SHRM Kicks Off 7th Annual “Best Places to Work in Maine” PORTLAND, Maine— The Maine State Council of the Society for Human Resources Management has kicked off the seventh annual "Best Places to Work in Maine" program. The event, endorsed by, Best Companies Group, the Maine State Chamber of Commerce, MyJobWave.com, Mainebiz, Maine HR Convention and Mainebiz recognizes companies that have established and consistently fostered outstanding workplace environments. “I think the success of the Best Places to Work program is a true testament to Maine businesses understanding the importance of retaining and recruiting top talent to be successful,” said Kris Avery, state director of the SHRM Maine State Council. In June, Best Companies Group will survey all the Maine companies that have registered online by the deadline of May 25th. The scientifically validated survey will incorporate a company’s employee benefits and policies and responses from a comprehensive employee engagement and satisfaction survey. The data collected from the assessment will be used to determine the Best Places to Work in Maine. “Businesses are the backbone of the
Maine economy,” said Governor Paul LePage. “The ‘Best Places to Work’ project gives employers the opportunity to highlight the best of the best. There are many great companies, big and small, in our State and I encourage people to take part in this program.” First place winners of the sixth annual “Best Places to Work in Maine” program in 2011 included Consigli Construction Co. Inc, based in Portland, in large size company category and The Portland firm of Burgess Advertising in the small/medium size company category. "Consigli employees are passionate about the projects they build, and are some of the most engaged people I’ve ever worked with," said Matthew Tonello, Area Manager of Consigli Construction Co., Inc.. "The feedback we get from the “Best Places to Work” survey allows us to understand where we can improve the workplace environment to ensure that everybody continues to be as passionate about coming to work as they are about doing the work. It has been great to be recognized along with the entire group of exceptional companies that participated in the survey. The Best Companies Group “Employee Feedback Report” is
presented to each participating company, even if they did not make the list. The report includes the summarized employee engagement and satisfaction data, the Maine Benchmark Report, and the transcript of employee written comments. The report is used by many to make significant improvements in their workplace culture. Any company with at least 15 employees in the state of Maine is encouraged to participate. Companies selected as a “Best Place to Work in Maine” will be announced at a gala event in the fall of 2012. A complete
list of top companies will be featured in a statewide publication put out by Mainebiz. There is a fee to participate in the “Best Places to Work in Maine” program that helps cover administrative costs and the production of the Employee Feedback Report. Interested companies can apply to participate in the program online at www.bestplacestoworkme.com. The deadline for registration is May 25, 2012, and all registered companies will be surveyed simultaneously following the deadline date.

Job Fairs are excellent places to land jobs, because employers are there specifically to line up candidates for interviews, and some even interview and hire on-the-spot. While Job Fairs can be overwhelming with many people waiting to see the same employer, the pressure of on-the-spot interviewing, noise and sometimes confusion, they are often a great tool and a good way to meet company representatives face-to-face. Before you go, review some tips on participating, which will help make your Career Fair experience a positive one. Resumes Before the Job Fair, do a little research to find out how many companies are going to be on site. Plan to take enough resumes for all the companies you know you’re interested in, and at least one resume for every two companies that you’re not as interested in. While you may think that you are indifferent in a certain company, the display or a chat with a company representative may change your mind. Be sure that your resume is current and accurate. Have someone proofread them before you make copies! Typos and other errors can be considered sloppiness on your part and your resume quickly “screened out” because of it. Finally, don’t be afraid to distribute your resume to company representatives, that’s what you are there for! Prepare a “One-Minute Commercial” Your “One-Minute Commercial” should be a compilation, summarized, of your resume and cover letter. It should be a brief but descriptive statement about your abilities and skills as well as what you’re looking for in a new job. It is very much like your objective statement. First, illustrate the important details that support your qualifications for the position. This is your chance to let the company representative know why you are uniquely suited for the position you are seeking. Brevity, specificity and perhaps most importantly relativity are the keys!

