Once you know what you want to pursue – a job or a career – you need to figure out how to achieve your end goal. Consider the following questions: - What is your work experience? If there is a particular industry in which you worked previously, it will be easier to move from one job to another in that same industry. For example, if you worked in a restaurant, you are more likely to change positions within the food-service industry. A career change – for example from finance to social services – might require some additional education and training. - What is your education? Even if your first job did not match your educational background, your education and training can help you move to a new position. For example, maybe you received training in business applications and office procedures, but your first job was filling orders in a warehouse. The skills you gained on the job, and the

education you have, might suit you for a position with an order fulfillment company, where you may encounter long-term career options. - Do you have the skills to switch from one industry to another? If you want to switch from one career to another, you can. Just remember that you need to leverage the skills you gained to meet the needs of a new career. Create a list of your strengths and skills acquired in your previous positions and make notes on how they would relate to a new career. If many of your skills are non-transferable – perhaps because they were specialized or you worked in a small environment that did not keep up with changing technology – consider returning to school for some training. Regardless of whether you can afford to quit working to go back to school, first consider taking a night class or two at the local community college and explore your options.

On Campus Employers: Staying positive can be hard in today's world, but here's one small way to work a little positivity in your daily routine. Each day, before you sit down to work, grab a small piece of paper and write a nice thought down about someone you work with. Later, when you see that person, work your positive thought into your conversation. It's a small way of making the world just a little nicer, and it just takes a minute to plan and a short time to deliver.

Governor and State Agencies Promote February 19-26 as "America Saves Week" and "Military Saves Week" AUGUSTA – Governor Paul R. LePage recently joined Commissioner Anne L. Head and agencies within Maine's Department of Professional and Financial Regulation in promoting February 19–26 as "America Saves Week" and "Military Saves Week." The Department's Office of Securities and Bureau of Financial Institutions are leading the State's effort to highlight these national campaigns sponsored by the American Savings Education Council. Recognizing that many Americans are not saving enough for retirement and other goals, "America Saves Week" began in 2007 to bring organizations from all sectors together to encourage good savings practices and to provide tools for individuals to assess their own saving status. "Military Saves Week," is a parallel campaign that focuses on Service Members, veterans and their families. "In building a more prosperous
Maine for the long-term, it's important to remember that our economic strength as a State is tied to the financial well-being of individual families," Governor LePage commented. "Resources offered by the Department of Professional and Financial Regulation on saving and investing can help families, including those in the National Guard, plan for a more prosperous future by achieving their saving and investing goals." Commissioner Anne Head and Securities Administrator Judith Shaw announced that the Office of Securities is releasing a new personal finance guide for military families, called the Financial Field Manual. It's available directly from the Office of Securities and will be distributed this month to Maine National Guard branches. "This comprehensive 20-page booklet will be an asset to many Service Members and veterans," Administrator Shaw commented. "It
covers a wide range of important topics, including special homebuying resources for military families. The manual also provides advice to help Service Members protect investments when retiring." Shaw noted that safe investing' resources for all Maine families are available on the agency's website (www.investors.maine.gov) or by calling 1-877-624-8551 (TTY 1888-577-6690). "To avoid investment fraud and invest as safely as possible, investors should make a rule to always check the credentials of any investment adviser or broker before entrusting money to them." Bureau of Financial Institutions' Superintendent Lloyd P. LaFountain III highlighted the many resources available from his agency to help Maine families save and protect their assets. "America Saves Week is an opportunity for people to examine their saving habits, to evaluate anticipated financial needs, and to plan accordingly," LaFountain stated.
"The Bureau's online Consumer Library' can help families get started." Resources from the Bureau are available at www.maine.gov/pfr/financialinstitu tions or by calling 1-800-965-5235 (TTY 1-888-577-6690). Nationally, hundreds of governmental, corporate and nonprofit organizations are promoting the goals of the campaign. To learn more, visit www.americasaves.org or www.militarysaves.org. The Office of Securities and Bureau of Financial Institutions are part of Maine's Department of Professional and Financial Regulation, which encourages sound ethical business practices through the regulation of insurers, financial institutions, creditors, investment providers, and numerous professions and occupations for the purpose of protecting the citizens of Maine. Consumers can learn more about the Department at www.maine.gov/pfr.

