Nature Lovers Take a Hike Miles of trails await. Allegany State Park has a multipurpose 5 mile paved bike/hike path around the lake in the Red House area. The Allegheny River Valley Trail, a nature filled 5.6 mile loop along the Allegheny River and a 2-mile loop around the St. Bonaventure University campus offer a smooth, paved path for feet and wheels.

1-800-331-0543

The Pat McGee Trail stretches 12.1 miles from Salamanca to the village of Cattaraugus. Snowmobilers, bicyclists, cross-country skiers, hikers and equestrians will enjoy the medley of animals, plants and birds. Well behaved leashed pets are welcome on all three.

For the very adventurous, there is approximately 80 miles of the Finger Lakes Trail, which merges with the North Country Trail in Cattaraugus County. Starting in Allegany State Park, at the New York Border in Red House, it twists and turns all the way past Franklinville. The Finger Lakes Trail, all together, is a 558 mile trail that travels through New York from Allegany Mountains to the Catskills. The North Country Trail is a much longer undertaking ranging all the way from North Dakota to New York, being approximately 4,600 miles long. Both of these trails are renowned and the parts that pass through our county are absolutely breathtaking.

Certificate of Excellence 2014 Winner - Rock City Park

See why Little Valley, Olean and Allegany State Park are “rockin’” places to visit. All are along the Cattaraugus County Geology Trail and Rock City Park holds the World’s largest exposure of quartz conglomerate. Rock cities, ancient glacial valleys, vertical-cliffed gorges, and continental divides are just a few of the sights one may see on a day trip through the area. Meander through the pathways created by the huge rocks (sometimes three to four stories high) on your own self-guided tour. Each of these will provide day long entertainment for the family. Pack your picnic basket and spend a day at any one of these magnificent spots, or spend a weekend and see all three!

Explore by Geocaching Geocaching is a form of outdoor treasure hunting which has grown in popularity over the last five years. Individuals or groups use GPS devices to locate the caches, or hidden containers, which can range from “easy to find” or “takes some time to locate”. For those who need any more incentive than the thrill of the hunt, some GeoTrails offer little mementos to signify your finds, and even a Geocoin for completing all or most of the trail. The New York Amish GeoTrail is a very scenic, beginner GeoTrail, taking its participants through the Amish countryside. Visit EMFun.us/geocache or Search for NYAGT on Geocaching.com. There are also many caches located on the North County Trail/Finger Lakes Trail that run through Allegany State Park.

Fish for #Steelhead

Cattaraugus Creek has been voted One of the Top 10 Places to Fish for Steelhead by In-Fisherman Magazine. The fish start entering the creek in September, with October & November being the prime fall months. The fishing remains excellent well into December as long as the streams stay ice-free. March through May is also a great time to catch steelhead in Western New York as streams full of both fresh fish and ones that have completed their spawning ritual are dropping back to the lake where they spend the summer.

The Allegany River within the Seneca Nation Territory is one of two locations in NY where they can be found and is the ONLY Indian Territory to have a

hellbender population. Hellbenders can grow to 29 inches long, have flattened head and body, short stout legs, long rudder-like tail, and can live 70 years. These passive beings feed primarily on crayfish, fish, frogs and a variety of invertebrates. The Hellbender Facility is open to the public, groups, schools, and organizations by appointment only. 3689 Center Rd., Salamanca. 716-9456421 SenecaConservation.com

Cattaraugus County may be the best kept secret in the birding community. With the largest state park in New York, more than 33,000 acres of state forest, and a major migratory corridor to the Mississippi flyway, Cattaraugus County offers birders many opportunities. Allegany State Park supports a large breeding population of Osprey and one of the largest breeding concentrations of Cerulean Warblers found in New York, both of which are state species of special concern.