The Challenge of Being a Career Changer By Tony Calabrese It has always been challenging to be a career changer. It perhaps means needing to go back to school for additional training. In presenting yourself to others, they may often find it difficult getting past seeing you in your previous position, whether that is if they have known you or are seeing you through the words of a resumé. There is the acceptance factor of those already in the field. Frankly you are not considered "an insider" to them. You don't have experiences to share that show you know how to handle the difficult things which may come up in your new profession. And, while you have the desire to get the experience, it is difficult to get anyone to hire you into your newly chosen field. The challenge of changing careers becomes more exasperating in a difficult job market as presently exists. Recently one of my clients was pursuing positions based on her newly acquired educational requirements. While she could see how her former skills and new training
were natural fits in the new industry she was pursuing, those in the industry were frank in their feedback that they felt she did not have the technical background to enter the industry, or at least in the positions she was seeking. Ultimately she began receiving her best response in a discipline she had done for many years in her past work life even though she had taken some time away from the role to raise her family and further her education. Does that mean that individuals should not consider changing careers? Quite the opposite is true.
receptive to the career changer?
With different job types both shrinking and growing in our work world of today, it is anticipated that a person starting out may very well have 12 to 13 different job positions and 4 to 5 careers in their lifetime. So, how does one manage the fact that changing a career focus may very much be necessary during their work life, but at the same time face an employment picture that is not always
Career changing takes planning. Ideally, the best time to consider a career change is while you are still working in your present career or at least have a stream of income to support you. It is also beneficial to consider breaking into your new career slowly. Perhaps volunteer opportunities exist in the profession or low paying parttime positions. Apprenticing under
someone already established in the career may help. Beginning to attend conventions, association meetings or trade shows of the new profession you are seeking begins to melt some of that viewpoint of not being seen as an "insider". Additionally, those venues may expose you to opportunities to make inroads into your newly chosen profession. A career change may mean having >>>

to take an adjustment in salary for awhile. While that may not be desirable or even always possible, it is difficult to expect that you may be paid at the same level and standard you were in your previous profession. Therefore, if you are truly passionate about the new career field, part of one's strategy may be to put away funds on which to live off of, or determine if there is a way to supplement the income they are giving up while they move into their newly chosen field. As my client is learning, it may mean postponing your transition for the time being while your need for income may best be served by the skill sets and career training you already have. Fortunately for my client, she actually liked those skill sets and has found them still in desire in other professions, just not the industry in which she hoped to break in. Others may not be

so fortunate, and therefore, may need to stay in the field they have been in for the time being while stepping back and building a longer range set of steps to break into their newly targeted field. Again remember, career changing has always been challenging, whether good economy or bad. However, many have gone before you and done it. They likely may have taken some of the steps mentioned here or even others not outlined. Those individuals are also a resource to you in terms of understanding what it may take to move into your new field of choice. Above all try to make such a change when it is advantageous to you, when you control the timing and the steps if at all possible. To try to do so under the duress of needing to find an income may likely turn you off to a concept that not only may be right for you, but

Women Unlimited to Host Annual Career Options Fair & Tradeswomen’s Conference Those looking for a career change or interested in exploring a career in the trades are encouraged to attend Women Unlimited's (www.womenunlimited.org) 2012 Career Options Fair and Tradeswomen's Conference. “For those interested in employment opportunities in the trades, the spring is a very important time of year,” said Women Unlimited's executive director Lib Jamison. “Maine has a relatively short construction season, companies do have openings they are looking to fill. Our goal with the Career Options Fair and Tradeswomen’s Conference is to bring employers together with applicants and introduce women to the wealth of trades-related opportunities here in Maine.” The Career Options Fair is free, open to the public and will take place on Friday, March 30 from 1-5 pm at the Senator Inn, in Augusta. Applicants are encouraged to bring resumes and letters of reference, in some cases employers will be holding on-site interviews.
Jamison says Women Unlimited's goal for the conference is to give Maine women more than just a glimpse of the opportunities that are available, but for them to truly experience the trades. “We have workshops on everything from welding and rigging to hot top asphalt and how to use surveying tools. All the senses come into play, participants will really have an opportunity to get their hands dirty and experience the trades.” The Maine Tradeswomen's Conference will be held on Saturday, March 31, from 8am–4pm, at the Capital Area Technical Center in Augusta. Registration is just $10. It is open to women and men, and is a hands-on way to try out the trades. To sign up for the Tradeswomen's Conference or to see an updated list of companies/organizations participating in the Career Options Fair, visit www.womenunlimited.org or call Women Unlimited at (800) 281-5259.

Mistakes When you make a mistake, don't look back at it long. Take the reason of the thing into your mind and then look forward. Mistakes are lessons of wisdom. The past cannot be changed. The future is yet in your power.

