(ARA) - You learned a lot in college, but it’s not likely that you took a class on student loan repayment. If you’ve just graduated from college and are receiving the final tally on how much you owe for your education, you’re not alone - today’s college students owe on average a little more than $23,000, according to a National Postsecondary Student Aid study. Many of those students are probably asking the same question: What are my options for repaying my loans? Here are the answers to a few of the questions you might have as you begin paying off your education: When do I have to start paying off my student loans? Most loans offer a grace period after you graduate, so check with your lender. Private student loans offer a variety of grace periods depending on the lender; the most common types of federal loans offer a six-month grace period. What is loan consolidation? Should I consolidate my loans? If you have more than one student loan, a consolidation loan allows you to combine all your student loans into a single loan with one balance. You'll be able to simplify repayment by making just one payment, once a month. There are consolidation loans both for private student loans as well as federal student loans. For private student loans, a private consolidation loan allows you to combine multiple private student loans into one new loan. This option may also allow you to lower your current monthly payment by providing you with a longer repayment period and may offer a lower interest rate than the average of your current individual loans. You should look for a lender, such as Wells Fargo, that offers a private consolidation loan with no application, origination or early repayment fees. If you have federal student loans, contact the U.S. Department of Education Direct Lending Program. The Federal Direct Consolidation Loan lets you combine your federal student loans into one new loan. You'll have a single monthly loan payment, which may make it easier to manage your payments. If you plan to work in a public service job, having a Federal Direct Consolidation Loan allows you to apply for loan forgiveness under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program. For any consolidation loan, be sure to read

the terms. If the new loan results in a higher interest rate you’ll need to weigh that against other considerations such as a lower payment, longer repayment term, or repayment benefits. What if I can’t afford to pay off my loans right now? You’re probably not alone if you are asking this question, as many college graduates are struggling to find jobs with the desired pay - or any job - in this economy. If you can afford to make your loan payments, even if it's just the minimum amount, you should. If you are experiencing financial difficulties and are having a hard time making your payments, work with your lender to figure out alternatives. Remember, your lender wants to work with you to find a solution. Your loan provider may offer the following options: • Temporary changes to repayment plans. For a limited period of time, you may be able to pay less on monthly payments. If you have a Wells Fargo private student loan you may be able to take advantage of an interest-only repayment option for the first four years. • Payment forbearance for private or federal student loans. If you demonstrate financial hardship, you may be able to temporarily stop making loan payments. Plans like these offer this option to those borrowers who demonstrate a willingness and ability to repay the loan. • Income-Based Repayment Plan for federal loans. This plan bases your monthly payment on your yearly income and is designed for those experiencing a partial financial hardship. • Deferment for federal loans. You may be eligible to postpone repaying your federal student loans for a defined period of time depending on your life situation and type of loan, such as experiencing economic hardship, going back to school or enlisting in the military. Keep in mind that if you decide that a deferment or forbearance is your best option, your loans will continue to accrue interest during that period. For most loans, the accrued interest will be capped (meaning added to the principal balance) at the end of that period. This option should be considered only if you absolutely cannot make your payments at that time. Enhancing your career can depend on how ready you are to take advantage of opportunity when it presents itself. That means that you need to be ready to introduce yourself quickly to people you might run into casually in the office or in other business settings. Mike Myatt, in the article “How's your elevator pitch?” on the Ezine Articles Web site, says that he has several versions of his own introduction prepared depending on audience, environment and need. Myatt says that a good introduction imbues you with credibility and confidence and allows you to tell others what you do and how you are working toward eliminating fears the company has, eradicating painful situations the company faces, or meeting needs the company has pinpointed for itself. And Myatt says you should be able to do this in 50 words or less. So, for instance, when you run into a manager, you could introduce yourself by saying: “My name is Jim Johnson. I'm a marketing representative. I specialize in making sure new clients are comfortable in their knowledge about our services before they commit their money to us. And this year, I'm working toward the goal of 100 percent client satisfaction.” Once you have an introduction that you like, work to perfect it. Practice it – and then use it when the opportunity arises.
Preparing for small moments can open doors to a bigger future.
NH Receives $2.3 Million Grant For Workforce Development In Healthcare Field dhhs.nh.gov CONCORD, NH – The New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), Office of Minority Health (OMH) is receiving a $2,380,059 grant to fund the NH Health Profession Opportunity Project (NH HPOP). The grant will provide low-income individuals with opportunities for education and training in a variety of occupations in the health care field that pay well and are expected to either experience labor shortages or be in high demand. Some examples include: medical assistants, home health care aides, licensed nursing assistants, emergency medical technicians, dietitians, licensed vocational nurses, registered nurses, dental assistants and hygienists, physical and occupational therapists, medical coders, radiographers, respiratory therapists, medical interpreters, and health information technicians. "This grant is an opportunity for our State to train adults who are currently unemployed or in low-paying jobs," said DHHS Commissioner Nicholas Toumpas. "The healthcare industry is one of New Hampshire’s most stable employment fields and statistics

