Go big or go home. That was the dictum of my Grandmother Rose, who lived a wildly full 93 years. It’s one I try to hew to in matters personal, professional and aesthetic. It’s risky, it’s juicy, and it’s a whole lot more fun than measured caution. If you look up from your program right now, you’ll find yourself looking at one realllly big stage. It’s the gift of The Alliance, but it’s also the challenge, as it takes a particularly muscular work of art and a particularly audacious collection of artists to fill it up right. Enter Zorro. The classic swashbuckling romance of heroes and villains, intrigue and mystery and old fashioned derring-do. Wait. Not big enough? Okay, let’s throw in the full throated life force that is the music of the Gipsy Kings. No? You want more? How about a director as passionate about flamenco as he is about meticulously crafting thrill ride productions? And just for grins, throw in an international team of dancers, swordsmen, singers and actors who take it as a point of pride that they can fill this great big space with great big emotions? This Zorro has seen a lot of the world. It’s played the UK, Russia, the Far East and beyond. But now it’s here – rethought and retuned for an American audience. So what I say is this: It’s big. It’s home. And now it’s time for you to jump on the ride. Enjoy.

1919 The Curse of Capistrano, a story by Johnston McCulley, is the first work to feature the fictional character named Zorro.
1920 The Mark of Zorro, a silent film starring Douglas Fairbanks and Noah Beery, premieres.
936 The Bold Caballero, the first “talking” 1 Zorro movie, debuts.
1940 The Mark of Zorro, a film remake
directed by Rouben Mamoulian, stars Tyrone Power as Zorro, Linda Darnell as his love interest and Basil Rathbone as the villain.
The Mark of Zorro, featuring Noah Beery and Douglas Fairbanks
1922–1959 In response to public demand fueled by the
film, McCulley wrote more than 60 additional Zorro stories. The last one was published posthumously.
1957–1959 Walt Disney produces a half-hour
TV series titled “Zorro,” starring Guy Williams in the title role.
1998 The Mask of Zorro, another film based on
McCulley’s character, is directed by Martin Campbell and stars Antonio Banderas and Anthony Hopkins. In it, the original Zorro (Hopkins) escapes from prison to find his long-lost daughter (Catherine Zeta-Jones) and avenge the death of his wife against a corrupt governor. He is aided by his successor (Banderas), who pursues his own vendetta.
2005 Zorro, a novel by Chilean author Isabel Allende, is The Quest of Zorro
written as a biography and represents the first origin story ever undertaken for the character.
2005 The Legend of Zorro, a sequel to The Mask of Zorro, is again directed by Martin Campbell. Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta-Jones reprise their roles as the title hero and his spouse, and Rufus Sewell stars as the villain, Count Armand.

california history Timeline: History of California 1521 New Spain founded after the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire, reaching from the Mississippi River to the West, then north to Canada. After initial explorations, the harsh natural conditions and mountain barriers kept European settlement at bay for about 200 years. Native American tribes in the area were hunter-gatherers, their culture differentiated from other tribes because of regional isolation.
1769 Spanish pueblos and missions begin developing the European settlement of California. The area remains relatively isolated, with ship travel between “New Spain” (Mexico) taking 30 to 50 days.

1776 The U.S. Declaration of Independence is signed. 1789 French Revolution rocks the ancient monarchies of Europe. 1805 Zorro is born. 1821 Mexico, which includes California, gains independence from Spain. 1844 The California Train from the eastern United States breaks through California’s isolation. 1846 The United States takes control of California during the Mexican-American War leads. 1850 California becomes a state.
[Zorro’s] enemies are many, as is often the case with those who defend the weak, rescue damsels in distress, and humiliate the powerful. Naturally, every idealist attracts enemies, but we prefer to count our friends, who are much greater in number. I am compelled to recount these adventures because it serves little purpose for Diego to risk his life for the sake of justice if no one knows it…There are all too few heroes with a romantic heart and a fun-loving nature. Let me say it straight out: There is no one like Zorro.

Celebrated musicians provide authentic sounds for legendary story By Kathy Janich
T
he legend of Zorro has been around since the early 20th century, the music of the Gipsy Kings just since the 1970s, but they seem to have found synergy onstage. The Kings, who come from France and live there still, are largely responsible for bringing the joyful sounds of progressive pop-oriented flamenco to the world, and to Zorro. But it wasn’t always so. The two bands of brothers that make up the 10-member group — the Reyes and Baliardos — began as a Gypsy band that busked on the streets of Cannes, and played weddings and parties. The young men flavored their flamenco with Western pop and Latin rhythms. Their name, originally Los Reyes, comes from their nomadic lifestyle and their heritage; their Spanish Gypsy families fled to France to escape the Spanish civil war in the 1930s. The group’s first two albums attracted little

notice, then, in 1986, they connected with a French record producer named Claude Martinez, who believed they could be more. He nudged them toward a more contemporary sound with Middle East, Latin America, North Africa and rock ‘n’ roll influences. Flamenco purists predicted epic failure. They were wrong. In 1987, the Kings released two songs — “Djobi Djoba” and “Bamboleo.” Both were hits in France. Their first album charted in 12 European countries, including England, which often turns its nose up at international music. Then came the United States. The Kings debuted at the New York Music Seminar, signed with Sony in America and were invited to perform at an inaugural ball for George H.W. Bush (they went home to rest instead) and never really looked back. To date the brothers have produced 20 albums and six videos and, in a sure sign of American success, performed their hit “Bamboleo” on ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars” in May 2010. No less a music bible than Rolling Stone magazine has described their music as a place

