THE RX. THERE’S ONLY ONE ORIGINAL. The Lexus RX is more than just the original luxury crossover. Since the day it launched, it’s been giving its competition something to pursue. Like creating the first-ever luxury hybrid. Offering an available Pre-Collision System with radar technology. And featuring a class-leading 10 airbags. With all that, it’s no surprise that the RX also comes with the best driver loyalty in its class.* The Lexus RX. When innovation happens, it happens here first.

he creative team involved with Bring It On: The Musical includes some of Broadway’s most talented and promising young artists. Director/ choreographer Andy Blankenbuehler won a Tony Award for his choreography in In the Heights and is making his directorial debut with this dance-driven piece. The book is by Jeff Whitty, who won a Tony Award for Avenue Q. The music was originally conceived for two writing teams tackling two very different high schools: music and lyrics by Tony Award winner Lin-Manual Miranda (In the Heights) and the second team made up of music by Pulitzer and Tony Award winner Tom Kitt (Next to Normal) and lyrics by Amanda Green (High Fidelity) the daughter of legendary Broadway lyricist Adolph Green (On The Town, Singin’ in the Rain). As work on the show progressed, however, these divisions became loose and the team worked together as one collective creative unit. Bridging the disparate musical styles is music supervisor/arranger/orchestrator Alex Lacamoire, who won a Tony for his work on In the Heights and a Grammy for his work on the cast album. A gathering of such high-powered, creative luminaries has the potential to be volatile, but Blankenbuehler, who brought the team together, says there are no egos when they work.
“Everyone in the room has won a Tony Award; there’s nothing to prove,” he says. “We all really met eye to eye on the piece, and creating it became a party. When we get together, the room is really electric. It feels like we should be together.” Part of that chemistry may be due to the fact that everyone involved is still “hungry.” Individually, they have been lauded for contributing something new and exciting to the American musical, but each needs to create a legacy. “We all love the American musical and what musicals do, and have no desire to change that,” Blankenbuehler says. “We just want to create a traditional musical in our own voice.” alliancetheatre.org

So, there’s a continuation of the themes even though the story is brand new.” The Alliance Theatre was on a short list of potential theatres to debut the new musical from the start. “The Alliance has gotten a great reputation for developing new musicals,” Blankenbuehler says. “Atlanta is a great melting pot of a city for us to try this show out in.” Even though Bring It On: The A sassy cheerleader transfers to a school where Musical is his directorial debut, there isn’t even a cheerleading squad. As she Blankenbuehler laughs at the works to create a competitive team, she learns that life isn’t all about working and winning, notion that he is somehow an it’s about valuing relationships, following your overnight success. “I’ve been in passion and giving it all you’ve got. I was would go away and work. “The team is fortunate that I was a great dancer very fast,” he adds. “If we got together who also could sing … but I’m also for a month straight, we could go from a business person and knew that I wouldn’t have longevity in performing. nothing to Broadway in a month.” Blankenbuehler’s team didn’t want So seven years ago, I committed time to to adapt any of the existing Universal just do choreography.” He worked on Studios movies for the stage. “When many projects, some of them for free, Universal approached me two and a before In the Heights exploded. For Bring It On: The Musical, half, three years ago, they gave me carte blanche to do whatever we wanted Blankenbuehler auditioned about to do,” he explains. “The movies set 1,600 people to fill 25 parts. So, the up a whole formulaic world, and we best advice he has for aspiring musical thought that world was so strong, we performers is for them to diversify their wanted to take our own stab at it. I skills and perfect their technique. “You brought Jeff, Tom, Lin and Amanda have to do it all,” he says. “The people together, and we started brainstorming who get the job could get the work as a ideas from scratch. We knew there had singer or a dancer or an actor.” There aren’t a lot of modern musicals that are written with the writers, composers and lyricists living or working in the same state. But, Blankenbuehler says, the Bring It On: The Musical team made it a point to all be in the same room for at least a solid week every six months or so. “We [would] sit around and verbalize ideas, and spend a lot of time with Jeff, the writer,” he says, discussing things such as when it feels right in the script for someone to sing, and to whom they

Why this play? When the most decorated musical theatre talents of the last five years get together on a project and then come knocking, the Alliance opens the door. The world of competitive cheerleading feeds into the Alliance’s commitment to programming that the entire family can enjoy together. The show is truly 21st century: hip, contemporary and urban, grounded in values of hard work and a commitment to shared experiences for diverse people. Like the Alliance. Like Atlanta.
Why Atlanta? Atlanta has been essential to the growth and development of the world premiere blockbuster musicals Come Fly Away, Sister Act: The Musical, The Color Purple and Aida. Creative and producing teams know our audience is savvy and out for a good time. That enthusiasm ensures a musical still in development can reach its full potential. In turn, the Alliance deepens its commitment to bring the best talent (be they dancers, actors, singers or, in this case, cheerleaders) to our audiences.
Why now? While teenagers without hope or direction appear daily in the news, the high school students in Bring It On: The Musical possess both — and an incredible sense of accomplishment and purpose (perhaps, sometimes, to a fault). The show celebrates this vital energy with an intense athleticism that makes us all sit up and watch — especially when those skills are integrated with cutting edge, hip-hop- inspired choreography and precision staging. Bring It On: The Musical is of today — the music, dance and work ethic of today’s competitive youth. It is of the moment in terms of its aesthetic, while still timeless in terms of its rich themes and commitment to excellence in the American Musical Theatre.