indicate continued growth in health occupations over the next decade. Despite the current jobs available and the projected growth, our State is experiencing a healthcare workforce shortage. These funds will help workers invest in themselves while helping the State build this valuable workforce." DHHS' OMH is leading the NH HPOP, which is a five-year initiative. Over the five-year period a minimum of 800 low-income adults and 200 incumbent workers will be educated in the areas of Allied Health, Long-Term Care, Child Care Health Advocacy, Health Information Technology, and Nursing. At least 25 percent of all participants trained will be racial, ethnic and linguistic minorities, who are disproportionately underrepresented in the NH higher education and health workforce systems. "As we build a more skilled and diverse healthcare workforce, the quality of medical care will improve for all populations, including racial, ethnic and linguistic minorities," said OMH Director Dr. Trinidad Tellez. "This funding opportunity will assure the future economic success of the
individuals we train, and contribute to more prosperous and healthier communities across NH." OMH has partnered with DHHS' Division of Family Assistance (DFA), the Department of Labor, and the Office of Workforce Opportunity in the project design, and will count on these and other partners to implement the program. The objectives include: Training individuals enrolled in the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program as well as other low-income individuals in highdemand health professions; Connecting the workforce needs of healthcare employers with an expanding labor pool of skilled workers; Enhancing the infrastructure of training programs Statewide to recruit and retain minority students The funding is being made available through the US Department of Health and Human Services, Administration for Children and Families (ACF) under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Funds are available through SFY 2011. An additional $9,617,006 may be available through SFY 2015.

Work/life balance expert Jim Bird (www.worklifebalance.com) says we hear all the time how important it is to have jobs we love. Yet most people he knows don’t love their work. They either accept it or tolerate it. And that’s okay, Bird says. He points out that while it’s not necessary to be passionate about your job, you should be passionate about how well you do the job. Why? Because that’s what you do for yourself.
Jump Start Your Job Search Workshop
Lacking passion for your job doesn’t necessarily mean you’re living your life less well than the individual who is passionate about work. Your passion may surface in regard to other areas of your life. Bird offers these suggestions for generating more ardor for living:

The key is to set aside time for doing whatever it is you love to do. The first step is deciding you’re going to do it. The important second step, Bird says, is to go for it.

