So John Mellencamp and Stephen King walk into a haunted house …. For a few years now, there’s been a project on the horizon for this theatre that had the allure and the risk of a thrill ride. The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and the Master of the Macabre had created a work of theatre that didn’t look or sound like any work of theatre we could compare it to. No, this was a blues concert/ghost story mash-up, and the Alliance got itself invited to be the premiering home. (And the gents were good enough to throw the musical genius of T Bone Burnett into the mix just to keep things lively.) You don’t say no to an opportunity like this. But you don’t say yes unless you’ve got a staff that can deliver the goods and an audience that’s game for the ride. It is a gift beyond measure to be able to say a resounding yes — yes, we have the best artists, craftspeople, and theatre staff you’re going to find. And yes, we have an audience here in Atlanta that’s up for an adventure and comes to the theatre with high hopes and open hearts. So thank you, Mr. Mellencamp, Mr. King and Mr. Burnett for the invitation. And thank you Alliance and Atlanta for living a culture of yes.

Good and Evil in a lakeside cabin by Celise kalke

I

n much of the work of American novelist Stephen King, “place” takes on the moral stamp of original or previous owners. Many of these haunted places are isolated or small enough to be morally distinct and self-contained. Sometimes the moral vagaries and changing neighborhoods of large cities come into play, for example Dallas of the early 1960s in 11/22/63, but King again and again uses the moral depth of

small towns or isolated buildings as the setting for his work. But “setting” is, perhaps, not theatrical enough to define this technique. In reading King, whole buildings, towns or places take on a color, mood and value, which almost throbs with specificity: the pure evil living in The Shining’’s hotel, the malevolence embodied by Carrie’s small-town teenagers, or the violent car in Christine. The McCandless cabin is another throbbing location from King’s imagination. The cabin vibrates with the intense emotions of fraternal rivalry.

Stephanie Pfriender Stylander

“Well I was born in a small town And I can breathe in a small town Gonna die in this small town And that’s prob’ly where they’ll bury me.” — John Mellencamp, lyric from “Small Town”

“I don’t ask for your pity, but just for your understanding — not even — no. Just for your recognition of me in you, and the enemy, time, in us all.”

— Tennessee Williams, in Sweet Bird of Youth

Shane Leonard

Based on a true story from Indiana, told to King by composer and lyricist John Mellencamp, the cabin becomes a safe-deposit box of the richest brotherly emotions. Both great love and extreme jealousy reside there, waiting to inhabit any pair of McCandless brothers that venture inside. This theatrical vibrancy couples beautifully with John Mellencamp’s ability to evoke American small-town life. Again and again in his songs, the idea of the small community is examined without judgment. These isolated communities define character in their own way: Heroes emerge in high school, your story is shaped by age 17 and that 17-yearold’s story accompanies you through adulthood. Plus everyone in town remembers your story, your father’s story and your family’s story from the time your people rolled into town. Faulkner’s writing also did that brilliantly as he created an entire imaginary Mississippi county, settling character within place and tracing family behavior back through a deep system of interconnected community roots.

“And Cain talked with Abel his brother: And it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him. And the LORD said unto Cain, where is Abel, thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother’s keeper? And he said, what hast thou done? The voice of thy brother’s blood crieth unto me from the ground. And now art thou cursed from the Earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother’s blood from thy hand. — From the biblical story of Cain and Abel

Combining an electric and morally complicated place with a deep understanding of American small-town life has produced the magical uniqueness of Ghost Brothers of Darkland County. King and Mellencamp — two great American artists — have created a unique theatrical experience, truer to their own modes of storytelling than musical theatre conventions. The result is a riveting stage experience.

“I was made to write stories, and I love to write stories. That’s why I do it. I really can’t imagine doing anything else and I can’t imagine not doing what I do.” — Stephen King on why he writes, stephenking.com alliancetheatre.org

Ghost Brothers of Darkland County John Mellencamp on his collaboration with Stephen King and how they got their unusual musical to the stage by BRET LOVE

J

The concept, which he first spoke to novelist Stephen King about in 2000, is the story of a father who takes his two constantly bickering sons to a cabin in the woods, where deep, dark family secrets are gradually revealed. Although details of the plot have been kept secret, Mellencamp, King, Musical Director T Bone Burnett and Alliance Theatre Artistic Director Susan V. Booth did chat about the show in a December press conference. Here’s some of what this bona-fide rock ‘n’ roll legend said about the show’s journey.

ohn Mellencamp has accomplished quite a lot over the course of his 35-year career as one of the American heartland’s most beloved singer-songwriters. He has sold more than 40 million albums, had 22 Top 40 hit singles, has been nominated for 13 Grammy Awards, co-founded Farm Aid, and has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. But his 12-year quest to take Ghost Brothers of Darkland County from concept to reality may have been the most challenging.

