One Snowy Christmas Eve Twas the night before Christmas and out on the ranch, The pond was froze over and so was the branch. The snow was piled up belly-deep to a mule; The kids were all home on vacation from school. And happier young folks you never did see, Just sprawled all around a-watching TV. Then suddenly some time around eight o’clock, There came a surprise that gave them a shock! The power went off, the TV went dead! When Grandpa came in from out in the shed. With an armload of wood, the house was all dark. “Just what I expected,” they heard him remark. “Them REA wires must be down from the snow, Seems sorter like times on the ranch long ago.” “I’ll hunt up some candles,” said Mom. “With their light and the fireplace, I reckon we’ll make out all right.” The teenagers all seemed enveloped in gloom, Then Grandpa came back from a trip to his room. Uncased his old fiddle and started to play, That old Christmas song about bells on a sleigh. Mom started to sing, and the first thing they knew, Both Pop and the kids were all singing it, too! They sang Christmas carols, they sang “Holy Night,” Their eyes all a-shine in the ruddy firelight. They played some charades Mom recalled from her youth, And Pop read a passage from God’s Book of Truth. They stayed up till midnight, and would you believe Those youngsters agreed ‘twas a fine Christmas Eve. Grandpa rose early sometime before dawn, And when the kids wakened, the current was on. “The REA sure got the line fixed up quick,” Said Grandpa—and no one suspected his trick.

”
The Power of the Battery
ne of the holy grails of the energy industry has long been cheap energy storage. Unlike almost all other consumer goods, electricity is created and used in almost the same instant, and storing it has long proven to be difficult and expensive. However, in the last decade, the price of batteries has fallen dramatically, and new energy storage models are emerging. One model that has captured the public’s imagination is residential energy storage, which allows you to store electricity at your home for your own use. Homeowners may be interested in energy storage for a variety of reasons. It could be used to store excess energy from their rooftop solar panels. Storage could take advantage of time-of-use rates to buy power off-peak when it’s cheaper, or, to have backup power if the lights go out. There are different energy storage technologies. First, for storing excess energy from solar panels, New Mexico’s electric co-ops have net metering policies in place that allow members to receive a financial or energy credit for that energy on their next bill. For this reason, Mateo Jaramillo, Tesla’s director of powertrain business development, calls net metering “essentially a free battery.”
Next, batteries can be used to lower peak charges for those members who pay a variable price for electricity depending on their timeof-use. In fact, most already have an energy storage device in their home—their water heater. Some electric co-ops control water heaters as part of their demand response programs, and some offer rebates or other incentives to participate in utility-run programs. Third, batteries such as the Tesla PowerWall, assuming they’re fully charged when the lights go out, can keep a home running for about four to six hours at normal consumption. If used only for critical loads, the battery can last much longer. For many consumers, purchasing a residential standby generator would be a cheaper option. However, generators are noisy and potentially dangerous if run inside the home without proper ventilation, and useless without fuel, which can be hard to obtain during a weather-related emergency. Energy storage technologies continue to evolve rapidly, and it’s likely they will be even more cost competitive for many applications within a few years. Back in March of this year, the New Mexico Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department (EMNRD)
Keven J. Groenewold. P.E. Executive Vice President New Mexico Rural Electric Cooperative Association
through its Energy Conservation and Management Division applied for a U.S. Department of Energy state energy planning grant. Due in part to the broad support from New Mexico electric cooperatives, ENMRD received Federal funding to initiate the next phase of the statewide energy planning effort that started with the 2015 New Mexico Energy Policy and Implementation Plan. Storage will be one of the topics in this planning process. As programs like this continue to develop and proliferate, consumers can expect to see more batteries in and around the home. There will also be discussions over retail rate design to properly price, and account for integration of these new technologies. New technologies are changing the traditional utility model and traditional rate design. New rate design has to be equally innovative. This ensures folks who decide to participate and those who choose not to participate are treated fairly. After all, co-op members own their utility and have a vested interest in keeping the co-op service reliable and financially sound. It’s what we’ve been doing for the last 80 years. And to everyone—have a safe and happy holiday season.

