2 | betweenus When I was seven, against all odds, my uncle scored tickets for the Jackson 5 Reunion Tour. My first concert! I’ll never forget the joy, the ecstasy of hearing that music live on stage. When I was 14, against their better judgement, my parents let my friend Rob and me head to the Spectrum in Philly (on our own!) to see David Bowie. Again, I will never forget the immediacy of that music, the spectacle of that show. There is just something about our first concert experiences. Something profound. Something lasting. A great one (like, say, the Jackson 5 or David Bowie) can alter the course of your life and inspire you for years to come. So, what if this play is the first rock ’n’ roll concert for some of our audience members? This is a responsibility we couldn’t take lightly. We knew we needed to capture the energy and spectacle of a rock ’n’ roll show. To create an experience that would move audiences with the same frenzy that you’d find at a Tina Turner concert. To move them in ways that might captivate their imaginations for a lifetime. That this music is performed by a colony of Naked Mole Rats makes that all the more likely! How could you possibly forget a headbanging, wrinkled, naked mole rat rocking out like there’s no tomorrow? What’s more, how could you possibly forget young Wilbur, our protagonist, bravely asking the two most provocative questions of all time; “what if?” and “why not?” Mo Willems has written a play that celebrates those who dare to question. A beautiful story that reveals that sometimes our deepest fears are unfounded. That when a courageous soul dares to ask those provocative questions, it can create room for deeper understanding and acceptance among the rest of the community. But fear not, this is not some dry morality tale. This is Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed: The Rock Experience! This is a play that in Mo’s own words should be “fun, raw, and silly.” Just like the best rock ’n’ roll songs. A-wop-bop-a-loo-bop-a-wop-bam-boom! irector Leora Morris (Ride the Cyclone, Winnie the Pooh) knows Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed: The Rock Experience is more than a story about some obscure rodents. Combine a multifaceted message, a rock concert, and some creative costumes, and you’ve got a surefire success. “It does feel a little bit foolproof,” Morris says. “You take six people and you put them in incredible mole rat costumes, you put a four-piece rock band on stage, you sing amazing songs, and

you use as much ‘concert splendor’ as you can. I think it’s hard to be bored.” After a humble pause, she adds, “I hope.” Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed unites the quickwitted charm of Mo Willems with a rock concert score by Debbi Wicks La Puma, the former hearkening back to the stylings of Charlie Chaplin and “Who’s on First?” and the latter bearing undertones of “seventies rock glam” a la Queen and Janis Joplin.

“We’re pretty deeply into drawing inspiration from and quoting specific rock figures,” reveals Morris. “And that’s one of the treats for the parents. I don’t know that the grade threes are going to notice when we drop in a riff of Major Tom or something from Elton John, but the adults will definitely get those stylistic quotes, which is really fun.” She says it was not uncommon in rehearsal to say, “Could you just make this section a little bit Freddie Mercury?” and receive the response, “No problem. We just need an organ sound.” In conjunction with the irresistibly fun style, Willems gently weaves an important message, relevant to all ages. “I think what I love so much about it is that Mo specifies in the text that it’s not a ‘shutting out’ story. It’s a ‘letting in’ story,” Morris says. “And even more than focusing on the character who feels excluded and then welcomed in, I think the play sort of turns the camera lens on the folks that are doing

the shutting out. Once they are able to open their minds and begin to contemplate a whole other way of being, they actually discover all kinds of freedom, joyfulness, and playfulness inside themselves.” While the naked mole rats are discovering how to open themselves up to new possibilities, Morris hopes the audience will take a page out of their book and ask how they can do the same in their own lives. “It’s just such a wonderful invitation to all ages to consider, ‘What limiting beliefs are we holding onto without even realizing it, and what might be available to us if we give ourselves an opportunity to try thinking a different way?’” At the end of the day, Willems does not choose to tell this story of acceptance through a modern, relatable setting. He uses naked mole rats. And that’s what Morris thinks is the great achievement of this piece. “In some ways you could say, ‘Oh, this is about a kid who wants to dress in a way that he’ll get made fun of.’ Or you could use it as a stand-in for so many different longings that maybe come with a certain amount of stigma in society. But ultimately Mo has just found this animal who, at the essence of its identity is naked. And so without making it too real, he kind of finds his way into something really deep, but with all of this comedy and all of this strangeness of these giant naked mole rats who sing rock music.” Above all, Morris wants this musical to show young people how engaging and unforgettable theatre can be.

