There are few metaphors as rife as a rollercoaster.

Think about it – who hasn’t had a life/work/emotional experience that was so full of hopeful rises and stomach-destabilizing falls that it could only be described with rollercoaster references? The interesting thing about the ride itself (and the experiences we use the image of the ride to describe) is that, on some level, we actually CHOSE to have these ups and downs. We self-selected to be on a ride, or do a job, or be in a relationship knowing full well that there was really very little likelihood of a smooth sail. Why? Because maybe we all need occasional, wildly vivid reminders of the wonderful danger of being alive.

Ride the Cyclone is an improbable show with an equally improbable production history.

A funky little fringe musical from Canada that eventually landed Off-Broadway? A story that sees all of its main characters die in the first ten minutes? C’mon. Really? Well, yes.

Really. Because just like the Cyclone of the title, the ride of this play has impossible ups, daunting falls, and viscerally reminds viewers of the beautiful and awful wonder of living. It does so with preternaturally talented teenagers who find every moment of their life fraught with pitfall and triumph. And there is an impossible rightness around that choice of age; somewhere inside all of us still lives our teenage self. Whether we admit it or not, we all still carry that fragile and freakish and fantastic version of ourselves around in our very grown up-looking bodies.

Here’s hoping you and your teenaged self are ready for the ride –

Cyclone Rides Again The Saint Cassian Chamber Choir visits Atlanta Story by Julie Bookman | Photos by A’riel Tinter

T

he very premise of Ride the Cyclone, which launched a decade ago in a cabaret form in Victoria, British Columbia, is weirdly-wacky enough to make one’s stomach churn as if it has just endured one of the trippiest roller coasters, like, perhaps, the Goliath (“must be 54 inches to ride”), at Six Flags Over Georgia.

This show probes the plights of six teenagers who not long before comprised the small Saint Cassian Chamber Choir from the dying town of Uranium City (‘in the middle of nowhere”), Saskatchewan. The six had climbed aboard the Cyclone coaster, but soon thereafter its front axle broke, the coaster derailed at the apex of the loop-de-loop, and the kids all plummeted to their deaths.

Ever since, they’ve been stuck in a kind of purgatory. Now does this sound like fun stuff, or what?

In his New York Times review of the 2016 Off-Broadway production, Charles Isherwood called Cyclone “a delightfully weird and just plain delightful show,” also praising the “engaging and varied score.” Music, lyrics, and book are by Jacob Richmond and Brooke Maxwell.

“What we’ve found,” says Richmond, “is that some people who don’t love musicals really like this musical.”

In their purgatory limbo, the dead teens encounter The Amazing Karnak, a fortune-teller character from a carnival arcade machine. (Think of Zoltar in the movie Big, or, as Cyclone’s stage notes suggest, “an ominous mechanical Santa Claus — or God — or Hal 3000.”)

Ride the Cyclone, which tops off the Alliance Theatre’s 50th anniversary season, defies categorization. Enhanced by eerily presented carnival-scene video projections and images of the kids’ former lives, it’s largely a series of solo turns by each of the deceased choir members.

The Amazing Karnak becomes a sort of game show host. He has devised a bizarre contest in which the doomed youngsters are to each make a case for themselves. (And they’ll spew forth a boatload of adolescent angst while at it). The grand prize: One of them will get to return to the world of the living.

While so many shows stick to a likeminded musical style and sensibility, the campy Cyclone is an exception. Its songs ricochet between rap, jazz, pop rock, and hip-hop. One character even has a serious operatic turn.

The six tragic teens represent about every high school persona you can think of — “so you will find yourself in at least one of the characters,” Richmond says. “You kind of have an idea of who you were in high school, so you’re going to find something to relate to.”

For example, there’s Ocean O’Connell Rosenberg, the over-achiever who sings a catchy pop number about how the world needs more super people like her (“What the World Needs”): “I’m the mover, I’m the shaker, / I’m the headline maker.” There’s Noel Gruber, the lone queer kid who was stuck working at a Taco Bell, but who’d had secret dreams about another kind of edgy, dramatic life. And there’s Mischa Bachinski, a Ukranian bad boy rapper, full of rage and passion that hides his “wounded, fragile heart.”

unruly beast,” is its own sort of thrill ride. “We wanted it to be full of the unpredictable, like the unexpected twists of a roller coaster.”

