Once upon a time, the sound of Howlin’ Wolf singing "Smokestack Lightnin’" rocked my world. I was at a loud and crowded, raging adolescent party in someone’s basement. That someone had a mind-bending record collection, and that was why you went to his parties. And this song came on. And the room went quiet. It was like this man had no body — just voice. Just pure emotion poured into pure voice. And you felt that voice in your bones and you knew you weren’t going to be exactly the same afterward. Your molecules were getting a little bit scrambled, and you liked it. At least I did. The next time my world got rocked liked that happened in a tiny 135-seat theatre in Chicago, in the Studio of the Goodman Theatre. And that was a production of Oyamo’s play Let Me Live, staged by Ron OJ Parson, with musical direction by Mississippi Charles Bevel. In a tiny room, those two gentlemen made lightning in a bottle and created an evening of theatre that was visceral like nothing I’d ever seen before. So here we are with I Just Stopped By to See the Man. A visceral and pure emotional trip inside the blues. A story of secrets and sacrifices and the cost of them both. And Ron and Mississippi are driving the train. This is gonna be good.

Journeying across cultural experiences usic. Secrets. Unexplored paths. These three elements make up the heart of Stephen Jeffreys’ play. The blues, however, makes the play’s heart beat. I Just Stopped By to See the Man is about a man (or The Man, as he’s called by fans) who sacrificed his status as a legend and put down his guitar once and for all. Jesse “The Man” Davidson inspired the success of English rock star Karl, whose cover of his classic blues song went platinum much like real-life blues musician Muddy Waters, who heavily influenced the Rolling Stones. When Karl stumbles across The Man and his daughter, all three characters are forced to come to grips with how their lives have turned out and where to go from there. Behind the musical and moving text, there is irony galore. What is often impressive about I Just Stopped By to See

the Man is the authenticity with which English writer Jeffreys writes this play set so far from his own upbringing. In the play, The Man states: “If you sing a song about Atlanta, you got to have been to Atlanta.” His daughter, Della, argues a similar point: Unless you have personally experienced being black, poor and deprived in America, then singing the blues is an inauthentic expression. With characters that could very well be talking directly to Jeffreys, the biggest question raised is, “What does an awardwinning London playwright know about the blues aesthetic? Or about writing American characters who experienced the Jim Crow South?” Probably about the same amount that a British rock star might know about blues legend The Man or the Rolling Stones knew about Muddy Waters.
Selection from Rollin’ Stone by Muddy Waters Muddy Waters

Audiences across the country agree that the play works well. Somehow these cultural clashes work as Jeffreys breaks the rule of “writing what you know.” It is possibly the intrusion of the English rock star that gives the play an authentic feel. At the same time it allows Americans to not only look at ourselves more fully but also see ourselves through the eyes of a familiar stranger. There is something about the blues and the story these characters portray that transcends cultural experiences. Human experiences such as suffering, disappointment and failure have no cultural specificity. A significant theme of the play is the question of whether you need to experience the subject matter of your art in order for it to be authentic. Jeffreys seems to nod to this assertion on the part of his characters but offers his own idea as a playwright instead. We naturally have a fascination with cultures different than our own, but we do not necessarily have to experience those cultures in order to identify with them. And what Jeffreys does have is
Well, I wish I was a catfish, swimmin in a oh, deep, blue sea I would have all you good lookin women, fishin, fishin after me Sure ‘nough, a-after me Sure ‘nough, a-after me Oh ‘nough, oh ‘nough, sure ‘nough Well, my mother told my father, just before hmmm, I was born, “I got a boy child’s comin, He’s gonna be, he’s gonna be a rollin’ stone, Sure ‘nough, he’s a rollin’ stone Sure ‘nough, he’s a rollin’ stone”
the experience of listening to the blues. As an Englishman, yes, but also as an artist. As a playwright, he knows how to listen not only to words but the stories and emotions behind the words. As their story unfolds, the characters in I Just Stopped By to See the Man nudge us toward accepting the universal message that the blues often shares with its listeners: No matter how bleak, no matter how much we may desire otherwise, our story never ends — as Alliance Artistic Director Susan Booth eloquently states — “as long as we’re drawing breath.” Jiréh Holder is the Alliance Literary Intern. alliancetheatre.org