You and Stephen have both written a ton of material in your respective fields. What were the challenges of trying to write something for the stage?

Steve and I made a decision early on that we weren’t going to do a musical where the songs moved the story forward. He had to be able to write something, and then I had to be able to expand the moment. In essence, it was like Pygmalion and My Fair Lady: The story was here, and the music was there, now how do we work it together? After watching it, I feel that Susan has been able to put it together like the same guy wrote the songs and the words.

Yeah, we worked with some great people — Kris Kristofferson, Rosanne Cash, Elvis Costello, Sheryl Crow, Matthew McConaughey, Meg Ryan. ... It’s like an old-time radio play. T Bone Burnett produced it, and it’s going to come out as an album eventually. What can you tell us about the casting of this show?

This was our third attempt to get this show together. We had done it [a workshop] in New York, and it just didn’t work. It was too [singing] “Broadway Rhythm,” but that’s not what this show is. discover us. discover you. For more than 20 years I was part owner of the largest concert promotion company in the Southeast. I vividly recall attending John Mellencamp concerts at Chastain Park. In fact, I still have his Greatest Hits CD in my car. In addition, for as long as I can remember, I have been a huge fan of Stephen King and T Bone Burnett. So, as a member of the Alliance Theatre Board of Directors, I was proud to be asked to write a few comments for the playbill of Ghost Brothers of Darkland County as it celebrates its world premiere right here in Atlanta. The play has all the elements that I believe will make it a huge success. It is a murder mystery, ghost story, family drama, by one of the most popular authors of our time ... and it’s a musical!! The Perfect Storm. How fortunate we are to have these three brilliant artists display their work on the Alliance Theatre stage. — Steve Selig, President, Selig Enterprises & Alliance Theatre Board Member

about the alliance theatre Founded in 1968, the Alliance Theatre remains closely tied to the cultural identity of Atlanta, growing as the city has grown. The theatre has gained national recognition and prominence as we have become a leading international city. In 1977, the Alliance merged with the Atlanta Children’s Theatre (founded in 1929) in order to include Atlanta’s youngest audiences in fully produced theatrical experiences. In 1979, the Alliance created the Theatre School (now the Acting Program and Education Department) in order to strengthen the relationship with our community. In 2007, under the leadership of Susan Booth, Jennings Hertz Artistic Director, the Alliance received the Regional Theatre Tony Award®, in recognition of sustained excellence in programming, education and community engagement. Realizing that our audience and the national field supports plays developed in Atlanta, the Alliance has created a large body of new work. The Alliance produces world premiere American musicals with a strong track record of Broadway, touring and subsequent regional productions. The theatre creates and nurtures the plays and careers of earlycareer playwrights through the Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwright Competition, providing a premiere for the winner as part of our regular season and national networking opportunities for four finalists. Locally based artists create work on a nationally watched stage, launching and sustaining Atlanta’s artistic community. Finally we create and produce original plays for young audiences at every age level: from the Collision Project, which creates opportunities for high school artists to collide with classic texts, to the ground-breaking Theatre for the Very Young, creating interactive work for infants and toddlers. The Alliance takes great pride in our multi-generational educational programming. Believing that the same excellence found on our stage must be found in our education programs, the Alliance created the Institute for Educators and Teaching Artists. A collaborative partnership between the Alliance and partner schools, the institute programs equip teachers with theatrical techniques that link directly to school curriculum, align with the Georgia Performance Standards and increase student learning. These innovative programs include GA Wolf Trap, a nationally recognized professional learning program that focuses on literacy skills for children in pre-K – 2nd grade, Dramaturgy K-12, a unique program that empowers student scholars to create research material that both informs Alliance productions and prepares their peer audiences; and Collision Plus, which takes the creativity and collaboration of the Collision Project into our high school classrooms. The Alliance also offers community education, including classes for all ages and abilities of theatre interest; and adult student productions of unproduced plays in development (working with local writers and playwrights from the National Graduate Playwriting Competition). Twice recognized by the Federal Department of Education as leaders in the field of arts education, these programs reflect the Alliance’s commitment to city-wide arts access. The Alliance Theatre strives to set the highest artistic standards and create the powerful experience of shared theatre for a diverse audience. Above all else, we value excellence, pursued with integrity and creativity, and achieved through collaboration. 404.733.4650 or alliancetheatre.org http://facebook.com/AllianceTheatre
