Our Hidden Gems

Drive Ins You will find two drive-ins

located in our county. Both have two screens for your viewing pleasure. The Delevan Drive In is located on Route 16, just north of the village of Delevan. Open April to September, see what is playing by going to www. delevandrivein.net. The Portville Drive In is located on Route 417 just west of the village of Portville. Go to www.portvilledrivein.com to see what’s playing on the big screen.

Waterloo Springhouse

This springhouse was erected by Henry Somerville in 1892 to cover “Nancy’s Well” in the town of Ellicottville. It was named Waterloo to commemorate Joseph Stafford, who fought in the infamous battle of Waterloo. Nancy’s well was a roadside water source that travelers could use as they journeyed from Ellicottville to Great Valley.

Rocks

Three major rock formations are located in our county. Little Rock City Park in the town of Little Valley, Thunder Rocks is located in Allegany State Park, and Rock City Park is south of Olean on Route 16. Rock City Park is sometimes referred to as the Eighth Wonder of the World. This prehistoric ocean floor is the World’s largest exposure of quartz conglomerate (also called ocean spar or puddingstone) and attracts thousands of visitors yearly.

Little White Chapel The Little White Chapel, located on Route 98 in Great Valley, opened in 2006. This 6’ by 10’ chapel was designed to offer an area for reflection and peace to the passerby.

Outdoor Sculptures The rolling hillsides provide a beautiful canvas for the 250 sculptures that are placed around this 425-acre nature preserve with open meadows, ponds, and ravines. The Amish do not use mechanical machinery to accomplish their day to day tasks. Horses are used for pulling power—these horses are pulling a snow plow.

Route 16 Corridor

The communities along Route 16 are collaborating their efforts to develop and promote this eastern area of Cattaraugus County.

One event that was created was the Sweet 16 Bicycle Tour, a race of varying lengths and difficulties.

As you travel along this corridor, you will pass Lime Lake, the first man made lake that is spring fed and has two outlets, one flows north, the other south.

GeoCache the Enchanted Mountains Geo-Trail

This trail was developed to entice geocachers to explore the hidden parts of the four corners of Cattaraugus County as they travel the highways and byways of the Enchanted Mountains seeking the reward of their quests.

May 21-23, 2010). Be sure to observe the beautiful surroundings as you scout for these sites.

To begin, you will need a GPS (Geographic Positioning System) unit to locate the longitudes and latitudes of the caches. On your computer visit: www. enchantedmountains.com/geotrail for a link to register with Geocaching.com. to retrieve the coordinates and other location information. Registering on Geocaching.com is free.

Finally, claim your reward, which is a different wooden nickel for each of the towns.You can do that by mailing your log sheet to the department listed on it or by visiting the website at http://enchantedmountains.com/ geotrail.You can request your wooden nickel after each find or wait until you have all 16 of them to turn in your completed log. At the end of your quest, if you have collected all 32 Keywords, you will receive a special commemorative geocoin for our trail.

Next, call 1-800-331-0543 to receive your free official leaflet/log that contains room to list all 32 sites (16 sites were released in 2009, 16 more will be released in 2010 at the Allegany State Park Geo Bash,

Then, locate the KEYWORD that is written on the inside cover of each cache container. The KEYWORD is what you will need to record in your log.

While you are here, definitely plan to visit any of our many attractions, fine restaurants and unique shops. Didn’t have time to finish your quest? Then make it an overnight stay by choosing from a variety of accommodations that will fill your needs.

Locating a cache requires perseverance and an inquisitive nature. Can you see the container in the first photo? Lift the rock and you will find your treasure!
