between us
Actors may be the artists I love the best. Here’s the simple story of how the Alliance came to be producing A Steady Rain. An actor called me. A crazy good one, in fact, named Jeff Perry. And he asked me if I knew this play by Keith Huff that had two killer roles for a pair of brave actors. I did know the play, and knew the demands it puts on its players, who are given a wildly emotional story to tell and very little to hide behind. Jeff had directed a pair of guys in this show in Los Angeles and was knocked out by them, and wanted as many people to see their work as possible. Would we be interested in mounting a production at the Alliance? I love a lot about this. I love the fact of an actor going to bat for two of his colleagues because he believes in their work. I love a play that trusts actors enough to put them on a bare stage and let their prodigious gifts do the rest. And I love that the co-founder of Steppenwolf — still the country’s gold standard for actor-driven theatre — is picking up the phone and making this production happen. There’s a notion in our art form that goes back to its earliest days — that two planks and a passion can make a moment that can change lives. The two planks are the space in front of you right now. The passion belongs to Jeff Perry, Tom Kelly and Sal Viscuso. You’re in very good hands.

QUESTION: Have you spent time in Atlanta before this? PERRY: I know I’ve been in the airport often, changing flights. I’m trying to think if I’ve ever stepped foot on the streets. Either way, I feel like an excited rookie working there. Q: How do your deep roots in Chicago influence this staging of A Steady Rain? PERRY: I hope positively. I was drawn to the playwright’s perspective about the region and the fabric of these characters. Like most great stories, there are specific pressures that any of us can empathize with. I suppose my background helped to impress upon me the authenticity of these two Chicago police officers’ lives. Q: Cubs or White Sox? PERRY: Cubs. I grew up in the northern suburbs,

here’s a method to the madness in which Jeff Perry is engulfed. You take each role’s expectations in stride, he says. And you practice what you preach. Though most acclaimed among the masses for playing sinister White House Chief of Staff Cyrus Beene on the ABC series “Scandal,” Perry, 60, has carved out a distinguished niche for himself as a theatrical savant. His reputation an acting coach at Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre, which he co-founded in 1974, precedes him as the Alliance Theatre presents his directorial staging of the Chicago-set police thriller A Steady Rain. A few hours before taping the first scenes of “Scandal’s” fifth season on an L.A. soundstage, Perry peeled back the layers of his upbringing in the Windy City as well as his advocacy and aspirations for the craft of acting.
Rain is as much a character in this police drama as the two cops who wrestle with truth.
so that was my team even though my dad was from the South Side. Q: Deep dish or thin crust? PERRY: Not to be sacrilegious, but I love my thin, crunchy crust pizza. I won’t turn down a deep dish. But I prefer the thin. Q: What’s the difference between the gratification you get from directing and teaching, and the satisfaction of starring in a hit film or TV series? PERRY: Honestly, they feed off each other in ways that are completely mundane and in other ways mysterious. I find myself thinking of things I tell my students to do and then think, “You fool, just do it yourself.” There’s a beautiful synergy between the two. Q: People say you’re very good at both. Why is that, do you think? PERRY: Because I paid them all off! ... I hope if people feel that way they know I love doing it and I’m trying to get better at it. If you don’t get better at your craft with people like I’ve been lucky enough to be around for 40 years, you should probably pick up another line of work.
Q: What do you do to ease the pressure and refresh yourself for more work? PERRY: I was just Googling things about the L.A. Clippers. My dad turned me into a basketball nut. That’s one of my main relaxing passions. Watching basketball. Q: With so much media scrutiny on police conduct these days, how does this version of A Steady Rain have to adapt to public perceptions? PERRY: You have to honor the circumstances that it was written in. Even though it’s a very different decade and there were no cellphones capturing every event, the difference in time really melts away. During a cataclysmic summer two cops who had a deep, deep, deep love and friendship for each other — due to circumstances not and of their own making — had some really bad luck come their way. The media jumps on the situation immediately, and it has gigantic reverberations. It’s just an earlier dynamic of the same thing. Q: In a dialogue-heavy play like this, do you want your actors to treat it like a waltz or a sparring session every night? PERRY: Those aren’t mutually exclusive. I love the ALLIANCETHEATRE.ORG

