Are you prepared for the phone interview?
(ARA) – When employers advertise an open position, they receive a mountain of resumes. As a result, many are turning to telephone interviews to screen applicants. If you’re one of the 13.5 million Americans looking for a job, it pays to plan in advance for the prospect of interviewing over the phone. Telephone screening saves a lot of time. Paula M. Scott, director of Career Services at Brown Mackie College Michigan City, shares advice she uses to prepare students for successful phone interviews with prospective employers. “The phone interview is a screening tool that helps employers
narrow down the number of applicants,” says Scott. “It’s important to give a 100 percent effort because the next step – a face-to-face interview – depends on it.” In an April Economic News Release, the Bureau of Labor and Statistics reports some job gains in professional and business services, health care, leisure and hospitality and mining. Still, the unemployment rate hovers at 8.8 percent, and applicants face hefty competition in the marketplace. What do you sound like on the phone? Scott and her staff regularly prepare students at Brown Mackie College Michigan City for all aspects of a successful employment search. “In a phone interview, the voice does it all,” she says. “No one can see facial expressions or body language over the phone. The first step is to record yourself practicing answers to interview questions.” Many of us don’t realize how often we mumble or use “filler words,” such as “um” and “like.” Scott recommends cleaning up speech habits before a telephone interview. “Smile when you speak; it reflects in the tone of your voice.” “Dress for the interview,” she says. “Don’t laugh. People tend to feel and act more professional when dressed for work, and the voice reflects attitude. It also helps to stand rather than sit during the call. A job seeker’s voice seems to better project when standing. “Prepare like you would for a regular interview. Know your strengths and weaknesses, and plan to speak about accomplishments you want to share. Also, research the company who has taken interest in you,” Scott says. She lists a wealth of tips for a successful phone interview, including: Before the phone interview: • Dress for the occasion • Use a landline; a cell phone may drop the call or distort an applicant's voice • Turn off call waiting; it’s annoying • No background noise; no TV, no music, no kids, no barking dogs • Place your resume in front of you, along with the employment ad • Keep a pen, paper and calculator on hand; take notes During the phone interview: • Ask the interviewer for the correct spelling of his/her name; verify the title • Smile as you speak; the interviewer will hear it • Stand as you speak; your voice will project better

to get noticed and land an interview. Those who succeed are sometimes not prepared to answer questions from prospective employers. Two specialists from Brown Mackie College - Miami have teamed up to offer insight into questions interviewees are likely to hear. Human Resources Generalist Beverly Smith is responsible for hiring qualified professionals at Brown Mackie College – Miami. Gizelle Ortiz-Velazquez, director of Career Services at the same Brown Mackie College campus, works daily coaching students and graduates on interview preparedness. Together, they outline seven key interview questions to expect. What do you know about us? “I usually begin with this question,” says Smith. “This lets me know how well a candidate researched the company. When applicants know the company and understand the position, they are able to talk about their marketable skills and how they relate to the job. The answer tells me a lot about how qualified they are to be here." Tell me about yourself as it relates to the position. “This is a broad question that lets the interviewer know if you have a good sense of the position and the company,” says Ortiz-Velazquez. “I coach students to stay away from personal information and focus on skill sets and how they relate to the position. It also opens the door for students who don’t have much experience to sell themselves to an employer. This is a good time to remind an employer that your training is strong and included an internship or externship where you gained a real world view of the work. The great thing about hiring someone out of school is they don’t come with bad work habits. The employer gets the opportunity to train a new hire the way he or she wants them to be trained.” What are weaknesses?

“A standard question that people many people dread, but it’s asked often. Employers are tying to find out how you see yourself,” Smith says. “The answer can demonstrate how you approach a challenge, and maybe help identify areas for improvement.”
May 16–29, 2011
What changes will impact your industry in next three years? “Everyone should expect at least one question specific to the industry,” Smith says. “It’s important for an applicant to demonstrate involvement in professional associations and awareness of industry issues and changes.”
Kennebec Somerset & Sebasticook Valley Regional
Job Fair
What skills and abilities make you an ideal candidate for the position? “This is an opportunity to market yourself. You can talk about your skills and knowledge and detail how they match the position,” OrtizVelazquez says. “The interviewer discovers how well you understand the position. It’s especially important for someone who is changing careers and seeking employment in a different direction than previous experience demonstrates. The candidate must be able to articulate transferable skills that relate to the new position.” What do you like most and least about your current or last job? “Employers will ask this question to discover your mindset. You don’t ever want to talk negatively about another company during an interview. It’s a red flag for an employer,” OrtizVelazquez says. “If someone is willing to share negative comments about a current or previous position, the next negative comments may be said about the position sought now. You can point out past responsibilities you didn’t care for, but always keep your answer positive.” Tell me one thing we should know about you. “It’s always a surprise where they'll go with this one,” says Smith. “If the answer is ‘I love motorcycles,’ I know this person knows how to shut work off on the weekends. Others keep the focus on business and speak of commitment to success or being a team player.” “Interviewers tend to begin with general questions and drill down deeper to ascertain problem-solving abilities,” says Ortiz-Velazquez. “It’s important to keep answers specific to the question without rambling.” Smith says she now schedules longer periods of time for interviews. “The economy is driving people to cast a wider net and explore options they wouldn’t have before. The questions are designed to find the right match for the position.”

