he creative team involved with Bring It On: The Musical includes some of Broadway’s most talented and promising young artists. Director/ choreographer Andy Blankenbuehler won a Tony Award for his choreography in In the Heights and is making his directorial debut with this dance-driven piece. The book is by Jeff Whitty, who won a Tony Award for Avenue Q. The music was originally conceived for two writing teams tackling two very different high schools: music and lyrics by Tony Award winner Lin-Manual Miranda (In the Heights) and the second team made up of music by Pulitzer and Tony Award winner Tom Kitt (Next to Normal) and lyrics by Amanda Green (High Fidelity) the daughter of legendary Broadway lyricist Adolph Green (On The Town, Singin’ in the Rain). As work on the show progressed, however, these divisions became loose and the team worked together as one collective creative unit. Bridging the disparate musical styles is music supervisor/arranger/orchestrator Alex Lacamoire, who won a Tony for his work on In the Heights and a Grammy for his work on the cast album. A gathering of such high-powered, creative luminaries has the potential to be volatile, but Blankenbuehler, who brought the team together, says there are no egos when they work.

“Everyone in the room has won a Tony Award; there’s nothing to prove,” he says. “We all really met eye to eye on the piece, and creating it became a party. When we get together, the room is really electric. It feels like we should be together.” Part of that chemistry may be due to the fact that everyone involved is still “hungry.” Individually, they have been lauded for contributing something new and exciting to the American musical, but each needs to create a legacy. “We all love the American musical and what musicals do, and have no desire to change that,” Blankenbuehler says. “We just want to create a traditional musical in our own voice.” alliancetheatre.org

to be a sassy cheerleader that didn’t get it, an interracial competition, a diverse musical presence and be set in high-school cheerleading. So, there’s a continuation of the themes even though the story is brand new.” The Alliance Theatre was on a short list of potential theatres to debut the new musical from the start. “The Alliance has gotten a great reputation for developing new musicals,” Blankenbuehler says. “Atlanta is a great melting pot of a city for us to try this show out in.” Even though Bring It On: The A sassy cheerleader transfers to a school where Musical is his directorial debut, there isn’t even a cheerleading squad. profiles ANTWAN BETHEA (Ensemble) graduated from East Carolina University in Greenville, N.C., with a B.A. in Elementary Education. He cheered on ECU’s varsity co-ed squad for four years, becoming senior captain his final year. Antwan also has been an instructor for Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) for seven years. He’s been awarded North Carolina’s Veteran of the Year Plaque for the past four years. In addition to collegiate cheerleading, Antwan cheered professionally for Carolina’s NBA team, the Charlotte Bobcats. Much love and thanks to everyone who believed in me! NICK Blaemire (Randall/God-like Voice) Theatre credits include Altar Boyz, The Last Goodbye (Williamstown Theatre Festival), Lil’s 90th (Long Wharf Theatre), James Lapine’s Mrs. Miller Does her Thing (Vineyard Playhouse), Little Shop of Horrors (Casa Manana) and The Black Suits (SPF at The Public Theater). He appeared in the Broadway tour of Cry-Baby. Film and TV credits include: The Assassination of a High School President and “Guiding Light.” Not only is Nick a talented actor, but he also is a gifted music composer. He wrote the music and lyrics for the onenight Broadway sensation Glory Days and is currently working on a new original musical as a commission for Broadway Across America. COURTNEY CORBEILLE (Ensemble) is making her Alliance debut! Courtney has been dancing and cheering since she could walk. She trained at Gayle Corkery School of Ballet in Ft. Worth, Texas, for 12 years and attended intensives with Vail International Ballet, Atlanta Ballet and The Radio City Rockettes. Courtney cheered competitively under the leadership of Brett Hansen and Brad Vaughan at Spirit of Texas, capturing seven National Cheerleading Association national championships in seven years. She competed in the first-ever Cheerleading World Championship, and her team won the gold medal in 2005. Most recently, Courtney cheered on the large coed game day squad and the nationals competition squad at the University of Oklahoma and graduated with honors with a journalism degree in 2010. She thanks God for this opportunity of a lifetime and is grateful for the unconditional

