Networking your way to opportunity

By Deana Barcz

We have been hearing about people who have been laid off from their jobs or choosing to change their careers. Who do you turn to when everyone you have known was at your previous job? Or what if you raised your children as a stayat-home parent and now you are looking for a volunteer opportunity or are re-entering the workforce? Building Your Network When you are seeking an ideal situation for yourself, networking could be your answer. One of the best ways I know to find a "perfect fit" is through networking and growing your circle of friends. Networking is not just for sales people anymore. It is an extremely valuable "tool" to know how to do and to put effort into. Networking is defined as "an interconnected system of things or people; an extended group of people with similar interests or concerns who interact and remain in informal contact for mutual assistance or support". When you become clear about what you want and you have a network of friends / associates to spread word through, it becomes easier to then get exactly what you want. By going outside of your usual routine, you will meet groups of new people and this is a valuable asset in life that you will always appreciate. Here are some tips to building your own successful network: 1. Focus Figure out where you want to focus

your efforts. Do you want to work for a large corporation or a small business? Would you like to volunteer for an organization that focuses on education or nutrition? 2. Reach Out Make a list of the people you know right now. Send them an email or give them a call asking for suggestions. Perhaps they have contacts who may be helpful to you. Maybe they belong to an organization, such as the Chamber, and can bring you as a guest. Or they may have ideas on where to spend your time and who to meet. Many opportunities come from the people who are already in your "circle". From there, you can grow your network. Within a short period of time, you can develop a large number of "leads" in your areas of interest. 3. Follow up Send a personal, handwritten thank you note to the new people you meet. It is so important to recognize the people who have helped you or may help you in the future. Not only will you stand out (regrettably, people forget to let others know how grateful they are and do not realize how this simple, "takes a few minutes" kind of effort means to the other person) and this will help that person remember you, keeping you in mind for new opportunities. 4. Stay Connected Once you find your ideal career / volunteer opportunity (and you will),

Financial tips for new graduates

(ARA) – If you are a new graduate, a college degree is just the first step in the new direction your life will be taking. A new career, potentially a new community to live in and a bit of cash in your pocket to spend - there are a lot of changes happening. College graduates carry an average of $25,250 in student loan debt, according to The Project on Student Debt, by The Institute for College Access and Success. Compiled with this debt are the potential expenses of job searching, moving, a professional wardrobe and a new car or bus pass. But receiving that first paycheck - and subsequent paychecks - can lead to bad financial management if not properly handled, says John Vaccaro, senior vice president from Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual). "New graduates should curb their urge to spend freely and think about their future goals to avoid financial setbacks like credit card debt and spending beyond their means," Vaccaro says. To help prevent new graduates from sinking deeper into the debt hole, and to look ahead to saving for retirement, Vaccaro has some financial planning tips to help grads get the most out of their new paychecks. • Develop a budget Almost half of Americans report they're living paycheck to paycheck, according to a 2011 CareerBuilder Survey. New graduates should create a budget, including all expenses from rent/house payments, to haircut costs and weekly groceries. Also include space for savings—if possible. Categorize each expense into a necessity category and a discretionary spending category, which will help highlight areas where expenses could be cut - if needed. For example, are payments for cable or

satellite TV necessary, or could you survive with free local TV and a less expensive subscription for wireless or mail delivery movie rentals? Setting up a budget can help a new graduate determine if more money from a paycheck can be put into savings. • Look into work benefits The first job is a learning experience for many in figuring out benefits and making them work. Recent graduates should take advantage of any employer offered retirement plans like 401(k)s as soon as they qualify. For younger new grads, the combination of time and potential for a retirement account to grow are powerful in planning for retirement down the road. Health, life and disability income insurance are also good benefit options to research. If your company doesn't offer these kinds of benefits, consider obtaining coverage independently. • Pay off the right debts first Debt can occur in a lot of different forms for new graduates. Car payments, student loans, mortgages and credit card accumulations are a few of the more common forms of debt. It's a good idea to pay off those debts that have the highest interest rates and are not tax deductible first. Ideally, a person should have enough savings on hand to pay off a short term debt, like credit card purchases, on a monthly basis. • Rein in spending habits Look yourself in the mirror and identify your spending habits. If you like to impulse buy, try forcing yourself to delay impulse purchases by 24 hours. Also determine if your spending habits are influenced in any way by emotional factors or peer pressure. Once these habits are identified, it's easier to establish ways to circumvent bad financial decisions.

Why your

SOCIAL MEDIA HABITS are just as important as what's on your resume (ARA) – You may have spent hours making sure you are using just the right action verbs in your resume, and crafted the perfect cover letter to catch the attention of your future employer, but if you haven't spent the time to clean up what's on your Facebook page, all that work could be for naught. Not only do social media sites like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn allow you to connect and network as you search for a job, but they give you a platform to sell yourself – or shame yourself – to future employers. Volunteers Needed for Special 15th Anniversary TD Beach to Beacon 10K Road Race Positions available in parking, water, Kid’s Fun Run and race recycling program at August 4 event in Cape Elizabeth craggy shores of Cape Elizabeth, said Volunteer Coordinator Maya Cohen of Cape Elizabeth. New and returning volunteers are encouraged to sign up soon at www.beach2beacon.org/VOLUNT EER to have access to the widest selection of openings.

CAPE ELIZABETH, Maine – For those not running in the TD Beach to Beacon 10K, the best way to be a part of one of the country’s most beloved road races is to volunteer at the event. This year marks the special 15th anniversary race, making it the perfect time to join in the fun and be a part of the festivities for the Saturday, Aug. 4, race along the

“There’s a sense of satisfaction that our volunteers feel in knowing that they play such a key role in making this race the prestigious, well-run event that it is, year after year,” said Cohen. “We always need more volunteers and we’re always looking for new faces to get involved.” Race organizers show their appreciation in a variety of ways. Volunteers receive a commemorative tech T-shirt and are invited to a party in a coastal Cape Elizabeth locale, organized exclusively for them.

Helping out also brings many volunteers close to the action and excitement, such as providing water to the elite runners, assisting with finish line security or helping organize the Kid’s Fun Run the night before the race. The TD Beach to Beacon 10K needs more than 800 volunteers in total each year to ensure a smooth operation and help create the safe, festive atmosphere that makes the event so special for recreational runners and elite athletes alike. In addition to parking and water stations, volunteers help organize and staff many aspects of the event, including registration for two days prior to the race, course set up and break down, baggage assistance, recycling and in the medical tent. “Our volunteers really are the backbone of this race and I can’t tell you how much we appreciate their efforts,” said Race Director Dave

McGillivray of DMSE Sports, who also directs 30 other races throughout the U.S., including the BAA Boston Marathon, Run Gloucester! 7-Mile Road Race and the New Balance Falmouth Road