I've heard it said various ways that you get a 5-, 7-, or 30-second initial scan from the hiring manager. I can tell you personally that when I was an HR manager and had 100 resumes to go through, my initial scan was about 5 seconds long, and I was looking for something to catch my eye. Here are the three areas I looked at when considering whether to invest more time: Professional Formatting When you're reviewing 100 resumes a day, the ones that really stick out are the ones in which you can tell the person invested time into creating. The professional and executive resume formats that were well-organized, easy to read, and perfectly laid out really made reviewing the resume easier-and definitely caught my attention. When you're comparing a professionally organized and strategically laid out resume to a messy, unprofessional, and disorganized one, the choice of which one to invest time into reading becomes a no-brainer. After all, why waste time searching through a document trying to find the info you need when someone else has clearly laid it out for you? Easy-to-Find Requirements When I posted a job ad online and was deluged with responses, I was appalled at how many people just shot me a resume that said absolutely nothing about the requirements that I had spent so much time writing to include in the ad. Normally, when I posted a job ad I would include: REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS and PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS. At the very least, to even be considered, the person had to possess the required qualifications; and the resumes that caught my attention were the ones that made it easy for me to see that they did indeed meet the requirements-either by listing them in the top or calling attention to them in a bold, underlined, or italicized font and placed throughout their resume. Want to put the nail in the coffin? (I know, Halloween humor... groan...) Call attention to the fact that you also meet their preferred qualifications. Meeting the required and preferred qualifications-and calling attention to this fact in your resume-makes you a perfect candidate for the job. Compelling, Easy-to-Read Contents Long paragraphs on resumes serve
Employment Times - ME • NH
one purpose... and that's to lose the hiring manager's attention. If you're using paragraphs with 5+ sentences then you not only lost my attention, but now the info I need isn't readily accessible; it's buried beneath an enormous amount of text density that I don't have the time to wade through. Keep it concise, cut out the mundane, and highlight your accomplishments. Don't go super crazy with the bold, underline, or italics, but use them when it fits, and use them to call attention to the most important information. Just to review-here's how to make it past the initial 5-second scan: 1) Professional, polished, and wellorganized format (colors and white space, good-messy and distracting, bad.) 2) Make it easy for the hiring manager to find exactly what he or she needsand to find it quickly. 3) Keep the content concise, and highlight the critical information the hiring manager needs in order to make the decision to call for the interview. Other strategies come into play when creating a compelling resume that will secure interviews, so if you're not sure your resume has the right stuff-and if you haven't heard of personal branding or incorporated it into your resume-it may be time to call a certified resume writer and get a resume checkup. If it means the difference between 3 interviews next week or 3 more months of job searching, you may want to consider speaking with a professional. Personal Branding: Standing out in the ‘Age of Information’ (ARA) - In today’s tough job market, it’s essential to make yourself as marketable as possible. Even as the economy begins to recover, unemployment rates are resting at more than nine percent nationwide, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics - meaning that more than 14.6 million people are on the prowl for a limited number of jobs nationwide. This ever-growing pool of job seekers, a downturned economy and the endless amounts of information available online mean 21st-century job hunters must work harder to stand out in the marketplace. In the age of information, employers are able to gather data on a job candidate with a simple click of a mouse - which means that now more than ever, it's essential for jobseekers to take control of their online presence by building their own personal brand. Dan Schawbel, founder of Millennial Branding, LLC and author of the international bestselling “Me 2.0: 4 Steps to Building Your Future,” has November 15 – November 28, 2010
made a career out of teaching new jobseekers and established professionals alike how to leverage the power of online media for personal empowerment and career success. “Before beginning a job search or a career, it’s important to understand the importance of discovering your personal brand,” says Schawbel. “You need to identify your unique talents, what you're passionate about, and the type of expertise you need to develop in order to reach your long-term goals.” Feeling a little overwhelmed? Schawbel offers three pieces of advice on how to start creating your own personal brand. • First things first: Find your niche an industry or field you wish to become the go-to expert in - and become extremely knowledgeable in this field. Before you begin marketing yourself, make sure to develop the relevant professional skills. An advanced degree can give you an edge too. • Once you have the right education, market your professional skills - and
take control of your online perception. Brand yourself before someone else does it for you. By establishing your own Web site or blog, and claiming your name on social networks, such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, you will have power over how people
...more than 14.6 million people are on the prowl for a limited number of jobs nationwide. perceive you online. If you don’t start controlling your online perceptions, then you will be judged solely based on popular opinion. • Network. Put yourself out there and be consistent in your messaging. Using your credentials, knowledge and education, build relationships with both the niche media that covers your industry and with your industry peers. Seek out mentors within your field and don’t be afraid to ask for endorsements from them once you’ve proven yourself.

Carrie Rubin, dean of career services at DeVry University, offers another way that you can begin your personal branding process - with the help of your university’s career services department. “DeVry University is a school that truly understands and appreciates the importance of personal branding. We help our students and alumni get a head start on their personal branding process, both through our career-focused degree programs and top-notch career services offerings,” says Rubin. “Some of the tactics we encourage our past and present students to implement include joining all social media networks available, becoming members of organizations that are affiliated with their disciplines or majors and attending networking events or conferences where they can promote themselves in a positive way, both online and offline.” Want more information on how to kick-start your job search?
