Creating new “Pathways to Prosperity for Maine high school students AUGUSTA, ME – Of Maine’s 12,000 public high school students who receive their diplomas this month, 61 percent are expected to enroll in college. Yet, by the time they reach their mid-twenties, barely 38 percent will have earned a college degree. In February 2011 the Pathways to Prosperity Project at the Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE) released a report challenging our country’s excessive focus on the idea that a four-year degree is the

only pathway to success in the workforce. The report argues that we need to create additional pathways that combine rigorous academics with strong technical education to equip the majority of young people with the skills and credentials to succeed in our increasingly challenging labor market. Pathways to Prosperity: Meeting the Challenge of Preparing Young Americans for the 21st Century hit a nerve among employers, educators, and state officials struggling with high unemployment rates, perceived skills mismatches,

and the devastating effect of the financial crisis on young people. The enormous interest generated by the Pathways report has led to the launch of the Pathways to Prosperity Network, a collaboration between HGSE, Jobs for the Future (JFF) and seven states—including Maine. This network is committed to ensuring that many more young people complete high school, attain a valuable postsecondary credential, and begin a career while leaving open the prospect of further education.

Maine Governor Paul LePage said, “In shaping a responsive workforce development system, I remain convinced that well-defined career pathways for all young people are essential to building a qualified workforce for all Maine industries. To accomplish this goal in Maine, Jobs for Maine’s Graduates (JMG) will lead a coalition of key public and private sector leaders, including employers and educators, who are committed to building a variety of career pathways that will link high

Craig Larrabee, President& CEO of JMG said, “There is no single entity – not the public school system, nor the business community that can do this work alone. By combining the resources of everyone who has a stake in the future of Maine’s students and Maine’s economy, we can ensure that our young people are prepared to meet the demands of today’s job market.â€? The work will initially focus on the manufacturing labor market in Maine, however, the long-term goal is to create a statewide system of career pathways that can serve a majority of students. After years of decline, jobs in the manufacturing industry in Maine are on the rise. Lisa Martin, Executive Director of the Manufacturers Association of Maine, says, “We are thrilled to be partnering with such a great program as JMG! The Pathways to Prosperity program will increase our outreach to young people for opportunities in manufacturing and will assist in our efforts to market and place students in great careers.â€? Other states that have joined the Pathways to Prosperity Network are Illinois, Massachusetts, Missouri, North Carolina and Tennessee. The Pathways to Prosperity framework includes the following elements of a pathways system: • Employers committed to providing learning opportunities in the workplace and supporting the transition of young people into the labor market. • Career pathways with clear structures, timelines, costs, and requirements linking and integrating high school and community college curriculum and aligning both with labor market needs. • An early and sustained career information and advising system

strong enough to enable students and families to make informed choices about educational career paths.

How to evaluate your resume’s spelling and grammar Resume blunders abound! A quick internet search reveals funniest bloopers such as "renovating a horse" and having an affinity for "cooking Chinese and Italians"! Although these might tickle funny bones in a comedy act, they are unlikely to impress a recruiter. He or she will simply go on to the next applicant - there simply isn't the time to give this unprofessional resume a second thought! Nor is there the need; after all, there are many more to choose from. Such errors would never have been found by spell-check as these do not include spelling mistakes. These errors indicate the need to proof-read. Here are a few ideas for perfecting resume-specific spelling and grammar. Spelling There is no excuse for spelling "director" as "dirctor," as spell-check will catch this typo with a squiggly red underline. But do watch words such as "manager," which is often typed "manger," and would not be caught by spell-check.

by word, out loud, or from end to beginning, to catch words such as mold-mould, than-then, premierpremiere, manager-manger, etc. Numbers In proper writing, numbers from zero to nine are written out, and from 10 on up, are in numerical form. However, in resumes you may choose to use numbers from "0" and on, in order to save space. Whichever you choose, stick to one format throughout your document. There's one more reason to use the actual numbers: these pop off the page for quick reading, and also save a bit of space, an important consideration when making the most of valuable resume "real-estate." Capitalization Capitalization rules are complex, and thus this is an area of confusion. A few common rules to follow: • Capitalize the first word in a sentence. • Capitalize proper nouns, i.e. names of people, places, months, and famous buildings. • Capitalize terms that are important to you and your audience. In a cover

letter you might write "ABC's search for an Administrative Assistant came to my attention at last night's Administrative Professional networking meeting," and in an email you might write "hey mom, I'm interested in the administrative assistant position with ABC." • Do not capitalize most titles. For example, "I worked closely with the company's vice president of marketing... " although you would write "I spoke with the President of the United States on occasion." And the President's title is the only one you must capitalize.