“We want [young people] to feel really at home in that space, like that space is there for them and that the theater can be a place that feels as cool and as relevant as a rock concert.” She mentioned some exciting technical elements that you’ll have to see the show to know about. But let me just say: they are certainly rock concert worthy. “We are teaching kids that a big, sometimes sterile-feeling theatre can be a place for them to go and for them to have fun and for them to feel like they’re seeing something that speaks to their sense of adventure.”

Morris adds that she definitely does not want it to be an environment that feels like they are being told to just sit still and listen. “It’s not, ‘You’d better get interested. Don’t talk. No clapping. ’ It’s more like a place where they feel like they can actually have an encounter and participate.” “I take these young people very seriously,” the artist declares. “And I want all of us, especially adults, to take ourselves less seriously. So hopefully the show is sort of an invitation to everyone, to the kids to believe that they are important and to the adults to sort of take themselves less seriously and just meet on a more even playing field.”

FROM OUR JUNIOR DRAMATURGS: Naked mole rats are unusual and unique animals that lots of people don’t know about. We did the research for you so you can learn some cool facts about the characters in this hilarious play. SIZE AND APPEARANCE • Naked mole rats are very small, usually three inches long and weigh only 1.5 ounces to 3 pounds. They have tiny tails and long whiskers, and are pinkish in color. They’re very wrinkly and have no hair. They have two long teeth on the top and two longer ones on the bottom. They have very poor eyesight and five appendages (toes) on their four limbs (legs).

Since the naked mole rat is one of the most unusual and fascinating creatures in the animal kingdom, we asked our Junior Dramaturgs and our colleagues at Zoo Atlanta for some facts about these amazing animals.
HABITAT • Naked mole rats are found in eastern Africa, specifically in Ethiopia, Kenya, Djibouti, and Somalia. • They live in underground burrows and tunnels in grassy and partially dry areas. The tunnels can total up to 2.5 miles.

DIET • Naked mole rats are herbivores. They eat roots and tubers by digging. A tuber is food, such as a potato. • They do eat feces, which makes them coprophagic. Feces is waste matter that is discharged from the intestines. • They don’t need to drink water because their food gives them all the water they need. GLAM ROCK Glam rock is the kind of music that inspired the “rock experience” of the play. It is a musical movement from the 1970s that started in Britain. It is also known as glitter rock because the singers’ costumes were glittery and crazy. People wore outrageous costumes, hairstyles, makeup, platform shoes, and, of course, glitter. People and bands famous for glam rock include Queen, Lou Reed, David Bowie, Elton John, Roxie Music, the New York Dolls, and Alice Cooper. ABOUT OUR JUNIOR DRAMATURGS Our Dramaturgy by Students Program is a “real world” project offered by the Alliance Theatre Institute. Teaching artists from the Alliance and classroom teachers collaborate with students who serve as Jr. Dramaturgs for an Alliance stage production. The Jr. Dramaturgs’ research process includes reading the play, researching the author of the source material, and identifying characters, setting, and historical and scientific content to provide information for the audience, director, actors, and designers of the play.