range. It has some of the grace and, God knows, it has some of the violence. Q: If you could play one of the roles in A Steady Rain, which would you choose? PERRY: Uh … I think I’d choose Denny. It’s a bit more challenging. The Alpha-male Italian hothead is different by far from my own makeup. Q: What’s your advice to aspiring actors? PERRY: Figure out how to keep the love for your profession alive. Q: What do you still have left to accomplish? PERRY: I’m still curious. I love learning. I fell in love when with theater when I was 19 and saw two geniuses in their 80s star in No Man’s Land [John Gielgud, Ralph Richardson]. You should be able to do that until they lay you to rest. I’m just trying to keep my memory and health intact. Every new play, every new episode of “Scandal” makes me happy. I get a kick out of the art form. A. After a well-received 2007 run at Chicago Dramatists, Keith Huff’s A Steady Rain gained prestige from a sold-out 2009 Broadway run featuring Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig. This duologue’s interrogation of characters pressed by the weight of their ever-accumulating decisions is echoed in Huff’s later writing for television shows like “Mad Men” and “House of Cards,” but here his Chicago roots lend the language a distinct cadence. Huff’s dialogue is written in a gritty police drama naturalism that reminds one of the very best and sharpest contemporary television. Here, however, the crowded frame of the small screen is abandoned for a bare stage. By removing the comfort of crammed sets and actionpacked scenes, the audience is encouraged to cling to every word spoken. Detached from the events that shape its content, this duologue blossoms for a sophisticated ear willing to wrestle with the conflicting histories it presents. In a rain that continues without regard for those under its onslaught, Denny and Joey can only decide what the deluge means and in turn how they should respond. When lives are so closely tied, fragile trust is always at stake. Through his subtle and engaging approach to storytelling, Huff demands the audience decide who is worthy of trust. As we retell our versions of the truth after the curtain falls, we must decide if the rain cleanses or kills. Dr. Rachel Linn Dramaturg and theatre educator

Jeff ( Perry) put the fear of God in me, actually, when I realized that he was seriously offering me to be “DENNY” to go to hell and back eight shows a week. I was being asked to portray a man who treats his wife and kids the same as he would some pimp on his beat. How does one recover from this, living in his skin? The Alliance also creates and nurtures the careers of artists through the Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition, producing the world premiere for the competition winner as part of the regular season, and the Reiser Atlanta Artists Lab, providing developmental support and production resources for three performing arts projects each year. The Alliance’s dedication to providing access to the arts is reflected in its commitment to creating new work for all ages, and to bringing that work into classrooms and communities across Atlanta and throughout the region. More than 50,000 students each year experience age-specific professional performances and participate in acting classes, drama camps, and in-school initiatives through the Alliance Theatre Acting Program and Education Department. The Alliance’s groundbreaking Theatre for the Very Young performances offer professionally-produced, fully interactive theater for infants and toddlers; the Palefsky Collision Project invites high school artists to create and perform new civicminded theater based on a classic text; and community acting classes and skill-building workshops engage professional artists, young actors, business leaders, and curious learners of all ages. Twice recognized by the U.S. Department of Education for leadership in arts education, the Alliance Arts for Learning Institute equips classroom teachers with theatrical techniques that link directly to school curriculum and have been empirically proven to improve student learning. These programs include Georgia Wolf Trap Early Learning Through the Arts and Dramaturgy K–12, in which students create research material that informs Alliance productions and prepares peer audiences. The work produced by the Alliance allows locally based artists the chance to create on a nationally watched stage, building and sustaining Atlanta’s artistic community. The vision of the Alliance Theatre is to be a beacon of leadership for the national field, while remaining deeply rooted in and reflective of our local Atlanta community.
