will achieve both goals—education and work readiness.”
JMG is an affiliate of the national program, Jobs for America’s Graduates. The Walmart Foundation gave Jobs for America’s Graduates an $800,000 grant. Along with JMG, the national organization shared the larger grant among 18 other state affiliates who work with 26,000 students nationwide. The money will specifically assist JMG in providing students with intensive career and job readiness preparation, motivational activities, school-to-work transition services, and academic remediation, and job and college placement skills.
---––
The Chairman of the Jobs for America’s Graduates’ Board of Directors, Governor Jack Markell of Delaware, hailed the grant as “coming at an extraordinarily crucial time for the young people who are served by Jobs for America's Graduates.” Governor Markell said, “The grant is targeted to two of our young peoples’ most urgent challenges: jobs and success in higher education. Jobs for America’s Graduates and its state affiliates are committed to making each Walmart dollar pay dividends for our young people. This expands opportunities for employment and higher education at a time of the highest unemployment rate among teenagers in American history. The Walmart Foundation is making a real difference in the direction of many young people’s lives.” Michelle Gilliard, a spokesperson for the Walmart Foundation said, “Now more than ever, we are looking for ways to address the dropout crisis and youth unemployment in the nation by providing opportunities for young people to complete their high school diploma and prepare them for college and careers. Our grant to Jobs for America's Graduates
Job training and college access have always been important for Walmart, and the retailer’s philanthropic arm is committed to funding programs that will help unemployed youth and mature workers obtain the skills and training they need to be active participants in America’s workforce. Jobs for America's Graduates (JAG) operates in 900 high schools in 32 states, serving approximately 42,000 youth each year. The results have been consistent over the past 30 years, including a 90%-plus graduation rate. JAG has just celebrated its 30th anniversary, having served nearly 800,000 students who face challenges to graduation. JAG’s core objectives are to enable students to graduate from high school and move successfully into the job market, college, or in many cases, both. Like everything else in life resumes are subject to fads. A few short years ago it was strongly suggested that all job seekers limit their resumes to one page, even if you’ve had extensive education and some really impressive positions along your career path. Today most interviewers will agree it is more important in how the resume flows than how long or short it is.

Data from the State of the State’s Health Workforce: Aligning Resources to Meet Maine’s Needs By Employment Times Staff with Information provided by the Maine Department of Labor
Maine’s most significant job producing sector over the last 10 years has been health care and for the next 10 years it is projected to have the highest demands and job growth in our state, according to information provided at the Maine Health Workforce Forum Summit on October 18 in Orono. The Summit is one of a number of ongoing initiatives of the Maine Health Workforce Forum, a statewide group created by the Maine Legislature in 2005 of public and private sector health care stakeholders. More than 160 Health care professionals and employers, state government leaders, policy makers,
college and university leaders, and workforce specialists from around the state attended the Summit to learn about health care workforce data, trends, issues, strategies and solutions from state and national experts, and how workforce planning is essential to ensure a sufficient supply of qualified professionals to meet health care, long-term care, and public health needs in Maine. “I think it went great,” said Garret Oswald, Director, Maine Jobs Council. “There was a packed house with a great mix of employers, educators from various institutions – both secondary and post-secondary – policy makers, and the four
Commissioners from Labor, Economic Development, DHHS, and Education.” Oswald said the goals of the Summit were to present trends and issues within the health sector to the audience and to establish an understanding of the data and demographics of the health workforce, including hearing from policy makers how the State is addressing issues both current and future. Focus on Jobs Stats provided at the Summit say current Maine Department of Labor (MDOL) data shows that: • Projected health sector job growth through 2018 exceeds all other
industry sectors in the state; • The over 60 occupational titles have job requirements ranging from a high school diploma/GED with on-the-job training, to professional certification programs and advanced degrees, and professional credentials, some of which are among the highest paying jobs in the state, and provides employment in every county; • In addition to direct care and health professional occupations the industry employs a wide array of technical and support staff and computer/health information technologists, jobs that extend into Maine’s private and public sectors, working in biotechnology research, regulatory and >>>

