Faith Ringgold’s “The French Collection: Dancing at the Louvre, 1961” story quilt captures a visit to the Louvre that ends with children dancing in joy at finding the “Mona Lisa.” The spirit of gentle joyous change that permeates this quilt, and the vision of social transformation captured in the painting, inspired this production.

If it’s true that all politics is local, I wonder if all romance is universal? What I Learned in Paris is a political romance. Political in the old-school sense of polis — citizenship or a body of citizens. Romance in the eternal sense of that intoxicating, infuriating, make-you-do-crazy-things force that fuels us all. In this political romance, Pearl Cleage’s body of citizens is a group committed to common cause at a time ripe for change. They’re also a group of dyed-in-the-wool romantics who can’t imagine living without love. And the thing I find glorious about this particular play is that this writer couldn’t possibly tell one part of the story without telling the other. Here’s what I hope. I hope this play will make you tell your own stories. About Atlanta. About 1973. About changing cities. And most of all, I hope this play makes you tell someone a story about falling in love.

n comedies about remarriage, wonderful couples break up and then experiment with getting back together. These breakups and comings together alternate between portraying personal change and social change. Because for a well-matched couple rematched, change is imperative. In Pearl Cleage’s What I Learned in Paris, a well-matched couple may or may not end up rematched. Evie and J.P. are a prominent Atlanta couple. Well-educated, politically powerful, and passionately involved in civic life. But a marriage begun as a partnership devolved into a patriarchy, in Evie’s view, and a mess, in J.P.’s. In 1973 Atlanta, the city has embraced the huge but inevitable change of African-American mayoral leadership. Against this backdrop of dramatic social change, Cleage sends her characters topsy-turvy through a journey toward active choices about personal happiness.
12
EncoreAtlantA.com
The first 20th-century American comedy of remarriage was Langdon Mitchell’s The New York Idea, written in 1906 and examining the pitfalls of easy divorce laws. “What I wanted to satirize,” Mitchell wrote, “was a certain extreme frivolity — frivolity in the deepest sense.” Mitchell’s rebuttal to easy divorce laws was to create a relationship so serious that it transcends changes to the institution of marriage. The wonderful Private Lives (1930) by Noël Coward examines equality. But his couple seem isolated together, as society of 1930 had few options for what Amanda and Elliot could change into in order for their equality to have great social impact. The great works of remarriage in American film — The Philadelphia Story (1940) and His Girl Friday (also 1940) explore ideas about gender equality against a social backdrop vital to the romance
“You know there’s always been a light burning in the window for you.” — Walter Burns to ex-wife Hildy Johnson
“I jumped out of that window a long time ago.” — Hildy Johnson, 1940 filmscript for His Girl Friday
being examined. Both use a couple, well-matched economically, creating new 20th-century models of marriage through remarriage: in The Philadelphia Story, an idealized companionship based on profound familiarity and access to privilege; in His Girl Friday, an idealized work partnership based on equal talent, drive and dedication to journalism. In each story, the larger social world embraces these remarriages as a sign of progressive times. In 2004, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind created a science-fiction fantasy about a couple who each erase their memories of each other after a painful breakup. Here technological advances (the larger social world) impede romance. The film questions whether the erasure of memory erases the self, whether two people once deeply together can remain whole without the other person. But in terms of the genre, it’s

a throwback to the idea in Private Lives, of a relationship as a closed system. Pearl Cleage’s play portrays all these questions about change, identity and personal transformation in a world obsessed not with change inside the home, but within the larger civic body. Cleage asks, can two people whose marriage was torn apart by their social and professional obligations come back together if their work outside the home has succeeded? Portraying a crowning achievement of the civil rights movement and 1970s feminist ideas of the personal being political, Cleage elegantly juxtaposes two great 20th-century ideas about equality into a 21st-century theatrical experience. alliancetheatre.org

