Enhancing your career can depend on how ready you are to take advantage of opportunity when it presents itself. That means that you need to be ready to introduce yourself quickly to people you might run into casually in the office or in other business settings. Mike Myatt, in the article “How's your elevator pitch?” on the Ezine Articles Web site, says that he has several versions of his own introduction prepared depending on audience, environment and need.

AUGUSTA – The Finance Authority of Maine (FAME) announced on June 29 that various fees within the NextGen College Investing Plan® (NextGen) will be reduced. Effective June 29, 2012, total annual asset-based fees will be reduced in most portfolios in the Client Direct (self-directed) Series. Also, total annual asset-based fees will be reduced in all unit classes in the Client Select (advisor-sold) Series. In addition, initial sales charges on A Unit class purchases will be reduced for certain asset classes. These and other changes can be reviewed in more detail in the Supplements dated June 29, 2012 to the Client Direct Series and Client Select Series Program Descriptions. Most portfolio fees will be reduced between four and eleven basis points. Fees are being reduced up to eleven basis points in the actively available A and C Unit Classes in the Client Select Series. The Account Maintenance Fee within the Client Direct Series has been eliminated. For a complete list of changes to the various portfolios, please visit FAME’s Website at: www.famemaine.com/NextGenLan ding.aspx “We are pleased to be reducing fees within NextGen,” stated FAME Chief Executive Officer Beth Bordowitz. “We are able to offer these enhancements due to the program’s success, and we’re grateful to Merrill Lynch, the Program Manager, for their cooperation in reducing their fees. It is important for the program to remain competitive with other Section 529 plans around the nation while offering a variety of choices for investors. FAME and its Advisory Committee on College Savings, which is chaired by the State Treasurer, continually evaluate NextGen to identify opportunities to enhance and improve

the plan.” NextGen is one of the largest Section 529 college savings programs in the country, with almost $6 billion in assets as of May 31, 2012. It was created by the Maine Legislature in 1999 as a qualified tuition program under Section 529 of the Internal Revenue Code. NextGen is a taxadvantaged investing program of the Finance Authority of Maine designed to help families prepare for qualified higher education expenses. Merrill Lynch is the program manager and underwriter of the plan. Anyone at least age 18 can open an account, regardless of income or residency, and assets can be used at any accredited U.S. post-secondary institution. Matching grants are available to eligible accounts. FAME is a quasi-independent state agency that provides innovative financial solutions to help Maine citizens pursue businesses and educational opportunities. To learn more about FAME, please visit www.famemaine.com. NextGen is a Section 529 plan administered by the Finance Authority of Maine (FAME). Before you invest in NextGen, request a NextGen Program Description from your Maine bank or financial advisor, or call FAME at 1-800-228-3734 and read it carefully. The Program Description contains more complete information, including investment objectives, charges, expenses and risks of investing in NextGen, which you should carefully consider before investing. You also should consider whether your home state or your designated beneficiary’s home state offers any state tax or other benefits that are only available for investments in such state’s 529 plan. Merrill Lynch, Pierce, Fenner & Smith Incorporated, a registered brokerdealer, member SIPC, is the program manager and underwriter.

Myatt says that a good introduction imbues you with credibility and confidence and allows you to tell others what you do and how you are working toward eliminating fears the company has, eradicating painful situations the company faces, or meeting needs the company has pinpointed for itself. And Myatt says you should be able to do this in 50 words or less. So, for instance, when you run into a manager, you could introduce yourself by saying: “My name is Jim Johnson. I'm a marketing representative. I specialize in making sure new clients are comfortable in their knowledge about our services before they commit their money to us. And this year, I'm working toward the goal of 100 percent client satisfaction.” Once you have an introduction that you like, work to perfect it. Practice it – and then use it when the opportunity arises.

Preparing for small moments can open doors to a bigger future.

Staying positive can be hard in today's world, but here's one small way to work a little positivity in your daily routine. Each day, before you sit down to work, grab a small piece of paper and write a nice thought down about someone you work with. Later, when you see that person, work your positive thought into your conversation. It's a small way of making the world just a little nicer, and it just takes a minute to plan and a short time to deliver.

It's nerve-wracking enough to get through an interview, but one can agree that waiting for the result proves even more aggravating. Even if you come out of a potential employer's office feeling confident that you nailed it, there's still a period of uncertainty that stretches with each passing the day the phone does not ring. You know HR is interviewing other people and needs to collect a fair amount of candidates before they can make an informed decision. Also, you continue to look for other open positions. How do you deal with the days when nobody is calling you?

the team to see what worked and what didn't. You won't be able to record your interview, but if you're worried about your appearance and performance you can sit with a friend and recap. A new pair of eyes may point out tics and gestures that could turn off employers. 4) Rethink your wardrobe. You dress your best when you meet potential employers, but you should also consider that colors and style vary depending on the job. Rule of thumb among employment experts is to wear a dark neutral color - black or navy blue - in a conservative style.

