5 ITINERARIes for
How does this guide work? You can pick one out of the 5 “emotional keys” we suggest, depending on your mood of the moment. Once you have selected the emotion you have nothing else to do but follow the recommended itinerary, just let yourself be enchanted by the route that will lead you to discover this territory, proposing things to do, places to see and tastes to experience. What’s more, you can follow the rhythm of the music that you can listen using the QR codes at the beginning of every chapter. You can certainly adjust the itinerary as you wish and combine it with the others. And who knows, maybe, following these detours you can find out something new, even about yourself.

THE TOWN
arona
Arona lies in a lovely landscape, surrounded by the hills on beautiful Lake Maggiore with its Borromean islands , and is a pleasant holiday destination for both italian and international tourists. The town is not only a modern, lively city but also a shopping place and is overlooked by the Colossus of Saint Charles, a majestic statue built in honour of Cardinal Saint Charles Borromeo with a height of 23,40 meters. Visitors can climb inside the statue and have a beautiful view of the town through the tiny windows in the saint’s eyes and cassock. Arona and the surroundings were populated since prehistory. It has been a seat of ancient roman fortifications, in the middle ages was dominated by the Torriani family first, then from the Visconti family and finally became a property of the Borromeo family in the first half of XVth century. Today Arona has 14 thousand residents who live gathered in the narrow streets of cobblestone of the old town or in houses facing the water sharing the view with hotels, botanical gardens and luxury villas. Arona is a real gem of nature, art and history and gives prestige to the northern part of the province of Novara.

TOGETHER IN SANGRA HANGING OUT WITH FRIENDS For us guys it’s the perfect place for meeting friends, passing the time away, eating a sandwich on the go when you’re hungry and being together in the afternoon but in the evening as well. In front of the church of San Graziano, dotted with gushing fountains, it’s like a large ‘salotto’ where you know you can always find someone waiting for you.

THE BLACK SHEEP CELEBRATING WITH AN APERITIF How to be happy? I propose a cocktail made of good music, lots of people to meet, a breathtaking view of the lake, things to nibble in abundance on a base of aperitifs for all tastes. To be enjoyed for lunch or dinner. An opportunity to dispel the myth of “the black sheep”!

YUM BURGER EATING A FANTASTIC SANDWICH
Full belly happy heart! If you want a nice appetizing sandwich, here you can find all kinds for every taste. So, when you’re starving, when your throat is battling with your stomach to resist its demands, you can eat your fill, tasting all the kinds of burgers you want, as old Poldo would do.

TREDICINO AND ADRENALINA GOING TO THE FAIR Every March 13th there is the patronal feast, the celebration of the saints Graziano, Fedele, Felino and Carpoforo. Spaceships, labyrinths of mirrors, haunted houses and galleons circling in the sky fill that huge parking lot opposite the station. It’s the ‘Tredicino’, an opportunity to be carefree kids again. Walk in the amusement park and experience the adrenaline rushes as the rides start off! Feel the smell of cotton candy, toasted peanuts and pancakes! It’s impossible not to be happy at the Tredicino.

green therapy LYING DOWN IN THE OPEN AIR
I go to the ‘pratone’ for listening to music, lying down on the grass, chatting with my friends, warming myself in the spring sun or sheltering in the shade when it’s hot. For me it’s a happy place because, when I come here, I like the atmosphere it creates. Then, it makes me smile to look at people using the sports equipment available to all: some of them make such funny faces!

NICE CREAM EATING AN ICE-CREAM
A remedy against sadness is to let yourself be infected by others’ happiness. If the day doesn’t go as you’d like, get an ice cream and look at the smile on the face of all those who come out of the ice-cream parlour! The colours of the flavours, the satisfaction of those who have their own ice cream in their hands, their joy in tasting it… It all becomes the right mix for smiling again. Once I even had three milkshakes in one afternoon!

USELESS BUT USEFUL BUYING NEW CLOTHES Cultivating your own passions helps you escape boredom. Sometimes even futile things distract you and improve your mood. Streetwear and skateboarding have their own world full of colour, accessories and clothes. If you are feeling down... with a real skater’s trick, you can enter a place that will cheer you up.