Composed committee meeting minutes and distributing them to committee members.

Correct: Composed minutes for two corporatelevel committee meetings, and distributed minutes to executive-level members. Also, posted minutes on corporate intranet.

And that's a good point to note: spelling and grammar are but humble beginnings for a resume that has influence. At the very least it will stop your reader from tossing your resume into the "absolutely not" pile! But to make it to the "without a doubt" shortlist, will take much more than perfect spelling and good grammar.

Writing in bullets does not yet have hard and fast rules. I like to stick to this format: • when launching a bullet in lower case letter, I refrain from adding punctuation at the end • When launching the bullet with a capitalization, I add a period at the end.

Account Executives build and maintain strong relationships with customers over the phone, face-to-face, at business-to-business events, and online. This position will be responsible for monthly online revenue goals and weekly print goals.

Another aspect of parallelism relates to sentence structured. Here is an example:

therefore prepared for a certain structure.

• DON'T CAPITALIZE EVERYTHING. It means you are shouting, and if used extensively, is difficult to read.

Leave the semi-colons and colons for experts, and stick to commas and periods only. And there is no need for exclamation marks in your resume!!!! as although they do "scream," they do not scream "professionalism."

Think of parallelism as deliberate repetition, as in bulleted formats, a predictable mix of paragraph and bullets, the use of one font for all headings and another for content, and so on. Parallelism also refers to the use of verbs to launch bullets. Using a string of strong verbs makes it easier for your reader to skim through. That's because the brain expects, and is

Need a career change? Nursing needs you (ARA) – Registered nursing - already the largest health care occupation with 2.7 million jobs - is on a massive growth trajectory. Employment of registered nurses (RNs) is expected to increase by 26 percent by 2020 and nursing was recently ranked No. 1 in the U.S. News and World Report's "Best Jobs" list for 2012.

Stephanie Augustin, 27, of Miramar, Fla., can attest to the nursing profession's appeal. After earning a bachelor's degree in biology and a

master's degree in reading education, Augustin worked as a fifth-grade science teacher. But various factors made her question her job stability as a new teacher, including her school's budget cuts and new salary regulations. Deciding to seek a new career opportunity, Augustin left her position as an elementary teacher to pursue nursing, enrolling in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree program at Chamberlain College of Nursing. As a full-time student, Augustin will take three years to complete the program, with flexible online classes, which allow her to work as a tutor while enrolled in school. "I'm confident in my decision to transition to a more in-demand career," says Augustin. "Nursing provides an opportunity for me to renew each patient's sense of hope and trust in the health care process, allowing me to feel better as an individual by lending a helping hand during my patient's time of need. "It's still in my heart to teach," she adds, "but I'd rather teach people

how to stay healthy." The nursing profession can offer many qualities that job-seekers and career-changers find attractive, such as job stability, flexibility and career advancement opportunities. Additionally, nursing is a wellrespected field and has been named the most trusted profession for 11 of the last 12 years, according to the annual Gallup Poll survey. "Many job-seekers and careerchangers are looking for a profession that is not only ripe with opportunity but also a personally rewarding livelihood," says Michelle Mercurio, national manager of career services at Chamberlain College of Nursing. "Although nursing can be challenging, nurses have the opportunity to really make a positive impact in a patient's life, allowing the nurses to give personally and feel satisfied at the end of the day knowing they made a difference." Several different academic paths can lead to a nursing career, but many employers prefer to hire nurses who have a BSN degree rather than an associate degree in nursing. Research

shows that more positive patient outcomes occur when nurses are prepared at the baccalaureate level. One group of researchers found that every 10 percent increase in the proportion of BSN nurses on the hospital staff was associated with a 4 percent decrease in the risk of death. Recognizing the increased need for more highly educated nurses, many nursing schools now offer accelerated BSN degree programs. Chamberlain, for example, enables students like Augustin to earn their BSN degree in as few as three years of year-round study, allowing them to enter the workforce sooner than their peers. In addition, students can earn advanced degrees, including a master of science in nursing with a specialization in the in-demand areas of nursing education, executive leadership or the high-tech discipline of nursing informatics. The high level of fulfillment provided by the nursing profession, combined with job stability, flexibility and employment and advancement opportunities, make it a rewarding lifelong career.
