In celebration of National Volunteer Week (4/15-4/21) Androscoggin Volunteer Association (AVA) is hosting a Volunteer Fair, Monday, April 16, 2012 from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at SeniorsPlus located at 8 Falcon Road, Lewiston. The AVA is a group that consists of organizations and non-profits that rely heavily on efforts of volunteer staff. Each month, the AVA meets to network about opportunities for volunteers here in Androscoggin County. In an effort to connect people who are seeking volunteer opportunities and the local organizations that are looking for volunteer help, the AVA is hosting its second Volunteer Fair. “After the success of our first Volunteer Fair last December, we
knew we had to offer people another event to connect them to volunteer opportunities here in our community, said Angela Coombs, volunteer resources coordinator for United Way. “So many people are looking for ways to help others and for many, volunteering gives them a special kind of purpose. The AVA welcomes all area organizations that utilize volunteers to exhibit at this fair. “And if you are a person looking to find out where you can make a difference, you won’t want to miss it! added Coombs. Job Fairs are excellent places to land jobs, because employers are there specifically to line up candidates for interviews, and some even interview and hire on-the-spot. While Job Fairs can be overwhelming with many people waiting to see the same employer, the pressure of on-the-spot interviewing, noise and sometimes confusion, they are often a great tool and a good way to meet company representatives face-to-face. Before you go, review some tips on participating, which will help make your Career Fair experience a positive one. Resumes Before the Job Fair, do a little research to find out how many companies are going to be on site. Plan to take enough resumes for all the companies you know you’re interested in, and at least one resume for every two companies that you’re not as interested in. While you may think that you are indifferent in a certain company, the display or a chat with a company representative may change your mind. Be sure that your resume is current and accurate. Have someone proofread them before you make copies! Typos and other errors can be considered sloppiness on your part and your resume quickly “screened out because of it. Finally, don’t be afraid to distribute your resume to company representatives, that’s what you are there for! Prepare a “One-Minute Commercial Your “One-Minute Commercial should be a compilation, summarized, of your resume and cover letter. It should be a brief but descriptive statement about your abilities and skills as well as what you’re looking for in a new job. It is very much like your objective statement. First, illustrate the important details that support your qualifications for the position. This is your chance to let the company representative know why you are uniquely suited for the position you are seeking. Brevity, specificity and perhaps most importantly relativity are the keys!

Personal Branding:
The Lighthouse Branding Model By Chris Perry, MBA Career Rocketeer
More and more people are talking about the importance of personal branding, both in career searching and in career development. Effective personal branding not only makes you stand out from the crowd to employers and recruiters, it can also increase your job security by communicating your value as a leader and team player to your organization. What is personal branding? Personal branding is the process of identifying the unique and differentiating value that you bring to an organization, team and/or project and communicating it in a professionally memorable and consistent manner in all of your actions, both online and offline, to all current and prospective stakeholders in your career. The Lighthouse Personal Branding Model The lighthouse is a great model for breaking down the branding process into four key steps: the foundation, the beacon, the tower and the beam.
Foundation: Your foundation is your unarguable strengths and experience in your chosen area. To identify your own foundation, write down the strengths that differentiate you from the rest and ask your friends, family and colleagues/managers to do the same for you. Identify the top three to five overlapping strengths that support the career direction you want to pursue.
Beacon: Your beacon is the memorable and consistent communication of your strengths and experience. Now that you have identified your foundation, it's time to create your beacon by finding a word or phrase that represents these strengths and can become your brand. Develop a short pitch that can follow your brand, describing your strengths in more detail. Ensure that your word or phrase is versatile and can change with your direction.
Tower: Simply put, your tower is your visibility, reach and presentation, both online and offline, which support the beacon. This is really everything you do to proactively build your personal brand. The higher you build your tower with your efforts, the more visible you will be to potential career stakeholders. Here are some ways to proactively build your brand and credibility in front of your target audience:
Chris Perry, MBA, is a Gen Y brand and marketing generator, brand marketing manager, career search and personal branding expert, professional speaker, entrepreneur and brand consultant. Create a LinkedIn profile and follow the suggested steps to complete your profile 100 percent, making sure you include your personal brand and pitch in your subtitle and summary sections. Create a Google account and profile for improved search engine optimization. Include your personal brand on your resume, cover letter, business cards, email signature, voicemail message and across your other social networks, such as Twitter and Facebook. Consider creating a personal website/blog site where you can house all of your information, including experience, education, skills, honors, entrepreneurial efforts and more. Start your own blog with a unique point of >>> view on your industry/area of interest.

Having identified my foundation to be my endless energy, out-of-the-box creativity, relationship building and problem solving, I looked for a word that could pull all of those strengths together into one memorable brand message. in marketing and brand management, and therefore, I became a brand and marketing generator. I proactively built my tower by incorporating my brand directly into my online profiles, my resumes and my entrepreneurial efforts. I then took a more active approach, targeting the "beam" by incorporating my personal brand in my interview responses, networking introductions and informational interview outreach. It was this process that helped me successfully secure my current employment, and this model continues to help guide all of my professional and entrepreneurial ventures. As you create, build and improve on your personal brand, keep the lighthouse in mind as a visual model and guide to personal branding success.