administrative jobs, and education and training organizations; • The health care sector wages in Maine are relatively high, and the number of jobs in health occupations will increase by 12% (approximately 7,500 jobs) over the 2008–2018 period. Projected retirements and attrition adds to the demand with current projections estimating approximately 10,000 of Maine’s health care workers will permanently exit the workforce by 2018, potentially adding an additional 10,000 jobs to the 2018 demand levels. Layoffs vs. Projections With so many stats showing growth but hospitals laying off in today’s economy, one has to wonder how they coincide. “Layoffs are in the short-term; projections are for the long-term. However it doesn’t negate the fact that there will be growth in the health sector over the next 10 years,” Oswald reminds us. “(The Maine Center for Workforce Research and Information) does a good job forecasting but the one thing they have not been able to nail down is when layoffs (in the private sector) will happen. We can’t say spcecifically when the needs exist but there will be growth.” And as the needs of the sector evolve, so too must that of the Maine workforce. “We focused a lot of our attention on direct care workers (when collecting data) because of immediate need. Various positions in direct care are projected to have shortages,” said Oswald. “Health information technology, electronic medical records
Health Care Focus
– that facilitate record sharing wherever you are – have infused the health sector. Training programs are getting up and running, and curriculum being created to meet these needs in the future as well.” The Summit “This was the first (Summit) and it was well done and well received,” said Oswald. “I think it’s a very productive way to connect education, training, workforce development, and business to make sure we meet demands of the sector.” Support for the Summit is provided by the Maine Health Care Sector Grant, which is funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act through the United States Department of Labor Employment and Training Administration and the Maine Department of Labor. Additional support for the Summit is provided by the University of Maine Office of Academic Affairs, School of Nursing and the College of Natural Science, Forestry and Agriculture.

Army medicine: A compelling career choice for all life stages (ARA) – The U.S. Army has one of the largest comprehensive systems of health care in the country and offers physicians the chance to provide highquality patient care without concern about the business side of running a practice. Army physicians often practice in diverse environments - from large hospitals in major American cities to rural clinics in third-world countries. These opportunities help expand their professional and leadership skills, regardless of where their careers take them. Biology lab to basic training When student Allyson Fewell decided on a career in medicine, it was because she knew she wanted to interact with people and serve humanity - two things she felt she could not achieve working only in a lab. But funding medical school presented a serious challenge. "I knew I didn't want to take on $150,000 in debt. Then I heard that I should learn more about the opportunities in military medicine," says Fewell. "Both my grandfathers served in World War II and their experience sparked my interest in exploring the Army." The Army's F. Edward Hebert Armed Forces Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP) and loan repayment helps defray the cost of medical school, and financial rewards can exceed what professionals in some areas will earn in the private sector. After speaking with many people who also took the military route, Fewell learned the Army would pay for her tuition and provide her with a living allowance. In exchange, she would give four years of service, with the option of staying on after she met the service requirement. The call to service and her patriotism were two very important, intangible reasons she joined the U.S. Army Medical Corps. Now a captain in the Army and chief of medical residents at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Fewell credits her success to all of the teachers, mentors and leaders who opened doors and helped her find the right career fit. Last year, Fewell traveled to Haiti with a group of volunteer military doctors after the earthquakes there devastated much of the country. Achieving a lifelong dream at 60 Not every career path is a straightforward one. In 1984, at age 34, Dr. Dore Gilbert, a dermatologist in Orange County, Calif., was in serious discussions with a recruiter about joining the Army Medical Corps.

But with young children and an established medical practice, he just couldn't sign on the dotted line. Instead, he channeled his desire to be of service by sitting on his local school board for many years. Years later, with all five of his kids out of college, his youngest joined the Marines and renewed Dr. Gilbert's interest in the Army. At age 60, he finally joined the Army Reserve.

He received the rank of lieutenant colonel because of his years of clinical practice and quickly began training to pass physical training requirements (27 sit-ups in two minutes, 18 push-ups in two minutes and running two miles in 19 minutes, 54 seconds). Surprising even himself, he surpassed each of these necessary benchmarks and began blogging about his experiences on an Army website, www.ArmyStrongStories.com.