uring the final month of 2016, Venus increasingly asserts its traditional role as the proverbial “evening star” as it shines brilliantly in the western sky after sunset. Already setting an hour and a half after the end of dusk at the beginning of December, this interval increases to over two hours by month’s end, and it remains such for the first few months of 2017. Mercury also makes an appearance in our evening skies this month, being visible low in the southwestern sky during twilight for the first two weeks of the month before disappearing into the sunlight. Mars, meanwhile, remains well up in the southwest after dusk as it continues trailing behind Earth, and sets at approximately 9:30 p.m. Over in the morning sky, the giant planet Jupiter rises in the east around 2:00 a.m. and is well up in the eastern sky by the beginning of dawn. Saturn passes behind the sun (as seen from Earth) early in December and begins poking its way into the dawn sky by the end of the year. The two large worlds in the more outer solar system are also well placed for viewing this month. Uranus, traveling slowly through the stars of the constellation Pisces, is well

up in the southern sky during the evening hours, and can be detected with the unaided eye if one knows where to look and is located in a dark rural site. Neptune, traveling through Aquarius, is fairly high up in the southwest during the early evening hours and can be detected with a pair of binoculars. The Geminids, one of the strongest of the annual meteor showers, peak on the night of the 13th, however this is also the night of the full moon and thus most of the display will be wiped out in the bright sky. A weaker shower, the Ursids, which appears to come from near the “bowl” of the Little Dipper, peaks around December 22. Normally the Ursids only produce about 10 meteors per hour at most, however they have occasionally produced much more intense displays. They are associated with Comet Tuttle, which returns about every 14 years and which most recently returned in 2008.

On The Menu BY SHARON NIEDERMAN 1 jalapeño, deveined, seeds removed 1-inch chunk fresh ginger root, peeled ¼ tsp. green chile powder (if available) ❧ Place cranberries in food processor. Squeeze in juice of one orange, cut orange in quarters, and add it, including peel. Peel the other orange and add it in sections. Add sugar and cilantro. Pulse for 1-2 minutes, until well-blended, while keeping some texture. Slice onions and jalapeños into the mixture. Add ginger root and process with the cranberries. Add green chile powder to taste, blend. This makes 2-3 cups, keeps well and can be made ahead of time. It gets hotter as it sits.
Holiday Happiness L
ike good accessories that make an outfit truly outstanding, it’s sometimes the side dishes that set off the flavors and make the roast at the center of the table memorable. Here are a few of my favorite holiday accompaniments to the main event that play with holiday ingredients I think your family will like. And these dishes may all be made ahead of time.
Cinnamon-Ancho Pumpkin Soup
Inspired by Rick Bayless through Florence Fabricant of the New York Times. 2 Tbs. olive oil 1 large onion, chopped 1 tsp. ancho chile powder 1 tsp. cinnamon 32 ozs. canned pumpkin 4 cups water ½ cup toasted pepitas 8 ozs. sour cream or crème fraiche ❧ Heat 2 tablespoons olive oil in soup pot. Add chopped onion. Saute until golden. Add ancho and cinnamon. Stir well. Saute a few more minutes. Add pumpkin plus 4 cups water. Stir well. Add half the pepitas. Simmer ten minutes, stirring. Do not boil. Using either a blender or

an immersion blender, puree soup. Before serving, place a dollop of sour cream in each bowl Garnish with toasted pepitas. Serves 4.
Holiday Cranberry Salsa
Cranberry season is brief. These beautiful berries are on the supermarket shelves only a short time. So you can make extras of this holiday favorite relish and freeze some for Christmas dinner. Good with the meal or before as an appetizer salsa with blue corn chips. From Hellish Relish: Sizzling Salsas and Devilish Dips from the Kitchens of New Mexico, by Sharon Niederman. 1 (12 oz.) package fresh cranberries 2 whole oranges ½ cup sugar 1 bunch cilantro ½ medium onion (optional)

