Portland Regional Chamber Announces the Portland New program offers free benefits for unemployed veterans Veterans Network PORTLAND, Maine— The Portland Regional Chamber announced the launch of the Portland Veterans Network (PVN) on Mar. 29. This comprehensive new program for unemployed veterans returning from Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom focuses on job, education and wellness opportunities. “Over the past few years our armed services have deployed hundreds of Maine men and women to defend our nation’s freedom and liberty. Now these brave men and women are returning home, their lives changed in so many ways, and it is time for our community to support them.” said Chamber CEO Godfrey Wood. The PVN offers a network of partners

with free programs for unemployed veterans to help them re-integrate into the community. The network guides veterans in seeking employment, education, and wellness opportunities. “It is time we help those we deployed to become employed. The Portland Veterans Network is a one-stop shop that will have a measurable near term impact on these young lives.” The programs offered include: Jobs: • Networking: Free membership in the Portland Regional Chamber, and free attendance at hundreds of events with opportunities to meet over 1,000 potential employers. • Sponsor/mentors: Each Veteran will

be able to choose from a list of individuals available to sponsor and encourage them to take advantage of the programming. • Career coaching: Job search techniques, resume writing, mock interviewing, career planning seminars, and online job posting forums. Education: • Direct access to colleges and universities to help veterans navigate the system. Wellness: • Free access to the South Portland Medically Oriented Gym and a family week at Camp Kieve Wavus. • Free tickets/admission to family recreational opportunities.

Veterans will verify their service by their DD214. The following is an outline of the available programs in the Portland Veterans Network: JOBS • Each Vet will receive an email schedule of events throughout the region to which they can come to connect with potential employers. • They will be able to choose a sponsor from the bios of a number of Chamber sponsors with whom they will go to these events for introductions and networking. • Veterans will have nametags for these events showing them as new Chamber members. • Each Vet will receive business cards, printed by JS McCarthy with their contact information.

RETIREMENT

500 career-ready, graduating high school seniors from Jobs for Maine’s Graduates (JMG) programs across Maine gather together for a day of job skills-related competitions and workshops. One of the main features of the day is the Career Expo, a college and career fair, that the students visit throughout the day. We’d love to see your business or school represented there!

PLANNING Taking money away from an individual's take-home pay is a difficult proposition. So an ideal way to contribute to a 401(k), IRAs or any type of retirement savings account is having an automated deduction. Before long, someone will not think as much about how much is being deducted.

INTERVIEW TIP: You’ll want to answer questions to the fullest of your ability. In order to do this, think about what you may be asked before the interview and prepare your answers accordingly. You may even want to setup a practice interview with a friend or family member to test your skills. It is useful to have a game plan for answering. I like to use what is called the “STAR” approach. Do this by describing the SITUATION that you were in or TASK you needed to accomplish, the ACTION you took, focusing on yourself and your skills even if you were in a group, and the RESULT of your actions. How did everything turn out in the end?

– Carol McCarthy

Make the Most of Attending a BY ANGELA M. HIGLEY

Job Fairs are excellent places to land jobs, because employers are there specifically to line up candidates for interviews, and some even interview and hire on-the-spot. While Job Fairs can be overwhelming with many people waiting to see the same employer, the pressure of on-the-spot interviewing, noise and sometimes confusion, they are often a great tool and a good way to meet company representatives face-to-face. Before you go, review some tips on participating, which will help make your Career Fair experience a positive one. Resumes Before the Job Fair, do a little research to find out how many companies are going to be on site. Plan to take enough resumes for all the companies you know you’re interested in, and at least one resume for every two companies that you’re not as interested in. While you may think that you are indifferent in a certain company, the display or a chat with a company representative may change your mind. Be sure that your resume is current and accurate. Have someone proofread them before you make copies! Typos and other errors can be considered sloppiness on your part and your resume quickly “screened out” because of it. Finally, don’t be afraid to distribute your resume to company representatives, that’s what you are there for! Prepare a “One-Minute Commercial” Your “One-Minute Commercial” should be a compilation, summarized, of your resume and cover letter. It should be a brief but descriptive statement about your abilities and skills as well as what you’re looking for in a new job. It is very much like your objective statement. First, illustrate the important details that support your qualifications for the position. This is your chance to let the company representative know why you are uniquely suited for the position you are seeking. Brevity, specificity and perhaps most importantly relativity are the keys!

