Make the Most of Attending a BY ANGELA M. HIGLEY
Job Fairs are excellent places to land jobs, because employers are there specifically to line up candidates for interviews, and some even interview and hire on-the-spot. While Job Fairs can be overwhelming with many people waiting to see the same employer, the pressure of on-the-spot interviewing, noise and sometimes confusion, they are often a great tool and a good way to meet company representatives face-to-face. Before you go, review some tips on participating, which will help make your Career Fair experience a positive one. Resumes Before the Job Fair, do a little research to find out how many companies are going to be on site. Plan to take enough resumes for all the companies you know you’re interested in, and at least one resume for every two companies that you’re not as interested in. While you may think that you are indifferent in a certain company, the display or a chat with a company representative may change your mind. Be sure that your resume is current and accurate. Have someone proofread them before you make copies! Typos and other errors can be considered sloppiness on your part and your resume quickly “screened out” because of it. Finally, don’t be afraid to distribute your resume to company representatives, that’s what you are there for! Prepare a “One-Minute Commercial” Your “One-Minute Commercial” should be a compilation, summarized, of your resume and cover letter. It should be a brief but descriptive statement about your abilities and skills as well as what you’re looking for in a new job. It is very much like your objective statement. First, illustrate the important details that support your qualifications for the position. This is your chance to let the company representative know why you are uniquely suited for the position you are seeking. Brevity, specificity and perhaps most importantly relativity are the keys!

Graduating? Career trends job-seeking students should know (ARA) – Students graduating from college this year should expect better job opportunities and salaries than graduates from recent history, but that doesn't mean new graduates will have an easy time finding employment. Competition will still be fierce with hundreds of applications submitted for jobs in many industries, both from new graduates and former graduates still looking for work. If you're planning on graduating soon and seeking career opportunities, here are some employment trends to be aware of to stay on top of the career market: • First, expect to change jobs numerous times in your career. In today's career world, job stability does not always equal job security. Employees change jobs about every five years, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Reasons differ for many people, but could be due to changes in the industry, restructuring in the company or because of lack of job growth within one company. "The U.S. economy is fundamentally changing, and employees can no longer expect to work their way up the company ladder," says Brad Kuchenreuther, campus president at Everest College-Vancouver. • Second, know where the jobs are. "Our nation is experiencing huge demographic and economic changes, which are creating major shifts in the types of jobs available today," says Mary Durall-Dupree, academic dean Everest CollegeVancouver. "Students should prepare themselves for a changing
The origin of our word panic is derived from the Greek god Pan. According to the Merriam-Webster New Book of Word Histories, this lusty and musically gifted god was also known for giving great shouts that instilled fear into giants as they battled the gods. Pan was worshipped in Athens because it was believed that he instilled fear into the hearts of the Persians causing them to flee the Battle of Marathon. And that is where we get our word and idea of panic-any sudden and groundless fear.
job market." Current careers in need of employees include information technology, engineers, and accounting and finance, according to Fortune 500 magazine. "One of the fastest growing sectors in the coming decade will be the health care sector," says Kuchenreuther. The health care industry is anticipated to see fast growth due to the baby boomer generation getting older and retiring from these positions, as well as needing more health care services themselves as they age. • Third, consider going back to school for additional career training. Today's job market requires that employees keep their skills current, and as a result, more and more adults are going back to school. "Students come to us to keep their skills up-to-date or get the credentials they need to advance in their careers," says Durall-Dupree. "They find that it is increasingly necessary in today's changing job market." Careers that require education higher than a Bachelor's degree are expected to have the fastest employment growth by 2020, according to the BLS. But several occupations in the medical field and the marketing industry which require associate or bachelor's degrees are also projected to grow rapidly through 2020. Going back to school for additional training, or earning a degree while already in the job are options for employees.

One of your direct reports openly criticizes you in front of a group of some of your other direct reports. And the truth is you'd just like to smack the smart-mouth for embarrassing you. But here's something leaders have to learn: how to take criticism. It is absolutely essential for you to be able to tolerate criticism if you are going to be an effective leader, according to leadership communications consultant John Baldoni in an article titled “Learning how to accept criticism,â€? in Darwin magazine. But what exactly does this elusive phrase mean, “being able to accept criticism.â€? One thing a leader has to understand is that he or she needs honest communication. And a lot of times, criticism can be just that. So, if for no other reason than self-preservation, you will want to encourage the kind of environment where someone in a subordinate position feels comfortable giving criticism. Here are some of Baldoni's suggestions for how to take criticism well: • You've got to be able to roll with the punches. The message this will send out is that you are allowing people to disagree with you. And even though you may not be aware of how much you need this – probably some day it will become very clear to you just how important this is. Listen to what your critics have to say and if you feel it's necessary you can defend yourself. But here's the key: Don't under any circumstance try to discredit your opponent.
The County of Cumberland encourages diversity in its workforce. We are an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer.