Anxiety during a job search is perfectly normal. You feel pressured to find a good job in order to relieve financial burdens, and the sooner you are hired somewhere the better. This time between the interview and the call should be invested well in improving your profile, so that subsequent interviews - if necessary may result in a faster response. Not only that, but staying busy can help ease the nerves as you wait for employers to contact you. Here are a few things you can do in between interviews to help improve your position in the eyes of those who hire: 1) Revise your resume. Take a look at your job history and skills. You may want to play up certain points and achievements that will impress an employer. If you have learned anything new, like a computer language of coding skill, include in a new version before sending it out with your applications. 2) Change up your references. It's great to have two or three people on whom you can always rely for a good word. Don't stop there, however. Try to get a few people "on reserve" who may offer a more unique picture of you as a worker. 3) Watch the reel. After football games, coaches often watch film of

Changes to your presentation, attitude, and style can make a difference after the interview. Evaluate how an employer sees you, and improve upon that image to get the phones ringing.

The new job arena is one of instability and uncertainty. Are you drifting along in your job at the mercy of the economic waves? Staying on top of your career and your résumé has never been so important. The way to manage your career in an unpredictable environment is by being proactive. development called "Planned Happenstance". It involves using what you learn along your life path in various experiences to direct your career future. Planned happenstance is not to be confused with lack of planning. Many people are working in jobs they never expected to have because various life circumstances and lack of planning landed them there. For example, I don't hear children say, "I want to be a grocery store manager when I grow up," but there are plenty of grocery store managers out there. They may have started as cashiers and perhaps lacking direction or completion of a

higher education, simply worked their way up over a number of years. Planned happenstance is having a general or specific direction, guided by learning from activities over time. However, it seems traditional career planning combined with planned happenstance may be the best proactive choice of action. 1. The first step in planning is to update your resumé. That way, if an opportunity arises, you are prepared. Also, you really need to complete a profile on LinkedIn, the most used new tool by recruiters. The website is user-

Personal Brand and the Resume

Writing a Winning

Resume Resume Differentiation In today's competitive job market, it's essential to distinguish yourself from all the other candidates out there, whether they are strong or weak, you've got to stand out from the pack. One of the most effective strategies for differentiating yourself is in crafting a personal brand message. Personal Brand Message

Determining Your Value Proposition

Your personal brand simply communicates what makes you special to a prospective employer. The brand statement needs to be clear and concise. Your audience should be able to read it in 5 seconds or less. This will help them to understand it and retain it.

By Stephen Van Vreede

Value in Your Brand One of the core elements in developing your brand is in the value you offer. Too many job seekers and resume writers focus on things like years of experience, education or certifications, and soft skills. The problem is that there is little that's unique about any of these things. For example, many candidates have 10-plus years of experience, a Bachelor's degree, and are dedicated and hard-working. No, those things are nice, but not always valuable to an employer. Defining Value So how do you determine your value? Start by thinking about the things you have done that others weren't able to do. Consider the following examples: • As a developer, you may have been able to solve a software defect that had been plaguing an enterprise application for years. • As a project manager, you were brought in to take over failing projects and consistently got the team in order to meet the scope, milestones, and deliverables of the project.

• As a CIO, you were able to put together a new IT organizational model that helped to dramatically improve service delivery with a reduced cost structure.

“Too many job seekers and resume writers focus on things like years of experience, education or certifications, and soft skills. The problem is that there is little that's unique about any of these things.”

in the job search when they brand themselves, specifically in this manner. The concern is that it limits their opportunities. Actually, what it really does is create a focused image of who they are and what they truly offer. It makes them something other than a commodity, which is important. Remember, commodity prices are set by the market demand and all are priced at the same level because all the products are the same. This approach tells the company that you're not the same at all. You're unique. You're valuable. You can command a higher compensation because you're worth it.

The Value Proposition All these things create value. In addition, they can all be used as a foundation for creating a strong value proposition. The developer can highlight their ability to solve intractable problems impacting global operations. The project manager can brand themselves as a project turnaround specialist. The CIO can position themselves as a change management and business transformation leader. Many candidates worry about being pigeon-holed

Happenstance" into your career path. Broadening your horizons is a good way to begin. This is achieved through engaging in interesting, exploratory, and beneficial career and personal growth activities such as ongoing learning opportunities, participation in industry associations, volunteer work, or other activities. Think about what your passions are and special skills in which you excel. Write possible activities on a separate sheet of paper. Then, make branches off your timeline with possible areas from which you may consider deviating and what alternatives you might consider. Deviations could be alternative positions, careers, and/or industries. Also, consider self-employment or starting your own business. 4. Another critical piece of planned happenstance is keeping in contact with your network of family, friends, acquaintances, and colleagues. You never know when a contact may learn about an opportunity which piques your interest. Research shows that 60-80% of jobs are never advertised and are filled through networking. Interestingly, most jobs obtained through networking are through "weak connections". Weak connections are people to whom you do not have close or strong ties. For example, weak connections could be

long lost classmates, casual acquaintances, former co-workers, or distant relatives. Be a network resource for those people as well, and they are more likely to think of you when hearing about an opportunity. As our careers progress through the years, life happens as well, throwing roadblocks, detours, and potholes in our paths. It's how we plan for and handle unplanned issues that determines how well we develop meaningful careers in the midst of it all. Planning for experiences that will keep you going in the direction you desire and incorporating what you learn into your career plan is the basis of planned happenstance. Plan, experience, adapt, and excel.