#Rafting A White Water Experience like no other Feel the excitement and embrace the challenge when negotiating the many passageways and pools of the Cattaraugus Creek through Zoar Valley. Peak times are in the Spring, as early as April. Summer’s low water levels make it a more relaxed journey down the Creek. Autumn rains raise the water level and offer more great trips down the nearly 10 miles of river commonly used. Different spots on the river offer up to Class III rapids and the calmer legs of the journey illustrate great scenery of the adjacent rock formations and wooded areas. The following three companies offer guided raft runs on the Cattaraugus Creek:

#Boating

One of the best parts of summer is being on the water, whether you’re swimming, jet skiing, fishing or just relaxing in the sun. Soak up the sun along 91 miles of natural shoreline on the Allegheny Reservoir. “Put in” at Onoville Marina, the largest inland marina in New York State. Campsites, dock space and fuel dock are available early May through September. You’ll find great dining nearby at the Horseshoe Inn or the Nic-L-Inn or grab something quick at the Bayview Mini-Mart and Ice Cream Parlor. View the beautiful scenery of rolling hills, crystal clear water, and wooded areas as you are drifting or speeding along. No boat? No worries! The Bayview Mini-Mart also provides boat rentals. Another great place to launch your boat into the Allegheny River, is Friends boat launch in the Quaker area of Allegany State Park, just 2.5 miles south of Rt. 86 on Rt. 280. Both Onoville Marina and Friends feature paved launch sites that are perfect for pontoons, motor boats or kayaks. Boating & Rec Festival at OnoFest  July 25, 2015

#SkyHigh! Be a Tree Climbing Ninja Challenge yourself at Sky High Adventure Park at Holiday Valley Resort. Plan your attack through a series of platforms and “bridges” where the challenge is to figure out how to get across to the next platform. The platforms are built in the trees and the bridges connect the platforms. The bridge may be a log, hanging chunks of wood or other obstacles. There are 13 courses with varying levels of difficulty and the more difficult the course, the higher up it is in the trees. Most courses include a zipline, some having more than one! Sky High is suitable for visitors age seven(five for Climbing Forest) and up and opens early May through November. Reservations are required on weekends and suggested for weekdays at the Aerial Park. #MTB Take to the Mountains on a Bike Holiday Valley Resort has a 4-5 mile “race loop” that begins at the Holiday Valley Training Center and goes across the ridge line of the resort where you can choose to ride the wider and more forgiving cross country trails or the skinny winding single track to the top. For the adventurous, there are plenty

of single track trails off the main route. At Eagle or Tannenbaum you can venture out across the logging roads behind the Valley and on to the 35+ miles of WNYMBA trails in the State Forest. International Mountain Biking Association has rated the trails around Ellicottville as “Epic” so have at it! It’s all pedal power at Holiday Valley... no lift service, and no charge to

use the trails. Please remember these common sense rules...wear a helmet, ride with a friend, bring a map and stay off the golf course and Sky High Adventure Park. Mountain bike rentals are available at the Inn at Holiday Valley by calling (716) 699-2345.

 The Bike and Bean has Monday Night rides @6PM (weather permitting). Mountain biking is a popular activity in Allegany State Park and tops the list of favorite places for a mountain bike adventure in Western New York during the summer months. In the winter it is a renowned cross-country ski center. Located in the northern half of Allegany State Park, The Art Roscoe Ski Touring Area offers some of the finest groomed cross country ski and mountain bike trails in the Northeast. The 25 miles of multi-use trails attract mountain bikers in the summer and fall. The wide trails, great for

beginners, wind through mixed oak and hardwood old-growth forests and offer spectacular views of the surrounding mountains, forests and Red House Lake. AlleganyNordic.org

Golden Hill State Forest offers two loops, one blazed red and the other blue. It’s a little off the beaten path and gets a lot less use than the much larger Ellicottville trail system, but the trails are just as good and offer plenty of riding to keep you occupied all afternoon. Seneca Nation of Indians

The Seneca Nation is one of the original Five Nations of the Haudenosaunee, or Iroquois Confederacy. This union was created to bring peace to the Haudenosaunee, or “People of the Longhouse,” as they call themselves. Comprised of chiefs from the Seneca, Cayuga, Onondaga, Oneida, and Mohawk, it operated under an unwritten code of conduct known as the Great Law of Peace. This union was later expanded to include the Tuscarora, becoming the Six Nations of the Iroquois Confederacy.

The Haudenosaunee tribes’ contiguous lands originally stretched across what is now known as New York State, similar to the shape of a longhouse. The Seneca controlled trade and traffic at the western edge of the Iroquois territory, which is why they are referred to as “Keepers of the Western Door.” The Mohawks, who lived near the Hudson River, are called “Keepers of the Eastern Door.” Like the other Iroquois tribes, the

Seneca historically lived in longhouses, which were long, narrow bark-covered dwellings that housed several families from the same clan. The Seneca are known as O-non-dowa-gah, (pronounced: Oh-n’own-dough-wahgah) or “Great Hill People.”

