Ben Churchill, Managing Director, Emrill and Norman Crowley, Chairman, Crowley Carbon at the Press Conference

4th November 2012, Dubai: Emrill announced its partnership with two leading energy companies; Crowley Carbon, Ireland and Carillion Energy Services, UK on the 4th November 2012. With their combined strengths, the partnership formed a new entity revealed as Emrill Energy which provides energy management and engineering services to clients across the United Arab Emirates. Emrill identified that buildings with aged assets had rendered them inefficient, leading to high energy consumption and rising energy bills for their clients. This inspired the company to spend 18 months developing Emrill Energy with its partners, focusing on achieving significant cost savings by reducing energy consumption with unique products and strategies. article continues on page 3

An interview with

NEV PATTERSON Head of Employee Welfare

What are your main responsibilities? As Head of Employee Welfare my responsibilities include the safe, compliant and cost efficient delivery of accommodation in alignment with the Business Objectives to deliver excellent welfare facilities for all staff. I establish continuous improvement strategies that support developments with business wide initiatives such as Health, Safety, Quality and Environmental (HSQE) related projects. At Emrill, we believe that the wellbeing of employees is of great importance and therefore a major part of my role is creating and promoting educational and welfare programmes to ensure they are healthy, happy and safe. What are you currently working on? We are looking at further maximising employee satisfaction through welfare facilities and at present, we are looking into the implementation of plans for female accommodation in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Additionally, Emrill’s 2013 Sport and Social Plan is underway and we are always on the lookout for new companies to compete against as we further increase the recreational activities we offer employees. What does a normal workday look like? Anything that may affect the welfare and wellbeing of Emrill employees is our main priority including the implementation of action plans to ensure we are providing high quality accommodation and recreational facilities continuously to all employees. I consistently create and deliver employee engagement plans to encourage communication and help create a healthy work life balance for employees. What are the challenges? With over 4000 employees of 15 different nationalities residing in the Emrill Village Accommodation, the biggest challenge is

meeting employee expectations and ensuring all solutions are in line with Business Plans. Recently, I have challenged our sporting Team Leaders and Coaches to increase participants in each of their sporting arenas and we are expanding the variety of recreational activities to appeal to a wider range of employee interests. How does working at Emrill differ from your previous experience? Compared to other organisations, Emrill are truly committed to the welfare and safety of all employees. Employee feedback therefore is imperative and captured on a regular basis through various methods such as the Emrill Post Box, Don’t Walk By programme, Management Tours, Team Talk and the Great Debate. There are several outlets

What do you see in the future for Emrill? I see more contract wins in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, strengthening and expanding our current client base. A successful year is definitely ahead for Emrill Energy, which is already rapidly expanding. Additionally, Emrill is continuously improving its Service Excellence standards to differentiate itself in quality from its competitors. I believe the new Centre of Excellence will distinguish and further push us ahead of our competitors in the market with expanded capabilities that deliver highly practical and educational training courses.

“Emrill are truly committed to the welfare and safety of all employees. Employee feedback therefore is imperative and captured on a regular basis through various methods.” for employees to express their concerns anonymously and as part of the Senior Management Team, I review their collective feedback and concerns to create action plans to address them. how does working with employee welfare compare to working with clients? I thoroughly enjoy the experience. I find it similar to maintaining client relationships as in both situations, you work towards implementing solutions that align with their priorities. While the solutions differ from working with clients, the process is similar; neither is standstill, you maintain the relationship and consistently develop plans for further satisfaction. DEPARTMENT PROFILE

HOUSEKEEPING Princess Tower Ayub Khan Assistant Facilities Manager “There is nothing more satisfying than a job well done.” I manage all hard and soft services with the aim to deliver a consistent quality service. This allows me to work closely with the Technical, Housekeeping and Security Supervisors on daily operations and it is my responsibility to ensure our services are in accordance with standard operating procedures, health and safety regulations, company policies, contractual and legal requirements. If a situation arises that is not service specific, which means I am unable to allocate it to a direct source, then we work towards implementing a suitable solution. Additionally, I meet with the Building Manager and Contractors to attend to requests or receive feedback.

Ashok Kumar Housekeeping Supervisor “Emrill has allowed me to grow professionally and personally. I have been with Emrill since 2004.” Emrill works towards creating excellent Health and Safety procedures which is why I always start off the day by briefing all Housekeeping Attendants on Safety Practices. I prepare team schedules for the day and assign staff their tasks to divide the workload. This enables the Housekeeping staff to perform their duties in an efficient, timely and safe manner. The workload varies daily from simple cleaning tasks to technical housekeeping issues which I attend to and find a solution for. A daily record is also maintained with events, lost and found items and feedback which is later handed over to the Supervisor of the night shift to prevent overlaps, avoid miscommunication and maintain service continuity. I also work with the site management reporting progress and challenges.

Arun Rashid Housekeeping Attendant “What I love about Emrill is the growth opportunities; I want to build my career here.” I work with a team of Housekeeping Attendants to make sure the building is clean and spotless all the time. We divide tasks to perform our duties in the same workstation for a longer period of time. This makes it easier for us to follow-up on tasks and be more efficient. I work the residential floors and attend to residents’ concerns by trying to repair what I can. If a problem is technical which is common during the summer, I contact my Supervisor immediately for the right action to be taken. We report to our Supervisor every day, recording work that has been carried out, what needs attention and include feedback that has been brought forward.
