Sammy& Me
One actor, 35 roles and many expectations exploded by celise kalke
I
n Sammy and Me, Eric Jordan Young plays 35 different parts, including a version of himself. All these people are chasing the idea of Sammy Davis, Jr. They ask questions about African-American performers of the past and the effect of their legacy on African-American performers today. And they explore Sammy Davis, Jr.’s complicated cultural legacy. As the Alliance’s dramaturg, I had the pleasure of interviewing the show’s creators, director/writer Wendy Dann and actor/writer Eric Jordan Young. Here is an excerpt of that conversation. For the full Q&A, go to EncoreAtlanta.com.
This piece involves one actor playing 35 characters. How did you decide who got to be in the show? Eric: It was very scary, actually. It’s a total marathon, and the 35 characters are so vivid and particular that I thought people would think I was being too ambitious. All in all, I wanted this to be a one-man musical because it’s Sammy Davis, Jr. [But] you can’t just get onstage and say “I’m gonna be Sammy!” You have to bring something along with it. I bring along my ability to showcase all of my talents, just as Sammy did. He was an entertainer who loved to do everything at the same time: sing, dance, act! Telling my story and celebrating his through a single energy illuminates the fact that he was the quintessential entertainer. He did it all. Alone. He never hid behind someone

else’s abilities. I thought it only fair and responsible to do the same. I’ve heard you both talk about rolling up the rug in Eric’s New York apartment during the development of the show. Why was it so important to work on the bare floor? Wendy: That makes me giggle. The first day we worked on this project, we literally did push back the sofa, the chair and roll up Eric’s (I think it was a really thick shaggy) carpet. I think it was important to us to be on a bare floor because we both started as dancers. So we started with circumstances (who, what, where, when) and improvised. For instance, the “Hey There” scene was one of the first scenes we “wrote’” by setting up: “It’s nighttime. You’re watching Flip Wilson. Your mom wants you to go to bed. OK … go!”
Eric: In my everyday life, I tell stories through movement and characters, so it only made sense to embrace my storytelling style [in] the play. We went into the room knowing this, and instead of discouraging it by trying to act like writers, we found our own way: the bare floor. How is writing different than directing/ acting? Would you write another piece? Wendy: It’s so great. All those moments when you wish you could re-write the play, you can! We have a joke; whenever we hit a moment that’s awkward, we turn around and say: “Who wrote this? Get the playwright in the room!” When we collaborate on Sammy, Eric and I will often meet in person or on Skype (ah, technological advances) and talk about a certain problem in the play. We’ll just talk about it for a while, and I’ll take notes. Eric
does a lot of freewriting, and I often look through those notes and writings for juicy dramatic events to try out. What is the hardest thing about having all those characters in the play but only one actor? Wendy: Well, whenever you rehearse a one-person show there’s a moment the actor turns around in rehearsal and says, “... and then she’ll enter from over there. … Oh, wait, that’s me!” You have to pay pretty close attention. You have to learn what each character looks and sounds like. So, we work a lot in rehearsal on making those characters instantly recognizable, yet fully human and intentional. Eric: I have no one to hang out with backstage. I get to the theatre some nights and I’m waiting for the cast to arrive until I realize it’s just me. Crazy! EnJoY! alliancetheatre.org

profiles Why this play? After his star turn in 2009’s Jesus Christ Superstar GOSPEL as Herod (who could forget that purple suit?), the Alliance welcomed the chance to have Eric Jordan Young back in Atlanta using his incredible skills as a song and dance man to explore an icon of African-American entertainment, Sammy Davis, Jr.
Why Atlanta? Audiences in Atlanta are very sophisticated when it comes to appreciating great music and great entertainers. The issues raised in Sammy and Me about African-American media personalities will resonate deeply. Atlantans know talent when they see it – and Eric Jordan Young is a considerable talent. So the Alliance wanted to bring Eric back to a city that would appreciate his accomplishment with this amazing tour-de-force one-man show.
Why now? The Alliance wanted to kick start our Hertz season with glamour, Las Vegas style. Producing this play demonstrates our commitment to the most exciting new American work and also the Alliance’s exploration (from 5 Guys Named Moe and Jelly’s Last Jam through Sophisticated Ladies) of the foremost African-American musical entertainers. The Alliance also wanted to lend new play development skills and experiences to allowing Eric and Wendy to polish and refine this important and timely examination of Sammy Davis, Jr.’s artistic contribution to American culture.
About the Alliance Theatre Now in its 42nd season, Atlanta’s nationally acclaimed Alliance Theatre, recipient of the 2007 Regional Theatre Tony Award® and a leading national theatre, creates the powerful experience of shared theatre for diverse people on two stages for youth and adult audiences. Under the leadership of the Jennings Hertz, Jr. Artistic Director Susan V. Booth, the Alliance Theatre is a national theatre with a local address, reaching out annually to almost 200,000 patrons and members of the community. Known for its high artistic standards and national role in creating significant theatrical works, the Alliance launched three Tony Award-winning hits to Broadway: Alice Walker’s The Color Purple, Elton John and Tim Rice’s Aida and Alfred Uhry’s The Last Night of Ballyhoo. And, in a rare event for a regional theatre, it originated the national tour of the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Most recently, the Alliance transferred Twyla Tharp’s Come Fly Away to Broadway for a critically acclaimed Tony Award-nominated run. The theatre has premiered 60 works including adaptations of Carson McCullers’ The Heart is a Lonely Hunter and Pearl Cleage’s Blues for an Alabama Sky. Further evidence of the Alliance’s commitment to new work is founding its nationally recognized Kendeda Graduate Playwriting Competition, a cutting-edge program introducing student playwrights to professional networks while producing the world premiere of the winning student’s work. The Alliance Theatre also offers extensive education and outreach programs such as the Institute for Educators and the Collision Project for high school students. The Alliance continuously brings Atlanta the finest talent and finest art—proving once again that the Alliance is where great theatre lives. 404.733.4650 or www.alliancetheatre.org The Alliance Theatre is a division of the Woodruff Arts Center in Atlanta, Georgia, which also includes the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, High Museum of Art and Young Audiences. http://facebook.com/AllianceTheatre
