between us

One of Grimm’s Fairy Tales opens with “Once upon a time when wishes still came true ...” It made me remember a wish I had when I was a tween. I wished for a horse. I did not get my horse, and soon I learned to wish for what actually might be attainable. Playwright Scott Warren and I spent quite a significant amount of time this past year with some really remarkable people who happened to be tweenagers. With Grimm tales as inspiration, tweens shared stories about the depth of family ties, about the magical properties of iPhones, about the fact that survival of the fittest is not always about the power of brute strength and that “dorkiness” is in the eye of the beholder. We sang, danced, fought, hugged and cried. We always asked them what they wished for — what their “happier ever after” looked like — and they told us. Wishes ranged from a new haircut to world peace. Listening to their wishes, both practical and fantastic, I thought back to my tween wish and wondered if I had learned to settle for less or had just lost some faith in wishing? Good theatre for any age grants us the opportunity to walk in someone else’s shoes and hopefully discover something about ourselves while we are strolling along. Scott has written this play in direct response to these young people’s words, and we really hope we have honored the joys and challenges of their lives. They taught us a lot. This play is for Sylvie, (the predominant tween in my life), and for all the other young people who shared time and thoughts with us and for everyone else who dares to wish.

And now as a final note — I am going to wish for something really unattainable!

COMPLICATED TIMES By Neeley Gossett

The widespread remakes of stories like Snow White and Cinderella

might be attributed to our need for order and structure in an all-toochaotic world. The tales are familiar and comforting. We know what to expect, and we know that evil will be punished, good will be rewarded and order will be restored. It is no coincidence that many of the recent adaptations, like Another Cinderella Story, starring Selena Gomez, are written with a middleschool audience in mind. Perhaps, this is because middle school is one of the most chaotic times in someone’s life, so the need for familiar stories becomes even

German brothers Jacob and Whihelm Grimm published their first volume of folk stories, Children’s and Household Tales, in 1812, and in 2013, it seems that the Grimm Brothers are more popular than ever. Mirror Mirror and Snow White and The Huntsman opened in theatres in 2012. “Once Upon a Time” and “Grimm” are current television adaptations of the Tales. In addition, a new Cinderella movie starring Cate Blanchett is set to premiere in 2014. The question is — why have these stories endured?

more necessary during this time. Entering middle school is a lot like wandering into the dark forests in the Grimms’ stories. There is good and evil, jealousy, deception, danger, romance and difficult choices. Director Rosemary Newcott and playwright Scott Warren explore these similarities in their new play, The Grimm Lives of the Inbetweens. The show reimagines characters like Little Red Riding Hood, Hansel, Gretel, and the Frog Prince as sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders. Both the Grimm Brothers’ stories and the trials of middle-school students are often viewed as trite or cliché. However, both middle-school students and the classic characters face complicated personal journeys, make life-changing decisions and learn vital lessons. Maybe the Grimms’ Tales remind us that just as stories end, so will these complicated and sometimes frightening three years. Although it may not seem like it in middle school, we will all live happily ever after. Neeley Gossett holds an M.F.A. from The Playwright’s Lab at Hollins University, an M.A. in English from the University of North Carolina Wilmington, a B.A. in theatre arts from Marymount Manhattan College and was a finalist in the 2013 Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwrighting Competition. She works professionally as both a playwright and dramaturg, and teaches in the Department of Theatre and Performance Studies at Kennesaw State University. She is also a teaching artist at the Alliance Theatre.

The Alliance values excellence, pursued with integrity and creativity, and achieved through collaboration. Reaching more than 200,000 patrons annually, the Alliance delivers programming that challenges adult and youth audiences to think critically and care deeply. Under the leadership of Susan V. The Alliance offers community education classes for all ages and levels of theatre interest, and adult student productions of unproduced plays in development. Active in Georgia classrooms, the Alliance has developed programs using theatre techniques to help students learn through storytelling and problem-solving. The Alliance’s Institute for Educators and Teaching Artists equips teachers with theatrical techniques that link directly to school curriculum, align with the Georgia Performance Standards and increase student learning. These programs include GA Wolf Trap, which focuses on literacy skills for children in Pre-K – 2nd grade, and Dramaturgy K-12, in which students create research material that informs Alliance productions and prepares peer audiences.