Cyclone was a quick hit: “the most uproarious and outrageous musical Canada has ever produced,” said Toronto’s Globe and Mail newspaper. Some who’ve seen Cyclone have sensed shades of quirky shows like Little Shop of Horrors, Urinetown, and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Following a Canadian tour, the show was flushed into a more narrative form by the Chicago Shakespeare Theater. The late Rachel Rockwell, a leading musical theater director in the Windy City, earned a best director award for helming the 2015 Chicago production, which marked the show’s U.S. premiere.

Rockwell went on to direct both a critically acclaimed Off-Broadway run in 2016, and another production last year in Seattle. She had agreed to direct the Alliance production, but lost her life to ovarian cancer a year ago, just as Cyclone’s Seattle run was winding down.

“Losing Rachel was heartbreaking to the cast, to us all,” Richmond says. “She had an incredible heart and love for this piece. I adored her and trusted her 100 percent. She was a lovely human being and everyone misses her very much.”

As Cyclone has gone from coast to coast, a number of its cast members have stuck with their roles. Five of the seven cast members in the Alliance production have appeared in 8 ALLIANCE THEATRE | ALLIANCETHEATRE.ORG

previous productions, including Karl Hamilton, who plays The Amazing Karnak.

Leora Morris, a former Yale Directing Fellow at the Alliance who recently directed the company’s giddy The Dancing Granny and the delightful Crossing Delancey, has stepped up to oversee this Cyclone. Richmond asserts that Cyclone opens itself wide to directorial creativity, so he’s excited to see what Toronto native Morris will bring to the demented comedy.

Did Richmond and co-creator Maxwell ever consider it tricky to achieve the right balance between macabre subject matter and high humor? Did they ever worry about giving laughs to something that was a tad too dark?

“You know, I never separated the two,” Richmond says. “Life is really funny, but also, it’s incredibly sad. What we joke about is also what we cry about.”

Still, he adds, keen attention was paid to making sure that the humor was never meanspirited.

“At the end of the day, this show is a really good time,” he says. “As morbid as the theme is, hopefully it will make you happy. You’re going to get surprises and some weird, gothicky stuff. There is a sadness, but you also will find yourself exploring some of your own fears in a really new and exciting way. It’s not going to depress you, but you may find yourself thrown off balance — I think that’s the thing.”

So you’re best advised to strap yourself in tight and just enjoy the ride.

This production of Ride the Cyclone is dedicated to Rachel Rockwell, her transformative offerings, and the bliss we are now experiencing, in large part, thanks to her vision. Under Rachel’s direction, the cast, crew, and creatives collaborated to take this joy ride to new heights. We are honored to join in on the fun! This musical, which features book, music, and lyrics by Jacob Richmond and Brooke Maxwell, has taken some twists and turns since its inception in 2001. A story of hope, humor, and tragedy, Cyclone has touched the hearts of many both onstage and off.

2008 Writing session leads to a first workshop at Atomic Vaudeville, a well-loved theater in the basement of a Ukrainian church.

2013 During second Canadian tour, Broadway producer Kevin McCollum introduces Cyclone to director Rachel Rockwell.

2009 Premiere of first staged production takes place at Metro Studios in Victoria, British Columbia.

It takes courage and creativity to start your own business. Especially a non-profit arts organization. Especially if you are still in high school or college. Two of our teen program alumni who did just that have opened up about their experiences with Teen & Adult Programs Manager Sarah Wallis.

Who are you and what is your experience with the Alliance Theatre?

Austin: My name is Austin Geter and I was a part of the 2016/2017 teen ensemble at the Alliance Theatre. My teen ensemble experience revolutionized the way I saw theatre, with incredible work like Troubadour, The Prom, and Too Heavy for Your Pocket. I immediately knew that I wanted to intern after high school. Through that experience, I traveled to the Theatre Communications Group conference to present on the importance of teen programming across the country, helped lead the next group of teen ensemble members (including assistant directing A Brief History of Fire that was directed by Richard Garner and written by Phillip DePoy), worked on divisive pieces being developed at the Alliance, stage managed for some Theatre for the Very Young shows, and helped with various marketing projects.

Tyler: My name is Tyler Bey, I’m 17, and I’ve been active with the Alliance Theatre for three years. I’ve worked with the Alliance’s Teen Ensemble program, and through it have had an abundance of opportunities. The Alliance is a second home to me, and I truly can’t see my life as a theatre artist without it.

Tell me about your organization.

Austin: This year, my creative partner Kendyll Romine and I are launching Nomad Theatre Company with a production of Godspell in June and a second production in the fall. As a theatre artist, I am hugely inspired by work that is site-specific, community based, and immersive.