Job Fairs are excellent places to land jobs, because employers are there specifically to line up candidates for interviews, and some even interview and hire on-the-spot. While Job Fairs can be overwhelming with many people waiting to see the same employer, the pressure of on-the-spot interviewing, noise and sometimes confusion, they are often a great tool and a good way to meet company representatives face-to-face. Before you go, review some tips on participating, which will help make your Career Fair experience a positive one. Resumes Before the Job Fair, do a little research to find out how many companies are going to be on site. Plan to take enough resumes for all the companies you know you’re interested in, and at least one resume for every two companies that you’re not as interested in. While you may think that you are indifferent in a certain company, the display or a chat with a company representative may change your mind. Be sure that your resume is current and accurate. Have someone proofread them before you make copies! Typos and other errors can be considered sloppiness on your part and your resume quickly “screened out” because of it. Finally, don’t be afraid to distribute your resume to company representatives, that’s what you are there for! Prepare a “One-Minute Commercial” Your “One-Minute Commercial” should be a compilation, summarized, of your resume and cover letter. It should be a brief but descriptive statement about your abilities and skills as well as what you’re looking for in a new job. It is very much like your objective statement. First, illustrate the important details that support your qualifications for the position. This is your chance to let the company representative know why you are uniquely suited for the position you are seeking. Brevity, specificity and perhaps most importantly relativity are the keys!

Are You Your Own Personal Brand Manager? By Chris Perry, MBA, Career Rocketeer
Your answer to this question should be "YES!" unless, of course, you are a celebrity or any other global personality who can afford an entire marketing team to manage your image and reputation.
If you are active online with blogs and social networks, managing your brand can be as simple as Googling yourself and using Google Alerts to stay updated on any new mentions or publications of your name, your websites, your blogs, your articles and more. When offline, managing your brand can be as easy as carefully reviewing your performance evaluations at work and/or seeking consistent feedback from family, friends, supervisors and other career stakeholders to make sure your personal communications are being effectively transmitted and correctly received.
We should all be taking charge in creating, establishing and managing our own personal brands online and offline. Once you have begun to establish yours, managing it can be a piece of cake.
1. It is true that people are not products. However, often we choose one product over other similar products because of its brand (a.k.a. its unique and differentiating value) and how that value fulfills our need in a given situation. This holds true for people, as well. Each person has a unique and differentiating value, or personal brand, that fulfills an organization's need in a given situation better than other similar people.
Therefore, we must fight fire with fire to stay on top of everything and protect our reputations and our investment.
2. We should all care about our personal brands because they combine our strengths, our personalities, our reputations, our values and our goals all into one communicable, unique and differentiating value that we bring to the table.
Personal branding is simply creating, establishing and communicating a unique and memorable value and reputation, and personal brand management is the consistent upkeep and maintenance of this value in the spheres in which you choose to exist and be active, both online and offline.
As I continue to surf the net for new articles about or related to this topic, I have been amazed at the number of voices against these concepts. Here are just some of the questions and comments I have come across from such voices:
1. 2. 3. 4.
"People are not brands, because people are not products." "Who cares about your personal brand?" "Personal branding is narcissistic." "Are you so unsure of who you are that you must reaffirm yourself via Internet tools?" 5. "Why is it so important to make sure your online image appears the way you want it to?" While I respect and understand where each of these points is coming from, I must reinforce the importance of personal brand management in response to each one.
3. Personal branding isn't narcissistic unless taken to the extreme. Promoting your strengths and your unique and differentiating value to your career stakeholders is healthy and important for your own selffulfillment and achievement in life. As more and more professionals brand themselves, it is essential that you establish your own brand in order to stand out in your job search and career development. 4. Keeping track of your online reputation with simple online tools does not make you less confident. The Internet is a vast and ever-evolving platform on which it is much easier to miss "fires" threatening our personal brands and reputations.
5. Your online image is just a part of your overall image and personal brand. If you invest time, energy and even money into your own personal development and image offline, it makes sense that you will want your online image to match.
Brand managers establish and protect the value that your favorite chosen brands of products deliver, so be your own personal brand manager and protect all that you have to offer! Ask job seekers what their goal is in terms of their employment search most of them will tell you that it is "to get a job." While that certainly is the intent of the end result of their job search campaign, one of the early lessons I learned in my Five O'Clock Club career coaching studies is that your goal throughout your campaign is to "get the next interview." As I continue to work with a growing range of clients I am observing first hand the value of this type of focus. The job search in and of itself is very stressful and can cause great swings in one's emotions no matter how well their campaign is organized. However, I find my clients most energized when they have identified a new contact with whom they have the opportunity to discuss their search, or know they have an upcoming interview which may help lead them to an eventual position. When you stop and think about it this actually makes a lot of sense. When one finds themselves in job search, in the early stages the only ones who may actually know they're in search are close family and friends other than the individual in search themselves. Close family and friends while many times supportive are too close to you and can be emotionally tied to your journey. As you begin to reach out and first speak to those that don't know you about your search several things begin to happen. First, you begin to gain clarity as to how to present yourself both in terms of who you are, what you have done and what you are seeking to do as you go forward. As you learn to become a
better interviewer, you use the exchange as both an opportunity to get and give information. You learn to be as prepared or more prepared as the one you are interviewing by both having researched some on the topic you are about to speak and by having your questions ready so as to learn what it is that you don't know and which will help benefit you in your search going forward. Those that get proficient at the process learn to listen from the perspective of a consultant. A consultant is always looking to hear what it is that the other person finds to be difficult for them, and seeks an opportunity to show how they are able to help address the problem. Finally, an individual that has a solution for another and sees an opportunity to help will follow-up with that person offering a proposal of how they may be able to solve their issue. The predominant tendency many people have while they are in job search is to approach things passively. They may send out many resumes' to a number of different companies. They'll meet someone who says they know a person that may be able to help them and then wait for their contact to set up a meeting with another as opposed to taking the contact information and setting up the meeting themselves. After a job interview they'll write a thank you note, but then just sit back and wait on contact from a company as opposed to following up to gain