After six months back home, serving one weekend a month, now it's off to Afghanistan. Gilbert's three-and-a-half month assignment overseas is to stabilize wounded Soldiers while they wait for surgeons. His experience as a dermatologist will also help Soldiers return to the field faster as they will no longer need to travel to Germany for skin treatments he can address on site. "It's a very high tempo base, and supporting the thousands of soldiers in the brigade is exactly what I want to be doing at this stage in my career. The Army Reserve allows me to gain these great new experiences and do something meaningful while knowing my practice is covered until I return home," says Gilbert. "And, according to the general, I am the oldest soldier in the brigade." Dynamic career, meaningful work An Army medical career offers a variety of financial incentives and benefits, including medical scholarships, loan repayment, internship programs and financial assistance to medical residents and postgraduate students. For example, students training to be Army physicians receive a monthly stipend of $2,088 to help cover living expenses during medical school. Employment opportunities for Medical Billing and Coding Specialists The decision to pursue a medical billing and coding career is a very smart one because this field is growing rapidly. Though the medical billing and coding salary in general is respectable, compensation varies based on factors like geographic area, type of employer, and specialization in a certain area of medicine or type of facility. This last aspect is particularly important as having knowledge of specialized billing and coding requirements is very valuable from a compensation perspective. Coders assign the appropriate diagnosis and treatment codes based on an analysis of patient charts. Billers assume the responsibility of getting the health care professional or facilities paid for services rendered. They enter relevant information into the software and ensure that the required documents are completed and approved. Medical billing is

sometimes considered a sub-specialty of medical coding, though the same person may perform both jobs. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor statistics, the average 2010-2011 salary ranges from $20,850 to $51,510. Salaries for the two occupations are considered together, but medical coders can expect their earnings to be toward the higher end as they usually must undergo additional training to obtain a certification. The federal government pays the highest wages of all industries offering employment in this field, paying an average annual salary of $45,120. Average salary in a hospital environment is $35,870 and physician offices pay $28,460 on average. The AAPC Medical Coding Salaries Survey is a good source of compensation data specific to medical coding. According to the latest
survey, certified medical coders earn an average of $45,404 and non-certified coders make $37,746 annually, on average. This salary differential of more than $7,600 illustrates that becoming certified can be worth the extra time and effort. Years of experience and size of employer both positively impact annual salary for medical coders and this also holds true for medical billers. One way that both medical billers and coders can specialize is by working within a certain type of facility. Mental health providers, nursing homes, dentists, hospice providers, and physical, speech, and occupational therapy clinics or providers are just a few of the specialized environments available. Each of these makes use of a distinctive set of medical billing diagnosis and treatment codes. Some billing specialists begin their careers by

working for a medical billing services company. This often exposes them to a variety of facilities so they can learn the ins and outs of billing and coding within each one. Workers use one or more types of software to create paper and electronic claims for submission to insurance companies. Medical billing and coding salary figures are expected to continue their positive trending. Employment in both fields is anticipated to grow much faster than the average for other occupations. Medical coders will continue to make a higher salary than billers due to the relevant certification being preferred by employers. However, employment in either area offers opportunities to increase earnings through factors like specialization in a certain type of facility or area of medicine. D&G Machine Products, Inc.: From its origins in the one-car garage behind David Gushee's house, D&G Machine Products, Inc. has grown and evolved into a team of more than 130 highly skilled people dedicated to providing customers with engineering excellence, product quality, and on-time performance. D&G Machine is an incredible example of business success! Focusing on what they do best, the company has grown to be recognized internationally for its quality products, which are used in applications around the globe. Founded in 1967 by David Gushee and Fred Loring, D&G is now a privately-held company incorporated under the laws of the State of Maine. Originally specializing in the production of custom tooling and dies for capital equipment manufacturers located in and around Portland, they added fabrication and welding during the first five years to complement our rapidly expanding machining capabilities. They also introduced field services to expand their capabilities. In response to the emerging high-tech market of the 1970s and the demand for more sophisticated design and engineering services, D&G soon added prototype design and engineering analysis to their credentials. Having outgrown the garage by 1972, D&G expanded its operations to the South Portland waterfront. By 1993, they had outgrown the South Portland facility and then moved to its present Westbrook location. In just five years, D&G had outgrown that 55,000 sq-ft facility, and added 35,000 additional square feet. And then again in 2001, they added a 12,000 sq-ft facility to house their light-manufacturing center.

To remain competitive, their first CNC vertical milling center went online in 1980, followed shortly by CNC turning and horizontal milling centers. In 1994, their first full 5 axis CNC machining center was added to a long list of hightech CNC machine tools. Later in the 1990s, they became certified to ISO9002, making its quality program recognized worldwide. As the company matured, it has effectively managed and controlled production growth through strict quality, production, cost control, and accounting systems. These systems have been integrated, giving managers accurate information when they need it. Today, D&G Machine is positioning itself for future growth by continuing to invest internally in the latest machine tool technologies such as its two brand new Mazak Integrex Mill Turn machining centers. Added in 2011, these two machining centers account for a $2 million investment. Additionally, D&G is looking to the future by expanding into and growing its Gorham fabrication facility into a state of the art "Welding Center of Excellence" by supplying diverse industries such as Power Generation and U.S military with high quality machined fabrications. Accepting the award was the company's president, Duane Gushee.