Hot Mulled Cider
An easy to fix holiday beverage that makes the house smell amazing with the fragrance of the season. It’s a lighter alternative to eggnog. What’s important is that the spices be fresh. If you have some left over from last year, throw them away and get new ones. ½ gallon apple cider or juice 2 oranges 2 apples 2 cinnamon sticks 4 whole cloves nutmeg, preferably whole or ½ tsp. ground ❧ Bring cider to simmer, either stovetop or in crockpot. Energy Sense
BY PATRICK KEEGAN AND AMY WHEELESS
Seal Tight, Ventilate Right
D
ear Pat: Now that winter is here, I’d like to make my home more comfortable by keeping cold air out. I’m planning to have a contractor inspect and seal air leaks. However, a neighbor mentioned I could seal up my home too much and cause ventilation problems. Is this true?—Tricia Dear Tricia: You’re certainly on the right track. Sealing air leaks is usually one of the best energy efficiency investments a homeowner can make. A typical home leaks, on average, about half of its air every hour, which is like having your kitchen window open all day, every day. Sealing air leaks can also eliminate drafts that keep your home from being cozy. However, it is possible to seal up some homes so “tight” they have little ventilation, which can contribute to indoor air quality problems or a build-up of moisture. The challenge is to achieve the best home performance and energy savings while maintaining air quality. The first step is to eliminate or reduce indoor air pollutants, such as smoke or chemicals. Experts then recommend sealing air leaks as much as possible and installing mechanical ventilation, as needed. Simple mechanical ventilation can be controlled
10

and consistent, as opposed to “natural” ventilation from air leaks, which can result in a home being too drafty in more extreme weather and not ventilated enough in milder weather. The best way to inspect your home for air leaks is to hire a contractor or energy auditor who will conduct a blower door test, which uses a powerful fan to measure the air infiltration rate. During the test, the contractor will be able to locate and seal air leaks. After sealing, the contractor can measure the resulting air infiltration rate and talk with you about any ventilation needs. There is no simple way to determine how much mechanical ventilation your home will need—it depends on a combination of factors, including the rate of air flow into your home, what kind of climate you live in, the layout and occupancy of your home and whether there are other indoor air quality concerns, such as radon or combustion appliances like gas furnaces. Mechanical ventilation systems allow for controlled air movement and a rate of ventilation in your home on which you can depend, helping ensure good indoor air quality and appropriate levels of moisture. There are two primary categories of mechanical ventilation. Many people are familiar with spot ventilation systems— these are the fans you

find above your oven range, in your laundry room, in your bathroom and perhaps above a garage workshop. They focus on removing moist air and indoor air pollutants at the source. Generally, these fans only work when you turn them on, but you can install condensation sensors or humidistats so the fans will turn on whenever they sense a higher moisture content in the air. Keep in mind running these fans constantly can take too much heated or cooled air out of your home, increasing your energy bills. Whole-house ventilation circulates air throughout the home and introduces the right amount of outside air. There are four categories of wholehouse ventilation systems; determining which method is best for you will depend on your home’s needs, your budget and your climate: Talk with your energy auditor or home performance contractor about whether you need additional
mechanical ventilation, and if so, which system would work best for your living space.
4
Whole-House Ventilation Systems
1. Exhaust ventilation systems: Fans pull air out of your home, which increases infiltration from the outside, either through air leaks or vents.
2. Supply ventilation systems: Fans bring outside air into your home.
3. Balanced ventilation systems: Both supply and exhaust fans circulate air in and out of the home.
4. Energy recovery ventilation systems: Fans, combined with heat exchangers, modulate the temperature and humidity of incoming air into your home.