Employment Times Announces Name Change Maine’s First Help–Wanted Publication Matures to Strengthen Recruitment Advertising Services to Local Employers We are pleased to announce that we have merged Maine’s first help wanted publication, The Employment Times, and the later-found job board, MyJobWave.com, to create My Job Wave, in print and online. Combining these two product names have allowed us to more easily explain our services, while offering the same great products. We have simplified all areas of our company and will stay committed to our mission: to create, communicate, and publish local career opportunities throughout Maine and New Hampshire. With a new innovative website and software, and an ever-growing community involvement, we are positioned to continue to provide effective recruitment advertising plans built to attract ideal candidates. We will continue to operate as a Sun Media company, based out of Lewiston with a recent second location in
Falmouth, to better serve southern Maine and New Hampshire. One of the founders of Employment Times, Jeanne Paquette, had a desire to connect local employers with job seekers. Jeanne was very active in the community and became quickly well known, involving herself in many local industry associations, chambers, and educational events. Today, we continue her involvement as we benefit greatly from being local as we are able act as an advocate for our clients when the opportunity presents itself. We believe that an effective recruitment campaign tells the public why they want to work for you. We are eager to connect our fellow local companies with their best candidates by way of our print and online products. We thank you for your business and support and look forward to helping you with your future hiring needs.

Last Minute Tax Tips (ARA) – Are you among the millions of Americans who scramble every year to meet Uncle Sam's income tax filing deadline? The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) estimates that one-third of Americans wait until the last minute to file their personal income tax returns (for 2011 income tax returns, the deadline has been extended to April 17). If you count yourself among that group, it's important to realize the costs could be adding up - from missing important deductions that could affect the amount of your refund to incurring penalties from the IRS for not filing on time. The keys to paying exactly what you owe and obtaining a refund sooner are timely filing, familiarity with relevant tax deductions and credits, and proper organization, according to FindLaw.com, the nation's leading website for free legal information. If you don't have the time or inclination to

