4 | welcometosummerhill The Summerhill neighborhood and Carter are thrilled to welcome you this holiday season! We are proud to host this year’s unique drive-in production of the Alliance Theatre’s A Christmas Carol: The Live Radio Play and are honored to play a role in one of Atlanta’s favorite traditions. Established in 1865, Summerhill is one of Atlanta’s oldest and most historic neighborhoods. Founded by freed African American slaves and Jewish immigrants, it was an early hub for commerce, worship, and education in the city. Throughout the 20th century, the neighborhood has played an important role in the civil rights movement, has produced political, business and entertainment icons like Mayor Sam Massell, Herman J. Russell and Evander Holyfield, was home to Fulton County Stadium, hosted the 1996 Olympic Games, and most recently, welcomed Braves fans to Turner Field for almost 20 years. Today, the neighborhood continues to look forward. Through partnership with engaged neighbors and local organizations, Georgia State University and Carter are working diligently to thoughtfully redevelop the area once again into a hub for commerce, education, innovation, and community. GSU has expanded their athletics program to Summerhill, with plans for additional world-class facilities and a convocation center which will break ground soon. Many small businesses have opened their doors on Georgia Avenue with more to come, and an array of new homes — from student housing to apartments and townhomes — have welcomed many new, diverse residents to the area. We believe the future is bright in Summerhill and look forward to welcoming you back soon and often! Wishing you a wonderful holiday season! R. Scott Taylor, Jr. President & CEO, Carter

For thirty years, the Alliance has taken pride in presenting our annual production of A Christmas Carol. Knowing that families and friends from all over metro Atlanta come to our theater year after year to share this moving story of love and redemption gives our work purpose — so much purpose that even a pandemic was not going to stop us this year. So we got to work. The brainstorming was endless, the zoom meetings countless, the questions confounding, and the obstacles huge, but here we are — hundreds of us gathered again, reminding us that we are, finally, better together than apart. I have personally loved this journey to the Summerhill parking lot next to the Georgia State University Stadium. While searching for the perfect spot for this production, I met so many wonderful people who, even though we did not end up in their lot, were thrilled that A Christmas Carol would still happen in spite of a weary world. Our partner and host, Carter, has been as generous as the spirit of the holiday season itself and the neighbors and proprietors of Summerhill are, as my granddaddy would say, the salt of the earth. Take this opportunity to look at the people in the cars around you. Be reminded that we are all here for the same reason — to find joy and safety for ourselves and the ones we love. Then, crank up that radio and let this amazing cast and crew transcend those ideals of shared values — joy and safety — beyond this parking lot to your own communities. Thank you so much for being here. You have made our journey complete. Happy Holidays! Jody Feldman Producer, Casting Director Alliance Theatre

6 | informationfaqs I’M GLAD YOU ASKED … How do I listen to the show? Turn on your FM radio and check the big screens for a specific station to tune into! Will there be restrooms on-site? Restrooms will be available in the back row of the parking lot. When not in your vehicle, everyone will be required to wear a mask and practice social distancing. What safety precautions are being taken due to COVID-19? Safety for our patrons, artists, and staff is our top priority. Here are a few ways we’ve redesigned the experience with safety in mind: Outdoors – Open air performances help reduce the chance of spread. Social distancing – Cars will be parked at a minimum of one car space apart and patrons will be encouraged to remain at 6+ feet apart whenever they are not in their vehicles. Reduced contact – Ticket scanning will be contactless and staff will be equipped with masks and gloves. Face coverings – All patrons and staff will be required to wear a mask when not in vehicles. Need help? If your car battery dies or you need any other assistance, please turn on your hazard lights and our staff will come over to help.

COVID-19 WARNING We have taken enhanced health and safety measures for you, our artists, and employees. You must follow all posted instructions while attending A Christmas Carol: The Live Radio Play. An inherent risk of exposure to COVID-19 exists in any public place where people are present. COVID-19 is an extremely contagious disease that can lead to severe illness and death. According to the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention, senior citizens and guests with underlying medical conditions are especially vulnerable. By attending A Christmas Carol: The Live Radio Play you voluntarily assume all risks related to exposure to COVID-19. Help keep each other healthy!

A

s the

beloved Atlanta tradition of A Christmas Carol kicks off this season, it’s a much-needed glint of normalcy. But nothing’s normal at all, is it? As the self-aware performers point out, this whole situation is just weird — fitting for a weird year. Creators in an art form centered entirely around closeness, intimacy, and personto-person connection have been tasked with generating all of that without physical closeness. Tonight is not a poor man’s version of a classic, but a new opportunity that could only come about as a result of some exceptionally weird times. A Christmas Carol adaptors Ben Coleman and Leora Morris have accepted the challenge and are connecting audiences to Ebenezer Scrooge in a more poignant way than ever before. “I feel like the whole theatre is having to pivot,” shares Coleman. “But it’s really cool. What we’ve pulled out of Dickens’ original work is that A Christmas Carol is really about someone who’s become separated from other people and gets

reconnected. So we’re trying to really center that because we’re all experiencing that right now. So it’s an exciting piece of work to be rediscovering in such a strange time.” On their journey to rediscovering A Christmas Carol for a 2020 audience, Coleman and Morris built their concept around honest connection, starting by not pretending that this is your everyday play.

Rehearsals over Zoom is the new norm, even for a show that will eventually be performed live.

Stuart Gerber, Sounds and Music.