Holiday Fun with Boats and Trains BY ARIANA KRAMER
T
he Land of Enchantment is full of interesting holiday activities that emphasize light, family and the unique scenery of our state. Two fine examples are the Elephant Butte Holiday Luminaria Beachwalk and the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad's Christmas Train rides. Both offer one-of-a-kind family-oriented activities while raising money for charitable causes.
Glowing Boats and Luminarias The Elephant Butte Holiday Luminaria Beachwalk takes place on Saturday, December 10 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. with a Boat Parade at 6:30 p.m. The Beachwalk is a long-standing tradition, now in its 21st year, and sponsored jointly by the Elephant Butte Chamber of Commerce and the Elephant Butte State Park. Visitors drive into the picturesque Elephant Butte State Park, where they are welcomed by a festive sight with luminarias, bonfires and boats decorated in lights. The cost to attend is the park entrance fee. “We have 4,000 luminarias that line the entire entrance way, loop down to the parking area, and down to the beach path,” says Kim Skinner, event chair, who serves on the board of the Elephant Butte Chamber of Commerce. “Once you park, you walk down to the event site where there are 25

campsite hosts with bonfires.” Hay rides are also available.Campsite hosts are businesses, organizations and individuals. Each host provides free refreshments ranging from cookies and popcorn to chile and posole. The hosts decorate their campsites and local church groups gather for caroling. Donations are collected, with funds raised going to the Make-A-Wish Foundation and to the Friends of Elephant Butte Lake State Park's fireworks fund. Some of the hosts, like American Legion and Sierra Electric Cooperative have come for years, making this an annual tradition. According to Jenny Stuckmeyer, member services coordinator for Sierra Electric Cooperative, the Luminaria Beachwalk is the yearly event that draws the most employee participation. For the past seven years the cooperative has hosted its own campsite. Prior to that, the cooperative partnered with another area business and helped them to host. “It's a really awesome event for local residents and for people coming to visit the area,” says Stuckmeyer. The Lighted Boat Parade departs from Marina del Sur, with the boats circling in front of the campsites. “You can see it from everywhere,” Skinner says. The boat parade is followed by an awards ceremony and Christmas party at the Elephant Butte Inn. “It's happy, it's positive, it's colorful,” promises Skinner,
summarizing the Luminaria Beachwalk. “The walkways, marina and boats are all decorated. It's truly magical.” For more details call 575-744-4708.
All Aboard In the northern part of the state, the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad offers unique Christmas train rides. The Chama train is a member of Northern Rio Arriba Electric Cooperative. Departing from Chama, the train travels a round trip ride of about 45 to 60 minutes in duration. “We run about seven or eight trains a day,” says Lee Bates, director of marketing and communications for the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad. “We'll have Santa and the elves on the trains, we'll serve hot beverages and snacks, and lead Christmas carols.” Trains also depart from Antonito, in southern Colorado. The Christmas train rides will be held on Saturday, December 3 and Sunday, December 4 in Antonito and Saturday, December 10 and Sunday, December 11 in Chama. This marks the third year the Railroad is hosting the Christmas train rides. Bates expects more than 5,000 passengers will ride the Christmas trains.

“We've had huge, positive feedback from everyone who has ridden the train,” says Bates. He emphasized the train is an especially popular treat for large families because of its affordability. There is no fee to ride the Christmas train. Each passenger is asked to bring a non-perishable food item and a toy. Collected donations are distributed to families and schools in New Mexico and Colorado with the help of the Chama Food Bank for Echo Food Bank in Farmington; El Paso County Toys for Tots; and Colorado Cares Colorado Shares Food Bank. The narrow-gauge track between Antonito and Chama was built in 1880 as part of the San Juan Extension of the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad. In 1969, the tracks were abandoned and dismantled. The most scenic part of the route, along with the train equipment and buildings was saved by railway preservationists. In 1970, Colorado and New Mexico bought the track from Antonito to Chama, nine steam locomotives, over 130 freight and work cars, and the Chama yard and maintenance facility. The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad was born. The Cumbres & Toltec provides year-round recreational train rides including daily rides, sunset dinner trips and special rides focused on the geologic or botanical features of the scenery. Book Chat BY PHAEDRA GREENWOOD
POEMS FROM THE RIO GRANDE
THE TOMBSTONE RACE STORIES
By Rudolfo Anaya 2015, 128 pages, $16.95 University of Oklahoma Press 405-325-3200
By José Skinner 2016, 200 pages, $19.95 University of New Mexico Press 505-277-2346; www.unmpress.com
Anaya, one of the most highly respected and prolific Chicano authors in the Southwest, raised the literary benchmark with Bless Me, Ultima, a novel ripe with mythological and lyrical prose. In this fine book of poems, Anaya’s heartfelt sentiments rise like a mist from “The season of the dying light…” He harks back to Aztlán, to Machu Picchu, and offers an elegy on the death of César Chávez. The poet resurrects Christmas morning in “distant Sangre de Cristo villages” when “our red rooster crows ‘Hosanna! Hosanna!’” He welcomes Walt Whitman as he strides across the llano. In Anaya’s imagination the cat books first class passage on Noah’s ark, and a magpie in Aspen wears a tux to corporate dinners, has its feathers done at a Unisex salon and pays with American Express. Hurray for this delightful book with a beautiful cover to add to your collection.
Here’s Latino realism at its best: straight up, sometimes humorous, sometimes brutally honest with Hispaño curses and slang, pithy and poignant. Set in the Vietnam Era, The Tombstone Race, is written from a sister’s point of view; she discovers her brother Alex is gay and about to dodge the draft. Sis not only bankrolls Alex but, to save face for her family, she sparks a rumor he has run off with the Hell’s Angels. Skinner’s dynamic tales lasso the reader with the skill of a true artist. So who is this co-founder and former director of the MFA program in creative writing at the University of Texas-Pan American, author of Flight and Other Stories? According to his website, after the Sandinista revolution he taught sustainable farming in Nicaragua. In New Mexico he supported himself as a translator and interpreter in the criminal courts. Five gritty stars!