A RIGHT TO SING THE BLUES Mississippi Charles Bevel on growing up in the Delta and his role in I Just Stopped By to See the Man by bret love ississippi Charles Bevel is as authentic a blues man as you’re likely to find in the acting community. The artist, otherwise known as ‘Sip,’ was born in the Mississippi Delta and came of age during the civil rights movement. He went on to open for everyone from Taj Mahal to B.B. King before making his way into a theatre. Now, in I Just Stopped By to See the Man, Bevel combines his passions — playing a retired blues musician sought out by a British rocker hoping to find the spotlight one last time. I grew up in the Mississippi Delta, but the only musical instrument I’d ever heard by the time I was 10 years old was a badly out-of-tune piano. That’s how far back in the boonies I lived! Around Christmas of ’48 or ’49, my father bought a radio. A few months later I heard Sonny Boy Williamson playing his harmonica and singing on the radio, and that was my introduction to the blues. What can you tell us about your character, Jesse, and how his story unfolds?
It’s very interesting in terms of how it’s written. What I connected to was that whole struggle he’d gone through in terms of being a good musician, but it never meant anything to him in terms of making money. The whole tragedy is that his woman left him because of that. So many guys, like Mississippi John Hurt and Son House, had to deal with making nickels and dimes for most of their lives. I saw that play out in so many ways, where you couldn’t get credit or you wouldn’t be allowed to do it because of how things were structured racially. I’m really looking forward to dealing with that onstage, and I think I can get that across to the audience. discover us. discover you. In I Just Stopped By to See the Man I discovered obligation. Jeffrey’s characters act not out of rational self-interest, but an obligation to something greater than themselves, be it civil rights, love lost, or reverence for the raw energy of a foreign art. I was privileged enough to work alongside this talented cast and director, Ron OJ Parsons. Initially, however, I was not sure of how much I could offer as the seventies was way before my time, and my knowledge of the delta region was just as sparse. I attacked the script head on drawing as many parallels as possible between the characters and events mentioned. This obligation to understanding the setting of the piece has made me more knowledgeable of that time as well as more effective in my position. — Elliot Dixon, Assistant to the Director & Alliance Theatre Kenny Leon Fellow Founded in 1968, the Alliance Theatre remains closely tied to the cultural identity of Atlanta, growing as the city has grown. In 1977, the Alliance merged with the Atlanta Children’s Theatre (1929) to include Atlanta’s youngest audiences in fully produced theatrical experiences. In 1979, the Alliance created the Theatre School (now the Acting Program and Education Department) in order to strengthen the relationship with our community. In 2007, under the leadership of Susan Booth, Artistic Director, the Alliance received the Regional Theatre Tony Award®. The Alliance has created a large body of new work: world premiere musicals with a strong track record of Broadway, touring and subsequent regional productions; the plays of early career playwrights through the Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwright Competition; work on a nationally watched stage, launching and sustaining Atlanta’s artistic community; and original plays for young audiences at every age level. The Alliance takes great pride in our educational programming through the Institute for Educators and Teaching Artists, community education including classes for all ages and abilities of theatre interest; and adult student productions of unproduced plays in development. Twice recognized by the Federal Department of Education as leaders in the field of arts education, these programs reflect the Alliance’s commitment to arts access. The Alliance Theatre strives to set the highest artistic standards and create the powerful experience of shared theatre for a diverse audience. Above all else, we value excellence, pursued with integrity and creativity, and achieved through collaboration. 404.733.4650 or alliancetheatre.org http://facebook.com/AllianceTheatre

“I was exercising and when my heart rate rose, my jaw went numb and I had some shortness of breath. I called my doctor and saw him the next day. After just a few minutes, he sent me to WellStar Cardiovascular Medicine. It was a huge shock to find that I needed a quintuple bypass. But Dr. Cooper and the whole cardiology team really listened and took care of me. “This was a life-changing experience. I now serve on the WellStar Foundation Board of Directors. It’s important to me to give back and help raise money and awareness for the people that gave me my health, and my peace of mind.”
If you have heart, you can do just about anything. Living well takes planning. It takes perseverance. And most of all, it takes heart. That’s why, every day, across five counties and five hospitals, WellStar is helping people like Tony with a world-class cardiac network. From prevention to catheterization and open-heart surgery to rehabilitation, we put our whole hearts into taking care of yours.