Traditional Seneca culture is defined by the clan system. There are eight clans among the Seneca, divided into animals: Bear, Beaver, Turtle, and Wolf; and the birds: Deer, Hawk, Heron, and Snipe. Clan membership is matrilineal – it is passed on to children through their mothers. The Seneca would hunt, fish, farm and gather their food. Staples of the Seneca crop and diet were corn, beans, and squash, which are referred to as the Three Sisters and considered to be special gifts from the Creator. Everything that the Seneca historically used in their daily life came from the land or nature, including clothing, tools, cooking utensils, crafts and other materials.

Keeping the Legacy Alive

The Seneca have lived in and cared for the forests, valleys,

and shorelines of what is now Western New York, since before recorded history. The riches of this land and these waters are revered among the Seneca, as is their obligation to pass along this legacy. Today the Seneca Nation has over 7,600 enrolled members and holds title to three main territories in Western New York, specifically, the Cattaraugus, Allegany, and Oil Spring territories. The Seneca Nation continues to support its own people and surrounding communities with a variety of cultural, educational and economic efforts. Through the enterprises of the Nation, revenues are generated that provide necessary services and programs to all tribal members, especially its youth and elder population. Seneca culture and values remain strong and intact. The vibrancy of their rich heritage is evident in the cultural events, dance, music, arts, crafts and foods that visitors are invited to experience. The Seneca-Iroquois National Museum showcases both permanent and temporary exhibits that introduce visitors to the culture and history of the Onöndowa’ga:’ and Hodinöhsö:ni’ including a Longhouse and a clan animal exhibit. The museum is located at 814 Broad Street, Salamanca, NY 14779. Visit them online at SenecaMuseum.org to plan your trip.

Tips for Visiting Seneca Territory:

• Your general guide should be to exercise common courtesy. • All communities contain a diversity of tribal members who practice varying degrees of tradition. Also, while some reservations may have characteristics similar to another, each is home to tribes that have distinct cultures and histories. Therefore, what is acceptable in one community or at one event may not be appropriate at another. • Show respect to the people and the rules. Treat the residents with courtesy and observe the signs that have been put in place to preserve the beauty and uniqueness of the land and people. Pay close attention to posted traffic and road signs and do not litter. • Be aware of which places are public and which are private or restricted. If you are unsure, do not enter. • Some communities may have policies about photography, sketching and audio/video recording. Visitors should always ask for permission. • Some of the Tribal buildings and structures may be several hundred years old and damage easily; do not climb on walls or other structures. Do not disturb or

remove animals, plants, rocks or artifacts including pot shards, as Tribal and federal laws prohibit the removal of such items. • If you are fortunate enough to be in attendance at a dance or ceremonial event, dress in a modest, kempt, and appropriate manner. Avoid excessive talking, questioning, and applause. Be a respectful observer. Check in advance whether photography is allowed. If not, by all means respect that rule. • Be a polite and attentive listener. • If food or a meal is offered to you, be polite and accept it. • Do some research before your trip. Knowing more about the culture, history, and traditions of the people who live on the Territory you plan to visit will enhance your experience and help you avoid mistakes in etiquette. There is information for visitors on the websites SenecaNation.com and www.SNI.org, including a tourism page, a calendar of events that are open to the public, and rules of etiquette or protocol. For more information on the Seneca Nation of Indians, please visit SenecaNation.com or contact the Tribal Tourism office by phone at 716-532-4900 or email at info@SenecaNation.com. Travelers can learn about the SenecaIroquois cultures and history in Native American displays in the Seneca-Iroquois National Museum and the SenecaAllegany Resort & Casino in Salamanca, NY.

Observe Old Order Amish

Cattaraugus County, with its vast countryside ideal for farming, is home to many Old Order Amish. This is a religious gro up of people who generally do not conform to the modern or “English” way of livi ng. It is considered of the Old Order because this group adheres to the stricter guidelines and has resisted changing with the times. They use no electricity, have no running water, and dress in plain clothes hand-made by the women in the family. Amish are incredibly gifted, known for their craftsmanship. Many different shops and stands can be found roadside to sell their handworks, except on Sundays and some holiday s. Be sure that you will come upon a buggy or two, and see these interesting people walking or working in their field s.