PASTRIES AND PIES A SWEET BREAKFAST AT THE CAFÉ Imagine spreads of sweets, pastries of every colour and taste. Imagine your sadness drowned in a ‘cannoncino’ or crushed under a mountain of whipped cream. Imagine superb chocolate cakes filled with rivers of custard cream. That’s the way your melancholy will go away and turn into a sweet memory.

SAILING WITH YOUR MIND AN EVENING WITH FRIENDS Look for attractive people to be with and a breath-taking view. Negative thoughts will disappear in the lake in front of you, while you are eating a pizza or drinking an aperitif. Relax in the shade of the ‘Rocca’ or in the sun on a little beach where you can lie and look at the blue of the sky, which is reflected in the waters of the lake. Then, music will complete the atmosphere. You can even go there wearing new clothes for a themed party.

MAGIC STICKS STUFFING YOURSELF WITH SUSHI On bad days, you should roll up your sadness and sink it into the rice: you’ll get ‘nigiri’, ‘uramaki’, ‘hosomaki’. You can’t help but laugh while you’re trying to use the chopsticks in the right way or tasting some new dishes, so different from those you are used to, making strange expressions. Just like for the soy …with the right company, everything takes another flavor!

SMILE : CHEESE ! GOING TO THE PARK
Are you looking for a romantic place? You’ve found it! This is a luxuriant park and across its green extent there are traces of history, remains of what once was a fortress. There is also a pond, a small refreshment area and from here you can have a breathtaking view of Lake Maggiore. Bring here the person you love, enjoy the nature and its silence and take some selfies to save among your memories.

KISS ME AGAIN LOOKING INTO EACH OTHER’S EYES
It’s a magical place. In winter it doesn’t exist but it reappears near the waters of Lake Maggiore as soon as spring arrives. It’s hidden below the street level and its tables, chairs and sofas seem to be spread over the blue waters. We suggest you come for breakfast: in the warmth of the sun you can awake slowly with a ‘cappuccio’ and a croissant. However, if you love the colors of the evening, it’s perfect for a romantic aperitif for two with the sunset on the lake and the company of some of the whitest of swans.

HAND IN HAND WALKING ALONG THE ‘LUNGOLAGO’ The most romantic thing is walking hand in hand along the lake. Arona offers a wonderful lakefront. Here your steps are framed by wisteria in bloom, moored boats at sunset and waters in which the mountains are reflected. When you’re tired, you could suggest a stop for hot chocolate in one of the many bars or an ice cream in the open air on the longest bench you’ve ever seen. Hugging the one you love, of course!

RECIPE FOR LOVE A ROMANTIC DINNER Love needs romantic escapes, gifts of beautiful flowers and eye-to-eye dinners. If you’re trying to win someone over or woo your woman or the man you’re with, you should wear your favourite outfit and come here. There’s perfect silence to share confidences and tell each other about your day. There’s some excellent food to test all your senses, there’s also wine to cheer up the evening and help ease a bit of the embarrassment of the first date. Focus on the person in front of you and leave behind the rest of the world!

BRUSH STROKES OF LOVE GETTING YOUR PORTRAIT PAINTED ‘Verba volant, scripta manent’. However, what remains above all are the images. If you’re looking for an original and unique way to immortalise your love, we have what you need. Enter through the wooden door, turn right and knock at the small door in front of you. A man with a beard, the artist Roberto will welcome you. He’ll offer you a place to sit and a glass of wine and he’ll show you his work. You’ll fall in love with his art, surrounded by paintings, etchings and illustrated tales. Ask him to create a portrait of you two: it could be a romantic way to make your love indelible.

STEP BY STEP A WALK ALONG THE ‘CORSO’
When you are angry, the best thing is to walk. Go to the ‘corso’, stroll back and forth with no hurry. Stop to look in the windows, which are many, and let yourself go with some purchases: a new t-shirt, a handbag or even a slice of pizza. If it’s spring, you can walk under a sky of coloured umbrellas, a colourful visual experience 500 meters long, capable of melting away any anger.