THE LIFE OF A MOLE RAT Fun Facts from Zoo Atlanta Found beneath the grasslands of eastern Africa, naked mole rats spend their entire lives underground. Truth is stranger than fiction when it comes to these subterranean mammals – check out some fun facts about nature’s weirdest underground families. • Naked mole rats are one of only two mammal species that are eusocial (the other is a cousin, the Damaraland mole rat). “Eusocial” refers to a lifestyle spent in the service of a queen, just like bees and ants. • The average colony size is around 70 individuals, but colonies numbering almost 300 have been documented. These supersized colonies can take up more space than five football fields. • Anyone who is not the queen has a designated role such as soldier or worker. Soldiers defend the colony from predators, largely other subterranean animals such as snakes or unwelcome mole rats who are strangers to the colony. Naked mole rats use smell to tell friend from foe. • When a female becomes queen, she grows physically larger, thanks to a bizarre spontaneous increase in the distances between the vertebrae in her spine. She is the only member of the colony whose size is different from the others. She is also the only female in the colony who reproduces. • While the queen may rule all, she isn’t born to royalty. She has fought fellow females to earn her leadership. When a queen

dies, other females will fight for the right to the queendom. •N aked mole rat colonies use very complex systems of burrows. These feature different “rooms” for different purposes, including food storage and toilet area. Because so much of their time is spent digging, naked mole rats have highly specialized teeth that can move independently of one another, like scissors, or work as a unit, like chopsticks. Their lips are capable of closing behind their incisors to keep dirt from entering their mouths. • The name “naked mole rat” is somewhat of a misnomer. While they are classified as rodents, naked mole rats are not rats; they are most closely related to porcupines, chinchillas and guinea pigs (they have no relation to moles). Nor are they entirely naked; they have sensitive whiskers on their faces and tails, as well as hair between their toes that help their feet function as brooms to sweep away soil. • Naked mole rats fascinate the scientific community in that they do not get cancer, are insensitive to pain, and have long lifespans – the longest of any rodent species. In this way, these cool creatures may aid in discoveries that could improve human healthcare. 16 | yourstoryyourstage Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed is such a cute and sweet story! If you ever read the book by Mo Willems, you will see the story follows the book very well. The story, without spoiling the show, is about Wilbur the naked mole rat. He is a normal rat until clothes fall from the sky and he sees that the clothes are nice. His friends, on the other hand, think it’s disgraceful for a naked mole rat to get dressed. They go to the leader and the leader thinks if it doesn’t hurt anyone, why would it be bad? It’s definitely a show that kids can follow along with and parents will be kept amused and delightfully entertained. Finnian Sandifer, Alliance Theatre Education Student
The songs are very catchy. After you leave the show, you will most likely be humming the melody as you walk out. The songs are all different – some are rock but others are jazzy. They make you want to jump out of your seat and start dancing. The songs also have rhythms and rhymes that make them fun to hear. Also, kids will get them stuck in their heads which is half good, half a burden. This show is a good thing for adults to watch with kids because it also has an interesting message for everybody. There was one point in the story where the mole rats told the leader they didn’t like that Wilbur wore clothes. The leader thought and thought and said, “Hey, this doesn’t bother us!” So everyone accepted him. So what does this say? Well, I feel it says we should accept each other. Think about it: as the leader said, if something doesn’t hurt us, why should it be considered disgraceful? This is very relevant today with LGBTQ+ rights, as well as race and gender equality. None of these things hurt people yet many still harass people who are different than them. Whether you agree with me or not, it’s a spectacular way to pass the time. Do you have a different message to get from this? Does it affect the world differently? Who knows but you.