Cleage’s political and playwriting lives intersect in Paris
Atlanta, 1973. Fall. The O’Jays, Paul Simon and Earth, Wind and Fire are on the radio. Maynard Jackson has just been elected the city’s first African American mayor. And Pearl Cleage, a 25-year-old political activist who will be his press secretary for the next two-plus years, sprints through her marathon workdays with a hairstyle that stands somewhere between an Angela Davis Afro and today’s signature close-cropped style. Cleage (rhymes with egg) is 63 now and still a political activist. She’s also a playwright of some renown, which is where that pivotal time in Atlanta history comes in. It’s the jumpingoff point for her newest play, the political romance What I Learned in Paris. “It’s about the impossibility of telling the truth, unless you’re telling the truth about everything,” she says. Atlanta in 1973 “was the most exciting place I had ever been,” she says. Jackson was making history. Charis Books & More, with its feminist

Yes, says Cleage, who referenced her early ‘70s journals when she began writing. Entry after entry spoke of gender politics in her life and the lives around her: “My husband doesn’t understand this.” “My boss doesn’t understand that.” “That man at that party last night was so sexist.” Those revelations helped shape her script, her second play in three years to receive a world premiere at the Alliance Theatre. Writer, activist, storyteller — Cleage is all these and more. Alliance Artistic Director Susan V. Booth, in fact, calls her “Citizen Pearl.” She’s written about African American pioneers in the American West, 1930s Harlem, Mississippi civil rights workers, two women in a bus station, Coretta Scott King and African American high society in Montgomery, Ala. Her next play is already percolating. It, too, will be set in the city too busy to hate. “At this moment,” she says, “ I am really obsessed with Atlanta stories.”

leanings, was just opening. The city was home to active anti-war and anti-Nixon movements. And Cleage was part of a drama group that created “happenings” at Atlanta shopping centers. The Atlanta air crackled, and she couldn’t get enough. Cleage first encountered Jackson in 1969, shortly after moving here from Detroit. He was running for vice mayor when she saw him on TV, criticizing the way police had handled a shoplifter they’d shot and killed in the middle of a downtown street. “He was amazing,” she recalls, her hands helping tell the story. “He really was larger than life.” His intelligence and passion impressed her, but she didn’t know who he was. When she asked, she was told: “He’s going to be the next mayor.” A few years later, when Jackson did run for mayor, she volunteered. “I was a writer, and I wanted to assist any way I could,” she says. The candidate came to her home himself and told her: “The city needs you.” She went from writing speeches while he campaigned to trading bons mots with the press in City Hall. Those experiences helped inform What I Learned in Paris, which is about a group of friends in the midst of a dynamic time in Atlanta. “These people are realizing the light on them is so bright that any contradiction between what they say and what they do will be shown in deep relief,” she says. It’s also about gender dynamics. Gender dynamics?

Along with John, J.P.’s law partner, and Lena, a professional campaign strategist, they linger at the celebration party, trying to imagine what the future holds. Into this mix swoops J.P.’s first wife, Evie, who left her marriage to find herself in Paris and now returns from her bohemian life to reclaim her space at the center of Atlanta political life. Together, this amazing group of world travelers, romantics and game-changers will learn to live their lives in the spotlight of history.