• Take a deep breath and thank the person who criticizes you. (This is to be a genuine thanking, by the way.) Why are you thanking the person who is criticizing you? It's helpful to think of it in this way-it took courage for that person to speak his mind to someone who is most likely more powerful than he or she is. Whatever you do, don't go on a defensive attack. Everyone in the office will remember it forever. What you're saying when you react negatively: No criticism allowed here. And, unlucky you, that will be the last time you are ever likely to hear the truth from the people who work for you. And that is a dangerous position in which to put yourself.

The Importance of Space By Lisa K. McDonald, Career Polish, Inc. You would think a person that has four dogs – three of whom seem to think they are lap dogs – would not have space issues; but you would think wrong. I'm funny about my space; the thing is I like my own space. When my son moved out I ripped up the carpeting myself and repainted the entire room a bright, bright, spring green with white and purple accents. Does this tell you anything? I've always identified with the KT Oslin song "Live Close By, Visit Often". I like my space. But space is also important within your space. Having a decluttered environment helps calm your mind and allows you to appreciate the items you have selected to remain within your space. In decorating having appropriate space actually accentuates the pieces you want to show off. In networking personal space is sometimes neglected and can stop a connection before it even gets the opportunity to begin. I have come to accept that circumstances do not always allow for the appropriate allotment of personal space. However, it can be a tricky thing entering into someone's personal space - it can come across as rude or intrusive; it can be uncomfortable for the other party or worse your intentions could be misread. Respecting personal space is important. Space is a good thing. Too often I see a total disregard for space on resumes. It seems to go in extremes—either there is no white space or there is too much. The question then becomes what is the right amount of white space in a resume. Let's start with margins. The general rule is acceptable margin settings are between.5 inch and 1 inch equally around the page - it gives balance. Sometimes you can fudge a little and have.5 inch top and bottom and.75 on the sides. Just make sure there is a nice balance. Within the resume is where it can get complicated. First – the font should normally be 11 or 12 point font, which is easiest for the reader. Using a 10 point font makes the words too small and the reader might have to strain to read what you have presented. Any larger and it will look like you are trying to take up space with a larger font because you do not have any valuable content to fill the page. Letterhead and headings should utilize a larger font - this can normally be 13 or 15 font; something that will make it stand out a bit more. Of course using bold, borders, italics etc will also help set these items apart. They should be set apart which means there should be at least a blank line before and after a heading. I normally do not recommend a space in between bullet points because it spaces it out a bit too much; remember your bullet points should not take three lines to begin with so the additional space is unnecessary. There should be space between each position to create a visual break for the reader. Sometimes people get so wrapped up in "it has
to be one page" that they cram everything on one page. This actually does more harm than good. The type is too small, the margins are too wide and there is not enough white space for the eyes to relax and take a break while reading. By the way – one page or two seems to be a big debate. When I ask hiring managers, recruiters and HR professionals about their preference the overwhelming response is basically they don't care - as long as the information they are looking for is there, easy to find and read. People do have personal preferences but I can guarantee you that even if they prefer a one page resume if your squeeze a two page resume down to one page they are not going to be very pleased to read it. One way to see if you do not have enough white space is when looking at your resume on your computer minimize the size of the document to about 45 percent so you can see the entire document at one time. Do not try to read what you wrote just get a feel for the visual. Listen to your gut and it will let you know if more space is needed. If you have the problem of too much space then perhaps it is a content issue. Go back to each position and start listing out every single thing that you did for that position; this will help the ideas start to flow. Once you have done this then you can go back and begin to identify skills that you utilized when performing your duties. For example if you utilized problemsolving, conflict resolution, analytical, communication, organization or any other number of skills this is the time to write those down along with the duty. Then you can go back and add to
your descriptions including not only the duty, but the skills used and the value that was added by you performing the task. When writing your resume respect yourself enough to give appropriate attention to the important items by surrounding them with white space which will naturally bring the readers attention to those items. Also, respect the reader in utilizing enough white space in order that it becomes a document they want to read rather than must read. We are all naturally drawn to things that attract us. When I was a kid my mom used to take us to the library every week. I remember opening books and flipping through and deciding if I was going to take it home or not based solely on the "feel". If the pages were edge to edge words packed in then that one got returned to the shelf. If the words were not as cramped, there was breaks or pictures or anything more visually attractive then that was the book I chose. We really have not changed in our first instincts as to what we want to read. If I am given a resume that has very little white space I unconsciously have a negative reaction - it looks like a pain to read so therefore I am already starting off without reading one word with a negative attitude. When in doubt, print off your resume and ask a friend to look at it - do not give it to them to read, just hold it and ask them how it looks. Then watch their reactions - don't just listen to them say, "Fine". You can gauge the appropriateness of your white space based on their initial reaction. The content is the most important element of your resume - it should be your main focus. The look and feel
can be modified after you have created a solid sales statement for yourself. Once you have done that then the fun begins - play a little with fonts, margins, headings - after all this is your personal sales statement so you should like the way it looks! Feeling A study by University of Virginia has found overwhelming evidence that regular exercise can play a significant role in increasing energy levels and reducing fatigue. The researchers analyzed 70 previous exercise trials to assess whether exercise reduced fatigue. Originally the studies had looked at whether exercise helped prevent or improve symptoms of conditions such as heart disease, diabetes and obesity. “More than 90 percent of the studies showed the same thing: Sedentary people
who completed a regular exercise program reported improved fatigue compared to groups that did not exercise,” says Patrick OʼConnor, co-director of the University of Georgia exercise psychology laboratory. “A lot of times when people are fatigued the last thing they want to do is exercise. But if youʼre physically inactive and fatigued, being just a little more active will help.” The researchers found in their analysis that nearly every group, whether it was healthy adults, cancer patients or people with chronic conditions such as diabetes or heart disease, benefited from exercise.
And though it may seem counterintuitive that expending energy will give you more energy, study after study told the same story. “We live in a society thatʼs always looking for the next sports drink, energy bar or cup of coffee that will give them the extra edge to get through the day,” Tom Puetz, the lead author of the study, says. “But it may be that lacing up your tennis shoes and getting out there and doing some physical activity every morning can provide that spark of energy that people are looking for.”