DANCE DANCE DANCE DANCE AND YOU’LL BE OK There are days when anger takes over and somehow it’s necessary to vent it. Some advice? Get dressed comfortably but fashionably, call a couple of friends and leave your house. Here you can find the right music, many girls and boys who want to have fun, and excellent cocktails. Dance, let yourself go, leave everything behind. At the end of the night, you will be tired but you won’t even remember why you were angry.

goal passion RELEASING YOUR ENERGY Being nervous is commonplace, but every neurosis has its own way out. Here, among friends and strangers, you will find an opportunity to have fun, to meet new people over something to drink, maybe while you’re sinking your teeth into a hamburger. You can chat with just a few or decide to mix with the crowd that often comes here to watch football matches. It’ll get late among the shouting, cheering and emotion over a goal. If you kick your anger away, you’ll feel reborn!

RIVERS OF WORDS HAVING A CHAT WITH ‘SAN CARLONE’ When someone has made you angry and you have the irrepressible need to talk about it, call a friend. But if your friends by chance don’t answer the phone, there’s always someone willing to listen to you in Arona. It’s a statue, the second highest in the world and it represents a saint renamed as ‘San Carlone’. Considering his size you can raise your voice as, in any case, he won’t get scared. Moreover, as he is a saint, he’ll have the patience to listen to even the deepest pains without answering back. The only problem is that he isn’t used to talking!

BLUE LAGOON SEND IT TO THE BOTTOM
Water, you know, has a relaxing, soothing and calming power. The shades and tones of blue will give you relief. If you are in Arona, the ‘Lido’ is the best place to go for a dip and let all the negativity slip away. Stroke after stroke, release your tension and push negative thoughts and energies away. Then lie down on the beach and chat with friends, sip a cold drink or eat an ice cream. In winter, when you cannot swim, stop to look at the blue of the sky and dissolve your anger in a steaming cup of tea.

HIDE AND SEEK FINDING YOURSELF
It’s a place where you can gather your ideas and thoughts. It’s a kind of hiding place even if it’s right in the centre. You can sit near the columns which plunge into the lake and stay there, listening to music and seeing the waves coming and going under your feet. It’s a wonderful feeling because it makes you forget everything. It’s a fantastic place if you want to be alone, at peace with yourself. At most, in the company of some white swan!

OTHER PEOPLE’S LIVES WATCHING FROM A BENCH There are days when you’re dying to travel and be on the move and others when you feel the need to stay still. Go to the station, choose a bench, one of those you usually sit on while waiting for a bus, and watch the people leaving and arriving by any means: people going up and down, running, waiting, hugging and greeting each other. Get out of your life for a moment and imagine yourself getting into that of other people.

magic mirror LOOKING INSIDE YOURSELF Magic lake of my soul who is the fairest of them all? If you want to see inside yourself, the lake is the ideal place to look in this mirror. This often requires being alone, but it’s a positive and regenerating solitude. Go to the pier, perhaps not on weekends, look at the water, remember your past, smile on your present and dream of your future. In front of the golden light of a sunset on the lake, you’ll feel like you are in a fairy tale. Sometimes small groups of friends meet here to go skateboarding and try out jumps and acrobatics.

WATCHING PEOPLE SWEETS AND COFFEE Sometimes you have to take your time. If you want to enjoy a little tranquillity over a cup of coffee, this is the right place. It’s a place that welcomes you on its sofas, which caresses with its sweets, and offers you a window from which you can watch the world go by. Who knows where all those people will go?

FISH AND SILENCE GOING FISHING The lake offers many possibilities for taking on activities, from the most dynamic to the most relaxing. Among the latter, even though increasingly less practiced, there is fishing. Under a pergola you can sit on the shore, prepare the fishing rod and throw the hook into the water. It doesn’t matter if fish don’t bite, most of the time what counts is the gesture and the pleasure of waiting. Observe in silence the line floating away, the clouds that pass quickly by. Offer them your thoughts and let them be carried away.