where “Spanish flamenco and Romani rhapsody meet salsa funk.” And now comes Zorro, with more than 30 songs from the Gipsy Kings, co-composer John Cameron and lyricist Stephen Clark. Tony Award-nominated director Christopher Renshaw (The King and I, Taboo) began developing Zorro as a play with musical bits in London in 2001. It wasn’t working. Then a producer took him for a ride in a “rather nice limousine.” Destination unknown. They eventually stopped at an open-air concert venue, where the Gipsy Kings were performing. The producer handed Renshaw a specially made edition of the London Evening Standard with the headline “Chris Renshaw directs Gipsy Kings’ musical Zorro.”

STEPHEN CLARK (Book & Lyrics) Stephen Clark’s play Stripped won a Jeff Award in Chicago in 2003 (Circle Theatre). He became involved with music theatre after studying with Stephen Sondheim at Oxford University in 1991. He went on to receive an Olivier Award for his lyrics for the reworked version of Martin Guerre for Cameron Mackintosh, which then toured Britain and North America. Other work includes Forbidden City (Esplanade Theatre, Singapore) and The Far Pavilions (Shaftsbury Theatre, London). He adapted the libretto of La Traviata for ENO’s new production in 2006. Stephen’s music theatre adaptation of The Mahabharata, music by Nitin Sawhney, opened in 2007 at Sadler’s Wells Theatre, London, and toured Britain. He also wrote the book and lyrics for Love Story, music by Howard Goodall, which opened in the West End in December 2010. It has since played the Walnut Theatre in Pennsylvania. GIPSY KINGS The Gipsy Kings — whose members hail from the gypsy settlements in

CHRISTOPHER RENSHAW (Director) was born in Reading, England, and attended Magdalen College, Oxford. He served as Resident Director of the Royal Opera House. Since then Chris has directed operas, plays and musicals all over the world. His favorite opera productions include Norma with Joan Sutherland (Sydney Opera House); Eugene Onegin conducted by Rostropovich (Aldeburgh Festival); and a new production of Benjamin Britten’s A Midsummer Nights Dream (Covent Garden). His celebrated series of Gilbert and Sullivan’s operettas (The Mikado, HMS Pinafore and The Gondoliers) at Sadler’s Wells Theatre in London led to a crossover into plays and musicals. Christopher directed Hayley and Juliet Mills in Noel Coward’s Fallen Angels in Australia, Sir Brian Rix in Dry Rot in London’s West End, a TV production of “Ruddigore” with Vincent Price and Cafe Puccini at London’s Wyndham’s Theatre, produced by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Cameron Mackintosh. He received a Tony nomination and a Drama Desk Award for The King And I with Donna Murphy and Lou Diamond Phillips, which also won four Tonys. She has cast more than 200 LORT B, D and TYA productions, including a wide range of classical, contemporary and world premiere dramas and musicals. She has worked with such directors as Susan V. Booth, Kenny Leon, David H. Bell, Kent Gash, Doug Hughes, Gary Griffin, Molly Smith and Andy Blankenbuehler. Since the Alliance is a center for new play development and productions, Jody has been privileged to cast a large number of new plays including The Last Night of Ballyhoo by Alfred Uhry, Flyin’ West and Blues for an Alabama Sky by Pearl Cleage, In the Red and Brown Water by Tarell Alvin McCraney, and world premiere musicals such as Aida, The Color Purple, Sister Act: The Musical and Bring It On: The Musical. Jody also serves as casting director for Kenny Leon’s True Colors Theatre Company and worked as Atlanta casting director for the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Tribute in Washington, D.C., and the feature film Charming the Hearts of Men. Susan V. As a director, she has worked at theatres including the Goodman, La Jolla Playhouse, New York Stage and Film, Actors Theatre of Louisville, Northlight Theatre, Victory Gardens, Court Theatre and many others. She holds degrees from Denison and Northwestern universities and was a fellow of the National Critics Institute and the Kemper Foundation. She has held teaching positions at Northwestern and DePaul universities, and serves as adjunct faculty with Emory University. She is the past president of the board of directors for Theatre Communications Group (the national service organization for the field), is on the artistic board of the Steinberg Charitable Trust in New York and is a trustee of Denison University. about the alliance theatre Synopsis California, 1805, when Western North America was part of the Spanish Empire, Spanish ideals of honor and patriarchial tradition linger. Don Diego de la Vega, a wealthy young caballero, is sent away to school in Spain by his father, Don Alejandro. He leaves the feisty young Luisa and his older brother, Ramon. In Spain, Diego abandons his education to find his wild side with the gypsies, entertaining and singing. When Luisa brings him home to California, he returns (with the Gypsy theatrical troupe and Diego’s lover, Inez) to find Ramon a despotic leader. Luisa battles against Ramon while Diego pretends to be an idiot in order to gain Ramon’s trust and to learn the fate of Don Alejandro. At the same time, he creates his alter ego of Zorro—the fox—a masked swordsman in pursuit of justice.