A Wichita, Kan., native, Shawn received her B.A. in life science/pre-med with a minor in dance at Kansas State University. During her college career, she served as captain for both the all-girl and co-ed cheerleading squads and participated in several UCA and NCA national competitions. After graduation, she moved to New York City to continue her dance training at The Ailey School. Being out of the game and needing something to fulfill her need to compete, she discovered competitive cheerleading. From there, she fell in love and dedicated most of her time to Kentucky Elite All-Stars out of Lexington, Ky. She cheered on the Large Coed team in which she won numerous national titles. Brooklyn was also featured in many magazines, was chosen as an All-American Cheerleader, modeled for Nfinity shoe ads and published an article in Cheerleading: “From Tryouts to Championships.” She went on to cheer for the University of Louisville and now spends her time traveling around the country and internationally doing skills camps and choreography. Michael Naone-Carter (Ensemble) Hawaiian triple threat; Michael Naone-Carter was born the oldest of five on Jan. 17, 1990 in Honolulu, Hawaii. Naone-Carter isn’t your average talent deriving from humble beginnings. Although his beginning was humble indeed, this talented prodigy only did what he enjoyed and absolutely had fun. Dancing since the age of five with family is the unlikely foundation of Naone-Carter’s successful journey in the world of entertainment. He is a self-taught gymnast, tumbling and stunts instructor and National Championship recipient with Hofstra University Cheerleading Team. Naone-Carter discovered a strong love for the performing arts when he reached high school. Winning roles for several productions like The Music Man, Annie, Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables and South Pacific just fed his hunger and enlarged his appetite for success. Naone-Carter has been performing Polynesian dance across the East Coast, Las Vegas and Hawaii since 2006, and he continues to wow the audiences with his amazing singing and dancing abilities. David Ranck (Enemble) is a member of Actor’s Equity as well as an ensemble member in Bring It On: The Musical here at the Alliance Theatre. Originally from Strasburg Penn., graduating from Lampeter-Strasburg High School in 2002. After high school, he started his college career at Colorado State University where he became a SAG member and traveled between there and

California doing small screen work off and on. During his time there, he was a professional cheerleader for the Denver Nuggets basketball team. He then transferred to Morehead State University in Kentucky and finished his University Studies degree, while being a cheerleader for the school and an instructor for the Universal Cheerleaders Association. On stage experience includes Cheer: The Musical that opened in Denton, Texas, as well as numerous theatrical performances throughout his college career. RyanN Redmond (Bridget) is so excited to be making her Alliance debut! She is currently studying at NYU’s Tish School of the Arts (CAP21). Hip-hopping into the mainstream The evolution of the modern-day musical, from Bring In ‘da Noise to Bring It On by celise kalke

he first hip-hop-inspired musical to succeed onstage was George C. Wolfe and Savion Glover’s amazing Bring In ‘da Noise Bring In ‘da Funk (1995). It popped because hoofin’ – incredible street tap – was woven into a show celebrating African-American history and dance. It wasn’t the live rapper onstage that made it hip-hop as much as its multi-genre blend of technique, discipline, history and street smarts did. In the Heights, the next hip-hopinspired musical of note, opened on Broadway in 2008. Its story of immigrant aspirations could have been about the Italian or Jewish communities of the 1880s had it not been for its vocabulary of Latin/hip-hop-inspired choreography and ironic take on the American dream (the main character’s name, Usnavi, comes from a U.S. Navy boat his parents saw during their exodus from the Dominican Republic). Those touches made the musical a uniquely 21st century experience. Bring It On: The Musical continues in this tradition by infusing the traditional musical form with contemporary elements from the world of competitive

cheerleading. In the last decade, the world of cheerleading has gained an athletic credibility and respect it’s never had before. The idea of cheerleader as super athlete is finally edging out the old stereotype of the bouncy girl with pompoms who dates the quarterback. The fact that Bring It On: The Musical makes teenage girls its focus also adds a new wrinkle to the hip-hop musical genre. Usually, it’s the men who rap and strut their stuff while the women sing ballads. Bring It On: The Musical gives its heroines the same heavily athletic, show-stopping dance moves their hip-hop brothers enjoyed in shows like In the Heights. Based on a popular mainstream movie franchise, the musical depicts a mainstream broad enough to include a drag queen in its Queen Bee’s Court. It puts cheerleading on equal athletic footing with football and makes women central to its story. It isn’t a nostalgic musical or a musical playing with form for form’s sake, yet it strives for the highest bars of athletic, musical and stage craft perfection. It is a product that is as much of today’s world as you are likely to find walking the halls of Atlanta’s high schools.