Tyler: I run a non-profit called S.P.R.O.U.T., or Showing People Remedy Options Using Theatre. We provide workshops for all different types of people to show them that theatre practices have extensive uses in “the real world,” including everything from speech and communication skills, to meditative practices, to movement and alignment. The first part of our acronym, “Showing” and “People” are found in two ways. We physically show people how theatre can have real life applications through workshops. Then, after every workshop we collect data through surveys and find creative ways to visually graph and prove theater’s real-life applications. We hope to take this information to more organizations to show them their potential for growth with the introduction of our free theatre workshops. Our goal is to “plant a seed” and make a place that we can continuously come back to do more workshops and collect more data. We’ll do this until we have organizations, academies, and afterschool programs that we can watch grow from small seeds to sprouts, creating a garden of theatre mindfulness.

What do you hope to bring to the Atlanta community through the work you are doing?

Austin: Through Nomad Theatre Company’s work, we hope that we can show that theatre is not for an elite few, but can be foundational for all communities. As a result, for each production we put on, NTC will be partnering with an existing organization that is making tangible change in and across Atlanta. For our first production, Godspell (a show about making a difference in the lives of those around us and learning to show compassion to our neighbor), we are partnering with Hands On Atlanta to help connect people to volunteer opportunities around the city.

Tyler: Through my six years of being involved with theatre, I’ve noticed that once you put on a show with someone – once you go through that process – you become a much richer person every time. We want to see an Atlanta that is more rich in connectedness and theatre mindfulness.

Tell me about the moment you knew you were going to create this organization.

Austin: I’ve always dreamed of creating and running a theatre company. However, I thought it wouldn’t be possible until years down the road. Most days, I still feel young and naïve, and recognize I have so much to learn still. But about a year ago, Kendyll and I started wondering what our futures were going to look like. As we talked, the seed was planted for NTC and the dream began to blossom. The world is a scary place these days, and I’m not one who wants to take any of my time here on earth for granted. So as NTC was birthed, it became very clear that not only was this vision extremely possible, but it was also essential to try to make my mark on humanity and to encourage and inspire as many people as I possibly could.

Tyler: Going from middle school theatre to high school theatre was tough for me. Theatre is something that is not valued at my high school. It wasn’t till summer 2018 that I figured out why: people who aren’t ever introduced to theatre don’t have any passion for it when they get older. I saw this lack of passion, lack of interest for theatre in my teachers, in my classmates and in their parents. To break this cycle, I knew I was going to have to intervene, and expose people to theatre myself, and thus S.P.R.O.U.T. was born.

Awards: Seven Suzi Bass awards for outstanding sound design with 14 nominations. DOUG PECK (Music Supervisor) is a Los Angeles-based, multi-genre musical director, pianist, conductor, orchestrator, arranger, vocal teacher/coach, and educator. He has appeared in concert with artists like Renée Fleming, Michelle Williams, Heather Headley, Kristin Chenoweth, Lupe Fiasco, Jessie Mueller, Shemekia Copeland, John Prine, André DeShields, Dee Alexander, Felicia P. Fields, Ernestine Jackson, Sylvia McNair, Rod Gilfry, and George Hearn. He conducted the original full orchestration of Carousel at the Glimmerglass Festival and created new Indian jazz-fusion arrangements and orchestrations for the stage version of Disney’s The Jungle Book seen in Chicago and Boston.

His collaborations with Tony-Award winning director Mary Zimmerman include The Jungle Book, a celebrated revision of Candide heard in Chicago, Washington, D.C., and Boston, Leonard Bernstein’s Wonderful Town, and a new production of Guys and Dolls heard at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and Los Angeles’ Wallis Annenberg Center. Peck can be heard on the recordings “Bright Young People: The Songs of Noël Coward” and Stephen Flaherty and Frank Galati’s “Loving Repeating: A Musical of Gertrude Stein.” For the Chicago Humanities Festival, Peck has presented Assassins and Follies in concert, as well as “A Night At The Oscars” (a marathon concert of every Academy Award-winning song) and “A Night At The Tony’s” (one song from every Tony Awardwinning musical), plus concert tributes to Prince, David Bowie, Josephine Baker, Eartha Kittening, Nina Simone, and Tina Turner.

