market was very difficult as more experienced workers entered the talent pool but openings were being drastically reduced. Fast forward to 2011 and here we are at the start of a new job fair season. We’re happy to say that we’re seeing more job fairs listed than we saw in the first
quarters of 2009 and 2010, respectively. And more organizations are registering to exhibit at these events for openings, to collect resumes or to promote their education/career advancement programs. Unfortunately the frustrations of the last two years’ job fairs can still be felt today, but to that I ask: What are you doing to make job fairs work for you? BEFORE THE FAIR... One of the reasons we list exhibitors in our job fair ads is so you, the jobseeker, will know who will be at the event. Another reason is we hope you will not only read the list but use it to your advantage. Research the companies that interest you:
visit their website, check out their social media pages (Facebook, Twitter, etc.), and Google their company name for news. Gaining insight into who the company is and what they’re doing will give you a competitive advantage as you go into the event. On this similar note, it’s becoming more frequent for organizations to search the Internet for an applicant’s online profile. Make sure your social media pages are free of anything that could harm your chances, such as friend comments, improper photos, etc. THE FIRST IMPRESSION... Even though the economy is turning

JOB FAIR.... around unemployment is still high, which means job fairs will see an increase in both exhibitors and attendees. You’ll need to stand out even more now than in the past. The 30-second elevator speech is nice to have, but job fair exhibitors will be meeting with potentially hundreds of candidates so you need to make yourself memorable. And sometimes to be memorable you have to remind people about yourself (oxymorons can be good metaphors, too). Aside from dressing professionally and having plenty of well-written resumes, here are some quick tips: • Ask the exhibitor for their business card and write any notes from your discussion on the back (it’s not a bad idea to bring personal business cards for yourself, either). • Did something you read in the news interest you even more about their openings? Are you a fan of their products? Tell them! • As you leave don’t just say thanks, acknowledge their efforts. Let the exhibitor know that you know they’re busy and you appreciate their time. • Most importantly, make sure you have their mailing address or email and follow up with a thank-you note. SELL YOURSELF... Selling can be a tricky word. In our help wanted display ads we encourage the employer to not just list their openings but to pull out what makes them different. We focus on selling a position to the jobseeker. In other words: what’s attractive about working for their organization versus another? Think this way about yourself when you attend a job fair and sell the idea of you as an employee, as opposed to selling what’s listed on your resume. How do you do this? That’s really up to you. You know you best and if you researched the company before the job fair you will be able compare their needs with your talents and properly sell the idea as the best candidate. MAKE CONNECTIONS... Job fairs are a great place to meet people who are in a similar situation as yourself, be it unemployment, recent graduate, or casually looking. The fact is, when you’re at a job fair you are also networking. Strike up a conversation with the person next to you while you’re waiting in line to speak with an exhibitor. You already know you have something in common. Pick each other’s brain about what you’re doing to look for work and see if you can help each other out.

Take steps to make up for lack of college savings By Wendy Donahue, Chicago Tribune, (MCT) WASHINGTON – If Ken Clark, author of “The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Paying for College,” could reduce that complex task to one simple rule, it would be this: “Plan on putting away $75 per kid per month from the day they’re born, and that will get you four years at a state school.” Clark, a certified financial planner, realizes it doesn’t factor in this reality, among others: “College planning is one of the ultimate procrastination items. We’re so optimistic about our ability to deal with it later. We don’t realize till we get there how brutal it’s going to be.” If you haven’t yet saved a penny for higher education, there are still actions to take. But Clark urges parents not to do it this way: “What I see over and over again is, right when kids go to college, we’re typically in our prime earning years, 45 to 50 years old. We make two critical mistakes. Because we haven’t saved for college, one, we stop putting money in our
www.MyJobWave.com
retirement plan and, two, we raid our retirement plan. By the time our kids are done with college, we have only 15 years to make up for the damage we’ve done, and that’s a tall order.” Retirement loans don’t exist. Student loans do. Here are other options he wants you to consider: – Tax credit: The relatively new American Opportunity Credit expands the previous Hope tax credit (which applied to the first two years of post-secondary education) to four years. Taxpayers who meet income limitations are eligible for up to a 100 percent credit on the first $2,000 of education expenses per year plus 25 percent on the next $2,000. “This is not a deduction,” Clark said. “It’s a credit; it hits your bottom line. It’s a great deal.” (Go to irs.gov for more information.) – Community college: “One thing that I for years have been making the rally cry for
is community college,” he said. “Rather than battle to keep your kid out of the frat house and bar and fighting over him getting a D-minus in algebra at the state school, consider having your kid stay home, go to community college, get a job, then two years later go to the college he wants to go to. At the same time, he’ll mature and avoid a lot of the typical college mistakes.” Clark contends that it’s easier to transfer to some state colleges than it is to gain admission as a freshman. “Going in as a junior to take upper-division classes with a solid GPA from a community college is a great play.” – Savings plan: Consider starting a taxdeferred 529 college savings plan. Some states give a tax deduction or matching credit plus, Clark said, “if you take it out to pay for college, you pay no tax on the growth, whereas if you stuck it in a money market in a bank, you’re going to pay tax,
Employment Times - ME • NH
etc.” With college costs rising 5 to 7 percent a year, another type of 529 plan to consider is prepaid tuition, where parents lock in today’s tuition rate for future attendance. “I would definitely look at that if I have under 10 years,” Clark said. “There’s nowhere (else) I can get a 5 to 7 percent return on a three-year investment.” – Public service: An oft-overlooked option is a loan forgiveness program in a public service field, such as nursing. “Some states will wipe out $10,000 a year (from college debt) after a certain period for being a teacher.” He also added that the military remains one of the great deals for paying for college. ___ (c) 2011, Chicago Tribune. JOB FAIR.... successful candidate. Write a short note or email message that includes: • Their name to show you remember them; and it’s polite! Send separate thank-you notes if you met with multiple people from the same organization.
The major difference between job fairs now and in the last couple years is that companies are hiring more but you’ll still have the same amount of competition. It is vital in your search that you make the job fair work for you, and the only way to do that is to prepare ahead and present yourself as the best candidate.
• Thank them again for their time. • Name the job fair where you met. This is job fair season, afterall.
OPEN TO THE PUBLIC
• Reiterate your interest in the position and why you would be the best choice. • And if something quirky came up during your discussion, make note of that as well. It would be a great reminder!