Staying positive can be hard in today's world, but here's one small way to work a little positivity in your daily routine. Each day, before you sit down to work, grab a small piece of paper and write a nice thought down about someone you work with. Later, when you see that person, work your positive thought into your conversation. It's a small way of making the world just a little nicer, and it just takes a minute to plan and a short time to deliver.

I Just Graduated, Now What? The graduation parties are over, you've moved out of your dorm, and reality is beginning to set in. The Real World. Not the MTV reality TV show, but the actual real world. It's natural to feel a little anxiety (or a lot!), but as with anything worth doing, a solid plan is required. Though the high unemployment rate makes headlines, there are jobs to be had. There are opportunities out there and they'll go to those who position themselves properly in this ultra-competitive job market. Here are some things to consider as you begin your job search: Take stock of what you have to offer – Employers looking to hire recent grads are not expecting you to have pages of experience. What they want to see is a well-rounded person with a variety of transferable skills they've acquired thus far. What is a transferable skill? A transferable skill is an ability learned through life or work experience. For example Managing time effectively, motivating others, being proficient in specific software applications. Make a list of everything that you have to offer a perspective employer. You'll use the list when writing your resume. Manage your expectations – High paying entry-level jobs with great perks and exciting responsibilities are rare. More likely, you'll be joining a company at the bottom, in a service, operations or sales role. These jobs are filled with great learning opportunities and are valuable far beyond your starting salary. Be open to these roles, it's the "foot in the door" that everyone tells you is so valuable. Write a great resume – I've seen hundreds and hundreds of resumes from recent grads in my career as a hiring manager. It's remarkable how many are poorly conceived and horribly written. This is your first chance to showcase yourself to an employer. Anything less than stellar will likely go unnoticed or
be immediately eliminated. Make use of all the great resources online and at your school's career center, to ensure that your resume is well-written, properly formatted and current in terms of style and content. Today's resumes tell employers how you can specifically add value to their team. Think quality over quantity – Don't send your resume to every company in the world. Your resume and cover letter should be tailored to each job specifically, to show the employer that you're interested in their company. A generic resume and cover letter will rarely if ever be noticed and considered. Network, network, network – The classic job search cliché, but it works. Everyone you know should know you're looking for a job. Everyone in your network is a potential resource. Don't be shy, but always be professional and respect the time of those from whom you seek assistance. Clean up your online identity – This is important. Most recruiters and employers will look for you online. Be sure to remove all the party pictures from Facebook, and adjust your privacy setting accordingly to prevent a "friend" from posting something that may not present you in the most positive light. A LinkedIn profile is a must. Google yourself, and see what you find. Ask yourself if you'd be comfortable if an employer found the same thing. Finding a job is a job, approach it as such. Have a plan for each day. Set goals and exceed them. Be successful! About the Author: Jeffrey Metzger is Owner and Chief Resume Architect at Your Resume Consultant. Changing Your Resume for Each Company A recruiter once gave me an excellent tip when she said to change my resume every time I applied for a job. Why I asked? She told me that company recruiters will often use a keyword search to select the candidates that they feel matches the position. This keeps them from having to sort through the hundreds of resumes they receive. She said that if the resume does not have the keywords that they look for, then they typically go into the rejected pile.

Depending on the position you're applying for, you should use words that will notify HR managers about your qualifications. For example, if you're looking for a position as the Vice President of an accounting company you might want to include words such as:

If you're looking for a job as an administrative assistant you should use the following words when updating your resume: - Ability to type 80 wpm - Microsoft Office - Mac office - Reception - Phone support No matter the type of work you're looking for make sure you ask past colleagues or friends if they know of any open positions within their companies. long as you can turn it into something down the road, it may be worth looking into. Tips for Working with Keyword Search Software Many companies will use a type of software that identifies keywords in resumes. But what can you do to beat these machines? Revise your resume so it includes keywords included in the job description during your opening. Take for example, if the job description says, "Coordinate and develop websites and blogs," your resume

must include keywords such as "websites" and "blogs". But only if you have the experience, of course... Update your multipurpose resume with frequently used keywords so that you do not have to revise it every time you have another job interview. One idea is to revise it every six months in order to stay current. Newer keywords may be used in the future, so stay current with them. Add the most important keywords to your cover letter. Don't over do it though. You just want to have a few of the choice words that HR managers are looking for.