Want a Better

Career? Everyone wants to be successful in the workplace, but sometimes it's hard to figure out how to get your career moving in the right direction. Follow these five tips to ensure that you build skills and start movement to where you want to be.

• Start from where you are - Make every effort to build your skills in your current job so that if and when you make a move or go for a promotion, you have something to take with you or show. It's usually better to go step by step, rather than hope for a big promotion someday. Focus on doing the best possible job you can now, and plan future career moves carefully. • Sharpen your computer skills - Today, it really doesn't matter what your job is - at some point you will probably need to bee proficient in using a computer. Try to learn everything you can so that you are more marketable. • Develop a learning attitude - Learning in your career should never come to a standstill. Commit yourself to a lifetime of workplace learning and it will pay off nicely. • Learn to work well with others - In almost every job, you will be asked to work with others. • Network - Always talk to others in your industry or profession. This will help you to know what skills you need and keep you on top of job opportunities.

I Just Graduated, Now What? By Jeffrey Metzger

The graduation parties are over, you've moved out of your dorm, and reality is beginning to set in. The Real World. Not the MTV reality TV show, but the actual real world. It's natural to feel a little anxiety (or a lot!), but as with anything worth doing, a solid plan is required. Though the high unemployment rate makes headlines, there are jobs to be had. There are opportunities out there and they'll go to those who position themselves properly in this ultra-competitive job market. Here are some things to consider as you begin your job search: Take stock of what you have to offer – Employers looking to hire recent grads are not expecting you to have pages of experience. What they want to see is a well-rounded person with a variety of transferable skills they've acquired thus far. What is a transferable skill? A transferable skill is an ability learned through life or work experience. For example Managing time effectively, motivating others, being proficient in specific software applications. Make a list of everything that you have to offer a perspective employer. You'll use the list when writing your resume. Manage your expectations – High paying entry-level jobs with great perks and exciting responsibilities are rare. More likely, you'll be joining a company at the bottom, in a service, operations or sales role. These jobs are filled with great learning opportunities and are valuable far beyond your starting salary. Be open to these roles, it's the "foot in the door" that everyone tells you is so valuable. Write a great resume – I've seen hundreds and hundreds of resumes from recent grads in my career as a hiring manager. It's remarkable how many are poorly conceived and horribly written. This is your first chance to showcase yourself to an employer. Anything less than stellar will likely go unnoticed or

be immediately eliminated. Make use of all the great resources online and at your school's career center, to ensure that your resume is well-written, properly formatted and current in terms of style and content. Today's resumes tell employers how you can specifically add value to their team. Think quality over quantity – Don't send your resume to every company in the world. Your resume and cover letter should be tailored to each job specifically, to show the employer that you're interested in their company. A generic resume and cover letter will rarely if ever be noticed and considered. Network, network, network – The classic job search cliché, but it works. Everyone you know should know you're looking for a job. Everyone in your network is a potential resource. Don't be shy, but always be professional and respect the time of those from whom you seek assistance. Clean up your online identity – This is important. Most recruiters and employers will look for you online. Be sure to remove all the party pictures from Facebook, and adjust your privacy setting accordingly to prevent a "friend" from posting something that may not present you in the most positive light. A LinkedIn profile is a must. Google yourself, and see what you find. Ask yourself if you'd be comfortable if an employer found the same thing. Finding a job is a job, approach it as such. Have a plan for each day. Set goals and exceed them. Be successful! About the Author: Jeffrey Metzger is Owner and Chief Resume Architect at Your Resume Consultant. The origin of our word panic is derived from the Greek god Pan. According to the Merriam-Webster New Book of Word Histories, this lusty and musically gifted god was also known for giving great shouts that instilled fear into giants as they battled the gods. Pan was worshipped in Athens because it was believed that he instilled fear into the hearts of the Persians causing them to flee the Battle of Marathon. And that is where we get our word and idea of panic-any sudden and groundless fear.