THE RIO GRANDE: A RIVER GUIDE TO THE CHRISTMAS THAT THE GEOLOGY AND LANDSCAPES OF SAVED PIE TOWN NORTHERN NEW MEXICO By Susan A. McCoy By Paul W. Bauer 2011, 122 pages, $18.95 New Mexico Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources 575-835-5490; www.geoinfo.nmt.edu If you’re in love with the Rio Grande, this full-color, spiralbound, waterproof guide includes everything you’ve never known about the northern section of the river such as water quality, river management, hazards and hydrology, petroglyphs, access, hiking trails and history, landscape and significant geological events. These attractive pages provide some fascinating historic photos, such as one of the John Dunn Bridge in Arroyo Hondo, plus excellent maps, charts, and advice on basic river safety. The guide follows the course of the river 153 miles from La Sauses, Colorado to Cochiti Dam in New Mexico. It’s divided into 11 river stretches that include some exciting whitewater runs: Taos Box, Racecourse and White Rock Canyon. River maps were developed from a base of aerial photographs. What a treasure trove of information. Five stars!
2009, 50 pages, $23.99 Authorhouse 800-839-8640; www.authorhouse.com When they first arrived, the picturesque hamlet of Pie Town looked like a sparkly Christmas card to Pastor Preachit and his wife. But they soon discovered this was a town of “sad and angry people.” The two bakeries were in bitter competition with each other, and a passel of insolent villagers did not welcome the new “do-gooders” who would, no doubt, meddle in their affairs. In fact, the Christmas Spirit was not flourishing anywhere. The conflict had begun with the pie contest that ended in a tie and a food fight that left everyone sticky. So they made a law against townspeople baking pies and “Pie Town became only a shell of what it had been.” But the Preacher and Mrs. Preachit came up with a project the whole town could participate in that would spark forgiveness and goodwill toward all. Humor, pathos and charming illustrations. To submit a book for review: include contact information and where to order.