“We decided from the outset that we wanted to not hide that we’re in a parking lot in Atlanta in 2020,” says Coleman. “It’s such a strange setup that we wanted to embrace that and tell the story from this time and place with a contemporary voice.” Did that mean throwing out Dickensian language entirely? Almost. “We went all the way to one side, getting rid of all the Dickens and writing in a very contemporary way, and then reading it back to ourselves and saying, ‘Oh, we really miss Dickens! He’s a great writer,’ and putting that back in,” Coleman shares,

adding that they were sure not to sacrifice “those delicious bits of Dickens,” in the end. “So we’ve had this great time and have, I think, a new-found appreciation for his writing, too. He is such a fantastic writer.” In crafting this contemporary Dickens hybrid, the creators prioritized connecting the audience to both each other and the performers in an intimate way: a bedtime story motif. “When you aren’t able to get close to human beings, you’re going to struggle to generate any sense of intimacy or liveness,” Coleman observes, sharing that the radio play medium creates a closeness unlike regular theatre. “It’s a lot more intimate when you hear a voice in your ear, you know? So that’s something we’re really leaning into as well.” Coleman says he considers himself really lucky to get to be so involved in this piece, limitations and all. “The particular challenges and restrictions of this are giving us license to experiment in a way that you might not have done on the typical annual A Christmas Carol. So that’s really exciting for me,” Coleman says. “We’ve been pushed to make the show as interactive as we can within the very strict limits that we have with the pandemic. So we are trying to reconnect people and give them a sense of being in an audience, with the impression of the audience being a collective. So we’re trying to use every opportunity that we have, every tool that we have to make that happen.”

Co-Adapters Director Leora Morris (top) and Sound Designer Ben Coleman.

Getting to dive into the “weird cul-de-sac of the theatre world” that is radio theatre has allowed Coleman, who is also sound designer, to transport

Jeanette Illidge (voices and music) at work in the studio.

“Without spending a lot of money like if we were making a film or even doing the traditional stage performance, we can make Scrooge fly over London. And it doesn’t cost us a penny, which has been really liberating! The fact that you can just rub a few pieces of wood together, or one creaky chair with a good microphone could sound like an entire pirate ship at sea creaking, that kind of thing is really exciting! So we definitely get the chance to send people on an imaginative journey with some very simple ingredients.” Coleman’s hope for this performance is that the audience will leave having experienced more than escapism, but instead a deeper connection.

“Everything seems so changeable and unpredictable right now, but again, I think one of the strengths of this show is we get to present something that really speaks to the moment and brings people together. I hope in a way that it’s going to be — it’s not going to be escapism, but it’s going to be healing. I think that’s something I’m really interested in with this work.” In a tumultuous year, a story about the hope of personal transformation and reconciliation has never been more apropos. “It is a redemptive tale. And there’s so much acrimony right now, that I think it’s going to be really exciting to have a story in which someone realizes their mistakes that they’ve made, owns up to them, gets forgiven, and gets to return to the fold in some way. I think that’s pretty powerful.”

Looking more like abandoned shipping containers than scenic and costume designer An-Lin Dauber’s pandemically inspired set of A Christmas Carol: The Live Radio Play, these huge boxes find a temporary home in a Summerhill parking lot, waiting to be transformed into one amazing, family holiday experience.

SILENT NIGHT Silent night, holy night! All is calm, all is bright. ’Round yon Virgin, Mother and Child, Holy Infant so tender and mild. Sleep in heavenly peace, Sleep in heavenly peace. Silent night, holy night! Shepherds quake at the sight. Glories stream from heaven afar, Heavenly hosts sing ’Alleluia! Christ the Savior is born, Christ the Savior is born. Silent night, holy night! Son of God, oh, love’s pure light. Radiant beams from Thy holy face, With the dawn of redeeming grace. Jesus, Lord at Thy birth, Jesus, Lord at Thy birth.

SYNOPSIS

While the whole world celebrates the holiday season, Ebenezer Scrooge prefers to remain secret, self-contained, and solitary as an oyster. But this Christmas, he can’t! Scrooge’s old boss, Jacob Marley, sends three ghosts to take Scrooge on a journey through his past, present, and future that transforms his sense of purpose and interconnectedness. On this once-in-a-lifetime trip, Scrooge finds there’s more to life than being safe, secure, and wealthy, rediscovering his desire to play, connect, and celebrate with everyone from his employee Bob Cratchit to the Christmas carolers outside his window.

GET SOCIAL Connect with us and other audience members on your Alliance experience. Share your comments and photos on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter with hashtags #CarolATL and #AllianceTheatre. Plus, search your social media platforms with those hashtags for fun, behind-the-scenes photos from our cast, crew and creative team. alliancetheatre.org alliancetheatre alliancetheatre alliancetheatre

Do you appreciate live theatre, enjoy meeting new people and trying new things? If so, then get involved with one of the largest volunteer forces in the arts. The Alliance Theatre volunteer STARS program offers a wide range of opportunities, which includes advocating for live theatre, ushering for Alliance productions, participating in and staffing fundraising & hospitality events, and assisting Alliance staff members with daily office tasks. STARS is composed of three committees working together on fund-saving and fundraising projects to benefit the theatre. The three committees are the Theatre Advocates, the Theatre Educators, and the Theatre Ushers. For more information on becoming a volunteer, please contact ATushers@alliancetheatre.org.