Changing Your Resume for Each Company A recruiter once gave me an excellent tip when she said to change my resume every time I applied for a job. Why I asked? She told me that company recruiters will often use a keyword search to select the candidates that they feel matches the position. This keeps them from having to sort through the hundreds of resumes they receive. She said that if the resume does not have the keywords that they look for, then they typically go into the rejected pile.

knowing someone whose already in the organization. After updating your resume, send it to your friends in the industry and see if they are able to direct it to the appropriate HR

Depending on the position you're applying for, you should use words that will notify HR managers about your qualifications. For example, if you're looking for a position as the Vice President of an accounting company you might want to include words such as:

managers.

- Tax Accounting - Reconciliations - Profit and Loss Statements It can be very difficult to find a job in today's economic climate, and looking for high level or executive work requires a keen eye, and often,

“recruiters will often use a keyword search...”

If you're looking for a job as an administrative assistant you should use the following words when updating your resume: - Ability to type 80 wpm - Microsoft Office - Mac office - Reception - Phone support No matter the type of work you're looking for make sure you ask past colleagues or friends if they know of any open positions within their companies. long as you can turn it into something down the road, it may be worth looking into. Tips for Working with Keyword Search Software Many companies will use a type of software that identifies keywords in resumes. But what can you do to beat these machines? Revise your resume so it includes keywords included in the job description during your opening. Take for example, if the job description says, "Coordinate and develop websites and blogs," your resume

must include keywords such as "websites" and "blogs". But only if you have the experience, of course... Update your multipurpose resume with frequently used keywords so that you do not have to revise it every time you have another job interview. One idea is to revise it every six months in order to stay current. Newer keywords may be used in the future, so stay current with them. Add the most important keywords to your cover letter. Don't over do it though. You just want to have a few of the choice words that HR managers are looking for. SHRM Kicks Off 7th Annual “Best Places to Work in Maine” PORTLAND, Maine— The Maine State Council of the Society for Human Resources Management has kicked off the seventh annual "Best Places to Work in Maine" program. The event, endorsed by, Best Companies Group, the Maine State Chamber of Commerce, My Job Wave, Maine HR Convention and Mainebiz recognizes companies that have established and consistently fostered outstanding workplace environments. “I think the success of the Best Places to Work program is a true testament to Maine businesses understanding the importance of retaining and recruiting top talent to be successful,” said Kris Avery, state director of the SHRM Maine State Council. In June, Best Companies Group will survey all the Maine companies that have registered online by the deadline of May 25th. The scientifically validated survey will incorporate a company’s employee benefits and policies and responses from a comprehensive employee engagement and satisfaction survey. The data collected from the assessment will be used to determine the Best Places to Work in Maine. “Businesses are the backbone of the

Maine economy,” said Governor Paul LePage. “The ‘Best Places to Work’ project gives employers the opportunity to highlight the best of the best. There are many great companies, big and small, in our State and I encourage people to take part in this program.” First place winners of the sixth annual “Best Places to Work in Maine” program in 2011 included Consigli Construction Co. Inc, based in Portland, in large size company category and The Portland firm of Burgess Advertising in the small/medium size company category. "Consigli employees are passionate about the projects they build, and are some of the most engaged people I’ve ever worked with," said Matthew Tonello, Area Manager of Consigli

Construction Co., Inc.. "The feedback we get from the “Best Places to Work” survey allows us to understand where we can improve the workplace environment to ensure that everybody continues to be as passionate about coming to work as they are about doing the work. It has been great to be recognized along with the entire group of exceptional companies that participated in the survey. The Best Companies Group “Employee Feedback Report” is presented to each participating company, even if they did not make the list. The report includes the summarized employee engagement and satisfaction data, the Maine Benchmark Report, and the transcript of employee written comments. The report is used by many to make significant improvements in their

workplace culture. Any company with at least 15 employees in the state of Maine is encouraged to participate. Companies selected as a “Best Place to Work in Maine” will be announced at a gala event in the fall of 2012. A complete list of top companies will be featured in a statewide publication put out by Mainebiz. There is a fee to participate in the “Best Places to Work in Maine” program that helps cover administrative costs and the production of the Employee Feedback Report. Interested companies can apply to participate in the program online at www.bestplacestoworkme.com. The deadline for registration is May 25, 2012, and .all registered companies will be surveyed simultaneously following the deadline date.