become familiar with the U.S. tax code, consider getting the help of a professional tax preparer or a tax attorney, or at the very least using tax software that can guide you through income tax form preparation. To help you make the most of tax season, here are some additional tips from FindLaw.com: Start a file. Somewhere in your home, create a place where you can store all the documents you'll need to complete your taxes. When W-2 forms, mortgage statements and other tax-related documents are mailed to you, put them into this location, file or box them, and check them off as they come in. In addition, keep receipts of potentially deductible items such as medical and dental expenses, tuition, daycare and after-school care expenses. Seek advice for your small business. Whether by choice or out of necessity, many Americans have decided to go into business for themselves as a result of the "great recession." From the moment you make this choice, go to an accountant who specializes in working with small business owners and get advice on how to properly and accurately record all of your business expenses and revenue. Accurate bookkeeping is essential to ensuring accurate payment

of the taxes your business owes. An ounce of prevention will go a long way toward helping avoid an IRS audit. Get help. Don't have time to figure out all the ongoing changes to tax regulations? Don't have the interest? Then get the help of a professional tax preparer immediately after you receive W-2 forms from your employer in order to complete and file your taxes before the filing deadline. The IRS offers help, too. Visit www.irs.gov for information about filing your income taxes. Check out IRS publication 17, "Your Federal Income Tax," on the IRS website. It highlights everything you need to know about filing your personal income tax return. The IRS also offers help over the phone and interactive tax assistance through its website. Go electronic. Every year, more and more people file their taxes electronically. Why? Because it offers ease of use and quicker tax refunds, which are typically issued two weeks after filing. In 2010, nearly 100 million Americans (70 percent of tax filers) filed their taxes electronically, using offthe-shelf tax preparation software or the IRS website's filing page, according to IRS estimates. Electronic filing can reduce math errors and the cost of paying for return receipts at the post office. When you file electronically, consider using direct deposit, which

authorizes the IRS to deposit your refund directly into your checking account instead of sending you a check in the mail. Don't avoid filing. Some people, especially those who are self-employed or have been laid off, worry that they can't pay the full amount of taxes they owe. Therefore, they avoid filing. Don't do it. It will only make matters worse. First, give yourself time by filing for an extension, which gives you up to six months to file a return. Second, it's better to pay something rather than nothing if you owe on your taxes. A non-payment of your taxes can result in penalties and interest. Even a partial payment can reduce your penalties and shows good faith if you're audited. Keep your returns. In the event that you're audited, it's important to have up to seven years of previously filed income tax returns on file. These are also useful in preparing current income tax returns, and may be valuable to your estate's executor if you become incapacitated or die unexpectedly. Plan ahead. Tax regulations change every year. To lower your tax burden, start keeping good records now and become familiar with changes to the tax code for 2012 by consulting with an experienced tax attorney, accountant, or by visiting the IRS website, www.irs.gov.

Writing a Winning
Resume
Yes a focus and strategy of making getting the next interview your goal takes courage. It does involve a lot of persistence on the part of the job searcher. However, it certainly keeps one involved as an active participant in their search. Those who fully commit to this approach learn quickly to talk to as many individuals as possible that may help them in their search. They'll take the time to set up meetings with those who may not have a job opening at the current time, but who may be able to provide needed information or guidance as they pursue their search in their field of choice. They'll not focus their energies all on one job opening, but look to have several opportunities working for them at the same time. Above all, they reach the point where they realize it is worse to sit back and wait for something to happen, as opposed to possibly being told they are no longer a candidate for a position and knowing they have made every effort to present what they offer to that position. Therefore, if you find yourself in job search in 2012, either through your own choice or through circumstances that are not of your choosing, remember finding that next job is the
end point to which you are looking to get. The true goal is to talk to as many people as you can along the way about your search. And, whether those interviews are just to gain valuable information about the field or type of position you are seeking, to make more people in the profession aware you are in job search or actually to interview for a position itself, you always should be looking to get that next interview. Making this a regular practice will not only assist you in leading you to your next job, but is advice to continue with once that job is secured and as you move beyond that job and forward with your career.
