I admit it, I love the movies. For someone who does what I do, it’s probably cooler to take a kind of “theatre is the ONLY medium” position, but the truth is, I am very happy in front of a big screen. For someone raising a kid, I’m also hyper aware of the role that film plays in cultivating our senses of self, of beauty, of cultural roles and a whole lot else. In other words, I get the power that film wields in our society and on us personally. Lynn Nottage gets that, too. (She actually gets ALL kinds of things, and deeply, and that’s evidenced by a writing career that features accolades of the Pulitzer Prize variety.) She is a writer who uses the personal to get to the political and whose work moves your heart, your head and your spirit in equal measure. I have always loved how easily she can make an audience laugh — but I love even more the way she can make an audience catch their breath. She last did that for us in Atlanta with her exquisite play Intimate Apparel. And she’s back to do it with one of the smartest dissections of who stars in our movies, and why, that you could imagine. So yes, I love the movies. But I really love a great play that can tell me why, how and at what cost. Now that’s cool.

Nottage’s
SATIRICAL EDGE By Celise Kalke Pulitzer prize winner Lynn Nottage’s playwriting moves with swift intelligence and keen social perception between two literary styles: high melodrama and complex satire. Her melodramas have tremendous emotional appeal. The seamstress in Intimate Apparel — soon to be a film — is an African-American woman in early

20th-century New York, but she is also the repository of many families’ memories of the immigrant striver in a “new America,” traveling north or across the ocean. Ruined, which won the Pulitzer in 2012, is set in Africa and is inspired by Brecht. It is a melodrama of courage and strength set against the harsh conditions of a civil war in which both sides use women’s bodies as the field of battle. Nottage’s melodramas, when savvily produced, lift beyond the traditional
reaction to melodrama, (“Oh, no!”) into a more interesting and active investigation of choice and opportunity.
put her in a league with Chris Durang or Dave Chappelle. These plays are sassy and their satirical object large.
Nottage gives her young actresses the wisdom to see that the maids and chauffeurs they play in the 1930s will lead to Oscars for Halle Berry, Denzel Washington and Sydney Poitier.
Nottage’s mature satires, Fabulation and By the Way, Meet Vera Stark, are no less sophisticated and entertaining than her melodramas, but are less widely produced. Nottage grew up in Boerum Hill, Brooklyn, on the same block as famed novelist Jonathan Lethem, and there is a quality of Brooklyn edge and smarts in her satires that
By the Way, Meet Vera Stark’s subject is complicated. It begins in the style of the 1930s, in a screwball comedy of race and ambition. It is the latter end of the early days of Hollywood, and stardom for African-American actors is right there, almost. If they will earn it playing maids, chauffeurs and other service professions, they might achieve the radical position of

African-American stardom through performing “safe” representations of African-Americans. Nottage gives her young actresses the wisdom to see that the maids and chauffeurs they play in the 1930s will lead to Oscars for Halle Berry, Denzel Washington and Sydney Poitier. They play a long game: a strategy that might get overlooked in the hands of a less intellectually nimble writer. Nottage then moves from the swift hilarity of the 1930s to the rebellious lavishness of the 1970s, when TV demanded a grandeur and decadence from its fading stars in order to remain aesthetically “trashy” (something we forget when contemporary TV aesthetics range from reality TV to the novelistic heights of contemporary cable offerings). And then to the early

2000s, when academics schooled in the identity politics of race relations perfected choice narratives of tragic intersections of class and race in order to bring out the melodrama in Hollywood pioneers. Here Nottage’s satirical edge becomes the most complicated. Her academics, in the face of mystery, cling to repeating stories of faceless talent heading to despair rather than contentment. Easy satire creates easy contrast, which is then undermined. Difficult satire provokes questions. By the Way, Meet Vera Stark contains both easy laughs and almost boundless questions, while at the same time celebrating women driven by ambition, hope and an almost maniacal dedication to art.

discover us discover us. discover you. “In By The Way, Meet Vera Stark, I discovered that Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Lynn Nottage is not only a woman who is fearless when it comes to illuminating hard truths, but that she also has a wicked sense of humor. Even as we witness Vera’s talent being viewed through a distorted racial lens that seeks to confine her to a certain kind of role, she emerges not as a victim, but as a fabulous force of nature with her wit, her glamour, and her self intact.”
– Pearl Cleage Alliance Theatre Playwright in Residence
Synopsis: By the Way, Meet Vera Stark is a 70-year journey through the life of Vera Stark, a headstrong African-American maid and budding actress, and her tangled relationship with her boss, a Hollywood star desperately grasping to hold onto her career. When circumstances collide and both women land roles in the same Southern epic, the story behind the cameras leaves Vera with a surprising and controversial legacy scholars will debate for years to come.

KENDEDA TURNS TEN Anniversary season features new plays from old friends and 2014’s winner The Hertz Stage this season is home to an epic conflagration of imagination, talent and original voices. The four-show lineup introduces Atlanta audiences to new work by some of America’s brightest young playwrights — three old friends and one new one. Together we’ll celebrate a milestone for the Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition, an idea that took root 10 years ago and has grown stronger and more vibrant than we could ever have imagined. This one-of-a-kind national competition helps student playwrights in the country’s leading graduate programs make the transition to professional theatre. It’s with pride and joy that we introduce you to our 2014 winner, Madhuri Shekar, from the University of Southern California, and welcome back Kenneth Lin (…,” said Said, 2006) and Meg Miroshnik (The Fairytale Lives of Russian Girls, 2012). Choir Boy, by Tarell Alvin McCraney (In the Red and Brown Water, 2008), a coming-of-age story set in an all-boys prep school, just closed. In the midst of its run, McCraney was honored with a MacArthur Foundation 2013 “Genius” award. Each of these is a new piece. The lineup for the rest of the season: Warrior Class. Oct. 25-Nov. 17. Lin’s critically acclaimed political thriller features an Asian-American candidate who’s being groomed for a big Republican race in New York City — unless a former girlfriend publicly besmirches his sterling reputation. Lin has become one of the most widely commissioned and produced Asian-American writers in the country.