Vecinos BY FLORENCE DEAN
Loving Thy Furry Friends Cindy Blanton’s little white car zips into my driveway and my two Schnauzers begin barking and dancing in excitement. They recognize her vehicle and know today is GROOMING day! We exchange a few barely audible words over the dog racket and she grabs leashes to lead Zoe and Faith to her car; a few hours later the pups bounce in the front door, head for a quick drink and then turn circles so we can see how pretty they are.
I
met Blanton when my husband and I moved to High Rolls and were delighted to find she would pick up and deliver our dogs for grooming, as she does for all her local customers. When we finally had an opportunity to chat, I discovered Blanton is also a licensed American Kennel Club (AKC) Agility Judge. She travels throughout the country, usually twice a month, to judge Canine Agility Competitions and is also licensed by the AKC as Trail Secretary for Agility. Her duties as secretary are to take in entries and do the scoring. Blanton and her husband David moved to High Rolls in 1996 from Chicago where she and her sister operated a mobile grooming business, after graduating from
16
December 2016
grooming school in Illinois. Since there was an established grooming business in High Rolls at that time, she decided to become an AKC Agility Judge. She set up a training course at her home and acquired a dog to begin training. Unfortunately, that animal did not take to agility; however, her next dog—a rescue named Iggy—trained and competed as Blanton worked toward judge status. To become an AKC Agility Judge, one must compete consistently in Agility for five years, with your own or another dog, in specifically titled competitions. Graduates can then compete to higher levels of competition. The American Kennel Club defines Agility “as a way to demonstrate a dog’s willingness to

work with his handler in a variety of situations. Agility is an athletic event that requires conditioning, concentration, training, and teamwork. Dogs and handlers must negotiate an obstacle course while racing against the clock.” Though Agility is a relatively new event, only in existence for about 20 years, it has become the most popular event sponsored by the AKC. For the judges, events can often take all day with a maximum of 330 runs allowed for one judge. As she worked her way up to Judge licensing, Blanton worked with three dogs; the first, Iggy, acquired MX and AXJ ratings and retired from competition at age 12. Iggy was followed by a Sheltie named Bart who retired when another Sheltie named Dash was ready to compete. Dash will soon retire from competition at age 11, after earning a MACH (Master Agility Champion). Currently, Blanton is showing a seven-year-old
Australian Shepard named Spirit competing at the Masters Level. And, a one-year-old female Sheltie named Edge will begin to show as she reaches 15 months. In 2009, Blanton passed the AKC Testing Seminar’s required eight tests. After this, she had to judge two Open Novice shows as a Provisional Judge. Her first show as a licensed judge was in Fargo, ND. Now, she is listed by AKC and will be going to Cedar Rapids, Iowa in December for the Agility Component of the Iowa City Dog Obedience Club show. Blanton currently owns four dogs, Spirit, Dash, Bruno (a Dachshund/ Yorkie mix), and Edge.

nother season has come and gone. The nasally drone of insects rising to a crescendo like waves of heat vapors over black asphalt is a sound of a summer past. Nesting birds have fledged their young and headed south. Well, most of them have moved to warmer climes. Luckily, some birds never leave, and some bird species actually visit here only in the winter. You have the opportunity to watch them up close, and contribute to scientific endeavors. Project FeederWatch is a citizenscience program with the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology you can participate in over the coming winter months. Your involvement will contribute data to scientists to help better understand birds and bird populations. Project FeederWatch is an organized survey whereby bird watchers of any level of expertise or interest can participate. All you have to do is identify and tally birds at your feeders in your yard, or wherever you might feed birds, on a regular basis over the course of the survey. The survey started in November, but you can join at any time. It runs to mid-April. You could be among the 20,000 birders across the continent contributing to science. And the time commitment to participate is minimal. Feeder watchers count the number of birds at their feeders on two days every two weeks, counting the great-
est number of birds by species at any one time. Along with species and numbers, feeder watchers note habitats where they are feeding the birds, the weather conditions, and keep a look out for diseases, like the eye ailment, conjunctivitis in finches. The Cornell Lab of Ornithology provides each feeder watcher with instructions to ensure birds are counted in a standardized way across the country. You will also receive a FeederWatch Handbook with tips on how to successfully attract birds to feeders, an identification poster of the most common feeder birds in our area, and a
calendar. Your data can be reported easily online. There is an $18 fee. Participants also receive Winter Bird Highlights, an annual summary of FeederWatch findings, and the results of your and other feeder watcher contributions. This successful and fun program is in its 30th year. As winter approaches, consider being a feeder watcher and enjoying all the birds that come to visit. To learn more about joining Project FeederWatch and to sign up online, visit FeederWatch.org. To register by phone, call the Cornell Lab toll-free at 866-989-2473.