SUSAN V. BOOTH (Jennings Hertz Artistic Director) joined the Alliance Theatre in 2001 and has initiated the Palefsky Collision Project for teens, the Alliance/ Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition, the Reiser Atlanta Artists Lab, local producing partnerships and regional collaborative productions as well as commercial partnerships on such projects as

profiles The Prom; Tuck Everlasting; Ghost Brothers of Darkland County; The Color Purple; Bring It On: The Musical; Twyla Tharp’s Come Fly Away; Sister Act: The Musical; Bring in ’ da Noise, Bring in ’ da Funk; and Jesus Christ Superstar GOSPEL. She has directed world premieres by such writers as Pearl Cleage, Janece Shaffer, former U.S. Poet Laureate Natasha Trethewey, Stephen King, John Mellencamp and Kristian Bush. She has directed nationally at the Goodman Theatre, La Jolla Playhouse, New York Stage and Film, Actors Theatre of Louisville, Northlight Theatre, Victory Gardens, Court Theatre and many others. She holds degrees from Denison and Northwestern universities and was a fellow of the National Critics Institute and the Kemper Foundation. She has held teaching positions at Northwestern, DePaul and Emory universities and is a past president of the board of directors for the Theatre Communications Group, the national service organization for the field. She is a trustee of Denison University and a member of the Carter Center’s Board of Councilors. Booth’s leadership is underwritten by the BOLD Theater Women’s Leadership Circle, an initiative to support and promote women’s theater leadership funded by the Pussycat Foundation. She is married to Max Leventhal and is the proud mother of Moira Rose Leventhal.

He is married to theater director and educator Laura Hackman and is the proud father of two boys, Jack and Ben. JODY FELDMAN (Casting Director) began her theater career as an actress in Atlanta before moving into administration as the assistant general manager at Frank Wittow’s Academy Theatre. Feldman is the Allliance’s producer and casting director. She joined the company in 1991 as casting director. MIKE SCHLEIFER (Managing Director) joined the Alliance Theatre in 2014 as general manager, and in 2016 became managing director. While at the Alliance, Schleifer has led the administrative team on more than 50 productions and was one of the architects of the “On the Road” season, in which the Alliance produced 12 shows at 12 venues. He is proud to have started the Alliance’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee and to serve on the League of Resident Theatre’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Initiative.

Previously, he spent 13 years at Baltimore’s Center Stage, working as associate producer, production manager and resident stage manager. To celebrate the Alliance Theatre’s 50th anniversary season, we’ve invited artists, friends, and family to share why the Alliance is important to them. We asked Edward Queen, Director of Ethics and Servant Leadership at Emory University, to respond to the universal lessons in Ride the Cyclone.

Discussing the meaning or point of a play, novel, or any work of art is dangerous. Limiting a work of art to any one thing is a fool’s errand, an act away from which we should all shy.

Still works of art are about something. And, Ride the Cyclone, regardless of what else it might be about, is about the unrealized possibilities within its characters, possibilities unrealized due to fear and pain. The ultimate constraint, however, is death. Death occurs at a time unknown. The future is not guaranteed to us.

In death, the play’s characters are freed to proclaim their lives unrealized and hidden possibilities, along with the fears and pains that left them unrealized. In doing so, much is learned and discovered. The lessons they learn in death may perhaps be ones that the viewers can learn in life.

Synopsis …

A teenage chamber choir from Uranium City, Saskatchewan dies in a roller coaster accident at a traveling fair. They land in a strange purgatory, overseen by a mechanical fortune teller who invites them to compete in a macabre game; the winner of this game will return to the land of the living. The bewildered teens, each in turn, make cases for themselves, singing and dancing for their lives, telling their stories of lives interrupted.

about the alliance theatre Celebrating its 50th anniversary season, the Alliance Theatre is the leading producing theater in the Southeast, reaching more than 165,000 patrons annually. In 2007, under the leadership of Susan V. Booth, Jennings Hertz Artistic Director, the Alliance received the Regional Theatre Tony Award for sustained excellence in programming, education and community engagement.

In January 2019, the Alliance will open its new, stateof-the-art performance space, The Coca-Cola Stage at Alliance Theatre. Known for its high artistic standards and national role in creating significant theatrical works, the Alliance has premiered more than 110 productions, including nine that transferred to Broadway. The Alliance Theatre volunteer STARS program offers a wide range of opportunities, which includes advocating for live theatre, ushering for Alliance productions, participating in and staffing fundraising & hospitality events, and assisting Alliance staff members with daily office tasks. STARS is composed of three committees working together on fund-saving and fund-raising projects to benefit the theatre.

The three committees are the Theatre Advocates, the Theatre Educators, and the Theatre Ushers.
