Teacher for a Day - High School Edition

Page 1

Dear Fellow Teacher, After the success of my first book Teacher for a Day- Primary School Edition, I had many requests to develop a High School version. I consulted with numerous High School teachers and spoke with High School Supply Teachers about what they wanted in a resource and this is what we developed. Although planning is often left in High School, there are times when a lesson isn’t working, technology fails you or the planned lesson finishes early. What to do then?? Sometimes it is hard to think on your feet, especially when you are new in the game of Supply, so for those moments, this resource will be like your umbrella on a rainy day, you won’t want to be without it. The book was designed to be an all-in-one resource that has specifically chosen lessons that won’t overwhelm. The activities need NO photocopying and little to NO resources as there are enough photocopiable resources out there, making this book stand apart. Sometimes the photocopier is jammed or you just don’t have time, but this book has everything you need inside it. It will give you the ability to cope in all situations, guiding you with organisational tools, behavior management and employment tips as well as supplying lots of engaging lessons and time fillers for most high school subjects. This guide is set into 15 different sections.

The book also includes useful items and templates. Resources included: • Supply Teacher Form • School Year Calendar • Professional Development recording sheet

• Financial Records sheet • Reflective Diary • Activities for all High School grades and more

I hope this makes your days easier and successful, giving you return calls and plenty of work. Happy teaching!

Poetry Limerick A humorous, 5 line poem that has set syllables and rhyme. It follows the rhyming pattern of AABBA. It has 10 syllables in lines 1, 2 and 5 and these lines must rhyme and have the same rhythm. Lines 3 and 4 need to have 5-7 syllables that have the same rhythm and rhyme.

There once was a young boy from Spain Who loved to play in the rain He slipped in a puddle Then wanted a cuddle And decided he won’t do that again.

Lyrical Poetry Students will look up, listen to or write from memory a popular song’s lyrics. Determine what the song is about. Identify different poetic devices and discuss.

• Rhyme (when the ending of words sound the same- Well, she was just 17. You know what I mean). • Metaphors (figure of speech which is not literally applicable – You’re the falling star, you’re the getaway car).

• Alliteration (repeated same letter sound- Whisper words of wisdom).

• Personification (human characteristics given to nonhuman things- The highway won’t hold you tonight). • Allusion (an indirect passing reference- That you were Romeo, you were throwing pebbles). • Onomatopoeia (words that sound like what they describeBoom, boom, boom, even brighter than the moon, moon, moon).

Cryptic Haiku Haiku is a 3-line poem that has the syllable pattern of 5-7-5 and does not rhyme. Students can create a haiku to describe something then get a partner to guess what it is. A remote to use Hours of fun to be had One or two players

• Similes (figure of speech comparing one thing to another- You’re as cold as ice).

• Imagery (visually descriptive languageThe word spread like leaves in a storm).

Variables of a Bottle Flip What is the perfect scenario for a successful bottle flip? To conduct a fair test you must change one factor and keep all other variables the same. What are the variables that can affect a bottle flip? Bottle size, water measurements, flip rotations, wind? Choose Independent, Dependent, Controlled OR Change, Measure, Same method to test a variable. Eg. Test 3 different water levels keeping all other variables the same. Record your findings after doing 5 tosses at each level. What is your evaluation? What was the ideal water measurement? *If you don’t have water bottles you can test the variables of paper aeroplanes/paper ball tossing etc.

Dodge Ball For an all-inclusive version of Dodge Ball, set up a square with cones. Choose 2-4 people to be the throwers who stand outside the square and everyone else is inside the square. The throwers have a ball each and must throw the ball and hit the players in the middle for them to get out. If a player is hit with the ball they then become a thrower to try and get more players out. If someone catches the ball on the full, they can choose someone else to come back in the middle to play again.

Line Tiggy Using a basketball court, students must walk/run only on the line while two students try to tag them. If you are tagged you must sit out until the next game.

Teacher for a Day

BBB Ball (Bounce Ball Behind) Using a bouncy ball/basketball/netball, students must allow the ball to bounce once in front of them before pushing the ball backwards over their head. If the ball bounces twice and you are the closest to the ball you must sit out. If you throw the ball out on the full or the ball hits you on the full you are also out. The last person remaining, wins.

Capture the Flag

167

HPE

Split the class into two even teams and set the field up with cones to create four corners as pictured below. In two diagonal corners you will place a hula hoop and 4 flags/bean bags etc. inside each coned corner. In the other two diagonal corners you will set up a jail. Now the object of the game is to capture all the flags of your opposing team without getting tagged. If you get tagged you must go to their jail and can only leave if someone from your team saves you. You can only take one flag at a time and if you are tagged with a flag you must return the flag and go to jail. Get all 8 flags into your corner and your team wins. If the game goes too long, call time and the team with the most flags, wins.