About the Alliance Theatre A Brief History Atlanta’s nationally acclaimed Alliance Theatre, recipient of the 2007 Regional Theatre Tony Award®, creates the powerful experience of shared theatre for diverse people of all ages. Under the leadership of Jennings Hertz, Jr. Artistic Director Susan V. Booth, the Alliance Theatre uses contemporary classics, field leading theatre artists and a commitment to premiere as the foundation for a national theatre with a local address. The theatre’s two stages host 200,000 adult and youth patrons each season, and the Alliance engages and educates students and teachers of all ages through its extensive training programs and commitment to providing a community forum for connection and dialogue. The Alliance leads the national regional theatre field in the creation of significant American musicals and plays. This includes over 70 premieres that have enjoyed future lives in theatres across the country as well as Tony Award®-winning moves to Broadway: Alice Walker’s The Color Purple, Elton John and Tim Rice’s Aida and Alfred Uhry’s The Last Night of Ballyhoo. Following their Atlanta premieres, the Alliance transferred Twyla Tharp’s Come Fly Away to Broadway for a critically acclaimed Tony Award®-nominated run while Sister Act: the Musical will arrive on Broadway this season after its run on London’s West End. The Alliance also originated the national tours of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee and Bring in ‘da Noise, Bring in ‘da Funk. The Alliance enjoys a national reputation for finding and developing Atlanta artists for the national stage, including New York Times bestseller Pearl Cleage whose The Nacirema Society Requests the Honor of Your Presence at a Celebration of Their First One Hundred Years was the latest of Cleage’s Alliance world premieres. Further evidence of the Alliance’s commitment to new work is its nationally recognized National Graduate Playwriting Competition, a cutting-edge program introducing student playwrights to professional networks across the country while producing the world premiere of the winning student’s work here at the Alliance. Work by past Competition winners has gone on to be produced by theatres in New York, Chicago, London, San Francisco and beyond. The Alliance continuously brings Atlanta the finest talent and finest art—proving once again that the Alliance is where great theatre lives. The Alliance Theatre is a division of the Woodruff Arts Center in Atlanta, Georgia, which also houses the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, High Museum of Art and Young Audiences.
Our Mission As a leading national theatre, the Alliance Theatre sets the highest artistic standards, creating the powerful experience of shared theatre for diverse people. Hip-hopping into the mainstream The evolution of the modern-day musical, from Bring In ‘da Noise to Bring It On by celise kalke
T
he first hip-hop-inspired musical to succeed onstage was George C. Wolfe and Savion Glover’s amazing Bring In ‘da Noise Bring In ‘da Funk (1995). It popped because hoofin’ – incredible street tap – was woven into a show celebrating African-American history and dance. It wasn’t the live rapper onstage that made it hip-hop as much as its multi-genre blend of technique, discipline, history and street smarts did. In the Heights, the next hip-hopinspired musical of note, opened on Broadway in 2008. Its story of immigrant aspirations could have been about the Italian or Jewish communities of the 1880s had it not been for its vocabulary of Latin/hip-hop-inspired choreography and ironic take on the American dream (the main character’s name, Usnavi, comes from a U.S. Navy boat his parents saw during their exodus from the Dominican Republic). Those touches made the musical a uniquely 21st century experience. Bring It On: The Musical continues in this tradition by infusing the traditional musical form with contemporary elements from the world of competitive

cheerleading. In the last decade, the world of cheerleading has gained an athletic credibility and respect it’s never had before. The idea of cheerleader as super athlete is finally edging out the old stereotype of the bouncy girl with pompoms who dates the quarterback. The fact that Bring It On: The Musical makes teenage girls its focus also adds a new wrinkle to the hip-hop musical genre. Usually, it’s the men who rap and strut their stuff while the women sing ballads. Bring It On: The Musical gives its heroines the same heavily athletic, show-stopping dance moves their hip-hop brothers enjoyed in shows like In the Heights. Based on a popular mainstream movie franchise, the musical depicts a mainstream broad enough to include a drag queen in its Queen Bee’s Court. It puts cheerleading on equal athletic footing with football and makes women central to its story. It isn’t a nostalgic musical or a musical playing with form for form’s sake, yet it strives for the highest bars of athletic, musical and stage craft perfection. It is a product that is as much of today’s world as you are likely to find walking the halls of Atlanta’s high schools.

More inpatient surgeries than anyone else. Even major surgery doesn’t seem so major – not when you have world-class surgeons and the most advanced technology available. Not only do WellStar surgeons perform more than 40,000 procedures every year – more than any other health system in metro Atlanta – but they also train other doctors. They’ve shared their expertise on minimally invasive procedures with leading U.S. medical centers and on spinal surgery with doctors from around the world. Put the most advanced medical technology in their hands – including the da Vinci robotic surgical system – and you have world-class surgical care. Why would you have surgery anywhere else?
We believe in life well-lived.