MO WILLEMS (Script & Lyrics) #1 New York Times Bestseller Mo Willems began his career as a writer and animator for PBS’ Sesame Street, where he garnered 6 Emmy Awards for his writing. During his nine seasons at Sesame Street, Mo also served as a weekly commentator for BBC Radio and created two animated series, Nickelodeon’s The Off-Beats and Cartoon Network’s Sheep in the Big City. While serving as head writer for Cartoon Network’s #1 rated show, Codename: Kids Next Door, Mo began writing and drawing books for children. His debut effort, Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! became a New York Times Bestseller and was awarded a Caldecott Honor in 2004. The following year Knuffle Bunny: a Cautionary Tale was awarded a Caldecott Honor. The sequel, Knuffle Bunny Too: a Case of Mistaken Identity garnered Mo his third Caldecott Honor in 2008. In addition to picture books, Mo created the Elephant and Piggie books, a series of “Easy Readers”, which were awarded the Theodor Seuss Geisel Medal in 2008 and 2009 and a Geisel Honor in 2011. For older audiences he has published an illustrated memoir of his year-long trip around the world in 1990-91 entitled You Can Never Find a Rickshaw When it Monsoons. Mo’s drawings, wire sculptures, and ceramics (done in collaboration with his father) have exhibited in numerous galleries and museums across the nation and his graphic story about his family experiences during 9-11 for DC comics resides in the Library of Congress’ permanent collection. Mo has been heard on NPR’s All Things Considered where he occasionally serves as the broadcast’s ‘Radio Cartoonist’. fle Bunny was awarded Best Film during the New York International Children’s Film Festival in 2008 and received the Andrew Carnegie Medal in 2007. The animated Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! garnered Mo his second Carnegie Medal in 2010. Mo wrote the script and lyrics for Knuffle Bunny: A Cautionary Tale, commissioned by the Kennedy Center for its 2010 season. Mo lives in Massachusetts with his family. DEBORAH WICKS LA PUMA (Music) A composer, music director and orchestrator, Deborah Wicks La Puma is one of the most produced Theatre for Young Audiences artists working today. With bestselling children’s author Mo Willems she has created Elephant and Piggie’s: We Are In A Play; Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed: The Rock Experience; and Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus: The Musical. Her many and diverse works with playwright Karen Zacarías include Ella Enchanted (based on the book by Gail Carson Levine), Olivério: A Brazilian Twist, Frida Libre, Looking for Roberto Clemente and Einstein Is a Dummy. With playwright Adam Tobin she created She Persisted (based on the book by Chelsea Clinton), and the upcoming What Do You Do With An Idea? (based on the book by Kobi Yamada). Her adult works include the lyric opera Dakota Sky and the Mexican folk musical Perdita (based on Shakespeare’s Winter’s Tale) with Kathleen Cahill. She received her MFA from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, her bachelor’s degree from Stanford University, and studied folk music with ethnomusicologist Alfredo López Mondragón. Her honors include the Jane Chambers Playwriting Award, an NEA New American Works Grant, two Parents’ Choice Awards, and a Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Musical Adaptation. A proud Mexican-American and “Navy brat” who grew up in Brazil, Portugal and California, La Puma is a member of TYA USA/ASSITEJ, ASCAP and The Dramatists Guild. He is thrilled to be returning to the Alliance after participating in last year’s productions of Ever After and Max Makes a Million. Other Atlanta-based theatrical work includes productions with The Center for Puppetry Arts, Clayton State University, Actor’s Express, Atlanta Jewish Academy, The Lovett School, Gainesville Theatre Alliance, and Georgia Ensemble Theatre. Eric works as a composer, arranger, and clinician for the Hal Leonard Corporation. He has dozens of published piano works including the popular Jazz Piano Basics series. As a clinician he has conducted piano teacher workshops throughout the US, Australia, England, Canada, and Germany. Eric is the principle pianist for the Atlanta Gay Men’s Chorus. MIKE TUTAJ (Projection Designer) returns to the Alliance Theatre after having designed projections for Ride the Cyclone in 2019. BOOTH (Jennings Hertz Artistic Director) joined the Alliance Theatre in 2001 and has initiated the Palefsky Collision Project for teens, the Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition, the Reiser Atlanta Artists Lab and commercial partnerships on such projects as The Prom; Tuck Everlasting; Ghost Brothers of Darkland County; The Color Purple; Bring It On: The Musical; Twyla Tharp’s Come Fly Away; Sister Act: The Musical; Bring in ’da Noise, Bring in ’da Funk; and Jesus Christ Superstar GOSPEL. She has directed nationally at the Goodman Theatre, La Jolla Playhouse, New York Stage and Film, Actors Theatre of Louisville, Northlight Theatre, Victory Gardens, Court Theatre and many others. She holds degrees from Denison and Northwestern universities and was a fellow of the National Critics Institute and the Kemper Foundation. MIKE SCHLEIFER (Managing Director) joined the Alliance Theatre in 2014 as General Manager, and in 2016 became Managing Director. While at the Alliance, Schleifer has led the administrative team on more than 50 productions and was one of the architects of the “On the Road” season, in which the Alliance produced 12 shows at 12 venues. He is proud to have started the Alliance’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee and to serve on the League of Resident Theatre’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Initiative. Previously, he spent 13 years at Baltimore’s Center Stage, working as Associate Producer, Production Manager and Resident Stage Manager. While in Baltimore, he spent seven years as an adjunct faculty member at Towson University and guest lectured all over the East Coast. Schleifer began his career as a Stage Manager and has dozens of stage-management credits in New York and regionally. He is married to theater director and educator Laura Hackman and is the proud father of two boys, Jack and Ben.