Even for a girl. Even in the Dust Bowl of the 1930s. When a mysterious young man gets off the train in Poor Prairie, a few things are clear. He’s teaching at the high school, he knows the game, and he has the only inflated basketball in town. Another world premiere from Miroshnik. These four writers are part of a group of 50 extraordinary artists to have come through the Kendeda competition. The anniversary season also includes 12 readings and workshops by other alumni winners and finalists. GEORGIA SHAKESPEARE
OCTOBER 3-27, 2013
The Alliance, known for its artistic standards and national role in creating significant theatrical works, has premiered more than 70 original productions including Tony winners The Color Purple by Alice Walker and Alfred Uhry’s The Last Night of Ballyhoo. It has a reputation for developing important American musicals with a track record of Broadway, touring and subsequent productions, including the world premieres of Sister Act, Come Fly Away, Bring It On and the U.S. premiere of Zorro, with music by the Gipsy Kings. The Alliance nurtures the careers of playwrights through its Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition, producing a premiere for the winner and national networking opportunities for four finalists.
Active in Georgia classrooms, the Alliance has developed programs using theatre techniques to help students learn through storytelling and problem-solving. The Alliance’s Institute for Educators and Teaching Artists equips teachers with theatrical techniques that link directly to school curriculum, align with the Georgia Performance Standards and increase student learning. These programs include GA Wolf Trap, which focuses on literacy skills for children in Pre-K – 2nd grade, and Dramaturgy K-12, in which students create research material that informs Alliance productions and prepares peer audiences. Twice recognized by the U.S. Education Department as leaders in arts education, these programs reflect the Alliance’s commitment to citywide arts access.

The Acting Program and Education Department reaches nearly 50,000 students annually through performances, classes, drama camps and in-school initiatives. The Alliance creates and produces plays for young audiences at every age level: from the Collision Project, where high school artists create and perform new work based on a classic text, to Theatre for the Very Young, creating interactive shows for infants and toddlers. The Alliance offers community education classes for all ages and levels of theatre interest, and adult student productions of unproduced plays in development.
The Alliance delivers the finest talent, art and educational opportunities for Atlanta audiences — proving once again that this is where great theatre lives.

had in its movies — maids, cooks, domestic workers. The play, which has been called a “satire” and a “sharp-toothed comedy” dates back a few years to the night Nottage was watching a 1933 Barbara Stanwyck movie called Baby Face on Turner Classic Movies. That’s when African-American singer-actress Theresa Harris caught her eye. Harris played Chico, the confidante of Stanwyck’s character. Their on-screen friendship knocked convention on its backside. Their relationship was fuller and far less stereotypical than what was seen in most movies of the time, according to Nottage. “They were sitting at the same table,” Nottage recalls. “I thought, ‘Wow, I have never seen that in a movie of the 1930s.’ It led me to investigate the role of AfricanAmerican women in the ’20s and ’30s, up until today. This character became my means of investigation.”

MEET LYNN NOTTAGE

On her Twitter account, Pulitzer Prizewinning playwright Lynn Nottage describes herself as “playwright, theatremaker and activist.” On her website, the nouns are “playwright, hunter and gatherer.”
and colleagues alike as “one of our finest playwrights,” “a smart, empathetic and daring storyteller” and a writer “who tells a story an audience won’t expect.”
That gives you some idea about the woman described by critics
With By the Way, Meet Vera Stark, Nottage looks at old Hollywood and the roles African-American women

Vera Stark is a composite, a character formed from the data Nottage dug up during her sleuthing. She’s part Theresa Harris, part Nina Mae McKinney (1929’s Hallelujah) and part of many other women who played minor roles in early Hollywood. Nottage became their champion. “I want these women to be seen above all else,” the playwright says. “I want their talent to be recognized. I want their struggles to be recognized.” The Brooklyn-born Nottage, now 48, grew up going to the theatre. Although she wrote plays and staged them in her family’s living room (with her brother as her principal actor), she didn’t realize until late in
college that playwriting could be a viable career. Growing up, the only woman playwright she remembers reading was Lorraine Hansberry. That changed when she met Paula Vogel, a playwright of note, one of her first playwriting teachers, a mentor and a friend. Nottage’s work, says Vogel “explores depths of humanness, the overlapping complexities of race, gender, culture and history — and the startling simplicity of desire — with a clear tenderness, with humor, with compassion.” Both student and teacher are Pulitzer Prize winners — Nottage in 2009 for Ruined (set in the Congo during its civil war), Vogel in 1998 for How I Learned to Drive. And even though women playwrights aren’t produced at the pace men are, Nottage says she can now list more than twodozen female playwrights, both black and white, who work steadily. Nottage right now is working on the libretto for an opera version of her play Intimate Apparel (seen by Alliance audiences in 2006) and early into a play about how poverty is reshaping the American myth. She’s not far enough to say more. Vera Stark, however, never seems far from her consciousness. The Alliance is one of seven companies staging the piece this season, and the character’s life doesn’t stop at the footlights. Her invented history is detailed on two websites — findingverastark.com and meetverastark.com — used by Nottage to continue exploring the character and the mythology of the play. ALLIANCETHEATRE.ORG