The 2011 Chamber Executive of the Year will be presented to Daniel Bookham, Executive Director of the Penobscot Bay Regional Chamber of Commerce. Each year this award recognizes a local chamber executive's hard work and dedication on efforts such as economic development initiatives, successful events, and an improved bottom line, as well as demonstrated involvement in collaborative ventures in support of local/regional chambers. In 2009, Daniel Bookham became the executive director of the Camden-Rockport-Lincolnville (CRL) Chamber of Commerce. From his first day

on the job, it was clear that he was a collaborator, a stabilizer, a diplomat, and a leader. In fact, his ability to manage change, to adapt, and to focus on results, as well as his resiliency as a leader, has turned the chamber around. Under Dan's leadership and through his example, the chamber staff has jelled as a team and turnover has ceased. Together, they have embraced new challenges and exceeded expectations. A 600+-member, $400,000 organization, the CRL Chamber had traditionally operated at a small deficit each year and utilized a line of credit in order to cover cash flow shortfalls. Shortly after his arrival, Dan was able to reorganize operating procedures, reduce expenses, and create a balanced budget. Last year his operating budget reflected income greater than expenses, yielding a positive cash flow and creating its first operating reserves. The CRL Chamber experienced a 20-percent increase in membership in the past two years, in a soft and declining economy. Further, no event during his tenure has lost money or failed to cover expenses. Perhaps most notably, Dan recently became executive director of the Penobscot Bay Regional Chamber of Commerce, which was created through a merger of the CRL Chamber and the Penobscot Bay Chamber in nearby Rockland-Thomaston. Throughout the processes, Dan showed tireless attention to the tiniest of organizational details, a commitment to building bridges, and a resolve for open communication. Dan's effective leadership style, creativity and successful results have created confidence and transformed the merger process. Dan felt strongly that the word "collaboration" should and would replace the word "competitor," and that any effort to regionalize should be a process, not an annual discussion. Combining these chambers into a single entity creates the fourth-largest chamber in the state of Maine, with a membership base of more than 1,000 members, and an operating budget approaching $1 million. Dan refuses to focus on the activities of only Camden, Rockport and Lincolnville. Instead, he continues to promote the region as the critical piece of expanding

The 2011 Chamber Volunteer of the Year will be presented to Floyd Rockholt of Eagle Hill Stamp & Coin in Presque Isle. This award honors an individual who is actively dedicated to the vitality of their local chamber. Nominated by Theresa Fowler of the Central Aroostook Chamber of Commerce, Floyd Rockholt has been in business in downtown Presque Isle for 28 years. He has been an active member of the Central Aroostook Chamber of Commerce, formerly the Presque Isle Area Chamber of Commerce, and has served multiple terms on its board of directors during those 28 years. Floyd not only is an adept business owner but at the same time is extremely generous with his time for others. His great sense of humor adds light to tense situations. He is never confrontational and always a professional. He has patience, integrity and has earned the respect of those who interact with him. A trusted and dedicated friend, Floyd thinks of others always before himself and can be found giving his time and energy to the many events, projects and committees connected to the Chamber throughout the year. Floyd's help, positive energy, and unselfish attitude ensure success at every event. The word "no" does not seem to be in his vocabulary! Floyd is arguably one of the Chamber's most active Directors and often represents the Chamber at members' ribbon-cutting exercises (sometimes up to a few per month). In addition to being the Treasurer

and responsible for financials, he also serves on the Executive Committee. Floyd has a very good business sense as evidenced by the success of his own business and brings much added value to meetings. Floyd plays by the rules and adheres to the by-laws, reminding the board regularly when it is not in compliance. He is fiscally responsible and we trust and respect him for this immensely. His longevity on the board serves to act as an anchor holding the group true to its values. This characteristic is invaluable to the newer members of the board. He is involved in several community organizations, in addition to the chamber of commerce, including Rotary, ACAP, and the Presque Isle Development Fund. In addition to his formal commitments to the various organizations, he willingly gives his time and advice to anyone who asks him. Floyd is very humble and shies away from the spotlight. When the Chamber and the community have to depend on help to get things done, they know they can count on Floyd being there! ––– About the Maine State Chamber of Commerce.