Once you’ve chosen a style (formal, informal, professional, elegant, etc.) you’ll need to make sure you have dates for all the positions you’ve held that you intend to include. A good rule of thumb to follow is to list the last ten years of employment unless you have had more than five positions in those ten years. If you have had five positions in the last five or six years then list only those, but be prepared to answer questions from your interviewer on why you have “job hopped so much. The interviewer may not use that term exactly, but that is what they are thinking, so have a good answer ready.

Customer Service & Sales as possible. Pack as much punch into the fewest number of words as you can.
Cover letters examined
There are three basic parts to a cover letter—the introduction, the body, and the closing. Here are things to keep in mind when writing each... Introduction There are four ways to go about writing the introduction or opening: • Traditional, in which you simply give your reason for writing, as in, “I am writing to express my interest in‌â€? • Creating curiosity, in which you begin with a stunning achievement, such as, “After a five-year commitment dedicated to the welfare of Somali refugees, I am now ready to add value to your‌â€?
Bill Ryan Ryan Career Services LLC Since we are moving toward becoming a paperless society the question often comes up in the context of job searching, whether or not cover letters are still necessary. The short answer is yes. Typically, when attempting to get the nod by an employer that you are to be hired there are three initial doors through which you must sequentially pass—cover letter, resume, and interview. In each case you have an opportunity to make an impression. And in each case you have a chance to progressively present yourself in greater depth. The starting point is with the cover letter. So, let’s examine this tool more in more detail. The cover letter is your selfintroduction. Its purpose is to get the hiring manager interested enough in you so that they will want to review your
resume, which in turn will hopefully prompt an interview. There are some useful assumptions to make about such an introduction. One, is that the hiring manager has a lot more work to do than time in which to do it. They are pressured and probably stressed. Also, they have a staggering amount of applicants for very few jobs. This encourages the hiring manager to find reasons for eliminating applicants, since they have to reduce a huge number to a very small one for eventual interviews. Finally, they have seen boring and generic cover letters time and time again. One that has just enough distinction and relevance to catch their eye is what they are hoping to find. With these assumptions in mind, be prepared to write your cover letter in a way as targeted, economic, and powerful
• Leveraging referrals, in which you mention the name of a trusted resource, as in, “Following the recommendation of your colleague Jim Hudson, I am eager to speak with you about‌â€? • Emphasize your headline, in which you point out your value proposition, as in, “ As a Network Systems Analyst with extensive business development experience I‌â€? Body The body is the most important part of the cover letter. It’s here where you make the sale. Whether you do so in brief paragraphs, bullets, or some combination of the two, describe pointedly why are you are qualified for the specific position to which you are applying. Nothing speaks to qualifications better than actual
accomplishments and results you’ve realized from your career thus far. Just like we’re more inclined to purchase a mutual fund with an impressive performance history, the same goes for a job candidate who can claim rich achievements. Since your resume should have a store of these attainments, harvest it for summary items to put into the cover letter body. Just be sure to paraphrase and rewrite so that your cover letter doesn’t look like a copy and paste job from your resume. Also, the more you understand the employer and their needs the more direct can be your selection of relevant accomplishments. Closing The closing should be, you guessed it, brief and should execute two things: 1.) confidently express why you deserve a closer look by the hiring manager; and 2.) indicate your expectation for a followup with the company. For example, “Acme’s services, market prominence, and expansion potential are very appealing, and I am convinced my skills will advance me as a key player within your company. Thank you for your consideration. As the saying goes, you don’t get a second chance to make a first impression. So make your cover letters count. If you can't talk to two people at the same, and lament that you wish you were a good multitasker, take heart, you might be a good multitasker after all. A new Cornell study reports that most people are pretty good at multitasking sensory material, but that when the sensory characteristics are too close in nature, problems arise. That means that you might be able to listen to classical music and have a conversation or write a report, but that if you try to listen to two conversations at once, you will probably not be able to focus on both speakers. In the study, participants had no problems in learning complex structures that were streamed at them, such as tones, colors and even speech. However, according to Christopher Conway, a National Institutes of Health research fellow at Indiana University and co-author of the study, “performance dropped when the two sets of sequences were from the same perceptual class of stimuli, such as two sets of speech stimuli. Overall, the results show that humans have a very powerful learning system that allows them to learn from many different sources of stimuli-as long as that stimuli isn't too similar. So, if your employees want to listen to iPods or participate in other forms of multitasking, in general, it shouldn't affect them negatively by taking away their focus.