Many Flags/One Campus Model Receives Endorsement of Maine State Workforce Investment Board (SWIB) Workforce Development leaders urge Governor LePage to include the Many Flags/One Campus project in his plans for education reform and economic development. At its April meeting, the Maine State Workforce Investment Board voted unanimously to endorse the Many Flags/One Campus concept and to urge Governor LePage to move the project forward as a part of his education reform and economic development strategies for Maine. The members of the State Workforce Investment Board (SWIB) are appointed by the Governor to lead the effort to create a worldclass workforce development system in Maine. Fred Webber, the Chair of the State Workforce Investment Board said, “The Many Flags/One Campus model of collaboration among business, secondary and post secondary education and industry led technical training is exactly want we need in Maine. The specific resolution passed by the State Workforce Investment Board states: The SWIB supports the Many Flags/One Campus model for industry directed workforce training and seamlessly integrated secondary and post secondary education – and we urge the Governor to include the innovative Many Flags model as a part of his education reform and economic development strategies for Maine. Robert Winglass, Commissioner of the Department of Labor said, “The Many Flags model is the kind of innovative, public–private approach that is needed in Maine so we can be truly competitive in the 21st Century global economy. Steve Pound, Associate Director for Workforce Development, Cianbro Institute, Cianbro Companies, and also a member of the State Workforce Investment Board added, “Maine will benefit from an integrated model for education and workforce development. Many Flags has the potential to be a model that can be replicated statewide as we bring public education and private business training approaches together.
The State Workforce Investment Board (SWIB) is made up of over 30 business leaders, career and technical education experts, workforce training specialists, University of Maine System and Maine Community College leaders, as well as other economic and community development public officials. Alan Hinsey, Executive Director of the Many Flags/One Campus Foundation noted, “We want to thank the Workforce Board for its endorsement of Many Flags/One Campus. Strong support like this from leaders in education, workforce development and the private sector is critical if the Many Flags approach is to become a reality and a model for the state.â€? Many Flags/One Campus is a new approach for a seamlessly integrated secondary and postsecondary education system in Maine. This is a unique concept that promotes educational excellence and administrative efficiency by integrating, both physically and virtually, the programs, students, faculty, staff, classrooms, labs, and technological infrastructure of: • A network of Regional High Schools; • A State-of-the-art Career &Tech Education Center; • A Higher Education Center (course and degrees offered by Maine Community College and University of Maine System); • And Industry Training and R&D Centers of Excellence. The Many Flags/One Campus Foundation, www.manyflags.org, is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization formed in 2010 to help advance the innovative Many Flags/One Campus model. The Foundation is comprised of local Midcoast Maine residents who wish to increase awareness of the Many Flags model and to raise private funds and secure grants that will help the Many Flags/One Campus concept become a reality.

Want a Better
Career? Everyone wants to be successful in the workplace, but sometimes it's hard to figure out how to get your career moving in the right direction. Follow these five tips to ensure that you build skills and start movement to where you want to be.
• Start from where you are - Make every effort to build your skills in your current job so that if and when you make a move or go for a promotion, you have something to take with you or show. It's usually better to go step by step, rather than hope for a big promotion someday. Focus on doing the best possible job you can now, and plan future career moves carefully. • Sharpen your computer skills - Today, it really doesn't matter what your job is - at some point you will probably need to bee proficient in using a computer. Try to learn everything you can so that you are more marketable. • Develop a learning attitude - Learning in your career should never come to a standstill. Commit yourself to a lifetime of workplace learning and it will pay off nicely. • Learn to work well with others - In almost every job, you will be asked to work with others. • Network - Always talk to others in your industry or profession. This will help you to know what skills you need and keep you on top of job opportunities.