JODY FELDMAN (Producer/Casting Directing) began her theater career as an actress in Atlanta before moving into administration as the Assistant General Manager at Frank Wittow’s Academy Theatre. Feldman started her career at the Alliance as Casting Director in 1991, and added Producer to her title and responsibilities in 2001. She has cast and produced more than 200 productions at the Alliance, encompassing a range of world premieres that includes The Last Night of Ballyhoo by Alfred Uhry, What I Learned in Paris by Pearl Cleage, Broke and Troubadour by Janece Shaffer, In the Red and Brown Water by Tarell Alvin McCraney and more than 10 years of Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition-winning plays plus such world and regional premiere musicals as Tuck Everlasting; Aida; The Color Purple; Sister Act: The Musical; Bring It On: The Musical; Ghost Brothers of Darkland County; Harmony, A New Musical and The Prom. The Alliance Theatre is beyond excited to offer a record-breaking Summer Camp season with over 225 theater-focused camps to students across the Atlanta Metro area. Students ages 3 – 18 years old are invited to expand their creativity, develop new work, and create long lasting friendships. We have extended our programming beyond the walls of The Woodruff Arts Center to satellite locations at Oglethorpe University, The Galloway School, The Lovett School, First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta, Grove Park, Alpharetta Arts Center, Tapestry Public Charter School, Kennesaw State University, and The Museum School. The camp experience consists of a week-long intensive where campers explore different facets of theater performance including musical theater, improv, on-camera acting, playwriting, tech design, and songwriting. During a camp week, students work with professional teaching artists in the creation of an original performance, culminating with a shared performance with family and friends at the end of the week. Campers participate in specially developed curricula to grow as

young artists and hopefully develop a lifelong love for the theater. More importantly, we believe our programming empowers students to develop strong communication tools for collaboration that will push them to become more empathetic, caring human beings. Connecting campers to the season in this way allows our students to preview upcoming productions and even participate in the development of new work. This summer, students will learn and perform original works based on the themes discussed in our upcoming productions specifically designed for families and young audiences. 38 | encore ABOUT THE ALLIANCE THEATRE Now in its 51st season, the Alliance Theatre is the leading producing theater in the Southeast, reaching more than 165,000 patrons annually. Under the leadership of Susan V. Booth, Jennings Hertz Artistic Director, the Alliance received the Regional Theatre Tony AwardŽ for sustained excellence in programming, education, and community engagement. In January 2019, the Alliance opened its new, state-of-the-art performance space, The Coca-Cola Stage at Alliance Theatre. Known for its high artistic standards and national role in creating significant theatrical works, the Alliance has premiered more than 116 productions including nine that have transferred to Broadway. SYNOPSIS Wilbur and all his fellow naked mole rats in the Tunnel have always been...naked. Wondering what other possibilities are out there, Wilbur discovers a love for clothing and style. When word of his new passion turns the Tunnel upside down, he proves to everyone that there’s no need to be just like everyone else.

The Alliance Theatre volunteer STARS program offers a wide range of opportunities, which includes advocating for live theatre, ushering for Alliance productions, participating in and staffing fundraising & hospitality events, and assisting Alliance staff members with daily office tasks. STARS is composed of three committees working together on fund-saving and fundraising projects to benefit the theatre.