Members of our community respond to the work on the Alliance Stage In Pearl Cleage’s What I Learned in Paris, I was reminded that the flow of history can be impacted as a result of allowing others’ desires and wishes to determine your destiny. Conducting that periodic self-assessment, to remain in touch with your personal truth, can be as simple as taking a look in the mirror. This play also reminds us that the mirror can be quite revealing and help anyone find their truth. So many make decisions for themselves based on what they believe others expect of them. Many allow the course of their personal history to be influenced by what they perceive as “acceptable” to others. As a result, the flow of their destiny can become stifled. What I discovered in this play is that the natural flow of history finds its destiny when truth becomes the focal point. — Philippa V. Ellis, Alliance Theatre Board of Directors
Do you appreciate live theatre, enjoy meeting new people and trying new things? If so, then get involved with one of the largest volunteer forces in the arts. The Alliance Theatre volunteer STARS program offers a wide range of opportunities, which includes advocating for live theatre, ushering for Alliance productions, participating in and staffing fundraising & hospitality events, and assisting Alliance staff members with daily office tasks. STARS is composed of four separate organizations working together on fund-saving and fund-raising projects to benefit the theatre. The four volunteer groups are the Alliance Children’s Theatre Guild, Alliance Theatre Guild, the Direct Volunteers and the Usher Corps. For more information on becoming a volunteer, please contact Shana Orr at shana.orr@ woodruffcenter.org or call 404.733.4761.

about the alliance theatre Founded in 1968, the Alliance Theatre remains closely tied to the cultural identity of Atlanta, growing as the city has grown. The theatre has gained national recognition and prominence as Atlanta has become a leading international city. In 1977, the Alliance merged with the Atlanta Children’s Theatre (founded in 1929) in order to include Atlanta’s youngest audiences in fully produced theatrical experiences. In 1979, the Alliance created the Theatre School (now the Acting Program and Education Department) in order to strengthen the relationship with our community. In 2007, under the leadership of Susan Booth, the Jennings Hertz Artistic Director, the Alliance received the Regional Theatre Tony Award®, in recognition of sustained excellence in programming, education and community engagement. Realizing that our audience and the national field supports plays developed in Atlanta, the Alliance has created a large body of new work. The Alliance produces world premiere American musicals with a strong track record of Broadway, touring and subsequent regional productions. The theatre creates and nurtures the plays and careers of earlycareer playwrights through the Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwright Competition, providing a premiere for the winner as part of our regular season and national networking opportunities for four finalists. Locally based artists create work on a nationally watched stage, launching and sustaining Atlanta’s artistic community. Finally we create and produce original plays for young audiences at every age level: from the Collision Project, which creates opportunities for high school artists to collide with classic texts, to the groundbreaking Theatre for the Very Young, creating interactive work for infants and toddlers. The Alliance takes great pride in our multigenerational educational programming. Believing that the same excellence found on our stage must be found in our education programs, the Alliance created the Institute for Educators and Teaching Artists. A collaborative partnership between the Alliance and partner schools, the institute programs equip teachers with theatrical techniques that link directly to school curriculum, align with the Georgia Performance Standards and increase student learning. These innovative programs include GA Wolf Trap, a nationally recognized professional learning program that focuses on literacy skills for children in pre-K – 2nd grade, Dramaturgy K-12, a unique program that empowers student scholars to create research material that both informs Alliance productions and prepares their peer audiences; and Collision Plus, which takes the creativity and collaboration of the Collision Project into our high school classrooms. The Alliance also offers community education, including classes for all ages and abilities of theatre interest; and adult student productions of unproduced plays in development (working with local writers and playwrights from the National Graduate Playwriting Competition). Twice recognized by the Federal Department of Education as leaders in the field of arts education, these programs reflect the Alliance’s commitment to citywide arts access. The Alliance Theatre strives to set the highest artistic standards and create the powerful experience of shared theatre for a diverse audience. Above all else, we value excellence, pursued with integrity and creativity, and achieved through collaboration. 404.733.4650 or alliancetheatre.org http://facebook.com/AllianceTheatre

Kiss of the Spiderwoman 50% OFF TICKETS FOR ACTOR’S EXPRESS
Posh half-off deal!
From the creators of Chicago and Cabaret comes Kiss of the Spider Woman, the dark and moving musical that opens Actor’s Express’ 25th anniversary season. It tells the story of Valentin, a Marxist revolutionary, and Molina, a gay window dresser, who develop an uneasy friendship rooted in surviving life in a Latin American prison. As the bond between them deepens, the line between reality and fantasy blurs.
